Meet Rachel Diane Basham, Our Center Director
Meet Rachel Diane Basham! She is the Center Director at Alafaya Woods KinderCare in Oviedo, Florida. Diane attended Seminole State College, where she earned a Child Development Associate credential. She has been with KinderCare since 1993. Every day, Diane enjoys helping children learn and discover their true potential. Her favorite quote is, “Do the right thing, even when no one is looking.” Outside of work, Diane enjoys gardening and arts and crafts.

Infant Programs (6 weeks–1 year)
Leaving your baby in someone else’s care is a big step. Everyone at our
centers—most importantly, our naturally gifted infant teachers—will work with
you to make sure the transition goes smoothly. When you step into our infant
classroom, you’ll see how much we want your infant to feel safe, loved, and
ready to explore their world.
Toddler Programs (1–2 Years)
Everything in our toddler classroom is designed for little explorers. That’s
because a lot is going on at this age.
When your child is wandering all over the
place, that means they’re learning and discovering new things every day. We’ll
help them explore their interests (and find new ones!) as they play and learn.
Discovery Preschool Programs (2–3 Years)
This age is filled with so much wonder and curiosity. That’s why we offer a ton
of books and toys and bring artwork down to kids eye level. Children in
discovery preschool also begin to learn how we all work together in a
classroom. Simple math and science, pretend play, and group play help them
get used to a more structured school setting.
Preschool Programs (3–4 Years)
This age is all about expression, when kids really start to form their own ideas
about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our
preschool classroom, your child will explore science experiments, create
artwork, and play pretend—all the skills needed for their big next step:
kindergarten!
Prekindergarten Programs (4–5 Years)
When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and
writing displayed around the room.
Labels are everywhere to help kids connect
letters with words. You’ll also see pictures on the walls that reflect the families
in our community. Your child will also deepen their knowledge in language,
math, science, Spanish, and social skills.
Before- and After-School Programs (5–12 Years)
You can count on us to provide reliable care for your school-ager while you’re
at work, with safe transportation from our center to your child’s school and
back! Whether your child wants to start a drama club, build a volcano, or
create a comic book, they will have a place to follow their dreams. Your child
will start and end the day with a whole lot of fun!
School Break Programs (preschool, prekindergarten, and school-age)
Winter break, spring break, summer break—when school’s out (but you still need to work), you
can count on KinderCare to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that’s focused
on fun.
We welcome children ages 5–12 during school break times and make sure they have a
sensational, screen-free experience they won’t forget.

KinderCare partners with Child Care Aware® of America to offer fee assistance for
Active Duty military families and flexible support to fit their needs when care at a Child

Cooking Academy™ (3 – 12 Years)
In Cooking Academy, kids learn new recipes from cultures around the world and
develop a healthy relationship with food. They’ll whip up everything from Southwest
rainbow lettuce wraps to pumpkin muffins, building their skills in STEM, communication,
and more along the way. And yes—little chefs get to eat their culinary creations!
Music Explorers™ (2 – 4 Years)
KinderCare families are already giving a standing ovation to our newest Learning
Adventures program: Music Explorers! Kids will learn to sing, move, listen, play
instruments, and even create their own tunes.
Our original curriculum blends math,
science, social studies, literacy, and mindfulness (think yoga!) for a uniquely KinderCare
way of learning the foundations of music.
Phonics Adventures® (2 – 4 Years)
Learning how to read is a whole lot of fun at KinderCare! We help kids grow to love
books and words (and get ready for kindergarten) in our Phonics Adventures program.
From discovering the basics of vowels to practicing poetry, kids learn all about letters
and sounds in small-group lessons made just for their age group. (Bonus: Kids who
attend our phonics program are more prepared than their peers for school—and we
have the data to prove it.)

We are parents of two children that go to KinderCare in Oviedo, Florida.
