AMERICA’S MOST ACCREDITED

We’re so proud!

Nationally only 10% of daycares are accredited – nearly 100% of our learning centers are. That’s a big difference,
and that means KinderCare kids are getting the very best. Here’s why.

SCHOOL-READY

What Learning Looks Like

Our talented early-childhood teachers set kids down the path toward becoming lifelong learners in a positive, safe, and nurturing environment.

Columbia KinderCare Programs

Infant Programs (6 weeks–1 year)

Leaving your baby in someone else’s care is a big step. Everyone at our
centers—most importantly, our naturally gifted infant teachers—will work with
you to make sure the transition goes smoothly. When you step into our infant
classroom, you’ll see how much we want your infant to feel safe, loved, and
ready to explore their world.

Toddler Programs (1–2 Years)

Everything in our toddler classroom is designed for little explorers. That’s
because a lot is going on at this age. When your child is wandering all over the
place, that means they’re learning and discovering new things every day. We’ll
help them explore their interests (and find new ones!) as they play and learn.

Discovery Preschool Programs (2–3 Years)

This age is filled with so much wonder and curiosity. That’s why we offer a ton
of books and toys and bring artwork down to kids eye level. Children in
discovery preschool also begin to learn how we all work together in a
classroom. Simple math and science, pretend play, and group play help them
get used to a more structured school setting.

Preschool Programs (3–4 Years)

This age is all about expression, when kids really start to form their own ideas
about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our
preschool classroom, your child will explore science experiments, create
artwork, and play pretend—all the skills needed for their big next step:
kindergarten!

Prekindergarten Programs (4–5 Years)

When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and
writing displayed around the room. Labels are everywhere to help kids connect
letters with words. You’ll also see pictures on the walls that reflect the families
in our community.  Your child will also deepen their knowledge in language,
math, science, Spanish, and social skills.

Before- and After-School Programs (5–12 Years)

You can count on us to provide reliable care for your school-ager while you’re
at work, with safe transportation from our center to your child’s school and
back! Whether your child wants to start a drama club, build a volcano, or
create a comic book, they will have a place to follow their dreams. Your child
will start and end the day with a whole lot of fun!

School Break Programs (preschool, prekindergarten, and school-age)

Winter break, spring break, summer break—when school’s out (but you still need to work), you
can count on KinderCare to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that’s focused
on fun. We welcome children ages 5–12 during school break times and make sure they have a
sensational, screen-free experience they won’t forget.

Participating Child Care Aware Center

KinderCare partners with Child Care Aware® of America to offer fee assistance for
Active Duty military families and flexible support to fit their needs when care at a Child
Development Center on the installation is not available.

Learning Adventures – Enrichment Program

Cooking Academy™ (3 – 12 Years)

In Cooking Academy, kids learn new recipes from cultures around the world and
develop a healthy relationship with food. They’ll whip up everything from Southwest
rainbow lettuce wraps to pumpkin muffins, building their skills in STEM, communication,
and more along the way. And yes—little chefs get to eat their culinary creations!

Music Explorers™ (2 – 4 Years)

KinderCare families are already giving a standing ovation to our newest Learning
Adventures program: Music Explorers! Kids will learn to sing, move, listen, play
instruments, and even create their own tunes. Our original curriculum blends math,
science, social studies, literacy, and mindfulness (think yoga!) for a uniquely KinderCare
way of learning the foundations of music.

Phonics Adventures® (2 – 4 Years)

Learning how to read is a whole lot of fun at KinderCare! We help kids grow to love
books and words (and get ready for kindergarten) in our Phonics Adventures program.
From discovering the basics of vowels to practicing poetry, kids learn all about letters
and sounds in small-group lessons made just for their age group. (Bonus: Kids who
attend our phonics program are more prepared than their peers for school—and we
have the data to prove it.)

