How to Answer the Top Apple Interview Questions (With Sample Answers)

Ready to impress at your Apple interview?

The late Steve Jobs followed through with his vision for Apple, making it one of the most well-known, innovative tech companies in the world. The launch of the first Apple iPhone in January 2007 forever changed the consumer tech landscape.

Apple’s economic footprint is massive. As of 2018, the company supported 450,000 US jobs and is projected to directly contribute $350 billion to the US economy by 2023. And even non-tech lovers want to land a job at Apple! Apple employs individuals in several disciplines, including technology, marketing, administrative, retail, operations, and accounting.

If you’re part of the group that would love working at Apple, you’re probably not surprised to learn that the company’s interview process can be quite grueling; the company is known for asking a combination of challenging puzzle-based and behavioral interview questions.

How to answer Apple interview questions

When preparing for an Apply interview, you want to consider the position for which you’re applying and tweak your answers appropriately. One great way to do this is to carefully review the job posting for clues about the types of questions you’ll be asked.

Regardless of the position,  the STAR method is an excellent tool for answering their behavioral-based interview questions:

  • Describe the situation.

  • Describe the task.

  • Describe the action(s) taken to handle the task.

  • Share the results achieved.

Top 3 Apple interview questions

Below are three of the most commonly asked Apple interview questions with sample answers.

1. What is your favorite Apple device? Why?

On the surface, this question is straightforward. However, your response not only provides insight into how familiar you are with Apple products, but it also lets the interviewer know your level of enthusiasm for Apple and its products. Your answer can also provide insight into your knowledge of tech and how products function and work.

I do love all of my Apple products. I love their functionality and privacy capability when compared to other tech products and software. Though, when asked to choose, I would have to say my favorite Apple device is my Apple Watch.

It functions as my lifeline to my Mac and iPhone by letting me know when I might need to pull them out based on the real-time messages I receive without having to actually pull them out to check. I’m able to stay connected to my work and personal life with my watch, which also increases my efficiency and ability to effectively manage my time.

Tell me about a time you completely failed. How did you bounce back from it?

A behavioral question like this is a perfect example of when to apply the STAR method to respond. The interviewer will be listening for your level of honesty, integrity, resilience, and creativity.

Early on in my career, I was selected as one of the three tech liaisons to work with HR for a confidential layoff that was occurring within the IT and finance divisions of the company. Part of the management team conducting the layoffs was overseas, which required confidential transmission of information and documents. This was before cloud-sharing, so our communication was primarily by email.

We were up against a tight deadline to provide the proper severance communication documents, and I was responsible for submitting the documents to the team. I inadvertently sent the documentation to a name on the severance list instead of the hiring manager of that individual. Obviously, that was a huge fail considering the confidential nature of the communication, the fact that the individual was on the layoff list — it would be a huge blow for him to receive the communication ahead of time and by email.

Fortunately, I immediately realized what I had done as soon as I hit the “send” button, and I contacted my manager and the HR lead for the severance program. We were able to work with our IT network lead to retrieve the communication before the individual opened the email.

However, it was still a huge failure on my part, and I had to do the work to gain the trust of my team again. I took my time and practiced becoming more attentive from that point forward, and I did not make that mistake again. Eventually, I worked my way up and became a team lead for the IT department after a few years.

Tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager. How did you handle it? What was the outcome?

Your answer to this question can highlight your level of professionalism, conflict resolution skills, and creativity.

I was working with my manager to select a new supply chain vendor for transporting our goods to and from our warehouses. We had narrowed our options down to three possible providers. My manager was largely focused on cost-cutting due to the pressure she was receiving from her manager. Thus, the lowest-priced vendor was her top pick.

The vendor was a reputable vendor, but they had slower delivery times and a lower reliability rating compared to the other two vendors. My choice was to go with the vendor that had the fastest delivery times and highest reliability rating, though it was the most costly vendor when considering up-front costs.

Based on delivery times and reliability, I worked up some numbers that highlighted how reliability and shorter delivery times actually increased our bottom line over a 24-month period when compared to slower delivery times. The higher reliability-rating also meant a lower risk of disgruntled or lost customers due to issues with timing and lost orders.

My manager reviewed the data I had collected and decided to meet me in the middle. We went with the third vendor option, which was both of our second-ranked choices. It allowed for up-front cost-savings, as well as long-term savings due to shorter delivery times and increased customer satisfaction with their decent reliability rating. The company was still using that same vendor four years later, at the time I decided to move on from the organization.

Apple Phone Interview Questions

In addition to its popular and innovative products, Apple is known for its tough tech interview process and secrecy. It’s clear that Apple doesn’t want its candidates to hack the interview process. They are looking for people with strong fundamentals who can think on their feet and can come up with a smart approach within given time limits.

The secrecy surrounding the process can give rise to unverifiable speculations about what the process is really like. To avoid falling into such traps, you need to start with strong fundamentals and be fully prepared with everything they do tell you. Learn about what they value, and show them how you can bring that value to the company.