Our oldest, who is now four, has been going there since he was ten weeks old and now our youngest who also attends is eleven months old. We cannot say enough about this KinderCare facility. Your director, Diane Basham, runs an incredible center. She is a caring, compassionate professional who encourages an open door policy for parents offering any feedback or chooses to come with comments, questions or concerns. Our oldest has learned so much while being there, from socialization, to assistance with our potty training efforts, culminating to his educational development. The teachers have such a caring nature and wonderful attitude so you can see why the kids learn so much, because they love what they do. It is so rewarding to see such tangible results in our children, who also thoroughly enjoy the learning experience there; and we never fail to miss an opportunity to spread the word on the exceptional work of the staff there. Our sons were attending KinderCare full-time until about two months ago when Natalie was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Unable to work at that point in time, our two-income household was dropped to one, and we had no choice but to change them to part-time. While she was hospitalized during her first episode, Diane approached Sean and offered to help our family in whatever way she could when Natalie’s resulting doctors’ and physical therapy appointments caused a conflict with our children’s schedules at the center. This has served to bring some measure of peace in a difficult time. Diane encourages open communication, and we have always taken advantage of that when it comes to their development; now we do so at her invitation in this regard as well. She and the wonderful teachers at KinderCare-Oviedo have gone above and beyond for our family and we love and appreciate them for that. Our son, Johnathan has been attending KinderCare since he was six-weeks-old.
He is now three years in age. Every teacher that Johnathan has had the pleasure to work with has been amazing, specifically Ms. Diane and Ms. Sheila. My brother-in-law attended KinderCare when he was an infant, which was over 20 years ago, and Ms. Diane and Ms. Sheila were there when he attended. Therefore, I knew this was an amazing opportunity to have our son attend the same school with the same teachers. They are both so dedicated to the children here! We moved to Florida from Wisconsin when our son Jayden was 19 months old.
Before we moved down, we called around to child care facilities to figure out where would be best to place him. We started talking with Ms. Sheila. She was extremely helpful. Once we arrived, we also talked with Ms. Diane about our son, asking more questions regarding their learning center. Hands down, we decided that this was the best place for Jayden. It was one of the best decisions we ever made. Ms. Diane, Ms. Sheila and Ms. Suzie, along with the other teachers, have a sincere caring for all the children. It is a wonderful, positive environment for them to learn, develop and grow. Jayden is now eight years old and in the third grade. This KinderCare doesn’t pick up at his school, however, he has not missed a Summer Camp. The main reason is because he loves to meet up with his friends again. Do you support alternative diets?
We strive to be as inclusive as possible. To that point, we provide a vegetarian option at mealtime, take care to not serve common allergens and can adapt menus based on your child’s food sensitivities. If your child has additional needs, we’ll work with you to figure out a plan.
Are meals included in tuition? Can I choose to send my child with lunch?
We provide nutritious meals and snacks developed by a registered dietician to meet the needs of rapidly growing bodies and minds.
If your child has special dietary requirements and you would prefer to bring in their lunch, please make arrangements with the center director.
Does my child need to be potty-trained?
Every child begins toilet learning at a different age. Until your child shows an interest in toilet learning, we’ll provide diaper changes on an as-needed basis. When your child shows an interest, we’ll discuss how to work together to encourage toilet learning.

Our “Splash and Play” swim enrichment program is for children 3 years and older and focuses on water games, swimming-readiness skills, and safety in and around the pool. The pool is properly secured with fences and child-proof gates, ensuring children are only able to gain access during designated pool activities. Next to the church of Santa Maria del Naranco stands the former palace chapel of Ramiro I – San Miguel de Lillo. This temple in Oviedo appeared in 860. And in the XII century, as a result of a collapse of the soil, it was almost completely destroyed and rebuilt. It was possible to save the vestibule and the base of the three naves, as well as frescoes and sculptural decoration. They are considered the rarest examples of the Byzantine style in Spain.
Gothic architecture
The most striking example of the Gothic architecture of the city of Oviedo in Spain is the Cathedral of San Salvador. Its construction began on the ruins of the pre-Romanesque Church of the Savior at the end of the 13th century. The real treasury of the cathedral is the Holy Chambers. Three of the most important artifacts of Christian Spain are kept here: Sir – a funeral scarf from the head of Jesus Christ, the Victory Cross – the symbol of Asturias and the Cross of Angels – the symbol of Oviedo. Asturian Baroque
The road to the Cathedral is lined with palaces in the original Asturian Baroque style.
The heavy, squat and austere buildings of the 17th century may not look organic on their own, but in the old city blocks they are really good and they can be safely added to the list of Oviedo attractions.
