Punk.

Icon. Activist. How did the film about Vivienne Westwood turn out

On April 19, Pioneer Film Company releases Lorna Tucker’s documentary Westwood: Punk. Icon. Activist”. The designer is indignant and disowns the picture, while the critics seem to be pleased. We tell you what to expect from this story. nine0003

It’s amazing that no documentary has yet been made about a character as colorful as Vivienne Westwood. The designer has such a rich past that her story could well become the script for an Oscar-winning biopic. It is also interesting that the director of the film, Lorna Tucker, managed to wander in her youth, then became a model, and then retrained as a music video maker. Perhaps such a controversial past bribed Westwood, and she gave the go-ahead to shoot the film, giving Tucker carte blanche: she opened the doors of her office, connected her team and family, and decided to plunge into not the most pleasant memories. nine0003

In the film, Tucker tries to bring out the three identities of Westwood – punk, fashion icon and activist. If she copes with the first two points very successfully, then a small scandal broke out because of the image of the Westwood activist. “This movie is rubbish. I don’t,” Vivien snapped. Her son Ben, who took part in the filming, was also extremely dissatisfied with the result, said that Tucker did not pay attention to the environment (the most important topic for Westwood), did not really reveal the history of the brand, and advised the director to make a donation to one of the designer funds. nine0003

One can argue with the last statement: probably, to the person in whose eyes Vivienne Westwood’s empire was born, the story told might seem banal, but the average viewer will definitely appreciate the film.

Westwood’s road to success was not just thorny, it left no hope for a quiet life either for her or for those close to her. Rebellion, protest and disagreement have been in her blood since childhood. The film does not tell about the period when Westwood, left with two children in her arms, was forced to live in a tiny trailer and eat wild berries. And after all, there were many such moments, and they are not limited to a couple of years and a few episodes. Constant problems with the authorities, arrests, attacks, lack of money and the destruction of her store on King’s Road turned into a routine. nine0003

Today’s Westwood is still the same punk from the 1980s: she swears when she sees an unsuccessful item from the collection, goes out to buyers and calmly declares that she is not interested in money and that she will only sell the things she likes.

The designer only softens when it comes to her third husband, Andreas Kronthaler. “I can say that I like living with him more than living alone,” she says, a little embarrassed. nine0003

Most of the film is not punk rock but classical music, and when it comes to the question of the Sex Pistols, Westwood lets out an exceptionally weary sigh. About the civil husband, partner Westwood and producer of the Sex Pistols Malcolm McLaren, the film also does not say much. His name is not taboo, but here he is not even on the sidelines.

The designer has always had a difficult relationship with the British press and television. She was accepted in Italy, loved in France, and in her homeland she had to defend her right to a place in the fashion world. Tucker includes in the film a fragment of Sue Lawley’s English broadcast, where the designer, of course, is not hounded (who would have tried to do this with Westwood), but ridiculed in a rather disgusting manner. It is worth paying tribute – Westwood had enough restraint and self-control not to send the television studio to hell. nine0003

The British Fashion Council also went to great lengths to belittle the designer’s accomplishments. “They gave the damn award to anyone but her,” says Joe Corr. Nevertheless, Westwood became the only British designer to win the award for two consecutive years.

Westwood became a fashion icon already in the 1970s. The designer recalls that her hairstyle – a short crew cut – was often reproduced in fashion shoots and that it was from her submission that the punk style got into the pages of magazines. In general, everything that the designer has worn and wears looks incredibly organic. Close-up shot of Westwood wearing oversized heels to view the collection. And here she, together with Kronthaler, is photographed in tight tights, adjusting her foil crown. And here is the opening scene – Westwood wakes up in the morning in a simple striped pajama shirt. nine0003

The designer has made something as simple as a T-shirt iconic. At the very beginning of her career, she bought them at flea markets, decorated them with chicken bones and chains. Today, her infamous T-shirt with a swastika, an inverted crucifix, the slogan “Destroy” and lines from the Sex Pistols song is a valuable exhibit of the Queen Victoria and Prince Albert Museum. There is some irony in the fact that in the film the museum curator puts on snow-white textile gloves and carefully unfolds the museum item, talking about all its features. nine0003

However, sometimes Westwood’s experiments and images went beyond. In a biography written by Ian Kelly, one of the Westwood sons says that he wanted to burn with shame when his mother, in a latex skirt and over the knee boots, visited him at school.

Kate Moss recalls how one day Westwood approached her on the backstage and said that if she were a lesbian, she would fall for Kate. “I could be her only lesbian love,” the model laughs.