In this article, we’ll discuss Apple’s phone interview process — what it is, how you can prepare, and tips to help you during the interview:

Apple Phone Interview Process

Apple’s phone interview process typically involves two phone screens. Fortunately, Apple’s phone interview process is similar to the standard phone screens followed in most top tech companies. This is true for roles such as Software Engineer, Software Developer, Engineering Manager, and Tech Lead. However, Apple hires for teams —  so in addition to an initial phone interview with the recruiters, be prepared for 1-2 additional technical and coding phone interviews with the team lead/senior team member of the team they’re hiring for.

To learn more about Apple’s interview process, read Apple Interview Process Guide 2021.

The Apple Phone Screen Interview

Apple phone screen interview process includes behavioral as well as technical and coding interviews. Be prepared for anything they might throw at you! This requires strong concepts, lots of practice, and getting all the credible information regarding the process.

Apple Behavioral Phone Interview

Your first phone interview will be with a technical recruiter for about 30 minutes.

You can expect behavioral questions and questions related to your resume. During this pre-screen, the recruiter will also brief you on the hiring process. This is the most credible information you’ll get about what your particular interview process is going to be like. So listen well and ask questions wherever needed or appropriate.

Expect a break of about a week between this interview and the tech interview.

Apple Technical Phone Interview

This tech interview could be with a team lead, a senior team member, or even multiple team members. It could last for upto 60 minutes.

Anything in your resume that makes you a good fit for the role could be discussed. You must be ready to elaborate on anything written in your resume, especially the content relevant to the role. You can expect questions about your previous projects and achievements.

Expect a break of 1-3 days between this tech interview and the coding interview (unless they are both merged into this one interview).

Apple Coding Phone Interview

Here, you’ll be asked to solve a coding question with a focus on data structures and algorithms.

The interview will again last about 60 minutes, with about 30 minutes for solving the coding question and some questions related to your resume.

The coding process will be administered through a shared editor like Codility. As mentioned earlier, this coding interview could also be combined with the technical phone interview instead of being scheduled separately. After this interview, you can expect about a 2 week break before your on-site interview.

How to Prepare for Apple Phone Interview

Cracking Apple’s phone screening is easier compared to the rounds that follow. However, it is important that you do well — after all, the screening process is all about differentiating yourself from candidates with similar resumes.

Recruiters use this round to narrow down the pool of candidates for on-site interviews by eliminating those who wouldn’t be a good fit for the role or the company. Let us look at some tips that can help you prepare for Apple’s phone interviews.

  1. Research about the requirements for the role. Read the job description and see how your skills make you a good fit for that role.
  2. Read about the company. Learn about their values and any major news related to it.
  3. Ask yourself when, where, and how you’ve demonstrated the values and for skills they seek. Express them concisely in STAR or CAR format.

STAR format: Describe the Situation, then the Task you needed to accomplish. Next, state what Action you took to resolve the situation and/or fulfill the task. And lastly, mention what was the Result of you taking that action and the impact it made.
CAR format: Start by establishing the Context. Essentially, the Situation and Task in the STAR format combined forms the Context in the CAR format. Next, describe the Action you took and the Result of that action, just like we did in the STAR format.
For more details on the STAR and CAR format, read
Amazon Behavioral Interview Questions.

  1. Make preparatory notes, but don’t rely on reading from them. Prepare answers to all the previously asked phone interview questions you can find.

Do not memorize answers. Memorizing exact answers will increase the chances of you blanking out if you forget exactly what you had planned to say next. Preparing without memorizing will ensure you can adapt if the same question is framed differently.

  1. Maintain mental fortitude, especially when you’re preparing for something cognitively demanding.

While preparing, take regular, short breaks every 1-2 hrs. Get some sun during the breaks for some Vitamin D, which is vital for mental health. You can also do quick activities that relax you like meditation, breathing exercises, or anything else that feeds your “aliveness.”

  1. Pick up the same topic intermittently as opposed to doing it all at once and not touching it again for months. Spaced repetition spread over time boosts long term retention and will improve your confidence.
  2. Do mock interviews. Be ready with examples of when you handled a difficult situation/failure well, when you were a valuable team player.

At Interview Kickstart, you can learn from and practice mock interviews with FAANG Tech Leads and Hiring Managers. Want to learn more? Sign up for our FREE webinar.

  1. Have a good night’s sleep the night before the interview. Preparation doesn’t amount to much if you can’t perform on D-day. If it’s generally difficult for you to fall asleep before a big day, start winding down early in the evening:

Having early dinner and removing screens and other sources of blue light in the evening could help you in falling asleep on time. Also make sure that your laptop, headphones, camera, etc. are working properly, well in advance, so there’s enough time to fix any issues.

  1. On the day of the interview, make sure there are no distractions or noises and keep a notebook handy, as you may want to note down some of the information you get.
  2. Be punctual. If you have any issues and can’t make it on time, reschedule as soon as you know. Even after planning, things can go wrong. It’s important to have respect for the interviewer’s time and better to let them know beforehand.  They wouldn’t like having to reschedule at the last moment.

