Orange County Celebrates Mexican, Central American Independence This Weekend
More than 40,000 people are expected in this Santa Ana this weekend to celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day, which all of Central America also shares, making it also Independence Day for the nations of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
On Thursday, September 15, a kick-off celebration took place in the historic downtown of Santa Ana in the Plaza Calle Cuatro hosted by the Consulate of Mexico, where hundreds attended, according to Gabriel Juarez Alvarado spokesperson for the consulate.
El Grito was led by Dr. Audrey Rivera Gómez, Head Consul of Mexico in Santa Ana.
“This celebration commemorates one of the most relevant civic events of our story as an independent nation,” said Rivera Gomez over a phone interview.

“Santa Ana is 80 percent Latino and from those 80 percent, the majority are from Mexico. Que Viva Mexico! Si?” said Mayor Sarmiento, who is from Bolivia, to a cheering crowd.
For an hour, the Calle Cuatro Plaza was turned into a place of nostalgia for many immigrants, who cannot celebrate in Mexico.
“There is nostalgia and longing to go back to Mexico from many of the people I speak to, but many can leave but not come back,” said Alvarado, “Mexicanos, I know you are here, working, and sending money to your family, I want you to feel ‘El Grito’ for Mexico because I know you have Mexico in your heart.”

The event was a free community event where many Latino organizations, private and non-profits, and local officials gathered to celebrate Mexican Independence day. Organizations and community members, such as Banda de Guerra Osos de Californa, United Across Borders Foundation and Northgate Market, and others. Many of the participants were recognized by local Congressman Lou Correa, D-Anaheim, who also represents Santa Ana and by the city of Santa Ana for their participation. The mayor of Santa Ana Mayor Sarmiento, OC Board Supervisor Katrina Foley, and Santa Ana Councilwoman Jessie Lopez was in attendance.
The ceremony was filled with traditional songs and dances of Mexico in traditional clothing.
Not too far from the plaza, another Independence Day commemoration took over Santa Ana’s skyline.
The city’s downtown iconic water tower was lit up by city officials in blue to celebrate the Central American countries that also celebrate their independence on September 15.
The tower which in past years has been of Mexican flag colors was blue.
“Last night, we illuminated the water tower blue and white in honor of the five Central American countries who celebrate their Independence Day today, September 15. Our City is proud to share such a diverse, Hispanic culture. The tower will be illuminated through tonight. ¡Que vivan El Salvador , Guatemala , Honduras , Nicaragua , y Costa Rica !” read the post from the City of Santa Ana’s official Facebook.

The gesture was put in place to celebrate all Latino immigrant families that call Santa Ana home, as suggested by Councilmember Jessie Lopez.
“It’s notable that the request to light it came from Councilmember Jessie Lopez, who is Salvadoran-American. It’s important to highlight that Santa Ana is home to immigrant families from Central America and other parts of Latin America, not just Mexico,” said Paul Eakins, spokesperson for Santa Ana, over email.
“You know, I think personally, for me, it’s like a feel-good moment to see all of the Salvadorians in the city of Santa Ana have, you know, a moment in time to see their home, their homeland color reflected, on the water tower, because there’s a population of us here that I think has not been necessarily acknowledged, or in the past celebrated,” said Lopez.
Lopez says this is the first time the water tower has been blue during this time, normally it is the color of the Mexican flag.
Voice of OC reached out to the city of Santa Ana asking if this was the first time the water tower was lit up blue. “I don’t recall doing it in the almost 3 years I’ve been with the City,” said Eakins.
“I brought it up to staff, it was part of an educational process as well for everyone to let them know, part of, you know, Hispanic or Latino, next, whatever you want to call it Heritage Month, is about, you know, Latin America, in general, it from Chile to Mexico to Central America, that celebrates their independence from Spain.”
This weekend, Santa Ana is expecting 40,000 people to visit Fiestas Patrias. The annual celebration normally hosts a parade, but for the past 2 years it has been scaled down due to the pandemic, however this year it will not be held due to the ongoing construction in the area.
The Fiestas Patrias layout for the 17 and 18 in downtown Santa Ana and set times can be found here.
“Due to the ongoing construction in the downtown area and on Main Street (where the parade normally takes place), additional street closures would have been needed to have the parade this year. We did not want to further impact local businesses and neighborhoods that are already affected by the construction closures. We’re hopeful that we can bring the parade back next year,” said Eakins.
Despite street closure, and earlier pandemic-related restrictions the celebrations continue.
“The central message here is we wanted to bring a piece of Mexico here so they don’t forget their roots, it is to bring a memory of Mexico, its independence, and not forget to be proud of their country,” says Alvarado.
Here is how Mexico’s Consul General began the celebrations this week in Santa Ana.

