Dollanganger fandom canon

Virginia Andrews (born Cleo Virginia Andrews) V. C. Andrews is a collective pseudonym with Andrew Neiderman.

American writer, artist and illustrator. She was born June 6, 1923 in Portsmouth, Virginia. The youngest of three children, Virginia was the only daughter of William Andrews. She spent happy childhood years in Portsmouth, Virginia and lived briefly in Rochester, New York. The Andrews family returned to Portsmouth while Virginia was attending high school. As a teenager, Virginia fell down the stairs at school and suffered severe back injuries. Virginia went through severe pain. Arthritis and a failed back surgery forced her to spend most of her life moving around in a wheelchair. Virginia’s father died at the end of 1960s. Virginia and her mother left Portsmouth to live with one of her brothers in Manchester, Missouri. Later, mother and daughter moved again, this time to be close to another brother, to Arizona. Virginia became a successful advertising artist, painting portraits, painting and illustrating fashion magazines. Her first manuscript was so autobiographical that she destroyed it to keep it to herself. In 1972, she completed her first novel, Green Mountain. It has never been published. Between 1972 and 1979, she wrote nine novels and twenty short stories, of which only one was published.

In 1979, her new book “ Flowers in the Attic ” was published, for which she was paid $7,500. Her next generation novel reached the bestseller lists two weeks after its publication. Virginia Andrews died on December 19, 1986 from breast cancer. She was 62 years old. She was buried in Portsmouth, Virginia, where she spent her childhood years. Since her death, more than 54 million books have been published, and her books have been translated into Dutch, German, Hebrew, Spanish, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Swedish, and Turkish. Her fortune was estimated at about $8 million.

The Dollanganger series ( The Dollanganger series ; 1979-1986)

Andrews’ first series of novels, published 1979-1986.

“Flowers in the Attic” and “Petals in the Wind” focus on children: Chris, Kathy, Corey and Carrie, who, after losing their father in an accident, are imprisoned in the attic by their mother and grandmother. The novel tells about their imprisonment, the death of one child, the escape and later life of the others. The main characters of the third and fourth novels are Katie’s sons. The Shadow Garden novel is a prequel that tells the story of grandparents.

Flowers in the Attic ( Flowers in the Attic ; 1979)

Author: Virginia Andrews

Narrated by Catherine Dollanganger. In 1957, 12-year-old Katie lived happily with her parents, Christopher and Corinne, older brother, 14-year-old Chris, and 4-year-old twins, Corey and Carrie, in Gladstone, Pennsylvania. Their family is jokingly called the Dresden dolls because of their blond hair and blue eyes. Happiness ends on Christopher’s birthday – he dies in a car accident. The financial well-being of the family becomes a big issue, since Corinne never worked, and all their property and house were bought with bank money. The mother of the family decides to return to her parents’ home in the vicinity of Charlottesville, Virginia, which the children have never heard of. Corinne explains this by saying that Malcolm, their grandfather, did not approve of her marriage to Christopher and therefore cut her out of their lives. Now she again wants to woo her father so that he rewrites the will in her favor (the Foxworths, in her words, are fabulously rich, and Malcolm is very sick and will die soon). The trouble is that the grandfather should not know that he has four grandchildren, so Corinne decides to hide the children in the attic of a large house for just a couple of weeks, which later dragged on a little.

Petals on the Wind

Author: Virginia Andrews Chris goes to medical school, Katie takes ballet, and Carrie learns to deal with her short stature. It would seem that happiness is close, but an unhappy marriage, a threat to a long-awaited career on the stage, the wrong craving for her brother and a terrible resentment towards her mother are pushing Katie to a wild act – to beat her husband away from her.

Through the Thorns ( If There Be Thorns ; 1981)

Author: Virginia Andrews

Half-brothers Jory and Bart are raised by Katie and Chris, who is considered Paul’s younger brother. 14-year-old Jory is handsome, talented, following in the footsteps of his ballerina mother; 9-year-old Bart is clumsy, withdrawn. Katie decides to adopt the child of one of her dead students, which finally alienates her youngest son from her. Meanwhile, a mysterious woman moves in next door, who becomes very close to Bart and even asks to call her “grandmother”.

Seeds of the past ( Seeds of Yesterday ; 1984)

Author: Virginia Andrews

Description of the book: The story begins 15 years after the events in the previous part of Through the Thorns. Katy and Chris visit their son Bart’s house to celebrate his 25th birthday. The house is exactly the same as the Foxworth house that burned down in Petals in the Wind. Katie and Chris meet the butler, their mother’s brother Joel, who was thought to be dead. Bart treats Joel like a father and listens to him preach about religion. Jory is badly injured, his wife, who is pregnant with twins, has an affair with Bart, and Kathy tries unsuccessfully to reconcile the children.