Tips for Apple Phone Interview

Now that we’ve looked at how you can set yourself up for success, let us look at how you can really get the best out of your prep on the day of the interview.

During the Apple Phone Interview

  1. Pay attention when the recruiter is describing the interview process. Ask appropriate questions to get a better idea of what will follow. It is important you get the most from this, because given the secrecy, it’s the most reliable information about what your interview experience is going to be like. You should make sure you at least learn from them all that they’d happily tell you.
  2. Dress professionally. Even if they can’t see you, it’s important you dress in a way that’s comfortable, but also shows you respect an opportunity. This will also boost your confidence and set you up better for success.
  3. Be humble, but confident. This means that your answers must show that you can clearly express your competence and are aware of your worth, but are also grounded as a person.
  4. Give 1- to 2-minute answers that directly address the question. The answers should neither be short, as that might leave the interviewer unsatisfied, nor should they be long, as that might bore/exhaust them. Longer answers also leave less time for them to ask more questions you could have scored on.
  5. Speak at a moderate pace and watch your tone. You don’t want to be too meek or overconfident.
  6. Be smart about salary negotiations. If you’re not ready for salary-related discussions in the initial stages, state that you’d like to take some time and learn more about the job before you can give your input. Negotiations get a bad rep, as if, if one side wins means the other has to lose. As the most successful negotiators will tell you, that is not the case. It’s about creating win-win situations that build your credibility, trustworthiness, and reliability over time.

Salary negotiation is a must-have skill. Read The Ultimate Guide to Salary Negotiation at FAANG for Software Engineers to hone your negotiation skills and get an offer that matches your value.

  1. When talking about the team or company use “we” instead of “I,” unless you’re talking specifically about your contributions or opinions. Also try to include action words wherever appropriate.
  2. Be present. Not every question has to be based on what you’ve prepared, in fact, expect that it won’t be. And when it isn’t, give a direct, concise answer that further shows how you can be a good fit for the role.
  3. Show what makes you unique and how you’re a team player. For a better understanding of teamwork and employer expectations, check out this article: Best Common Teamwork Related Interview Questions and Answers.
  4. Your answers should also show that you’re adaptable. In these times, companies are open to a lot of different backgrounds when it comes to hiring. But the industry moves too fast to allow long-term success for anyone who can’t adapt. And there are often too many people who know how to do something adequately. To set yourself apart from them, there should be at least one thing you’ve excelled in significantly.

After the Apple Phone Interview

Follow up after a week of your first phone interview, if you haven’t heard from them. It’s not necessarily bad news. They could be stuck, although they could also be close to finalizing their preferred candidate.

Apple Phone Interview Questions and Sample Answers

Q. Explain RAM to an 8 year old.

Consider your room. It has all your stuff in it — your clothes, toys, books, and so on. The room makes it very easy for you to access all the things you need, for whatever task you choose to do in a day: Get ready for school, do your homework, or play with your toys.

Now, consider the storeroom that, among other things, has your old favorite clothes, toys, books, and other school supplies that you may not need right now, but might, in the future.

If the stuff in the storeroom was also put in your room, it would make a mess and make it difficult for you to find what you frequently use. Or, if the stuff you frequently use was in the storeroom, you’d have to go to the storeroom and get an item every time you needed it and put it back there once you were done. This would make things unnecessarily difficult and waste your time.

Your room here represents RAM, which is short-term memory the computer can easily access information from. Everything isn’t and shouldn’t be stored in the RAM; the information that is needed right now can be easily accessed and efficiently used. All other information is on the hard disk, which represents a computer’s storeroom. If the computer needs some information from it, it doesn’t use it directly from the hard disk. It brings the information from the hard disk, puts in the RAM, and then uses it — just like you only go to the store room to get toys or supplies you need. You bring it in your room to use them.

As you grow old, the clothes and toys you outgrow are disposed of, but your favourites are stored in the storeroom. Similarly, all the important information in RAM is stored on the hard disk for the future, and other information is discarded.

Q. Apple’s name was changed from Apple Computers Incorporated to Apple Inc. Do you know why that change was made?

Initially, Apple’s focus was on computers. With time the focus shifted to consumer electronics. So in 2007, Steve Jobs announced the change in the name, stating this change in focus as the reason for the change in name.

The following are a few more questions that you can use while preparing for your Apple Phone Interview.

FAQs on Apple Phone Interview

Q1. Can I apply for multiple roles at once at Apple?

Yes. In fact, Apple may itself consider you for multiple roles as they deem relevant or necessary. However, even for related roles, don’t expect two interviews to be the same. A tailored approach is required for each position you apply to.

Q2. How long do I have to wait before I can apply again after a rejection?

If you fail on-site, you’ll likely have to wait for 3-6 months to apply for the same position. However, sometimes, if they find you’re a fit for a different team/role, you don’t have to wait so long, they’ll set up the interviews for that team/role for you. You can also apply for different roles anytime at Apple as there’s no cool off period restriction if it isn’t the same job you got rejected for.

