About International Day of Self Care

On July 24, the world celebrates International Self-Care Day. The date – 07/24 – was chosen to emphasize the main idea: in order to maintain health, it is important to take good care of yourself 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The purpose of the holiday is to promote the concept of self-care as a vital foundation of health.

The day was established in 2011 at the initiative of the International Self-Care Foundation (ISF), a UK registered charity that promotes a healthy lifestyle.

What is “self-care”?

“Self-care” or Self-care is a fashionable principle in recent years that has become a kind of cultural phenomenon of the 21st century. Social media is full of instructions on how to take care of yourself. But do we know what this concept really means?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), self-care is the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and manage disease and disability on their own or with the support of healthcare professionals. This concept recognizes people as active participants in protecting their own health. It does not replace the health care system, but opens up new possibilities.

Let’s turn to history

Self-care is not a new human activity. From the first stages of the formation of human society, people were independently responsible for their own health, as well as the health of their loved ones, trying to make medicines and apply them in various situations. As time went on, the need for increased health care capabilities increased.

The 19th century saw a great breakthrough in the field of healthcare, thanks to scientific and medical discoveries, technical advances in diagnosis and treatment, and the development of medicine as a professional branch. Patients gratefully passed this responsibility into the hands of doctors, who prescribed new, more effective drugs. The doctor became a mystical figure who possessed some kind of secret knowledge. Thus, a paternalistic approach was formed (from the Latin paternus – “paternal, fatherly”), which is still firmly rooted both in the minds of patients and in the practice of medical workers.

However, times are rapidly changing, and with them the needs of society are changing. The paternalistic approach every year is less and less suitable for modern reality.

Why?

  • A paternalistic approach is costly if applied to the majority of the population.

  • The level of education has risen, so people want to get more information and make decisions for themselves.

  • Lifestyle-related chronic diseases (cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes) have come out on top among the causes of death and disability, which means that only the person himself can influence their development.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2010, lifestyle diseases – heart attack and stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes – account for 63% of all causes of death in the world. In developed countries, this figure rises to 88%. This means that most premature deaths can be prevented by taking responsibility for one’s own health.

How to take care of yourself?

ISF has proposed a system of seven pillars of self-care.

1. Knowledge and health literacy. Often, medical information can be complex and confusing for a person whose activities are not related to medicine. Health literacy implies the ability to understand the data received, as well as to know where to find more information related to improving his health. It is also the ability to distinguish “good” information from “bad” information. Importantly, health literacy is a stronger predictor of a person’s health than income, employment status, education level, and racial or ethnic group.

2. Mental well-being. The World Health Organization defines mental health as a state of well-being in which a person realizes their potential, can cope with everyday stresses, can work productively, and is also able to contribute to their community. In addition to mental health, the second pillar of self-care experts include self-awareness and freedom of action. They are important because they are the starting point for any activity related to taking care of your own health.

3. Physical activity. Physical activity is any movement of the body produced by skeletal muscles that requires the expenditure of energy. It significantly improves health, fitness and mood. An active lifestyle can prevent many non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, colon and breast cancer, and dementia. Also, regular exercise gives a person many pleasant bonuses, among them: reduced stress, improved mental health, improved sleep, reduced risk of fractures, especially in older people. It’s never too late to start exercising, and for each age group, WHO has set its own rate of physical activity.

4. Healthy eating. Poor nutrition is one of the main risk factors for chronic noncommunicable diseases. The prevalence of overeating and consumption of low-nutrient, high-calorie foods has led to a global epidemic of obesity. Childhood obesity is a particularly acute problem, as an overweight child grows into an overweight adult who develops cardiovascular disease and diabetes earlier than their peers. Following the WHO recommendations for healthy eating will help improve health, as well as prevent a huge number of diseases, including several forms of cancer, heart attack and stroke.

5. Risk reduction. From a health perspective, risk reduction is the prevention of behavior that can lead to illness or death. Behavior that reduces health risks is the most affordable and easiest way to take care of yourself. What should be done to reduce the risk?

It is enough to follow simple rules: you need to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and then dry them thoroughly. Good hygiene habits also include proper food handling, regular oral care, and more.

7. Rational use of medicines and health services. A person’s proper use of medicines and other health products is an important element in maintaining good health and self-care. This empowers patients, for example, in easily recognizable conditions or exacerbation of chronic diseases after initial diagnosis by a specialist. What kind of goods and services can these be?

  • Prescription drugs after consulting a doctor.
