They walked up the steps to the porch and Rosemary rang the doorbell. She told Frankie to stay outside.

The door was opened by Joseph McGowan, looking as if he had just taken a shower. In his hand was a thin cigar that Rosemary hadn’t noticed at first. She did not know this 27-year-old bachelor, but “the children said that he was a very pleasant person.”

Rosemary walked into the hallway: she wanted to be where she knew Joan had been just recently. An ominous feeling had already taken over her. The woman introduced herself and asked, “Have you seen my daughter Joan? The girl brought charity cookies here.”

“I didn’t see it at all,” he answered with an indifferent tone.

And at that moment, Rosemary felt everything inside her break.

“I was standing in the hallway and suddenly noticed a large fire engine pulling up outside his house. We called the police, and when I realized that they reacted this way, it dawned on me that from that moment my life would change irrevocably.

Rosemary was shocked by McGowan’s reaction, or rather lack of it. “I stood in this hallway with tears in my eyes, and he looked at me completely indifferently. Seeing tears on my cheeks, he climbed the stairs leading upstairs and stood there with his cigar, waiting for me to leave. On the way home, I realized that he knew what happened to Joan.

After the police interviewed Rosemary and Frank at their home, the entire neighborhood went out looking for Joan. The Boy Scouts and Joseph McGowan volunteered to participate. Hundreds of people broke into small groups and combed all the houses, household plots, garbage cans and dumps, forests and parks in Hillsdale and neighboring towns. The police brought search dogs. Several people went in the fire truck that Rosemary had seen to look for Joan at the reservoir at Woodcliff Lake.

At about 9:20 pm, a priest from the Church of John the Baptist and a police dog team with a German Shepherd appeared at Rosemary and Frank’s house. Rosemary let the service dog sniff Joan’s unwashed clothes, after which the crew went around the neighborhood. The woman could not leave the feeling that the dog understood what was happening, and deeply sympathizes with her and Joan. The police officers with the dog carefully examined the path to McGowan’s house, the area around it, the front door and the garage door, but found nothing anywhere.

News of the girl’s disappearance and search quickly spread, and newspaper and television reporters flooded the area. According to Rosemary herself, this kind of thing never happened in Hillsdale. She regularly spoke to the press in the hope that someone would turn up who noticed something. Her main media memory was the carpeting of the stairs, which the journalists’ muddy shoes turned from beige to dark grey.

That evening, a feeling of agonizing anxiety made the situation in the D’Alessandro family’s home almost unbearable. It was common for Frank to fly into a rage from frustration. The day before, a man exploded due to the lack of gift wrapping for an Easter gift. “He could be quiet and calm for a long period of time, and then instantly and completely change,” recalls Rosemary. “He made good money, but he was not sociable, and our relationship never really became intimate.”

Hillsdale Police Chief Philip Varisco was vacationing in Florida when he was informed that the girl was missing. For such a town and for such a leader, the absence of a police chief at the scene of the tragedy would have been unthinkable, and he rushed home. Varisco, who died in 2012 at the age of eighty-nine, was a true professional. To maximize personal and work efficiency for his people, he completed a refresher course at the FBI National Academy in Quantico.

The next day, Varisco visited the D’Alessandro family. He found Rosemary sitting on the porch of the house. Realizing that a successful outcome was unlikely, Varisco informed her that he took the investigation under his personal control, and firmly assured that everything necessary and possible would be done. He asked for a photo of the girl to be published in the newspapers. Rosemary pulled down a photo of Joan in her school uniform from the hallway wall, took it out of the frame, and handed it to him.

Frank told reporters that if Joan’s kidnapper returned her safe and sound, he would personally petition the authorities to drop the prosecution. In one of the television interviews, Rosemary told reporter Vic Miles about what an extraordinary and beloved child Joan was, and begged to return her home. Many years later, one of Joan’s classmates told Rosemary that she still had a vivid memory of a TV show in which her mother asked her daughter to be returned to her. Just two months earlier, a woman had suddenly thought how terrible and painful the death of one of her children would be for her.

Police have questioned several likely suspects, including a man who was seen driving around the area about an hour before Joan disappeared and another wandering aimlessly on foot. It turned out that the first one was looking for a suitable house to move in, and the second one just got lost.