Q3. What is the maximum number of times I can interview for a job at Apple?

While there’s a cool off period after a rejection for the same position, there is no limit on the number of times you can apply for a position at Apple.

(All answers are based on our research at the time of writing. We recommend speaking to your recruiter or checking Apple’s career page for the latest information.)

THE APPLE INTERVIEW

Looking to land a job at Apple but don’t know what the process looks like?

Well, you’ve come to the right place. Detailed in this post is a look at the timeline of the interview process, preparation guidelines, and what’s different or unique about Apple’s interview process as opposed to other tech companies.

(keep scrolling FOR A FULL WRITEUP with DETAILS)

THE APPLE INTERVIEW explained

BACKGROUND

Apple’s interview process differs from a lot of the other larger tech companies and that is in large part due to the number of interviews and their on-site process.

Apple usually starts hiring at ICT2; these positions are for those with 0-2 years of experience. The growth track ends at ICT6.

We’ll now go through the interview process, preparation tips, and a deeper dive into what makes Apple’s hiring process unique. At the end we’ll provide you with some sample questions asked in an Apple interview.

BEFORE THE INTERVIEW

updating your RESUME

The first thing you should do is update your LinkedIn and resume to be metrics / deliverables driven. Be succinct, show how what you’ve done relates to the position, and tailor it to the job description as it will better demonstrate how you’re a fit for the role.

PREPARATION

Here is our guide on how to prepare for the coding interview with a 12-week plan.

CHOOSING YOUR LANGUAGE

Apple, like most of the other tech giants, doesn’t require that you know any one particular language, but you do need to be proficient in at least one. Acceptable languages include: C#, C/C++, Python, Java, and a few other mainstream languages. It’s best to pick the programming language you’re most comfortable with and stick to it.

PRESCREEN with recruiter

From resume submission to first contact will take about a week. If the recruiter thinks your resume is a good match, they’ll reach out to you over LinkedIn or email. From here, the recruiter will ask you to set up a time to chat; it’s best to schedule this call as soon as possible so that you seem ready and eager.

This initial phone screen will last anywhere from 15-30 minutes. The recruiter will not go into anything technical; the recruiter mainly wants to gauge your interest level and see if you can speak to what’s on your resume. One-line answers won’t cut it for behavioral questions; spend some time reflecting on past accomplishments and how they relate to Apple and the role you’re applying for. As a best practice, be able to speak to each line on your resume for about a minute or two each.

Questions you can expect:

Why do you want to work for Apple?

What’s your favorite Apple product or services? (e.g. Apple Maps, Siri, Apple Pay)

What was your favorite project to work on at your last company and why?

Fare well here, and you’ll move onto the technical portion of your phone screen.

Behavioral interviews carry more weight than you’d expect. If you need a little practice, check out this free course:

Prepare for your Behavioral Interview

Technical Phone interview

If you’ve successfully made it through the prescreen, the recruiter will set up your technical phone screen with a hiring manager or a member on the team you’re looking to join. From pre-screen to technical phone interview will be about a week and then to schedule your next technical phone interview will be 1-3 days.

Here, you’ll have one or two technical phone screens which will be a mix of resume Q/A and a coding question centered around data structures and algorithms; the coding question will be administered through a shared editor such as Codility. Each of these coding interviews will be about 45-60 minutes where you’ll have about 30 minutes to complete the coding challenge.

Apple technical phone interview questions:

Collapse a binary search tree into a sorted list

Find circular loop in linked list

Give the complexity of various sorting algorithms

Here is a list of the top 15 coding questions asked in an Apple interview

Apple Interview Questions

ON-site interview

If you’ve passed your technical phone screens, then you’ll be invited to an on-site interview. Anticipate a 2-week wait period before being brought in.

Here is where your patience, skills, and domain knowledge really come into play. The on-site interview will last about 6 hours where you’ll meet with 8-12 people and in some cases upwards of 15.

Each interview will either be a 1:1 or 2:1 and will be about 45 min to an hour. For 2:1 interviews, if you start responding to an interviewer’s question and then proceed to write code, you might be cross-questioned by the other interviewer. Sometimes, they may pose a question one after another giving you little time to answer. In any case, make sure you take one question at a time, and stay focused. Take the time to understand the questions clearly and don’t rush.

Your on-site interviews will be a mix of behavioral, domain knowledge, and coding.

Behavioral:

Behavioral questions are a big part of Apple’s interview process. It’s a good idea to prepare a few anecdotes on your enthusiasm for Apple, how you work in teams, how you work under pressure, and times you’ve displayed leadership.

Apple really wants to find out who you are as a person and whether or not they could see themselves working with you. They’ll ask you questions about Apple products and services, previous projects you’ve worked on, a personal evaluation, and some questions to test how you think creatively.

Brand loyalty is huge at Apple, so be prepared to speak about different products you like, dislike (why?), and where you think improvements can be made. Whatever the questions may be, do not take them lightly and bring your full attention.