STEM Innovators (3-8 Years)

You’ve probably heard a lot about how important STEM education is for your child, but
what does that really mean? Our STEM Innovators program takes kids’ natural ability to
make sense of the world and applies it to robotics, chemistry, coding, geology, and
more. While your child experiments, they’ll discover how to use technology to do
amazing things!

Our Teachers

We’re the only company in early childhood education to select teachers based on natural talent. Being a great educator isn’t enough though.
KinderCare teachers are also amazing listeners, nurturers, boo-boo fixers, and smile-makers. Put more simply,
we love our teachers and your child will, too.

Meet just a few of our amazing KinderCare teachers!

A KINDERCARE TEACHER WITH

An Artist’s Heart

“My classroom is full of art!” says Mary Annthipie-Bane, an award-winning early childhood educator at KinderCare. Art and creative expression, she says, help children discover who they really are.

We put our best-in-class teachers in a best-in-class workplace. We’re so proud to have been named one of Gallup’s 37 winners of the Great Workplace Award.
When you put great teachers in an engaging center, your children will experience
an amazing place to learn and grow.

Family Stories

Don’t take our word for it. Hear what our families have to say about our amazing center!

  • When we were pregnant, we did some rigorous interviewing and touring of daycare facilities, just as you probably are now, so I understand your concerns. We were impressed by staff, the lesson plans, and the philosophy of KinderCare. The location at Columbia is 30 minutes out of our way each day, but we felt it was worth the additional drive time and we have not been disappointed. Our daughter started attending when she was eight weeks old and has been there ever since. The teachers have exceeded our expectations! We have been exceptionally happy with her care and our daughter is excited to go to school every day, so we know she loves it, too! The education is outstanding and the teachers are willing to share with you the lesson plans so you can continue the learning process at home. I strongly recommend you give KinderCare a try. We are expecting our second daughter in the fall and there is nowhere else we would want to take her!

    Jim E. – KinderCare Parent
  • We toured many daycares in Columbia, MO.  KinderCare was the only one that we felt had a great Director who would provide structure and discipline, had strict rules that would keep my kids safe and healthy, and had an environment where my kids would be able to learn and play all day. After 3 years with KinderCare and 2 kids later, we are so happy we chose to have our kids grow up there! We love all of the caring and fun teachers, and our kids have learned so much while having awesome, fun-filled days.  We can’t say enough about the Columbia KinderCare!

Frequently Asked Questions

What accreditations does KinderCare have?

We are your trusted caregiver. Our centers are state-licensed and regularly inspected to make sure everything meets or exceeds standards, including child-to-teacher ratios and safe facilities. Our centers aren’t just licensed—most are accredited, too! Find out more.

Do you offer part-time schedules at Columbia KinderCare?

Everybody’s schedule is different. We’re happy to offer quality, affordable part-time and full-time childcare. Drop-in care may also be available. Reach out to your Center Director to learn more.

How does naptime work at Columbia KinderCare?

Our teachers meet every child’s needs during naptime. Our teachers know how to get babies to nap. In fact, they are pros at getting children of any age to nap. Visit our article on “10 Ways We Help Kids Get a Great Daycare Nap” to learn more.

Do you support alternative diets?

We strive to be as inclusive as possible. To that point, we provide a vegetarian option at mealtime, take care to not serve common allergens and can adapt menus based on your child’s food sensitivities. If your child has additional needs, we’ll work with you to figure out a plan.

Are meals included in tuition? Can I choose to send my child with lunch?

We provide nutritious meals and snacks developed by a registered dietician to meet the needs of rapidly growing bodies and minds. If your child has special dietary requirements and you would prefer to bring in their lunch, please make arrangements with the center director.

Does my child need to be potty-trained?

Every child begins toilet learning at a different age. Until your child shows an interest in toilet learning, we’ll provide diaper changes on an as-needed basis. When your child shows an interest, we’ll discuss how to work together to encourage toilet learning.