Santa Ana Nov. 8, 2022 General Election Voter Guide – New Santa Ana
The General Election is coming up quickly, on Nov. 8, 2022. Here in Santa Ana we will be voting for a new Mayor, several City Council Members, a School Board Member and a couple of ballot measures as well as a new Orange County Supervisor.
The Orange County Supervisor Election (District Two)
Our current Mayor, Vicente Sarmiento (whose actual name, per the State Bar, is Vincent Flavio) opted not to run again for Mayor, after one term. Instead he is running for Orange County Supervisor. The main reason for this is likely the paycheck as our Mayor and City Council Members have part-time positions. They make a monthly stipend and then get extra money for serving on various boards and commissions. However Sarmiento still has to work as a part-time cannabis and bankruptcy lawyer. We suspect he would much rather pull down a six figure salary, with benefits, as a County Supervisor.
We cannot however, in good faith, support Sarmiento. We dislike that he has called police officers murderers. We are not pleased that his own sister (and her hubbie) are suing the Cities of Anaheim and Santa Ana on behalf of a criminal who led police on a dangerous multi-city pursuit, in a car he stole from his own girlfriend – then engaged in a hours-long standoff before jumping out of the car holding something that made it look like he was armed. So of course he was shot by the police and now Sarmiento’s own family is trying to leach millions of dollars from local taxpayers – on behalf of a dead criminal.
We also are not thrilled by Sarmiento’s ongoing leftward tilt – he fashions himself to be a Bolivian Bernie Sanders. And we mightily dislike that his family made their fortune running seedy bars in Santa Ana. Moreover crime, homelessness and drug use have all escalated during Sarmiento’s brief mayoral tenure. he has failed in every regard!
Fortunately we have a choice in this year’s O.C. Supervisor election as Garden Grove City Councilwoman Kim Bernice Nguyen is running as well. She, like Sarmiento, is a Democrat and she is fairly progressive. the difference is that she does not hate the police. That is why our popular Orange County Sheriff, Don Barnes, endorsed her this week. And that is part of the reason we too are endorsing her. Nguyen also has a plan to deal with homelessness.
We also like that she is both Vietnamese and Mexican – representing two of the major demographics in Santa Ana. If she wins can we finally have a Spring Roll and Tamale Festival in Downtown Santa Ana? That would blow the Orange Street Fair away!
It should be noted that a majority of the Santa Ana City Council Members has endorsed Nguyen including Council Members Phil Bacerra, David Penaloza, Thai Viet Phan and Nelida Mendoza.
The Santa Ana Mayoral Election
There are four candidates running to replace Sarmiento as Mayor of Santa Ana. The top two candidates are Valerie Amezcua, a SAUSD Trustee who retired from the O.C. Probation Department and Sal Tinajero, a former Santa Ana City Councilman who is now a Rancho Santiago Community College District Trustee. The other two candidates are Jesse Nestor, a young Libertarian with no political experience and Jose Solorio, a former Santa Ana City Councilman who also once served in the California State Assembly.
Tinajero is part of the same political coalition that Sarmiento hails from, which includes Santa Ana’s top police-hater, Councilman Johnathan Hernandez. Tinajero’s website states that his priorities include: “Redirect funds towards health and youth agencies.” That is code for “defund the police!” He also supports the creation of a police oversight committee, which will no doubt be populated by anti-police activists like Hernandez and will consistently act to neuter our police.
Amezcua says on her website that she will: “implement new ideas to reduce homelessness and build housing, I’ll work with first responders to make neighborhoods safer, and I’ll build stronger partnerships with our schools and youth programs.
Note that Amezcua says she will work with law enforcement while Tinajero is making it clear he sees law enforcement as the enemy! For that reason we have endorsed Amezcua for Mayor. She has our full support.
Solorio came in fourth place when he ran for Mayor two years ago, in a crowded field. He was once a star in the Democratic Party but today he is clinging to his past and his current campaign does not seem to be getting a lot of support. He is a good guy but he has apparently lost his cachet and we are not sure how he can get his mojo back. Perhaps he will split the male vote, which can only help Amezcua.