The impressive Valdekarzana-Heredia Palace. Its façade is adorned with a massive coat of arms of the nobility and the scene of the first labor of Hercules, in which he tames the Nemean lion. Today it houses the Supreme Court of Asturias.
Neoclassical style
Most of the modern center of Oviedo was built up in the late 19th century in neoclassical style. An outstanding example of it is the building of the theater “Campoamor”, which appeared on the site of the Santa Clara monastery in 1892. It is the oldest opera house in Spain after the Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona, the real heart of the city and the site of major cultural events. The 30-meter statue stands on Mount Naranco and resembles the famous statue in Rio de Janeiro. The sculpture bears the name “The Sacred Heart of Jesus”. It was installed at 1980 year. For ten years, the figure of Christ was crowned with the historical symbol of Asturias – the five-meter Victory Cross.
But due to strong winds, it had to be moved to a pedestal.
Return of Williams Arrensberg
The sculpture in Oviedo by Eduardo Urculo, towering in Porlier Square, also reminds of important milestones in the history of the region. It depicts a middle-aged man in a coat and hat with an umbrella, surrounded by numerous luggage. The monument is called “The Return of Williams Arrensberg”, or simply “The Indian”. “Indians” in the principality were people who at the beginning of the 20th century left to work in South America. Returning to their homeland, the wealthy Asturians invested in the construction of beautiful churches, schools, hospitals and colonial-style villas.
Asturcons
Another symbol of Asturias, embodied in the urban sculpture of Oviedo, is the horse. A monument by Manolo Valdes stands in Escandalera Square and is dedicated to the local Asturcon breed. Her small but strong representatives are also called Asturian ponies.
For agricultural work, the Asturcons were tamed by the Celts when they lived on the Iberian Peninsula. And during the Punic Wars, the Asturcons fought in the army of Hannibal. They were carved in black marble by Eduardo Urculo, author of The Indian, in 2001. A similar, but more elegant statue, the artist placed two years earlier in Charles I Park in Barcelona and dedicated it to one of the organizers of the Olympic Games, Santiago Roldan, who once dropped: “Barcelona is an amazing city. Woody Allen

Name
In the late 1870s, people living a few miles south of the Jesuppa Lake need an easily incidental mail in the backwards.
Florida. Andrey Aulin, an early settler and shop owner, decided to file paperwork for the post office, and in his first location report, he required a name different from any other Florida post office. [10] Aulin loved the Spanish name, “in honor of the Spanish heritage of the state”, and decided to name his post office “Oviedo” after the city of Oviedo in northern Spain (capital of the Principality of Asturias) and the University of Oviedo. History
Up until the early 19th century, the area surrounding Oviedo was sparsely populated, with the exception of a few Seminoles and African American freemen who were related to the Seminole tribe known as the Black Seminoles, in what was then Spanish Florida.
In the Seminole, the tribe had large populations in other areas of Central Florida, such as nearby Jesup Lake. [18]
The population remained sparse until the American Civil War, when people, devastated by the war, begin to move south to start a new life. One mile southeast of Jesup Lake, a small village of settlers established the “Lake Jesup Settlement” in 1875. Letters from that era testify to the difficult life of the inhabitants of the city. Florida cracker settlers: Cook with wood fire, sleep under mosquito nets, and burn rags to keep insects out. However, there was a lot of wildlife. Initially, about 40 families lived in this settlement, but it quickly developed into a thriving trading port. The settlement was named “Oviedo” by Andrew Aulin when the first post office was established in honor of the Spanish heritage of the state. [19]
Several people have played a prominent role in the history of Oviedo. George Powell was one of the first settlers, owning a large tract of land called “Powell Settlement”, which today covers most of the northern part of the city, including the inner city.