Guide to Preschools, Daycares, and Mother’s Morning Out Around Columbia

Making decisions about where to start your child’s education and where to seek childcare are some of the most important decisions we face as parents, but they don’t have to be intimidating ones. Columbia Mom has put together a list of the many wonderful options in and around The Midlands, giving you a one-stop shop for all of your early education and childcare needs.

A special thanks goes out to all of the sponsors who helped make this guide possible. If you would like your program included in this guide, let’s chat.

Shandon Weekday School

Shandon Weekday School is a licensed preschool and school-age child development center and has served children and families of the Midlands since 1958. The preschool program serves children ages infants through 4K; the school-age program serves children after school during the school year and in a full-day summer camp environment when school is not in session. Our goal is to provide a joyful, nurturing environment to foster social, physical, spiritual, and intellectual growth of all children. Curriculum and activities are designed to spark the interest of and meet the individual needs of each child while also providing for each age group’s needs and interests. Shandon Weekday School places great importance on giving children the necessary tools to be lifelong learners. SWS supports children of all races, creeds, and religious backgrounds.

Montessori School of Columbia

At the Montessori School of Columbia, we strive to develop the unique capabilities of each child. Guided by the work of Dr. Maria Montessori and informed by current research, our committed staff honors the natural curiosity of children. Our academically rigorous, self-paced curriculum allows children to work according to their own development levels. In multi-age classes, children discover the dignity of work as well as the importance of caring for themselves and others. Since we attract families from a rich array of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, MSC students learn to be citizens of the world. Our mission is to foster a love of learning that will guide and sustain children throughout their lives.

Heathwood Hall

Heathwood Hall knows young children learn best through experimentation and participation in their environment.   Our two-year-old to pre-kindergarten students experience these hands-on, active learning opportunities in the classroom, through our Tinker Lab, Art Studio, Life Science Lab, library, outdoor classrooms, music, Spanish, and PE classes that are all taught by experts in their fields. And as part of a larger school community with older students, our youngest children gain the benefit of countless other resources right on campus — from an exceptional dining hall and botanical greenhouse to sophisticated auditoriums and advanced technology resources — that are not typically available in a preschool environment.  When a strong classroom experience is matched with expert teachers who truly love their students, the result is a safe, nurturing environment that becomes the solid foundation for lifelong learning.

Hammond School

At Hammond, we see the infinite possibility in each child.

We’re here to draw out their genius. One day, each one of them will be ready to take on the world. But first, we nurture their innate curiosity and insatiable inquisitiveness in our Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten programs. We do that by exploring, well, everything—from Spanish to writing computer code. We have our own naturalist-in-residence to help us go on brilliant field adventures on our 110-acre campus. Our goal: give even our youngest students a headstart by learning to love learning. There’s no better preparation for whatever the future may hold.

At Hammond, every learning moment counts.

Saint Joseph Catholic School

Saint Joseph Catholic School’s 4K and kindergarten provide an ideal balance of learning, development and play for our youngest students. Our preschool classes combine traditional educational values with current best practices in early childhood education, ensuring your child is growing their social, cognitive, spiritual, emotional, gross and fine motor skills. Each child receives individualized attention, with the majority of classroom activities taking place in small groups and learning centers. This focused approach allows our exceptional educators to best assess the individual needs of your child. While the highest-quality of education is delivered, it’s done so with an emphasis on learning through play, be it singing, dancing, painting, hands-on games and show-and-tell. While a strong curriculum is vital to a thriving educational experience, it’s only half of the story at Saint Joseph. Our goal is to help your child build a strong character and sense of self, even at the earliest age. Our preschoolers have the opportunity to practice their faith on a daily basis. We stress the importance of giving back, being kind, having a servant’s heart and being a positive example to others.

Colombia – About the country | Bolero Tour

Location

Colombia is located in the extreme northwest of South America. In the north, the country is washed by the Caribbean Sea, in the west – by the Pacific Ocean.