Domain Knowledge:

Apple interviews for specific teams (i.e. Maps, Calendar, Siri, etc.) so they expect you to know the product or service you’re interviewing for, ideas about how it works (Siri for example), and the complications that go into building it. The questions asked will be related to the work the team is doing and the problems they’re trying to actively solve. So for example, if you were looking to join the iOS team, it’s good to have a strong foundation on operating systems and the challenges associated with them.

Coding:

Be prepared to work through questions on a whiteboard and discuss your thought process, as your interviewer will look at how you approach problems, what questions you ask, and other approaches you may be able to take. In many cases, your interviewer is not so much concerned with whether or not you solved the problem (which is important) but rather how you think about the problem. It’s important to articulate your thought process throughout.

Data structures you should know

Arrays, Linked Lists, Stacks, Queues, Trees, Graphs, Heaps, Hash sets, Hash maps

Algorithms you should know

Depth first search, Breadth first search, Binary search, Quicksort, Mergesort, Dynamic programming, Divide and conquer

Note: For higher level candidates (3-5 years of experience) you can expect questions on system design.

Don’t forget about the lunch interview. Whereas at some companies this is more of a light conversation, at Apple, lunch acts as another interview — and it will be technical/domain specific. It can’t be stressed enough that you must be comfortable talking about your domain expertise and how you can make an impact to the problems they’re solving now and in the future.

Prepare for your Coding Interview

THE OFFER / NO offer

At this stage, you can expect to hear from your recruiter within a week. However, if you don’t hear from them, it’s best to send them a friendly reminder email so that you stay top of mind for them. From the first contact to the offer, you can expect the whole process to take about 1.5 to 2 months.

In the event you don’t receive an offer, you’ll most likely have to wait 3-6 months before reapplying for that same position. But it’s recommended that you keep your options open as recruiters will often consider you for multiple roles as they see fit, so keep an open mind and browse through a few that are interesting to you and that align with your career path.

If your interviews went well, Apple will reach out to you, at which point they’ll make you an offer, send you documents to sign, and discuss any further questions you have.

WHAT’S DIFFERENT

FaceTime interview

For your phone screens you’ll most likely be using FaceTime (it may be over Skype as well).

2:1 interviews

Questions will come at you fast, so practice thinking under pressure, and prepare for interruptions which can throw off your thought process.

Interviewing is team specific

HOW TO BEST PREPARE FOR YOUR INTERVIEW

In our experience, it’s best not to try to memorize specific questions. There are no silver bullets.

The questions that companies ask are always changing, because companies of this size are always trying to stay ahead of the curve and try new things. The questions you face will also depend on the team and the hiring manager.

Instead, it’s best to work your way through the fundamentals so you understand the underlying concepts and can answer even new types of interview questions with confidence.

Said on air, Society, apples, Health, Rimma Moisenko, Fruits, Podcasts – Radio Sputnik, Nutrition Moisenko. July 25, 2021 Does the presence of useful substances in the fetus depend on its color, said Rimma Moisenko, candidate of medical sciences, nutritionist, head physician of the Rimmarita clinic.

“If we are talking about a healthy person with a normal ability to digest apples, then red, green, and yellow apples are useful for us. If we are talking about an aged person, then we need to choose apples with the least amount of excess fructose, neutral – not sweet and not sour. As a rule, these are yellow-green apples. The content of vitamins and microelements is almost the same, no matter what color the apple is,” Rimma Moisenko clarified in an interview with Sputnik radio.

In order not to overload digestion, she continued, it is better to eat apples in the first half of the day, at least not later than afternoon tea. The daily norm at the end of summer – the beginning of autumn, when apples of a new crop go on sale, is up to 300 grams, the doctor added.

“In the winter, spring period, 100 grams of apples are enough. Now, when it is possible to get fresh apples, 300 grams is a normal amount that you can eat and increase your health. If there are too many apples, then there will be no appetite, and you will go replacing apples with protein products, fiber. This is unreasonable, because a healthy person needs variety, “Rimma Moisenko explained.

Apples are best eaten with the skin on, the nutritionist advised. And it is not at all necessary, according to her, to discard the fruit if you find in it a passage made by the larva of the codling moth (which in everyday life is called a worm).

“It is not necessary to peel an apple to the pulp: the peel is healthy, contains polyphenolic substances, a large amount of antioxidants, indigestible fiber. You just need to wash it well. If the apple is wormy, then this is a good apple, not full of nitrates, pesticides. It must be washed and lightly cleaned the damaged part with a knife,” advised Rimma Moisenko.

The nutritionist also noted that people with diseases of the pancreas and intestines are better off not eating apples at all or eating them only in the liver state. 9August 3, 2021 Only selected quotes in our Telegram channel .

For peace and freedom, or what elections teach.

Interview with Yabloko’s elected candidate in Moscow, Vasily Dikarev

Vasily Dikarev is one of four Yabloko candidates in Moscow who managed to win the September 11 municipal elections. Since 2017, he has been a deputy of the Yakimanka district, along with eight other Yabloko members. Now the situation in the Council has changed exactly the opposite: Dikarev will be the only deputy from Yabloko in the company of nine United Russia members. 9Vasily Dikarev said in an interview with yabloko.ru.

