My daughter has gone to this KinderCare since she was around 18 months old. There have been periods of turnover in the toddlers to 2s range, but things have been great over the last year or so, and generally much more consistent in the 3s and up and infants areas. Convenient for downtown office workers, NAEYC accredited program, and full 5 day a week preschool. Price seems consistent with the are… More

My daughter went to this daycare the first year of her life. It’s clean, decent size rooms (infant – toddlers -preschool) and teachers are nice. Though: there is a high turnover with teachers and we didn’t always hear about a teacher leaving. Teachers at infants were pretty steady, but at the time the toddler room had a lot of new faces all the time. I was not entirely satisfied with th… More

Our daughter Siena is 13 months and attends Seattle KinderCare (on 8th Avenue in downtown Seattle). She recently transitioned from the infant class to the toddler class. In the past few weeks, she has repeatedly come home displaying new skills, amazing my wife and me. Whether she is humming her A,B,C’s, “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” or “BINGO was his Name-O,” it’s clear that the Toddler teachers are engaging her and taking the time to teach her. This past week, she used sign language, which I did not even realize that she had learned at KinderCare! Most importantly, it it’s been clear since her time in the infant classroom, through her time in the toddler room, that the teachers at KinderCare truly care about her and her classmates. They sing to her, hug her, and laugh with her. … More

View of Seattle from the Space Needle

After reading a brief review of “How Much Does Life Cost in Silicon Valley”, I decided to share my opinion and calculations regarding the living of a family of four (two adults and two children) in Seattle.

Most IT and near IT professionals who dream or plan to move to America are thinking about Kremnieva, which is not surprising. However, often the first serious barrier is the high cost of living in the Valley.

There is a good alternative. This is Seattle, Washington. The place chosen by Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos for their Microsoft and Amazon. They are accompanied by the aviation giant Boeing, the mobile operator AT&T, the Starbucks mermaid, and a dozen or so less well-known companies and brands, such as Zillow and Costco.

By the way, the construction of a brand new office skyscraper is now in full swing in the city center. This is Google, which opens its large division here opposite the Amazon headquarters.

Amazon Headquarters

Let’s start, perhaps, small.

Living wage

  • $1700 minimum monthly fee for 2 Bedroom (living room and two bedrooms) and in less than desirable areas of Seattle. In Balview, Redmond and Kirkland, the price of such an apartment starts at $2000
  • 90,003 $200 is the average utility bill. In summer, the amount drops to $75-90.

  • $40 – Internet. This is the price for a speed of 60 Mb / s from the absolute state monopoly Comcast aka Xfinity.
  • $900 – food and change house. In general, the issue of food in the United States is quite acute: if you are for a very healthy diet, you will have to fork out, you can’t meet $900. But junk food is cheap, but there is nothing good in such food, so the budget for food should be increased in the first place.
  • $300 – health insurance for two adults. The fact is that children under the age of 19 in the state of Washington can be fully insured (Full Covered), while free of charge (or with a minimum monthly fee) under the Washington Apple Health for Kids special program. This is insanely cool help from the state to migrants with small children in their arms. Program details are at the link.
  • $1200 – for two children in the simplest kindergarten. There is an option: if the family income is low, the state will provide a place in the garden for free, but then you need to take care of the area of \u200b\u200bresidence in advance, in some places free gardens are very cool.
  • $80 – mobile communication for two. The service provider is T-Mobile if you need classic SIM cards. Local AT&T is outrageously expensive in this segment.
  • 90,003 $115 – public transportation with the local Orca Card (it makes the journey a little cheaper and the payment process easier). The price for one way is $2.75, for a total of $5.5 per day. Nuance: the municipal public transport control system gives the so-called “transfer” for two hours when you first touch the card in the payment terminal when you get on the bus. Therefore, if you first take the child (children) to the kindergarten or school, then everything is in order, the price will not change if you keep within these two hours. You can safely leave the bus, take the children, then return to the stop, and the next time you apply the card, the terminal will inform you that you have a transfer and will not charge a fare. A thoughtful gesture for humans, however.

  • $300-400 – other expenses. Clothes to buy at a sale, a snack on the go, fun activities on weekends and the like.