Land borders:

in the northwest – with Panama,

in the east – with Venezuela and Brazil,

in the south – with Peru and Ecuador.

Climate

Colombia has a wide variety of climates, which are divided into hot with temperatures above 24 ; moderate – with a temperature not lower than 17, at an altitude of 0 to 1,000 meters above sea level; cold – with a temperature of at least 12 and paramo (cold highlands) with a temperature of at least 12 at an altitude of 3.001 meters above sea level.

Colombia has rich water resources: seas, swamps, rivers, underground sources, which create favorable conditions for river and sea transport, for the development of agriculture and animal husbandry, the exploitation of fish stocks, etc.

History

The first traces of human presence on the territory of present-day Colombia date back to the 15th-12th centuries BC. e. What is now Bogota was inhabited by hunter-gatherer tribes who lived mainly in the valley of the Magdalena River.

From the beginning of our era, Indians (Caribs, Arawaks, Chibcha-Muiski) lived on the territory of present-day Colombia, and Chibcha prevailed among them. At the same time, two cultural traditions differed in the Chibcha tribe – Tayrona and Muisca. The first lived mainly on the Caribbean coast, the second – on the high plateau of Cundinamarca.

The Chibcha Muisca had a highly developed society for those times, they were one of the most advanced civilizations in South America (after the Maya and the Incas). They created jewelry from gold and an alloy of gold and copper; gold plates acted as a monetary equivalent. The Chibcha Muisca worshiped the Sun God as the source of fertility and brought animals to him as sacrifices.

Travel tips in Colombia

! Russian citizens do not need a visa to enter Colombia.

1) Upon arrival in Bogota, if no one meets you, it is advisable to order official taxis. At the airport, there is a special module in which you will be given a ticket with the amount of payment depending on the route. Payment in other cases is made according to the counter, which indicates a certain number of units. The driver in the front seat has a table by which you can determine the amount corresponding to the number of units that is displayed on the counter display. Taxis in the city can be hailed simply by raising your hand

2) Do not leave things unattended.

3) It’s cool in Bogota, especially in the evening, don’t forget a jacket or sweater.

4) The safest regions of the country are Bogotá (not all areas of the city), Cali, Medellin (not all areas of the city) Cartagena, Santa Marta, Santander department, Amazonia (not all – only the Leticia region) and the coffee region.

When traveling to other regions, it is advisable to inquire about security in advance.

5) The tap water in Bogotá is potable, in all other areas use bottled water.

6) It is better not to travel around Colombia by car at night, or to regions that are questionable from a safety point of view.

7) When traveling by car, do not deviate from government highways. They are usually guarded by the army and police and are not dangerous to travel on.

8) You can pay in shops and restaurants in local currency – pesos or credit cards. Dollars or euros are not accepted for payment almost anywhere, except for tourist places. It is better to change money at exchange offices called “casas de cambio”, they can be found at airports, bus stations and shopping centers.

It is better to carry dollars as a currency.

9) It is customary in Colombia to leave a tip, but it is not obligatory. In restaurants or hotels, the size of the tip depends on your generosity, but usually does not exceed 2-3 thousand pesos (approx. 1.5 dollars). Very often in restaurants they are already included in the bill. It can be 10% of the bill or less. But if you are not satisfied with the service, you are not required to pay the tip amount.

10) Most Colombians do not speak English, with the exception of highly educated people, employees of expensive hotels, and some restaurants. Therefore, it is better to have a few of the most common Spanish phrases in stock.

11) Weather – there are no pronounced periods of rain and drought in Colombia. In the resorts, the temperature is comfortable throughout the year. On both coasts, the Atlantic and Pacific, the average temperature is 24-35 degrees. The water temperature in the sea is 24-26. Humidity approx. 80%.

12) In the highlands – Bogota, etc. it is advisable to use a sunscreen with a factor of at least 30. You can burn even with clouds in 10 minutes.