– All Yabloko candidates both in Moscow and in other regions went to the polls under the slogan “For Peace and Freedom”. Given the circumstances in which we live today, were you not afraid to campaign under such a slogan?

No, I wasn’t scared. Firstly, from a legal point of view, such slogans are not yet imprisoned, unless they are pickets or flash mobs. Therefore, we did not have any warnings from the prosecutor’s office or anything like that. “Apple” for peace and freedom is a very understandable and simple slogan.

– Do you think you managed to win because the residents of Yakimanka support this slogan?

First, we were able to mobilize our electorate, those who are against the special operation. Because this figure reaches 30, and maybe up to 40 percent, these are those who are strongly against, to which I include myself, and also those who are rather against the special operation. In our country, even according to unfortunate opinion polls, society is already practically divided in half on this issue. Unfortunately, we also have enough people in Yakimanka who support a special military operation, or people who do not think about it at all.

Secondly, we have five years of experience in dealing with local problems. We worked well, accumulated a positive image. I believe that in many ways I managed to do this, because during these 5 years I did not spare either time or effort and completely devoted myself to work. Only two deputies worked more than me. This is Andrei Morev, of course, he was the head of the Yakimanka Defense Ministry, for him it was a permanent job, and, of course, he would have taken first place now if he had not been removed. There is no doubt, on paper for sure. If we count only paper elections, we took most of the mandates. DEG ( Remote electronic voting ) knocked us down. And the second deputy is Dmitry Petrov.

– What did you face during this campaign compared to the 2017 elections?

This is, of course, an unprecedented withdrawal of candidates. Then we were not afraid of anything. We were careful, of course, but there was no pressure on us. We were not taken to the police, TEC ( Territorial Electoral Commission ) was quite loyal to us then. The chairperson of the commission nominated by United Russia did not put any obstacles in our way. Yes, she checked our documents in detail, then we were still collecting signatures. But no one rejected us a single signature, and they admitted almost all candidates who wanted to. Then we had much less experience, but the main thing is that United Russia did not campaign then. Its candidates apparently relied on administrative resources. In addition, in the 17th year there was an obvious drying up of the turnout. That is, if now there were billboards in the city that there would be municipal elections, vote for three days, and there was a mass mailing with an invitation to electronic voting, then, on the contrary, there was an idea to hold quiet elections. Only four stands reminded of them in the district, where “Elections” was written, and someone hung their campaign there.

This time “United Russia” took into account the experience and decided to fight in all directions. In paper agitation, they had much greater resources. They had special stickers, they themselves did nothing. Both Zhilischnik and the council worked for them, and they actively disrupted our agitation. The council acted in all social networks, posted all sorts of rubbish about us, and wrote about themselves, what good fellows they are.

Well, the removal of candidates, in which, apparently, the Yakimanka police department was involved, because they drew up protocols. Of course, a blatant court decision with an absolute presumption of Andrey Morev’s guilt. We leave it out of the question that one cannot be judged for a sticker, let alone removed from the elections. But he didn’t even stick anything. ( On July 7, unidentified people stuck a sticker with the Smart Voting symbols on the glass of Andrey Morev’s car, after which Morev was arrested for 15 days for “demonstrating extremist symbols” and soon removed from the elections ). Therefore, the decision of the court is a flagrant lawlessness.

– How many people were excluded from the elections in Yakimanka as a result?

Two. In our district, out of five, three remained. Andrei Morev was removed at the beginning of the campaign, and on the last day Anna Shatunovskaya-Byurno was also removed. She was not a deputy, but she is an activist with experience. Probably, we shared the second place in popularity with her. She also gave a lot of energy to the campaign. They simply found something to remove it for, for some post of a dense prescription.

– When you realized that you won the election, how did you feel?

I am very upset.

I was upset for everyone else that such a result is unfair and unfair. We can say that we were deigned to leave one place.

It is often said that Putin leaves the opposition to say that we have democracy. Now they will say: well, your Yabloko has passed. In fact, with one vote I can do nothing in the council. I have an individual job ahead of me.

Yabloko candidates in Yakimanka, from left to right: Anna Shatunovskaya-Byurno, Irina Kopkina, Vasily Dikarev, Andrey Gordeev, Ekaterina Sedova, Andrey Morev (Photo: social networks of Anna Shatunovskaya-Byurno)

work in the newly elected municipal council of Yakimanka? What are you preparing for?

Unfortunately, I am getting ready for a big persecution from the new council. Of course, I don’t know everyone personally and in detail, but I know two people, and they are very bad people. One of them was caught organizing a “carousel” in the 184th precinct, the media wrote about it, complaints were filed. The same PEC distinguished itself in the elections to the State Duma last year. They then went around 50 homeworkers in two hours, that is, they spent two minutes for each. This time they had a different strategy.

