Following a petition from the citizens of Atlanta in 1973, the garden was incorporated in 1976 as a 501(c)(3) private nonprofit corporation. Atlanta Botanical Garden Inc. . The garden included the pre-existing Dr. A. Leslie Stevens Memorial Bonsai Garden, now known as the Japanese Garden. Within a year, Bill Warner, formerly of Holden Arboretum, was appointed as the first Executive Director. He was soon followed by Ann L. Crummond in 1979. The next year marked a turning point in the history of the garden, as a 50-year lease was signed with the city, securing a section of the garden for years to come.

A number of promotional events have begun, including social events, major art exhibitions, and the annual Garden of Eden Ball. The Atlanta Botanical Garden welcomed its 50,000th visitor just three years after the lease was signed – even before any permanent structures were erected. In 1985, the Atlanta Botanical Garden built its first permanent structure, the Gardenhouse. After that, the Kindergarten (1999), Fukua Conservatory in 1989 and the Fukua Orchid Center, which was added in 2002.

The Blockbuster Summer Shows began in 2003 with the TREEmendous TREEhouses project. Chihuly in the Garden opened in 2004, and in 2005 Locomotion in the Garden featured G scale model trains. On April 29, 2006, an exhibition of sculpture by A. Niki de Saint Phalle opened to the public. These huge mosaic sculptures came to the Garden from France, Germany and California. In 2007 David Rogers’ exhibition “Large Beetles and Killer Plants” was presented, and in 2008 “Sculpture in Motion, Art Staged by Nature”, a demonstration of moving kinetic art. In 2009The garden hosted an exhibition of monumental bronze sculptures by Henry Moore. In the summer of 2010 and 2011, the Garden featured a green expansion (see below), and in 2012, the Garden hosted an exhibition of modern sculptures by nine artists, “Independent Visions”. In 2013, the garden will feature an exhibition “Imaginary Worlds: Plants Larger Than Life” consisting of 19 mosaic sculptures of the culture. Chihuly in the Garden will reopen in 2016 with 19 installations throughout the garden.

In winter, a festive light show is organized in the garden. “Garden Lights, Holiday Nights” began in 2011 showcasing displays made with over 1 million light sources, most of which are LED. The Green Expansion Plan was a large scale expansion project completed in the spring of 2010 that doubled the size of the Garden and modernized it at the same time. The plan was built around five key areas of human health and the environment: sustainability, water conservation, energy efficiency, material selection and indoor environmental quality. The old garden parking lot is now a beautiful Edible Garden with a summer kitchen; this new garden reconnects people with food and healthy eating. And the final aspect of the garden expansion plan is the transformation of its old driveway into a large cascading garden filled with tropical plants and gently flowing waterfalls.

Atlanta Botanical Gardens is home to the Kendeda Canopy Walk, a 600-foot (180 m) walking trail that allows visitors to tour one of the city’s last remaining urban forests from a height of about 40 feet through the tops of the Storza trees.