13) Intercity bus travel is safe and comfortable. But it is better to use trusted companies such as Bolivariano, Berlinas, Copetran, Expreso Brasilia, Flota de La macarena.

Tickets for them are purchased at bus stations. Or by phone.

Colombia

Country with the aroma of coffee and the brilliance of emeralds – Colombia

Full name: Republic of Columbia

Square 91,17451. km

Population: 48 870 000 people

Official language: Spanish

Official currency: Colombian peso

We are going to an extraordinary country in the north of South America. France, Spain and Portugal could easily accommodate on its area. The shores of the country are washed by the waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. In the center, mountain ranges stretched from north to south and plateaus stretched. The deep-flowing Amazon and Orinoco rivers flow along the southern and eastern borders. This country has tropical rainforests and deserts, endless savannahs and snowy mountain peaks, fertile valleys, waterfalls, impenetrable swamps. In terms of the diversity of flora and fauna, only Brazil and Indonesia can be compared with it. The Spaniards called it “the country of fabulous wealth.” It could become a paradise for the inhabitants. But everything here is very, very difficult. We’re going to Colombia!

Although the country bears the name of Columbus, the discoverer of America never set foot on its land. Although Colombia is crossed by the equator line, frosts occur in the capital all year round at night. Although the earth’s interior is rich in gold, emeralds, oil, and the whole world drinks Colombian coffee, every third Colombian lives below the poverty line. True, rich people here are fabulously rich, and income inequality is one of the worst in the world.

Although the people of Colombia are cheerful, cheerful descendants of Indians, Spaniards and Africans, they love dancing and holidays, the country has been in civil wars for two centuries. The government’s last war with Revolutionary Armed Forces guerrillas and drug dealers lasted more than half a century. Every tenth Colombian has become a refugee. In 2016, the warring parties signed a peace agreement. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for this.

CAPITAL city in which there is always May The Spaniards decided to explore the route by which the Indians deliver salt to the Caribbean coast. After 9 months, the detachment reached a fertile plateau high in the mountains. It was the center of a highly developed civilization of the Chibcha Indians. They called their capital-fortress Bakata.

The locals mistook the Spaniards for gods. In the valley stretched between the mountains, the aliens were allowed to lay their city. The Spaniards named it Santa Fe de Bogota. A few centuries later, only the word Bogota remained.

The capital of Colombia is one of the largest cities in South America; about 9 million people live in it and its satellite cities. A huge industrial zone with factories and factories has been created in Bogota, offices of international banks and companies have been opened. The city has a large “emerald district” where jewelers polish and cut gemstones.

Cordillera squeezed the city from the west and east. At the top of the city of Guadalupe, the statue of the patroness of Bogotá, the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, spread her arms wide. A monastery was built on Mount Montserrat in the 17th century. Colombians claim that the crucifix, which is kept in the cathedral of the monastery, cures diseases. Bogota is called the cycling capital of Latin America. “Two-wheeled horse” is the most popular mode of transport here. There are special paths for cyclists throughout the city. Large walking areas have been created for pedestrians, and sometimes entire blocks have been given away. The pavement in them is lined with red brick, and cars are not allowed to enter.

Bogota is located 450 km from the equator, but it is always cool in this city. During the day, the thermometer rarely rises above +18 degrees, at night, as a rule, drops to +5. We have this kind of weather in May. In Bogotá, May seems to be all year round. The Colombian capital is located high in the mountains – 2600 m above sea level, and here the climate is high. As in many cities in Latin America, the center of Bogotá is its main square, which bears the name of the first president of Colombia, Simon Bolivar. His statue stands on the square, the Cathedral and the Presidential Palace are located. If you come here at 17:00, you can watch the ceremony of changing the guard of honor at the Presidential Palace.