One of Powell’s sons, Lewis Powell (aka Lewis Payne), became famous for being John Wilkes Booth’s chief accomplice in the plot to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. [19]
George Powell’s friend Henry Foster was instrumental in turning Oviedo’s citrus and celery industry from obscurity to prominence by providing Oviedo with reliable transport to deliver goods. He paid for the rail connection to Oviedo and founded the Lake Jesup steamboat company. Agriculture was Oviedo’s main industry throughout the 1940s. Foster was also responsible for establishing the Lake Enchantment area as a resort to entice visitors from the north to take a winter holiday. Foster encouraged settlers to begin attending regular church services at the site of the “Powell Settlement”, which would become the First Methodist Church of Oviedo. [19]
A citrus grower named Butler Boston is also credited with helping to create the citrus economy in Oviedo, through the successful grafting of the tangerine bud to grow mandarins, as well as the budding of succulents.
Temple orange from Jamaica to several deposits of Oviedo. Butler Boston was the son of physician Alexander Atkinson, who fathered Butler, as well as several others with freed black women on his family’s plantation. [20] Atkinson moved to Oviedo in 1871 with 12-year-old Butler to establish a medical practice and buy a farm. Atkinson gave the land to his son after the freeze when he returned to Georgia. Boston was so successful that he was hired to grow other Oviedo fields. He became a spokesman for the large black community in the area and was especially dedicated to improving their educational opportunities, as well as serving as a local school trustee. He was also an accomplished mason and oversaw the planning and construction of the new building for the Antioch Baptist Church. His legacy is today known throughout Oviedo, at sites such as Boston Street, Boston Walk, Boston Cemetery, Boston Hill, and Butler Boston Court. Its home site is where the Canterbury Retreat and Conference Center is located.
Its centerpiece is Gem Lake, named by the Boston family after a close family member. [19] [21]
Andrew Duda Sr., a Slovak immigrant, set up a farm in neighboring Slavia in the early 20th century. He left after failing to produce a successful crop, but saved up money and returned in 1926 to try again. The second time around, he had extraordinary success, and his farm survived the Great Depression. In fact, in 1939 he was able to build St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, which has since grown into a large Lutheran congregation. The Duda family founded the turf division at 1970s, which has flourished ever since and continues to this day. The western entrance to Oviedo passes right through the sod farm. [19]
Oviedo experienced a significant growth spurt during the boom years of the 1920s, and new buildings and banks were built on downtown’s main street, named “Broadway”. Some of these buildings are still standing today, as is the complex of buildings surrounding the Nelson & Co.
packing plant, which for decades was the center of Oviedo’s agricultural industry. This agricultural complex eventually stopped for good at 1980s after a series of winter frosts. At that time, commercial development had already replaced agriculture as Oviedo’s main industry. [19]
Oviedo changed from a rural village to a city and then, in 1967, became a city by special referendum. Five miles south of Oviedo in 1963, residents learned of the upcoming construction of a “space university” at Orlando Morning Guard . Many faculty and staff at Florida Tech (now the University of Central Florida) moved to Oviedo and new businesses and industries soon followed. Neighboring Central Florida Research Park, originally created in 1978, has since become the largest research park in Florida. This has led to a sharp increase in the population in recent years. As the city has grown, its animals have remained an integral part of the city’s image. Although pigs are no longer seen roaming free, chickens and roosters continue to roam the city center and have become an Oviedo landmark.

Historic city center
Most of the buildings in the historic city center were built in the late 19- early 20th century. In Nelson and Company Historic District, the R.W. Estes Celery Company Prehulera Historic District, the First Methodist Church of Oviedo, and several homes in Oviedo are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [22] [23] Nearby Oviedo Mall is adorned with murals of historic sites, as well as images of the area’s first European and African American settlers.
State Road 434, which runs through downtown Oviedo, is currently being widened and several buildings have been demolished. Oviedo Conservation Project [24] was commissioned to photograph and document the buildings for posterity.
An African American Oviedo pioneer named Matthew Powell founded the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in April 1875.
Lake Charm Historic Community is nearby, although not in the city centre.
This community, founded by Henry Foster in the 1860s, became one of the first resorts in Florida. It existed as a resort until the 1890s. Several winter houses built at that time still stand today.
New developments
In 2015, the city of Oviedo built a new city center south of the current “old city center” along Oviedo Boulevard. The new city center, named “Oviedo in the Park”, is a mixed-use development with townhouses, apartment buildings, restaurants and shops. It is centered around the new Central Lake Park, with an artificial lake, a large amphitheater, playground, and tribute to veterans.
