Where is Houston (TX) – Gkd.ru
- October 18, 2018
- Directions
- Alexa Loktionova
Located in Texas, Houston is the fourth most populous city in America, the largest population center in Texas, the county seat of Harris County, and the economic center of the Greater Houston metropolitan area. Today we will learn more about where it is located, get acquainted with the history of its formation and other useful information.
Where is Houston?
Houston, welcome, we’re in trouble!
This phrase of James Lowell, the commander of the Apollo 13 spacecraft, is probably known to everyone. And every person who hears the word “Houston” is sure to quote Lowell. By the way, at the airport, guests are greeted by a figure of a cow in a space suit, and at the bottom there is a signature: “Houston, we have landed.”
The city is located 50 km from the Gulf of Mexico. It is part of the state of Texas. Houston is one of the largest cities in the United States, with an area of more than 1.5 thousand km².
Physical and geographical reference
Most of the city was built on forest land and swamps. By the way, they are still preserved in the areas adjacent to the city. This area is characterized by frequent rains and showers, so Houston often literally goes under water. The city is located at an altitude of about 15 m above sea level.
Climate and average air temperature
The zone is subject to subtropical monsoon climate. Throughout the year, southeasterly winds blow from the bay. The proximity to the bay is also the reason that the air humidity is exceeded in the city – in the morning until 90%, and by lunchtime – 70%.
The city of Houston is, roughly speaking, “gloomy”. There is only about 90 days of sunshine a year. And then, mostly in October and November. The remaining 160 days (mostly from December to May) are cloudy.
Spring and summer are hot but humid. During these seasons, the average temperature is +21 °C and +28.8 °C respectively. Almost all cars and buildings have air conditioners installed.
It is also relatively warm in autumn and winter. For example, September can be even hotter than May. In autumn, the average temperature is +21.8 °C, and in winter – 12.6 °C above zero. The absolute minimum was recorded at 1930 year – -15 ° C. But this is a rarity. Here the temperature rarely drops even below zero. Interestingly, in 1986, during the winter months, the temperature rose to 32.8 °C. Snow here is also very rare, mostly precipitation falls in the form of rain. Since 1895, the city of Houston has only seen snow 35 times.
Very often hurricanes hit the area. The largest in recent decades have become “Allison” and “Ike”.
Soil, rivers and lakes
Soils are characterized by the presence of sedimentary rocks and sand. Houston has a lot of geological faults, as well as deposits of mixtures of sand and clay, due to which oil and natural gas are formed from decaying organic matter.
Only four rivers flow within the city. The main one is called Buffalo Bayu, and the other three are its tributaries: Bres Bayu, Sims Bayu and White Oak Bayu. And in the suburbs there are two lakes: Conroe and Houston.
Flora and fauna
Plants and animals can be seen mainly in wetlands. Here live:
- Texas horned lizard;
- Houston toad;
- red wolf;
- ocelot;
- Canadian otter;
- bald eagle;
- American beak.
Houston and its suburbs have a lot of pines and palm trees, as well as other trees that need a subtropical climate to thrive. Plants such as orchids and magnolias are quite common.
The history of the city
In 1836, General Samuel Houston defeated the Mexicans, thereby freeing Texas. Houston became the state capital after its independence from Mexico. The city was named in honor of the general thanks to the Allen brothers, who on August 30, 1836 placed an announcement about the formation of the city here. August and John bought more than 26 km² of land along the Buffalo Bayu River with the aim of founding a settlement that would later become the capital of Texas, which, in fact, happened soon.
At the beginning of 1837, 12 people lived in the established settlement. Just four months later, the number of local residents increased to 1,500. In early June of that year, the city became the territory of Harrisburg County, which is now renamed Harris. Then he acquired the status of the temporary capital of the Republic of Texas.
In 1840, the first Chamber of Commerce was established to develop the shipping business. The development took place rapidly, which contributed to a significant improvement in the financial situation of the entire republic.
In 1860, railroads were built linking Houston to Galveston and Beaumont. And by the end of the 19th century, electricity had already been installed in the city, the streets were lined with blocks and cobblestones. There was even the first public transport – the horse-drawn carriage.
The beginning of the 20th century in the city of Houston (USA) was sad: a long hurricane hit, which raged from August 27 to September 12. If we recalculate the damage at today’s exchange rate, then it amounted to about $526 million. Eight people died. But the city continued to develop even despite such sad consequences of natural phenomena. At 19In 01, a large oil field was found near Beaumont, which was the beginning of the development of this industry.
In 1930, the city became the largest in Texas. Houston has overtaken Dallas and Austin in terms of population. When the Second World War began, this contributed to the even more rapid development of the city, as the United States was in dire need of synthetic rubber and petroleum products.
In 1945, the Texas Medical Center began to take shape. close to 19On the 50th, several suburbs joined the city limits, in connection with which it more than doubled in size.
One of the major events that to some extent determined the meaning of the existence of Houston and the state of Texas as a whole was the construction of the Spacecraft Control Center, which took place from 1962 to 1964.
Today it is called “NASA City”. Houston has a well-developed economy, home to the top 20 Fortune 500 corporations, as well as many representative offices of popular foreign companies. The city has a well-developed infrastructure (transport and logistics), has access to the sea, and the port is considered one of the largest in the world. In short, Houston is a beautiful, modern and highly developed city in many respects, with only one drawback associated with a high probability of hurricanes and floods. However, the population does not decrease from this. In 2017, this figure exceeded the figure of 2.3 million. If we take into account the surroundings, then the population increases to 6.1 million.
Houston Attractions
There are a lot of different significant places in the USA that tourists from all over the world like to visit. And Houston is not far behind. The hallmark of the city is Downtown with its skyscrapers. We can say that they create a recognizable image of the city, in which the characteristic local landscape is harmoniously combined with the spiers of JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo Plaza, Williams Tower and other huge buildings.
The second important object is the Johnson Space Center. There is an aerospace museum and a theme park with a huge number of spacecraft models.
For a successful shopping experience, visit the largest shopping center in Texas, Galeria. You should definitely visit the Old Market Square, the Downtown Aquarium and the Texas Seaworld Marine Park, which has been recognized as one of the largest in the world.
For a pleasant stay, Hermann Park is equipped. It has the Houston Zoo, an aquarium, and the Natural History Museum. Children and adults alike will love Tranquility Park, dedicated to the Sea of Tranquility on the Moon, where American astronauts first landed on July 20, 1969. Must-sees are Lake Houston Wilderness Park, Memorial Park, and Sam Houston Park. Here is a large collection of restored houses from the period 1823-1905 years
Landmarks
Houston has a whole museum district called The Museum District. It is represented by numerous galleries, exhibition pavilions, art and cultural institutions, as well as museums, which are considered the largest in the city. In 11 of them, admission is absolutely free, and in many others there are hours when you can view the exhibitions for free.
Also in Downtown there is an area called the Theater District, in which theater complexes are concentrated.