Bogotá is the best place in the world for graffiti lovers. The authorities of the city allowed to paint the walls of houses, and now artists from all over the world are rushing to Colombia. Someone always draws something. You can walk the streets of the Colombian capital like a modern art gallery.

The historical center of the capital is called Candelaria and is built on hills. In the old part of the city, narrow streets run down the hill. There are many churches here, low buildings under tiled roofs, carved balconies near the houses. But this is the only patch of the past. In general, in ancient Bogota, there is an extremely small amount of antiquity. In the middle of the last century, an uprising broke out in the city, which was suppressed by the army. As a result, historical buildings were destroyed by shells.

HISTORY

The first president of Gran Colombia

Simon Bolivar is the most popular hero in Latin America. They call him the Liberator here. The name of Bolívar is carried by the state of Bolivia, provinces, streets, the national currency of different countries. There are monuments to Bolivar everywhere, and the famous Colombian writer, Nobel Prize winner Gabriel Marquez wrote a novel about him.

Bolivar was born in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, and died on a ranch near the Colombian city of Santa Marta. He fought for the freedom of Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, and won his main battles in Colombia. True, at the beginning of 19in. there were no such countries yet, but there were Spanish vice-kingdoms of New Granada and Peru. In 1810, Bolivar began the struggle for the independence of these Spanish colonies and won more than 470 battles in 9 years.

In Colombia, a tourist route “The Way of Simon Bolivar” has been developed. As the legendary Liberator, you can cross the Kombeima Canyon on horseback. At this point, Bolívar’s army crossed the Andes. In the department of Boyaca, you will see the largest monument in Colombia – “Flying Horsemen”. Here, among the swamps of Pantano de Vargas, the fighters of the Bolívar army won an unequal battle. You will visit the banks of the Boyaka River, in the place where August 7, 1819Bolívar’s army completely defeated the royal troops of Spain. This day is declared a public holiday. The last point of the route is the Simon Bolivar Museum in Bogotá. in Bogota.

In 1819, Simon Bolivar was elected president of a large federal state – Gran Colombia. After his death in 1830, the state collapsed. And in Colombia, civil wars did not stop for two centuries.

Why doesn’t South America speak English?

Cartagena is the main tourist city in Colombia. Its historic center is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The conquistadors immediately appreciated the advantages of this place on the Caribbean coast. Cartagena de Indias became one of the first Spanish settlements in South America and the main port from which Colombian gold, silver and precious stones were sent to Europe. All the famous pirates of the Caribbean tried to attack the rich city. It was robbed five times, and the English pirate Francis Drake seized the port and demanded a huge ransom.

The historic center of Cartagena is surrounded by a high stone wall, and the fortress on the shore of the bay is the most powerful fortification in South America. Even when in 1741 the British kept the city under siege for three months, the fort survived. Since then, Britain has not attempted to take over the Spanish colonies in South America. The whole history of Colombia is closely connected with Cartagena. Simon Bolivar wrote the revolutionary “Manifesto from Cartagena” here. Early 19in. the rebellious city became the capital of the self-proclaimed state of the United Provinces of New Granada. More recently, in September 2016, a peace treaty was signed in Cartagena between the rebels and the government. The civil war that has been going on in Colombia for 60 years has ended.

A special red bus has been launched for tourists in Cartagena. You buy a ticket and become its passenger for a day. During this time, you can explore the historical part of the city, fly over Cartagena by helicopter, go on a boat trip around the bay.

In the land of countless treasures

For five centuries the Spaniards have been looking for the “golden land” of El Dorado in America. There was a legend that an Indian leader, strewn with gold dust, sometimes swims up there to the middle of the lake and throws gold jewelry into the water. “What wildness!” Spaniards were outraged. They could not understand that for the Indians, gold was not a symbol of wealth, but a sacred metal that collects and transmits the energy of the sun to man.