The Santa Ana City Council Election
Santa Ana’s City Council Elections are now ward-specific and three seats are up for grabs – Wards 2, 4 and 6.
We are supporting the incumbents in each of these Wards – Nelida Mendoza in Ward 2; Phil Bacerra in Ward 4 and David Penaloza in Ward 6.
Each of these incumbents has been challenged by an anti-law enforcement candidate in the mold of Councilman Hernandez: Benjamin Vazquez in Ward 2; Amalia Mejia in Ward 4 and Manny Escamilla in Ward 6.
If you would like to see the SAPD defunded then by all means vote for Vazquez, Mejia and Escamilla.
The SAUSD Election – Area 4
The SAUSD also now has ward-specific elections. Three candidates are running for Area 4 including Andrew Linares, an attorney and parent; Sylvia Iglesias (sister of controversial firebrand former Trustee Ceci Iglesias) and Katelyn Brazer Aceves (an unknown who is part of the anti-law enforcement coalition typified by Councilman Hernandez).
We are supporting Linares for this seat. He also has the support of SAUSD Trustees John Palacio and Valerie Amezcua. Iglesias is fine too but Linares has been very involved in the community for several years and we believe he will be a voice of moderation on a school board that has tilted too far to the left over the past few years.
68th State Assembly District Election
The 68th State Assembly District includes most of Santa Ana. Voters will have two choices – Santa Ana businessman and resident Mike Tardif or Anaheim City Councilman Avelino Valencia. The seat has been vacated by the incumbent, Tom Daly, who opted not to run again after the FBI started digging into the political corruption in Anaheim.
The corruption under investigation in Anaheim stems from the deal that former Anaheim Mayor Harry Sidhu, a Valencia ally, made with the Angels to develop their property. The deal was struck down in the courts and in the aftermath Sidhu was forced out of office. It turns out that the special interests who funded Sidhu for years have also been backing Daly and now Valencia. The entire Anaheim political cabal is crooked. Given that corruption we don’t see any good reason to vote for Valencia. Tardif has our endorsement.
We also like that Tardif is opposed to any new taxes and he backs suspending the onerous California gas tax.
Ballot Measure W: Business Tax Equity and Flexible Tax Holiday
The argument in favor of this measure was written by Santa Ana City Council Members David Penaloza and Phil Bacerra. The measure will make the city business tax more favorable for small businesses and will also make it easier for new home businesses to get a business license. This sounds like sensible reform so we encourage you to vote Yes on Measure W.
For the record no one filed an argument against Measure W.
Ballot Measure X: Voter Ballot Measure to Amend the Santa Ana City Charter
This ballot measure will amend the City Charter by imposing a lifetime ban for the Mayor after completion of four terms and a lifetime ban for Councilmembers after completion of three terms, requiring approval of two-thirds of the City Council to adopt a budget, expanding the application of the Code of Ethics, utilizing gender neutral language throughout the Charter, changing references to the “Clerk of Council” to “City Clerk” and making other minor clean-up updates.
The argument in favor of this ballot measure was written by Santa Ana City Councilmember Nelida Mendoza. No one filed an argument against it.
We don’t see any reason to oppose this measure. We encourage a yes vote on Measure X.
The 46th Congressional District
The incumbent, Lou Correa, has been serving Orange County for many years in various capacities including a stint as an O.C. Supervisor. He is opposed by Republican Christopher J. Gonzales, an attorney.
Gonzalez’ endorsements include the California ProLife Council – which is pretty tone-deaf considering the national backlash to the U.S. Supreme Court decision to scuttle Roe vs. Wade.
We have always supported Correa and will continue to do so. The last time we spoke to him, a couple weeks ago, he noted that he is working hard to increase funding for law enforcement. That is certainly appreciated since crime remains out of control in California.
Please be sure to vote. This is an important election. If we are not careful we will end up with a City Council and Mayor that will defund our police. We simply cannot afford that outcome!

