And when we were running a little late to pick up the baby, she was very understanding. Their facility is kept very clean and safe. Mojy, her family and staff sometimes would organize events (such as Halloween Party, New Year celebration, or summer picnic in the park, etc.) to reconnect with families whose kids grew up in her daycare. Our son loves Mojy dearly and is very attached to her family. History

Kensington Plata (c. 1890)

The area around Rock Creek Basin, where Kensington is located, was primarily agricultural until 1873, when the B&O Railroad completed the Metropolitan Branch, which crossed Montgomery County. A community developed where the new rail line crossed the old Rockville-Bladensburg road. This early settlement was first known as Knowles Station. In the early 1890s, real estate developer Brainard Warner in Washington, D.C. began buying land to build a planned Victorian community with a church, library, and local newspaper. Fascinated by a recent trip to London, Warner named his subdivision Kensington Park, the 10th and largest subdivision in the area that became the City of Kensington. After registration in 1894 Warner convinced the mayor and council to name the city Kensington. The historic core of Kensington was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Kensington Historic District in 1980.

Originally a farming community at Knowles Station, Kensington has become a summer retreat for Washington, DC residents looking to escape the capital’s wet summers. As the years passed and its residents increasingly remained year-round, Kensington developed into a commuter suburb. The greater southern portion, originally designated by Warner, has remained largely unchanged since inception and is a historically preserved area. Indeed, the only major changes to the basic layout of the city were the bridges at the original 1937 and the widening and widening of Connecticut Avenue, the city’s main thoroughfare, in 1957.

In March 1975, Kensington received regional attention due to the disappearance of Sheila and Katherine Lyon. The sisters went to Wheaton Plaza, a local mall, where they were seen by bystanders, including their brother. However, they never returned home. The case was not solved until 2017.

The city attracted nationwide attention three times in 10 months at the start of the 21st century as a result of events that took place within a radius of just a quarter of a mile. In December 2001, the city responded to complaints from anonymous citizens by banning Santa Claus from the annual holiday parade. Protesters arrived at the parade in droves, including dozens of Santa Clauses riding everything from motorcycles to fire trucks. Eight months later, an Amtrak train derailed near downtown when the rails separated at an overheated joint, injuring 72 people, although there were no fatalities. Then, on October 2, 2002, Lori Ann Lewis-Rivera became the fifth victim of snipers that terrorized the Washington area this month while cleaning her car at a gas station in Kensington. Kensington regained national attention in November 2020 when a railroad bridge crossing the 495 Beltway in front of the Washington Temple
was vandalized with the inscription “Surender Donald”. Many thought it was a response to then President Donald Trump’s refusal to concede in the 2020 United States presidential election.

Geography

Kensington is located in Montgomery County, northwest of Silver Spring, northeast of Bethesda, west of Wheaton, and southeast of Rockville . Its latitude is 39° 1′48″ N, 77° 4′30″ W.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of ​​0.48 square miles (1.24 km 2 ), all land.

While the city itself is only half a square mile, the Kensington Post Office serves a much larger area and extends into North Bethesda and the Wheaton planning area. Residents with this postcode (20895) commonly refer to Kensington as their hometown, although they do not technically reside in the “City of Kensington”.

The appearance and white color of the Washington DC Temple, located in Greater Kensington, combined with its location near the Capital’s Beltway, has made it a local landmark. Traffic reports in the Washington area frequently refer to a “Mormon temple” or “temple”.

2010 Census

As of the 2010 Census, there were 2,213 people, 870 households, and 563 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,610.4 people per square mile (1,780.1/km 2 ). There were 902 housing units at an average density of 1879.2 per square mile (725.6/km 2). The racial makeup of the city was 82.0% White, 6.1% African American, 0.1% Native American, 5.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.8% from other races, and 3.2 % from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 6.4% of the population.

There were 870 households out of which 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.8% were married couples living together, 10.0% of female households had no husband present, 2.9% of families lived men without a wife, and 35.3% did not have a family. 27.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54, and the average family size is 3.17.

The average age of city residents was 42.1 years. 26.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 24% were between 25 and 44 years old; 30% were between 45 and 64 years old; and 14. 8% were 65 years of age or older. The gender composition of the city was 47.6% male and 52.4% female.

2000 Census

As of the 2000 Census, the median income for a household in the city was $76,716, and the median income for a family was $96,394. The median income for males was $65,804 compared to $41,364 for females. The per capita income for the city was $35,919. About 0.9% of families and 2.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including none under the age of 18 and 1.3% of those aged 65 or over.

Commercial

The Noyes Library, Montgomery County’s oldest library, is located in the Kensington Historic District.

Kensington City Hall

Kensington is primarily a bedroom community for workers commuting to work in the Washington, DC area, but has had its own businesses, including Antique Row on Howard Avenue, West Howard Antique District and Kaiser-Permanente’s Kensington Centre, as well as art shops, restaurants, supermarkets, auto shops, hardware stores and others. The city has an Explore Kensington website that lists businesses, services, news, and events in the city of Kensington.

In the city of Kensington, a farmer’s market is held on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and is still used as part of the MARC commuter train network. The city is home to the Noyes Library for Young Children.

Events

Kensington Book Festival Day or World Book Day is celebrated on the Sunday closest to April 23rd. This daytime street festival is celebrated with live music, author readings, open mics, activities for children and adults, storytelling and books. Local authors, book artists, publishers, booksellers and literary groups take to Howard Ave in Kensington’s historic Old Town to show, sell and discuss their work. The Kensington 8K Race is held in late September and has been running since 1994. Attracting runners and walkers from across the District of Columbia, the event features three distances (8K, 2M and 1K) through the historic downtown area and along the surrounding neighborhoods. Every year Kensington has a Labor Day Parade.

Transportation

Kensington is served by four state highways. The most famous of these is Maryland Route 185 (Connecticut Avenue), which provides the most direct connection between Kensington and Interstate 49.5 (Capital Beltway) and Washington, DC. The other major state highway serving the city is Maryland Route 193, which follows University Boulevard and Greenbelt Road east of Kensington through the northern and northeastern suburbs of Washington, D. C. Two other state highways, Route 192 and Maryland 547, are short connecting lines linking Kensington to nearby communities.

Mark Brunswick Line serves Kensington at Kensington Station (Maryland). It connects downtown Kensington to Washington D.C. via Washington Union Station as well as northern Maryland including Harpers Ferry, West Virginia and Point of Rocks, Maryland.