A 64-bed hospital called Oviedo Medical Center opened in January 2017. In 2014, construction was completed on a new hospital emergency room, named “Oviedo ER”. Oviedo ER is a branch of the Central Florida Regional Hospital. [25] Oviedo ER is located on the corner of Red Bug Lake Road and West Broadway.
Oviedo Mall, a one-story indoor shopping center with a cinema built in 1998, has recently undergone a major renovation by its new owners, 3D Investments.
BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery [26] opened opposite the Oviedo Mall in August 2014. Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons of the rock band KISS organized the grand opening of their new Rock & Brews in Oviedo in January 2015. [27] In January 2016, Oviedo’s new expanded Townhouse restaurant opened a few hundred feet from its old iconic establishment, which was demolished to make way for a new road. [28]
Oviedo’s new gym and aquatic center features a waterslide, a children’s water park and a large multi-lane Olympic-size swimming pool. Oviedo’s Riverside Park has a swimming pool, as well as tennis courts and a skate park. [29]
Oviedo also has a YMCA, a golf course, a branch of the county library, Little League, a bowling/pinball center, a boat complex, and a kindergarten. Several large retailers in Oviedo include Target, Home Depot and Lowe’s among others.
Oviedo is also home to a variety of residential developments including Alafaya Woods, Whispering Woods, Aloma Woods, Remington Park, Huntington, Carillon, Little Creek, Sanctuary, Kingsbridge, Riverside, Riverwind Apartments, Twin Rivers, Waverly Woods and Bear -Scream.
Newer subdivisions include Oviedo Forest, Oviedo Gardens, Providence, Clayton Crossing, Stratford Green, trails, Living Oak Nature Reserve, and Oviedo Aulin Wharf, named after one of the city’s founding settlers and first postmaster, Andrew Olin.
Attractions
Black Hammock Adventures is a complex that offers airboat rides and live alligator displays. Lukas Butterfly Encounter is also located in Oviedo. The pinball hall, located in the Oviedo Bowling Center, has the largest concentration of pinball machines in the state. [30]
The Lights of Oviedo is a local roadside attraction. [31] A mural dedicated to this phenomenon is painted on the wall of the local Tijuana Apartment.

2004 hurricane season
In August 2004, the northwest side of Hurricane Charley passed directly over Oviedo while still a Category 2 storm. districts had no electricity for five to seven days. For one full school week, school was not held throughout the district.
Damage ranged from fallen oak trees to destroyed houses. The damage was worst in Palm Valley, a nursing community on wheels less than a mile from UCF. Damage to Charlie in Oviedo is considered the worst ever in Seminole County history. When even children are stronger
The Oviedo fan groups fought local battles among themselves for a long time, and the leading group did not appear on the Carlos Tartir.
Finally, in 1994, through the merger of mobs Brigadas Azules (“Blue Brigades”) and Pena Chiribi (“Chiribi Fan Club”), a firm with the unpronounceable name Symmachiarii was born. This word is Latinism, and in ancient times it denoted auxiliary troops in the army of the Roman Empire. These troops in the 1st century BC were stationed on the territory between modern Oviedo and Lugones. The guys bow before this ancient armed formation, not because it pursued the Asturian and Cantabrian tribes, but because the small Symmachiarii army completely destroyed the small port village of Khikhia, which will later be restored and go down in history under the recognizable name of the city of Gijon.
That is, even the name of the central company of the Oviedo football club reflects not so much love for their own team as hatred for the enemy Sporting. The guys do not hide this and say that their official ideology is Ovidism and anti-Sportingism. Simply put, for Oviedo and against Sporting.
The Symmachiarii have not had the best life for some time.
Due to their radical nature and direct relationship to the Hulls culture, the gang was not accepted into the clan of all Oviedo supporters and did not provide their sector at the Carlos Tartir stadium. The main enemy of the Symmachiarii was not even fans from Gijón, but an apolitical Oviedo group called the North Boys. Many fans and entire fan movements turned their backs on the club. At the first home match in the Tercera championship, only one group of fans met the team in the stands.

When a team goes through a big upswing or downswing, it often causes upheavals in the fan movement as well. This happened on the “Carlos Tartir” – a new Bollytsy stratum was formed, largely tied to the hulls current, and the Symmachiarii acted as the central association.
