Work in Germany without German?. Is it possible to find a job in Germany without… | by CV ABROAD

4 min read

·

May 7, 2019

Is it possible to find a job in Germany without a good knowledge of the country’s language? Without the hassle of taking the TestDAF or DSH? Without certificates from the Goethe-Institut? We have collected information about all the pros and cons of finding a job in English in Germany.

So, are there any vacancies in German nature where only business English is enough? Eat. Jobs without German can be found relatively quickly in IT, high-level management, international companies, consulting and design.

At first, English is also enough in professions where there are not enough specialists: the visa procedure for them is simplified by the Blue Card program. What are these professions?

Again IT (programmers, software architects, SAP consultants, system analysts, database specialists, system administrators, computer network and security specialists), engineers of various fields, physicists and astronomers, meteorologists, chemists, geologists and geophysicists, mathematicians, statisticians, insurance rate calculators, biologists, botanists, zoologists and related professions, scientists and consultants in the field of agricultural sciences, forestry and fisheries, ecologists and environmental engineers, metallurgists, architects and landscape architects, product designers and textile artists, urban and transport network specialists, cartographers, graphic and multi-media designers.

If in IT work in English is a common place, then in other areas you still need to look at the requirements of the employer. But there is a chance to find a position. However, English should be really sufficient for communication with colleagues and clients. That is, a free spoken language, perhaps without complex topics and a rare vocabulary, but sufficient for business negotiations.

Doctors are excluded from the list. Although they are in short supply, they need German to start practicing in a German clinic with a recognized qualification. Actually, it is necessary already at the stage of recognition of this very qualification (Kenntnisprüfung, Approbation).

German at a good conversational level (C1) is required for most positions in project management, marketing and PR, HR and sales, Customer Support, most non-profit organizations and cultural institutions, as well as many positions in research organizations, in medicine and jurisprudence. This does not mean that there are no exceptions and that it is impossible to find work in English in these areas. It is possible, but you need a well-defined strategy, a strong personal brand (resume, motivational and cover letters, etc.), time and patience.

About the difficulties of finding a job in English

The competition for English-speaking jobs is MUCH higher than for positions where German is the main working language. Firstly, there are few of them: English-speaking vacancies make up approximately 3% of the total number of open positions (2016 statistics). Secondly, expats from other European countries and Germans with fluent English compete for them together with you.

Therefore,

– sending out a standard resume and a cover letter of three lines is not worth it. You need to go the other way. For example, the one described in our detailed PDF guide to optimizing a professional brand for Germany.

– you need to send an application quickly, before dozens of other applicants are ahead of you.

Where can I find English speaking jobs in Germany?

Classic exchanges Monster, StepStone and social networks XING and LinkedIn.

www.themuse.com

American site with jobs in Europe, mostly from yesterday’s startups like Soundcloud, which willingly take expats with working English. Not only is there a description of the positions and requirements for the candidate, but you can easily and quickly get an impression of the company’s culture from photos, videos and interviews with employees.

www.xpatjobs.de

Here you can look for a job in Germany not only in English, but also in Russian, Arabic, Chinese, etc. You can sort by areas and cities. There is an article and useful materials in English about work permits and other bureaucracy. Please note that if in other European countries you can find work with, say, Russian clients, then in Germany the Russian-speaking community is already large. Therefore, if you are still at home, then you are a more troublesome candidate than Russian-speaking applicants from Germany. Therefore, highlight your other competitive advantages in your resume and cover letter.

www.jobsinnetwork.com

Jobs in English in Germany and other European countries. You can upload your CV, sort by country, working hours, type of employment.

www.eurolondon.de

Here you can search by industry, employment format and languages. You can choose a combination of Russian-English.

Another option is to apply directly to well-established startups (Zalando, Lingoda, Babbel etc.) Their IT departments, like in many companies, are English-speaking. And companies that make language-learning products are often especially supportive of diversity and boast about language-learning employees.

Finally, don’t forget international NGOs and positions for academics at universities and research organizations. With relevant experience, you can also go here directly.

Is it possible not to learn German at all?

Will you feel comfortable without German? In a metropolis like Berlin, Munich or Hamburg, you can manage. But all the bureaucracy, correspondence with banks and other institutions will be in German. So… You should also not think that all colleagues will be fluent in English and not communicate with each other in German for your sake. This is a good tone, but few people practice it.

And if the company is not located in a metropolis at all, then it will be difficult to live in Germany without German. In villages or small towns, even basic English is not widely spoken by people.

Studying the language depending on the inclination and intensity of studies 1.5–3 years. In the environment, it is really possible to master German easier and faster, but only on condition that you study regularly. There is no magic “and talking” from standing in line at the supermarket – this is a myth.

If you are planning to move to Germany for work, then you will not have the time and energy to study the language from scratch at the same time. Still, moving is a lot of stress, and a rare brain has so many resources. So start intensive study at home. After all, having arrived with a good basic level of B1-B2, you can really get to C1 on the spot quite quickly.

How to find a job in Germany without knowing the German language

It takes a lot of effort to find a job in Germany without knowing the language. Immigrants who speak English and intend to learn German as soon as they arrive in Germany have the best chance of finding a job.

English-speaking immigrants can find work in Germany, but not every industry has specializations for such employees. It goes without saying that any employer will give preference to candidates who speak German.

Those who have not bothered to learn German yet must have excellent professional characteristics: extensive work experience and special skills. Also, the employer can be bribed by small wage demands.

It will take about two years to raise wages – that’s how much time it takes to learn German to the required level. After reaching level B1, it will be possible to either change jobs, or talk to management about a salary increase.

Vacancies without knowledge of German

Since German companies focus mainly on local customers, it is quite natural that employees should be able to establish contact with them, that is, speak German. Neither a doctor nor a government official can get a job without knowing the language.

But, for example, in some IT companies in Germany, English is in demand even more than German, since the activities of these organizations are aimed at the external rather than the domestic market. A lot of vacancies for English-speaking applicants are offered by SAP, the leader in programming the SAP enterprise management system.

Employment in large companies

The shortage of personnel still pushes employers to look for foreign workers. In addition, in large German companies with branches abroad, knowledge of German alone will not be enough, since the main language at meetings, in preparing presentations and conducting trainings is most often English. Examples of such companies include Volkswagen, Adidas or BASF.

It is practically impossible for English-speaking immigrants to get a job in a small firm, since such family businesses develop extremely slowly, almost all clients are representatives of the local population, so there is no need for knowledge of a foreign language in such firms. In other words, hiring an employee who does not speak German is like hiring a dumb person.

Work experience improves chances

Having work experience gives an English-speaking immigrant an advantage over those who have just graduated from college. There are enough people with a diploma but no work experience in Germany. Therefore, young specialists in any case need to learn German at least up to level B1.

Managers are ready to adapt to an experienced professional employee, even if he does not speak German. In addition, it will be more profitable to learn English up to C1 than to start learning German from scratch. Since the combination of experience plus perfect English is more preferable than average English and weak German.

Internal transfer

Foreigners without knowledge of German can also find a job in a situation where an experienced employee who is in good standing in a Russian company wants to transfer to the German branch of his company. Managers are guided by the fact that it is better to send a person familiar with the specifics of the company than to take a newcomer and teach him the basics from the very beginning.

There are also German subsidiaries in American and European companies. In addition, companies that have branches abroad most likely communicate in English within the company, so knowledge of German is a secondary selection criterion for candidates.

Job search through an international recruiter

This option is suitable only for high-class professionals, since not every recruiter will take unpromising candidates into his database.