We’ve been long-time fans of El Mercado! Their food is fresh delish – we love the brunch pancakes, empanadas, tlayuda, ahogados. Everything is flavorful. We’ve had happy hour, brunch and dinner and nothing disappoints! Their adherence to ever-changing COVID guidelines was always spectacular.

Very cool modern Mexican restaurant in downtown town Santa Ana. I came to use the free guacamole & chips deal that popped up on FB. It also pops up on their website too. It’s a good size bowl of guac with pumpkin seeds, diced tomatoes, and sliced radish on top, along with an even bigger bowl of chips.

El Mercado is impressive on many different levels. I love when restaurants care about the small details in the food, cocktails, the decor, and hospitality. Jessica behind the bar took good care of us. She makes great cocktails, shes funny and nice. We spoke to Jose about the cocktails program and the restaurant and to the chef about food and decor.

A dinner at El Mercado is an unforgettable experience. It’s a beautiful restaurant operated by wonderful people. The food is fantastic and you’ll be thinking about it long after the meal is over even you’ve already planned your text visit before you’ve even received the bill.

I love coming to this place, it’s right the heart of Santa Ana. Love the outside patio with music playing lightly. I order the buttermilk pancakes with a Mexican coke . Bomb pancakes, the are huge and fluffy with a nice sweetness. Must come back and try more of their menu. Nice job Mercado modern.

CLIMATE DATA
Climate information is the result of averaging data on meteorological parameters for the specified time periods. The maximum daytime and minimum nighttime temperatures are the result of averaging all days within a given month. The data of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) (period 1961-1990), which are the result of observations at meteorological stations, are used for about 3000 of the largest settlements. For all stations from our database (for periods 1961-1990 and 1981-2010 and their comparisons), either data from the University of East Anglia (Climatic Research Unit, CRU) (for mainland settlements) or reanalysis data from the US National Center for Forecasts (NCEP/NCAR) (for island settlements and stations in Antarctica) were used. Official WMO data and data calculated by CRU (or NCEP/NCAR) may differ. The data is for informational purposes only and may not be used for commercial or scientific purposes.

Santa Ana, El Salvador – recreation, weather, tourist reviews, photos
The city of Santa Ana was founded long before the arrival of the Spanish colonists here. The lands in these places are very fertile, and the nature is incredibly beautiful. Most likely, that is why, despite the proximity of volcanoes, the local Indians chose this place and built a settlement here called Sihuatehuacan (Place of the priestesses). When the Spaniards came, Sihuatehuacan was given a new name in honor of St. Anne – Santa Ana . This small settlement received the official title of the city only in 1812. After that, it grew and developed very quickly, and in 1894 became the cradle of the revolution against the Salvadoran dictator Ezeta.
The main source of wealth for Santa Ana and its residents are the coffee plantations located around. Therefore, wealthy planters built themselves here not only luxurious houses and villas, but also churches, restaurants, cinemas and shops. Santa Ana attracts tourists with its amazing nature, pleasant climate and the famous national park Sero Verde , which is the pride of the whole country.

