Consecrated Oil: What is the difference between Chrismation, Unction and Unction

At different times in the temple one can observe how the priest anoints people with some kind of oil. They call it differently: chrismation, anointing with oil… Let’s figure out what the difference is and why it is needed.

Confirmation

Sacrament of the Orthodox Church, which is performed immediately after Baptism. In it, a person is smeared with a specially prepared fragrant composition based on olive oil – myrrh, through which the grace of the Holy Spirit is communicated to him. Confirmation is performed once in a lifetime: at baptism or when Christians of some other denominations join the Orthodox Church, if it has not been performed before .

During the Sacrament, the priest crosswise anoints the forehead, eyes, ears, chest, hands and feet of the newly baptized with chrism with the words: “The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit. Amen”.

Miro – a mixture of olive oil, white wine and more than 40 incense (incense, galangal and ginger roots, rose petals and others). It is brewed and consecrated by the primate of an independent Church every few years on Maundy Thursday and sent to all dioceses. In the Russian Church this is done by His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’. Myrrh is brewed in the Donskoy Monastery in Moscow, and consecrated in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

Unction (Unction)

The sacrament of the Orthodox Church, through which the grace of God heals spiritual and bodily ailments. In this Sacrament when the body is anointed with oil the grace of God is called upon the sick, healing the infirmities of the soul and body . Unction is necessary in order to strengthen a person in illness, to support him spiritually.

For it, the participation of several priests is desirable (hence another name – Unction), but only one is allowed. In the practice of the Russian Orthodox Church, unction is performed on all who wish during the Great and Christmas fasts. They usually meet once a year. Unction can also be performed individually over a seriously ill person.

The composition of the anointing, which is consecrated during the Sacrament, includes olive oil and wine, as in the parable of the Good Samaritan. Oil symbolizes the mercy of God, wine – blood.

During the Sacrament, the priest anoints the forehead, nostrils, cheeks, mouth, upper chest, inner and outer palms. During the performance of the Sacrament, it is customary to stand with a lit candle in hand. When the anointing with holy oil takes place, the candle is extinguished. The anointing is performed 7 times after reading 7 pairs of passages from the Gospel and the apostolic letters. After the priest lays the Gospel on the head(s) of the unction(s) and prays for the forgiveness of sins.

Anointing with oil

Anointing with oil (oil) symbolically depicts the outpouring of God’s mercy on a person. It is performed on Sunday or holiday Matins (the service currently celebrated in the evening) after the reading of the Gospel.

Unction is not a Sacrament, but a rite. For him, they take the oil consecrated at the service or oil from the lamp.

During the anointing with oil, the priest anoints the foreheads of all those present at the service with the words “Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee”, “Most Holy Theotokos, save us” or simply “Happy Holidays!”. Before that, everyone approaches the lectern standing in front of the priest and kisses the Gospel lying on it and the icon of the holiday.

Before immersion in the font during the Sacrament of Baptism, oil is also anointed, which is consecrated before this reading of a special prayer, which speaks of oil as a symbol of reconciliation of man with God. The priest anoints the chest, ears, hands and feet of the person being baptized with the words: “The servant of God (such and such) will be anointed with the oil of joy in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