And the second one is such a slippery young man who at one time rubbed his trust in us, tried to be friends with us, and then wrote all sorts of nasty things on social networks to discredit us. Which he continues to do. I know less about the rest, but I don’t expect anything good from them either.

– But you can still help the residents? Or do you need the support of colleagues on the board to do this?

The question is whether the apparatus will remain. Because the support of the deputy is the work of the apparatus, first of all. When we won in 2017, Andrey ( Morev ) did not fire anyone from the old apparatus. On the contrary, he said that he would treat them well if they acted in the interests of the district. There were quite decent people there, and we began normal work. Then we knocked out new positions, the apparatus grew. They took, for example, the person responsible for the overhaul, a former employee of Zhilishchik, who, one might say, came over to us on the bright side. Now he was a controller, he knew everything and worked well. We were able to control the overhaul at a very high level. Then we took two more lawyers and at the end another girl who was engaged in SMM, promotion of our YouTube channel.

In general, we had a powerful apparatus, and the question is which of them will remain, which of them will work with the new advice. If at least some of them remain, it will be much easier for me. Because they prepare any request, any official action goes through them. And not official – it is not necessary to be a deputy here, you can just be a district activist.

Vasily Dikarev and Andrey Morev. Photo: party press service

– Do you think the role of local politics, the politics of the district level, has changed after February 24?

Hard to say.

But many residents look at local deputies as a kind of social service, they want them to deal with their various complaints. They do not give them a political component. But in some ways, this polarized society, when people saw that we were precisely the candidates from Yabloko, that we were not changing parties, we were not going for self-nomination, and that we were pushing this, at the very least, political agenda.

When we first started working on the council, we promoted Yabloko’s “Time to Go Home” campaign, spread the message that Russia should not be involved in the conflict in Syria. Then there was the presidential campaign of Yavlinsky in 2018. In 2019year they collected signatures for the nomination of Andrei Morev to the Moscow City Duma. In 2020, they campaigned against amendments to the Constitution. Then the point of no return was January 2020, when Putin announced that he wanted to change the Constitution. It was a shock. It became obvious that all the talk about whether he would rule further was meaningless: he would be and was ready to go to the end.

– You work at Moscow State University. How is your political activity perceived there?

Yes, I work part time. My business there is not going very well, but that’s not to say that it’s because of politics. Although, of course, she dominates there. We know that the rector of Moscow State University is a member of United Russia. All financial flows go through him, nepotism and blat flourish. I don’t have it, I’ve also been seen in all sorts of opposition cases, so it’s hard for me, of course, there. My colleague Mikhail Lobanov was also subjected to all kinds of persecution. He is an associate professor, and he cannot grow further, on the contrary, they are trying to fire him all the time, including because of his social activity.

Moscow State University, let’s say, this is a model of our state. There is also an irremovable rector for 30 years, who does not want to retire. The same vertical of power. And the opinion of the people for whom the university exists, students, in the first place, and employees, is not taken into account at all. On the contrary, it is officially stated that since the state pays us money, we will do what it says, and not embody the ideas that come from below.

– In general, today you will not envy people in Russia with oppositional views. As well as those of them who were able to win the elections now.

Yes. My goal is to hold out for five years, so that they don’t somehow remove me or bring me to such a state that I myself will be ready to resign my mandate.

– The main thing is not to be imprisoned, like Alexei Gorinov.

Naturally, I will be as careful as possible. But as, again, the case with Morev shows, this does not give any guarantees. Everything can be fabricated, from start to finish.

– In the summer there was a lot of talk about whether it is necessary in such circumstances to participate in elections at all. Now the elections are over. How will you answer this question?

I have always had the opinion that it is necessary to participate in elections in all their forms. Now it is generally the only existing legal form of protest and attempts to do something. And these windows of opportunity are emerging, as we saw in 2017. Yes, they are small, yes, they appear due to an oversight of the authorities. Yes, they can bounce back. But you still have to try, you have to knock on the closed door and wait for the moment when it opens a little.

And then, as a geographer, as a person who is interested in other countries and has been to many places, I know that there are countries where the situation is much worse under formal democracy. The same Belarus we have a narrow-minded example. There, the vast majority of people are already ready to vote against the president, which, unfortunately, we do not yet have. But it still doesn’t help the situation.

And the second is that we have a politically very uneducated population. During the election campaign, we were asked amazing questions. People do not know how deputies differ, they do not know what the State Duma is doing, why the Federation Council is needed. I don’t really know why it’s needed either. People only know that there is a president and there is a mayor Sobyanin, well, governors in the regions. And all the other branches of government, who can be elected, how it works, who reports to whom, they do not know at all. Some sort of parties, statutes, who can nominate whom, how democratic procedures work, what is the turnout threshold, etc.

– That is, the elections also have the function of enlightenment.

Yes, it is very important to develop such skills that campaigning is normal, that it is not cluttering up your mailbox, but information. This is an opportunity for you to choose. Newspapers are thrown at you – read and choose. Learn to choose and be responsible for your choices. It cannot be transferred to others. The same voting of state employees at the behest: “We did not choose United Russia, we just did as we were told.” This is a release from self-responsibility.