Eldorado gold

Eldorado was never found, but there is a place in modern Colombia that has the right to be called that. This is the Museum of Gold in Bogotá. On three floors, 36,000 gold items made by the Indians of the Tayrona culture are exhibited. You will see symbolic images of birds, jaguars, bats, snakes, frogs and other animals deified by the Indians. The shadow of a person projected onto the museum stand will help to figure out where and what kind of jewelry the Indian nobility wore. Some necklaces are liked even by modern fashionistas.

The golden masks look at you as if they still hold a secret. Once they participated in ancient rituals. The most unique exhibit of the museum is a golden raft, which is more than 3.5 thousand years old. It depicts the leader and his companions. They bring gifts to the gods. The Museum of Gold in Bogota is considered the richest in the world. Most of the exhibits are treasures that were recovered from the bottom of the sacred lake Guatavita. He was still found in the mountains of Colombia.

EXCURSION

Emerald Lottery

Dark green emeralds weighing more than a gram, if they are not flawed, are valued more than diamonds. The Spanish conquistadors called these stones “green ice” and hunted for them. The Indians considered them sacred and brought them as a gift to the gods. Until now, more than half of the emeralds on the planet are mined in Colombia.

In the Eastern Cordillera, 300 km from Bogotá, the richest emerald deposits in the world lie in a wide strip. The mining villages of Muzo, Chivor and Tunja attract everyone who would like to play the lottery with fate. Once upon a time, lone guajiro prospectors received a plot and sorted out stone by stone there. Today, all emerald mining is carried out deep underground in mines. Guajiros receive only waste rock, but precious stones are also found in it. Prospectors and miners live very poorly. But if luck smiles at the guajiro, then he will sell an emerald weighing 0.2 grams to resellers for $ 10. They will deliver the stone to Bogotá and resell it a hundred times more. When jewelers work with the emerald, the stone will be bought at an international auction for $10,000.

Do you know why gemstones are measured not in grams but in carats? In the old days, such stones were weighed using carob fruits – carats. The grains in its pods are small and identical. Later, when the gram became the unit of weight, the jewelers decided not to change anything. The carat weight is 0.2 grams.

Colombian miracle

Las Lajas Cathedral stands on the bridge over the gorge. From here, only 10 km to the border with Ecuador and not a single large city nearby. However, there is no more visited temple in Colombia. People go to Las Lajas Cathedral to ask the miraculous icon of the Mother of God for healing. The legend tells that in 1754 a poor Indian woman, Maria, and her deaf-mute daughter, Rosa, hid from the rain in a cave above the gorge of the Guaytara River. The girl was the first to notice in the depths a three-meter image of the Virgin Mary with a baby, and Rosa’s dumbness passed. It is surprising that for 250 years the colors of the miraculous icon have not faded. Yes, there are no such colors in the world! Studies have shown that they soaked the stone for a meter. All roads to the temple are hung with thousands of tablets. They were left by those who recovered.

The Zipaquir Salt Temple looks like an ordinary mountain from the outside, but it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Salt has been mined inside this mountain for more than a thousand years. And when the mine was closed in the middle of the last century, they decided to turn it into a temple. Through a long tunnel, visitors descend into the mountain. At the entrance to the temple there is a statue of the Archangel Gabriel and the words from the Bible “You are the salt of the earth.” Walls, sculptures, a huge cross above the altar – everything here is carved from snow-white salt and illuminated with colorful lights. The inside of the Zipakira temple is extraordinarily beautiful. But the main miracle is that people get rid of lung diseases here. Salt caves have healing air.

Who taught them?

The Indians of pre-Columbian America did not have a written language, but in some ways they were ahead of the Europeans.

“Genetic disc” and medical instruments – one of the archaeological finds in Colombia. Studies have shown that they were made about 6 thousand years ago. At the same time, the main stages of the development of the human embryo are depicted on the ancient disk, starting from the cell level. The disk, tools, and other objects are made of a mineral as hard as granite. However, the ancient inhabitants of America cut it like a tree, and even applied patterns. Some drawings are so tiny that they can only be seen under a microscope. Was there a microscope at that time?

