Paris, 1891. The artist Paul Gauguin comes to his agent, who at that time receives a visitor and tries to convince her that Gauguin’s paintings are not daub, but works of art. He tells the artist that none of his paintings have been sold and gives Gauguin a small advance. Gauguin with fellow artists in a cafe discusses the current situation. He tells them that it is “time to get out of France”, the climate here is disgusting and life is too expensive. We need to go to Polynesia, there they will find heaven on earth, they will hunt, fish and paint. Life on the islands is practically worthless. Who is with me? Gauguin’s idea does not inspire his friends. His family comes to Gauguin from Copenhagen: his wife Matte-Sophie and five children. They are placed in a cramped little room, the children complain of crampedness and stench. Gauguin invites his wife to go with him to Polynesia. She refuses: children should get an education, this is the only way to get out of poverty. After a farewell party with friends, Gauguin travels to Tahiti. nine0003

On the island, Gauguin settles in a seaside village near the locals. He reads a letter from his wife: your works are not for sale, I have no money, I am sending you a hundred francs, my relatives approve of our break, which I decided to. Gauguin rides home on a horse, taking a flask of alcohol. He falls to the ground and wakes up in the hospital. He had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital by a neighbor. The doctor tells Gauguin that he needs treatment in the main city of Tahiti – Papeete. He has heart problems and is diabetic. Gauguin leaves the hospital the next day. He tells the doctor that before he dies, he wants to visit the highlands in the center of the island. Gauguin is on his way. He admires the waterfall, eats mangoes, tries to fish in the streams. The artist reaches a Polynesian village that has not yet been touched by civilization. The local tribe welcomes the Frenchman. He is offered a local girl as his wife. So Gauguin meets Tekhura. The girl’s mother tells Gauguin: if after a month of living together the wife is not happy, she will leave him. Tehura tells her husband Polynesian legends about the creation of the world. nine0003

Gauguin brings Tehura to his place. He constantly paints her portraits, forcing her to take one or another pose. Tehura washes clothes on the bank of the river, a Polynesian guy stares at her. Gauguin tells the visiting doctor that he feels great. He examines the work of the artist: Tahitian Venus, it’s great! Gauguin clarifies: this is the first Eve, wild and chaste, she is like an animal. The doctor says the island will soon run out of canvases for your paintings. Gauguin complains of poverty, he has not received money from France for a month now. The artist and the doctor sit at night on the ocean and drink. In search of a canvas, Gauguin enters a shop owned by a Chinese merchant, he finds a piece of canvas, brings it home, processes it, primes it, and paints another portrait of Tehura.

Gauguin plays with children on the seashore. A neighbor, a young guy, finds a rifle in Gauguin’s house and aims at the artist.

Local people go to church. The wife asks Gauguin to buy her a white dress, she wants to attend church services in it. Gauguin says that she is already beautiful, he has no money, Tehure has nothing to do in the church. nine0003

Tehura goes to church. She is standing there next to a guy who is looking at her, his name is Zhotefa. Leaving the church, the couple goes to the forest thickets. Gauguin is watching them.

Gauguin and Jotef are cutting down trees, clearing them of branches. Gauguin carves sculptures from wooden chocks, Zhotefa tries to imitate him. Tehura tells her husband that she is hungry. The next day, Gauguin leaves for Papeete. There, in the market, he tries to sell his paintings, but for the whole day only one wooden sculpture is bought from him. He asks thirty francs for her, but receives only ten. He buys paint. Returning home, Gauguin hears his wife’s sobs in the dark: there are no candles left in the house. nine0003

Gauguin asks merchant Vey for a loan, he says that he also needs to feed his family, and therefore he works a lot. Gauguin goes with the fishermen to the sea. He manages to catch three fish. He treats his wife and reports that all three fish were caught on a hook that stuck into their lower lip. According to local beliefs, this means that such a fisherman was cheated on by his wife. Tehura asks her husband to beat her if he thinks so. Otherwise, his anger will not go away.

Gauguin sees Jotef making wooden figurines. He says the guy is doing well. Then he sees several identical figures. Zhotefa says that whites are buying them up quite well. Gauguin becomes furious and tries to take the chisel away from the guy. He does not give up the tool. nine0003

Howling old women gathered at home near Tekhura. The doctor tells the artist that his wife has had a miscarriage, but she will be back to normal soon. Tehura tells Gauguin that he wants to return to his native village to his mother. Gauguin promises to take care of her.

In a new white dress, Tehura goes to church. Next to her is Zhotefa. At night, Gauguin discovers the disappearance of his wife. He goes to Zhotef’s house, but his father says he doesn’t know where Tehura is. The next day, Gauguin and his wife moved to Papeete. There he gets a job as a docker. The Doctor still insists that Gauguin needs to return to France. There he will be able to improve his health, after which he can return to Polynesia again. Gauguin sees Jotef selling wooden figurines in the market. He asks the guy how much he gets paid. Thirty francs each. Gauguin, going to work, locks Tuhura and forbids her to leave the house. After his departure, Zhotefa appears. Returning, Gauguin does not find his wife. He sits on the ocean shore in sadness, returns home and sees Tehura. Why are you here? I waited for you.