These skills will be needed in the “beautiful Russia of the future”, where there will be democracy and where people will vote not according to patterns, but when they will be really involved in public life, at least in their own area.

Interview for Apple | Blozhig Che

As part of the elections to the City Duma of Arkhangelsk, he gave an interview for the propaganda newspaper Yabloko. Let me remind you that I am number two on the list of the party, and the party itself is number 2 on the ballot.

Anton, why did you decide to go to the elections to the Arkhangelsk City Duma?

It’s simple: I love our city. Yes, Arkhangelsk has many problems, but I acknowledge their presence, and do not close my eyes. I want to live in a more comfortable, better city, and this city should be called Arkhangelsk.

The problems of the city are different, both systemic and targeted, but the current government not only does not solve them and throws dust in the eyes of the townspeople, but simply does not see them. That is why, today there are more and more civil activists who are ready not to be silent.

Often, simply by pointing out a problem, pointing out of course more than once or twice, you can force the city administration to solve it.

For example, this is how it became possible to walk along Krasnoflotskaya Street, between Sovetskaya Street and Nikolsky Avenue. Earlier, the sidewalk in the designated place was seized by cars, the traffic police could not fine the drivers for a formal reason. After many appeals to the city administration and the traffic police, the problem was resolved. But it was resolved by a cardinal ban on parking, although I offered a more compromise option – to make the street one-way and give one lane for parking.

And this is another problem of the city government. They do not follow urban trends and approach many issues on a prohibitive basis.

What will you do when you become a deputy?

Realizing that there is no warrior alone in the field, I do not promise that I will move mountains. Let’s leave it to those who for many years, having the majority in the Duma, have been standing next to the mountain.

But, having the status of a deputy, it will be possible to more quickly convey the problems of the city and citizens to the administration, to demand solutions. There will be an opportunity to offer modern approaches. I am ready to become a “mouthpiece” for civil activists and ordinary Arkhangelsk residents.

I also believe that it is necessary to provide comprehensive coverage of what is happening in the City Duma. For example, do you know how your elected representatives vote? There is no such information even on the official website of the Duma. I won’t be surprised that in words the deputies are for the people, but behind the walls of the Duma, not so much, as was the case with deputies who voted for raising tariffs in the city. But this happens at different levels, take the same pension reform, VAT increase and other “popular” decisions.

Why “Apple”?

Today Yabloko is the oldest democratic party in the country. At the same time, perhaps, the only opposition and independent of those registered today. The party is not fixated on the personality of individual figures, constantly changing, with modern views and ready to cooperate with various independent activists.

I am familiar with the program documents of many parties. There is not a single organization with whose ideology I agree one hundred percent, I generally put the achievement of goals above ideologies. But it is Yabloko’s positions that are closest to my worldview.

You said that the authorities do not solve problems, but throw dust in the eyes. Can you give an example?

An excellent illustration is the point improvement of Arkhangelsk. For example, the re-laying of slightly worn-out paving slabs at Chumbarovka, or a new park behind the Rus cinema. Let’s take the last one. There are partially no pedestrian crossings at the nearby intersection of Rosa Luxembourg, Shabalin and 23rd Guards Division streets. Citizens cross the roadway at their own risk. The problem has been around for many years, the city administration is aware of it, but the inquiries are answered with “no money”. But are parks more important than people’s lives?

At the same time, one has to get to places of comfortable rest on “killed” PAZs, or even gazelles, which again “plow” the city center. Go to the point improvement along the broken sidewalks, jumping over puddles.

Unfortunately, improving the quality of everyday life of citizens is not as popular with the city administration as point improvement.

In the city, for example, yards are gradually being improved, and this is part of “everyday life” .

The project “Comfortable urban environment” is certainly a good undertaking. It is frustrating that when developing a project, neither the authorities nor the local residents turn to expert experience. As a result, in all yards we get standard projects “playground + parking”. Even in new yards, with very rare exceptions, there is no place for either youth or adults.

You are talking about modern urban trends. What are they? Why is the current approach of the authorities unsuitable for the city?

Reading books on urban studies and articles about how cities are being improved abroad, you see that our approaches are old and often erroneous.

For example, we are building a bike path right along the embankment sidewalk. In the modern world, this is not acceptable. The space for pedestrians and cyclists should be separated, this will increase comfort, one will not interfere with the other.

The situation is the same with transport. While developed cities are struggling with traffic jams, solving the problem of growing motorization, developing public transport, we are expanding roads and repeating the mistakes of Western cities of the 60s and 70s. But they had finances to correct the mistakes they made, while our economy is not always enough even to “walk the rake”.

An excellent example is the extension of Leningradsky Prospekt. It seems to everyone that more lanes will save you from traffic jams. But in reality, the flow that was previously distributed along the avenue will quickly reach Uritsky Street, where there is a traffic jam now.

But you can make a new lane dedicated to public transport.