Canals near the San Jorge River were seen from the air only in the middle of the last century. The river flows through the swampy lowlands of the Caribbean, and floods often occur in the area. The canals turned out to be a huge drainage system. Imagine, it occupies an area equal to half of Holland! And, just like the Dutch, the inhabitants of pre-Columbian America knew how to tame the water element. And they did it back in the 1st-7th centuries.

The lost city in the mountains near the Caribbean coast was discovered only 50 years ago, although the city is 12 centuries old. Of course, the Indian tribes knew where Teyuna was hiding, but they kept the secret. They believed that the souls of their ancestors lived here – the Indians of the Tyrone culture. 1200 stone steps led to the city. 170 agricultural terraces have been cut down on the steep slope. Between them – about 300 settlements. They were connected by stone stairs, paths, canals, bridges… Who designed this city? Why did the residents leave? So far there are more questions than answers.

NATURE

What is there!

The main attraction of Colombia is its nature. On average, there are more animals and plants per square meter than anywhere else in the world, and species of birds, amphibians, palm trees, orchids are collected like nowhere else on the planet.

On the southern border of Colombia is the Amazon, and moist evergreen forests cover more than half of the country’s territory. In the east, on the border with Venezuela, the Orinoco flows, and the grassy savannah, the llanos, stretches around. Swampy mangrove forests stretch for a thousand kilometers along the Pacific coast. Near the islands of the Caribbean – coral reefs. Colombia is the world’s most popular eco-tourism destination.

Multi-colored river, Liquid rainbow – as soon as they do not call the river Caño Cristales, which flows among the meadows of the Colombian province of Meta. And all because from September to November the water in the river seems bright scarlet, like blood. Don’t be scared, it’s algae blooming. The capybara is a popular pet in Colombia. The largest rodents in the world walk around the city on a leash, like ordinary dogs.

Rescuing sea turtles is a voluntary activity for members of the Colombian Navy. When the waves carry the babies far ashore and they cannot reach the water, the warriors return the young turtles to their native element. Extreme sports parks offer tourists a lot of thrills. And for Colombian children living in the Andes, flying on a steel cable over the canyon of the Rio Negro River is a familiar road to school.

“Coffee triangle” and the capital of Armenia

Coffee is the main crop in Colombia. But it grows only in three departments in the mountainous region of the country. They were nicknamed the “coffee triangle”.

Coffee trees cover the hillsides. Picturesquely look small estates – haciendas. And along the road, bright flowers flourished – heliconias. They are in Colombia like our field daisies. And so – from horizon to horizon. The cultural landscape of the “coffee triangle” of Colombia is recognized as a world heritage of mankind and is included in the UNESCO list. The owners of the haciendas willingly invite you to stay with them. You will see how the coffee berries turn red and ripen, you will recognize their sweetish taste. The coffee harvest in Colombia is harvested twice a year: in late autumn and spring, and then the beans are processed right on the estate. Do you know why coffee beans are roasted? Coffee is half sugar, and only after roasting does it have a caramel flavor. The city of Armenia is the capital of one of the departments and the coffee capital of Colombia. The National Coffee Park is broken here, there is a coffee museum, and in June there is a national coffee festival. The name of the city was given by a family of Armenian emigrants who had a plantation nearby.

Note to the traveler:

• Don’t be afraid to get lost in Bogotá. All streets perpendicular to the mountain ranges are called calle, parallel to the mountains – carrera. And instead of names – street numbers.

• If you come to Colombia in September, try to get to the international salsa festival in Cali. Both children and adults participate in it. And how they dance!

• Exotic fruits grow in Colombia: lulo, mora, guanabana, tamarillo, chulupa, sapota, cherimoya, jaboticaba. They can be bought on the street cut into a plastic cup.