With this format of life, you can turn to non-governmental organizations, foundations and churches for help. For example, in the Salvation Army and the like. It is important to non-state ones, because if you go for official help and sit on the neck of taxpayers, in the future you will have serious problems with obtaining loans, for example, for a car, and even more so for an apartment or house.

Total: $4500-5000 per month after taxes. If you work together with your wife, then such an income per family is real, that is, the bar is not supernatural. Unless, of course, you are going to plow as cleaners in the shopping center. However, this bar does not interest us, since already established specialists mainly migrate to the state of Washington, so we are moving on to the average level.

Sign at the entrance to the world’s first automated supermarket Amazon Go

Standard

  • $2200 – rent of a normal apartment 2 Bedroom and 2 Baths (living room, two bedrooms and two bathrooms) with an area of 900 ft² (about 82 m²).
  • 90,003 $250 – the average utility bill will increase, but not very much.

  • $55 – Internet with a speed of 150 Mb / s from the same Comcast.
  • $1500 – food and change house. No big surprises here. Normal food and everyday goods – increased costs.
  • 90,003 $600 – health insurance for two adults, since you will most likely still be covered by the state’s children’s insurance program.

  • $2000 – for two children in a good kindergarten. Optionally, for that kind of money, you can already find a nanny at home for your children, but if you plan to stay in the USA for a long time, then a kindergarten is better, since there will be English lessons and socialization with children from all over the world.
  • $80 – mobile communications unchanged, since unlimited calls and SMS, as well as the absence of roaming throughout the United States, are almost the basis of any tariff plan for decent operators.
  • $240 – car. Gasoline here: about $35 a week for a full tank and insurance about $100 a month. Every six months you can call the insurance company and ask to review your coverage, if everything is without incident, then in two years the payment can be reduced to about $ 50-60. The issue of parking is mainly decided by the IT giants themselves, but if you do not work for them and drive to work in the very center of Seattle, you will have to pay about $7-10 per day.
  • $500 – other expenses. Here you can roam: blueberry farms for fun walks and at the same time collecting local sweet berries. Visiting tourist places like Mount Rainier and the national park around it: insanely fresh mountain air, the beauty of nature, clean lakes and all the things that accompany such a vacation, for example, a campground.

Total: about $7,000 per month . That’s around $150,000 a year before taxes. If you work together, in positions like a developer and a technical support specialist, then the amount is lifting, you will even save something to a savings account.

Amazon spheres with tropical gardens inside. Appearance – like the scenery from a sci-fi movie

Above average

  • $3200 – house. You can, of course, rent a 3 Bedroom apartment with an area of 1200 ft² (about 110 m²), but I don’t see the point anymore when you can already rent a full-fledged house on the market for that kind of money. There is such a moment: $ 3,000 per month is already such a good monthly mortgage payment, it’s a shame to give such loot just like that, it’s better to invest in your home. Therefore, when a family moves into the “above average” league, then everyone basically wants to take a house or apartment on a mortgage, but that’s a completely different story.
  • $400 – utility bill will increase due to real estate area, no surprises.
  • $55 – still the same Internet, at a speed of 150 Mb / s from Comcast. I don’t see much point in speeds like 300 Mb/s, 500 Mb/s or 1000 Mb/s for home internet.
  • $2500 – great food, trips to good restaurants with the whole family or together.
  • $1000 – medical insurance for all four family members. If you are already working as an FTE (full-time employee) at some Amazon, then most likely the company will cover your medicine in the form of benefits (additional “goodies” to the employment contract), and this item can be crossed out.
  • $2500 – a major kindergarten for a younger child and a good school for an older child (I predict that he has already grown up) or a first-class nanny who will develop a personal program for the younger child and will report on how the education is going.
  • $80 – mobile communications unchanged.
  • 90,003 $900 – good car loan for five years with a monthly payment of about $600, as well as gas and insurance.

90,003 $1,200 Additional expenses for clothing, household appliances, and more. Or saving up for a savings account for a later vacation somewhere in Hawaii.

Total: about $12,000 per month , $200,000 per year before taxes.