The teams, divided by different divisions, have not met each other for a long time, and the Asturian fans clearly miss their provincial derby. The Ultra Boys brigade took it for a fashion to make night trips to Oviedo, where they screamed and whooped through the city in cars, waving the scarves of their favorite club. The Symmachiarii also responded with similar antics, and no one seemed to know how much longer this kindergarten would continue, when suddenly it happened … Asturiano’s derby.
As you know, Oviedo has reached the handle – that is, sank into Tercera, the fourth Spanish division, infamous as a place where legs and arms can be torn off directly during the match. Tercera is divided into 17 groups, the teams are divided on a territorial basis, clubs from one province play in each group. And thus, Oviedo ended up in Group G-II, where one of its rivals was Sporting Gijon-B, the youth affiliate of the Rojiblancos.
Fans joyfully shouting “Finally!” Heaven thanked, and mass hysteria immediately began in both cities – let the fourth division, let only young people play for one of the teams, but here it is, finally, a real Asturian derby!
The first match was scheduled for February, and in preparation for the game ahead of time, Gijón Jr.
and Oviedo made a massive buying campaign during the winter transfer window. Deciding that anything could be done to win the derby, the management of Sporting announced three players from the first team and urgently sent them to Gijón-B.
Everyone was getting ready. In Gijon, realizing the important historical value of the fight, the match was moved to El Molinon, the main stadium of the first team (Sporting Gijon-B usually plays its matches in the small Esculea de Football De Mareo arena, which can accommodate three thousand spectators). From Oviedo there was such an abyss of fans that the fourth division, probably, had not seen anywhere and never. In general, the entourage was on par with the Example. Both teams qualified for the play-offs for promotion to the Spanish third division. Oviedistas were unable to improve their qualifications, while the youth team of the Khikhonians made it a division higher.
Sporting’s supporters celebrated this success as if they had won the Spanish championship, overtaking Barcelona, which came second, by twenty points. Hooking on eternal rivals, they wrote on their website: “Maybe who else to choose for the Asturiano derby? The confrontation with Oviedo, of course, is history, but of yesterday. You need to choose a stronger team as rivals. And then even our canter goes to Segunda B, and these freaks hang out in Tercera.
Not appreciating the humour, the Symmachiarii company, enraged by sarcasm, called the Ultra Boys festline to meet at the foot of the Cantabrian Mountains in order to restore parity with the help of fists. But sportingistas answered that they would not fight, since they were an ultragroup, which, however, does not require a separate explanation, because it is clearly read in the title. And if the guys from Oviedo are so stupid that they don’t understand this, then please let someone come to Gijon and someone – namely the Ultra Boys group – will clearly demonstrate who is in charge in Asturias not only in football, but in football life.
The Symmachiarii recently started a new grandstand performance. On their sector you can often see a large photo of the man who founded Oviedo, who was its president and brought the club two bronze medals in the Spanish championship. This is a photo of Carlos Tartira de las Alas Pumarinho, after whom the Estadio Oviedin is named. Members of the Symmachiarii point out that Carlos Tartir was born and spent his entire life in Oviedo, but, by a strange coincidence, died tragically on July 31, 1950, not just anywhere, but precisely in Gijón.
That is, the image of Sporting is demonized in every possible way in the eyes of very young fans.
The Symmachiarii even published a small pamphlet called “Team of Fools”, which published the most curious facts from the history of Sporting Gijón.
For example:
• Sporting CP is one of only two clubs in La Liga that, once a winter champion, has never won a national championship since;
• is one of the five Spanish teams that has never finished a championship in first place, even though they were vice champions;

• until 1982, Sporting was in charge of RCE (Partido Comunista de Espana, Spanish Communist Party) and it decided whether this or that transfer should or should not take place.
In addition, much attention was devoted to the “Oscar”, the annual award of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of the United States. In Spain, they joke that Gijón is the only team that won an Oscar. This refers to the painting “Starting over” by José Luis Garcia, who was indeed awarded the famous statuette as the best film in a foreign language. The film itself tells the story of a former Rojiblancos football player (he is also a Nobel Prize winner!), who returns to his native Gijón.