Today Westwood is not very happy with the way her brand looks, believing that the company has become too big. In addition, the designer openly says that environmental issues and the promotion of the “Climate revolution” campaign excite her much more. Between opening a store in New York and preparing a report on environmental issues, Westwood chooses the latter. The idea to resist some invisible evil, according to the designer, has been with her since early childhood. nine0003

In the film, she says that after learning exactly how Jesus died, she realized that adults around lie, and evil is everywhere. “Fashion and environmental issues are interconnected with each other. I’ve always known that.” Westwood advocates for conscious consumption, for buying less clothes, but better quality. Sometimes it seems that she would be glad to close her offspring, but the company provides jobs for a huge number of people. However, you can always expect anything from a punk, an icon and an activist. nine0003

Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist will premiere as part of Pioneer Cinema and Mastercard’s Priceless Cities in Film Festival.

Vivienne Westwood is 81! 10 iconic things that the queen of punk created | POSH | fashion and style Her wild antics (like showing up bare-chested at an MBE) and her best shows (but in Westwood’s case, they’re all worth watching) are legendary. However, we decided to recall the most iconic things created by her. nine0003

1. Longsleeve God save The Queen

The famous oval-framed portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is the work of British artist Jamie Reed. He created it 44 years ago for the cover of the Sex Pistols album, which was called God save The Queen. The version of the portrait, in which the upper lip of Elizabeth II is pierced with a pin, Vivienne Westwood (then the common-law wife of the Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren) placed on a white longsleeve – she wore it herself and sold it in her London SEX store. Today it is kept in the collection of the V&A Museum in London. nine0003

2. Kate Libby’s shirt from the movie “Hackers”

It’s amazing, but despite the absolute cinematic nature of everything Vivien does, her clothes rarely get on the screen. The most famous appearance of the brand in the cinema is the wedding dress of Carrie Bradshaw from the first part of the film “Sex and the City”. The second – which for some reason few people know about – is the red shirt of Angelina Jolie (or rather, her heroine Kate Libby) in the 1995 film “Hackers”. The costume designer for the painting was Roger Burton. The shirt features a parachute attachment that Westwood introduced in the 19 collection.77 years old. The photo on the right is a mannequin from the Metropolitan Art Museum exhibition, for which the design was worn over a red shirt designed for the museum by Jean-Paul Gaultier.

3. Corsets

Vivienne Westwood was the first person in the fashion industry to rethink corsets. And she did it back in the 1970s – long before Dion Lee and the Ukrainian brand TTSWTRS began to use this element of the wardrobe. It was Westwood who decided that corsets should not constrain women, but liberate them. But the real popularity came to Vivienne Westwood corsets at 1990s – after the show of the spring-summer 1990 collection. Today they are also presented in London’s V&A Museum.

4. Mini Crini

“Mini Crini” is the name of Vivienne Westwood’s spring-summer 1986 collection, and the most iconic dress that the designer represents in this collection. Vivienne took inspiration from Victorian era outfits but made them more sexually liberated, and it was these mini-crinis that sparked a wave of general interest in lingerie. Rather, how to wear it as everyday wear. nine0003

5. Suit from the On Liberty collection

Vivienne introduced this plaid suit with a voluminous buttock pad for the 1994 On Liberty collection. Can you call it hypersexual? It is unlikely, he is rather just extravagant. However, it is this image that is considered one of Westwood’s loudest statements on the topic of female sexuality.

6. T-shirt with women’s breasts

This T-shirt with a picture of women’s breasts is not just another Vivienne statement on the topic of feminism. This is one of the most iconic pieces in the history of punk music. Westwood also designed the T-shirt with her first husband, Malcolm McLaren, and also sold it at the SEX store on King’s Road. Remarkably, it was worn by both men and women, and members of the Sex Pistols regularly appeared in public wearing it. nine0003

7. Naomi Campbell’s shoes

Naomi Campbell is said to be the first model in the world to fall on the runway without losing her contracts. On the contrary, after she fell off the 30cm platform at the 1993 Anglomania show, Campbell was asked many times by other brands to fall specifically to draw attention to the show. Today, these iconic shoes are also in the V&A.

8. Dress with children’s drawings

This is not just a dress. This is the wedding dress that Vivien presented at the finale of the 2008 Chaos Point collection. It was created only for display and did not go on sale, but it is noteworthy that small children worked on the print. Westwood came to the school and asked the students to make drawings about freedom fighters and the environment. nine0003

9. Buffalo Hat

This hat has featured in articles from the world’s leading fashion publications, is as important to Pharrell Williams as it is to fashion history, and it even has its own social media fan accounts. The world first saw her in 1982, when Vivienne Westwood presented the Buffalo Girls collection, and she entered the history of pop culture in 2014, when Farrell appeared in it at the Grammys. Just a couple of months later, Williams released a video for the song Marilyn Monroe – in it Buffalo Hats appeared in a great variety of colors, and a couple of weeks later the musician sold that very Grammy hat on eBay for $44,100.