Climate and weather
Santa Ana lies in the temperate tropical climate zone. The whole year can be divided into two distinct seasons: rainy (May-October) and dry (November-April). During the rainy season, about 75% of all annual precipitation falls here, and the dry season is characterized by pleasant and comfortable weather.
In general, Santa Ana is slightly cooler than the capital. In summer, the average air temperature is +20…+22 °С , and in winter it drops to +14. ..+16 °С . The most favorable time to visit Santa Ana is the period from mid-November to April.
Nature
Santa Ana lies in the west of the country, in a picturesque valley Chiautehuacan . The city is surrounded by three volcanoes: Santa Ana , Sero Verde and Izalco . In the crater of the extinct volcano Cerro Verde is the National Park of the same name, which is famous for its rich flora and fauna. There is also a crater lake Lago de Coatepec with hot springs. Izalco, which is surrounded by rich green forests, is also an extinct volcano. Santa Ana Volcano (or Llamatepeque) is the country’s highest active volcanic peak. Its mouth is filled with a small lake of sulphurous water, from which three young craters protrude.
The main natural attraction of the city is Lake Coatepec , on the banks of which the richest quarters are located.
Attractions
The main man-made attractions of Santa Ana are located on the central square of the city. These include the majestic Cathedral Catedral Santa Ana , the Santa Ana Theater Building and the City Hall building. The courtyard of the municipality is a real botanical garden with many flowering tropical plants, in the middle of which there is a fountain with a statue of Manneken Pis.
The streets of the city are also interesting, along which dozens of old buildings stretch, most of which are in good condition. Also in Santa Ana there is more than one quarter that can surprise tourists with its luxury. Their houses, shops and churches were built by the local wealthy planters.
The main natural attractions of the city are without a doubt the three volcanoes that surround the city ( Santa Ana, Sero Verde and Izalco ). In the crater of an extinct volcano Cerro Verde is the famous national park of the same name, and Santa Ana is the country’s highest active volcano. Also, the pride of local residents is the picturesque lake Coatepec .
Well, after visiting Santa Ana, you need to go to the nearby town of Chalchuapa . Next to it are the ruins of the city of Tasumal, which was built by the ancient Maya. Translated from the language of the local Indians, its name means “the place of burning of the victims” . There are other ruins of Mayan cities in the neighborhood, but it is Tasumal that is the pride of all Salvadorans.
Catering
Most of the restaurants in Santa Anna serve national cuisine based on Spanish and Indian traditions. Before the main meal, they often offer to try all kinds of snacks under the general name bokas (seafood, various types of sausages and salted vegetables). Then you can move on to more hearty dishes – a casamiento rice and bean mixture or, for example, fried chicken polo dorado. Also, in any local restaurant, they serve arroz fried rice, sopa de frijoles bean soup, tamale meat in corn dough, and carne asada beef fried. A variety of seafood dishes are also popular here, for example, ceviche marinated fish and ariscada (fish and seafood stewed in a creamy sauce). Well, the most daring gourmets can try such exotic dishes as iguana roast or fried armadillo.

Tourists in Santa Ana have access to hotels of any level and price category, so here you can always find the most suitable accommodation option. The most popular hotel in the city is Tolteka Plaza Hotel Santa Ana 4* . There are also numerous 3* hotels and small family hotels that are similar to European hotels like B&B . The cost of accommodation in most of these establishments is very affordable, and the level of service and accommodation is very decent. Those who want to save money on housing are recommended to stay in one of the city hostels (from $ 8 per night).
Entertainment and Leisure
Santa Ana is a densely populated city, which is chosen by the richest people in the country. It is thanks to them that numerous shops, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, cinemas and other entertainment venues have been built here. They are mainly located in the central area and fashionable quarters. Also in the city there are a large number of parks and picturesque corners. However, the most interesting place in Santa Ana is the Sero Verde National Park, which is recognized as the best reserve in the whole country. It is located in the crater of the extinct volcano of the same name. Now the park is well equipped both for relaxation and for viewing nearby attractions and majestic volcanic peaks, which you can even climb. There are also camping sites in the park, and entertaining excursions are organized for tourist groups. By the way, if we talk about excursions, trips to coffee plantations are very popular in Santa Ana, where you can see the process of collecting coffee fruits.
Of course, the inhabitants of Santa Ana, like all Salvadorans, love and know how to have fun, so local holidays and festivals are famous throughout the country. The biggest holiday periods are during the festival El Salvador del Mundo , Semana Santa (the week-long festival before Easter), and the celebration of Christmas, which lasts until mid-January. Santa Ana also has its own interesting holidays, among which the most famous is the festival Nuestra Señora de Santa Ana , taking place in July.
Shopping
Santa Ana has both large shops and traditional street markets where you can not only buy any purchases and souvenirs, but also get acquainted with the culture and life of the townspeople. In shops and shopping centers, prices are higher than in the markets, however, in some of them you can bargain. Most Santa Ana stores are open from 08:00 to 18:00. The lunch break (siesta) lasts from 12:00 to 14:00, the day off is Sunday. Many supermarkets and grocery stores are open all week until 21:00.
If we talk about city markets, then you can’t do without bargaining. The thing is that as soon as merchants see a foreigner in front of them, they immediately overestimate the price of the goods. And often the whole trading row does this at once. There are no price tags on the markets, and the cost of goods is discussed in words, so if you haggle a little, you can easily get a very significant discount.
In the markets, it is recommended to pay attention to the original products of local craftsmen (pottery with Mayan symbols, products made from straw and tortoise shell, etc.). But coffee, tobacco, jewelry and textiles are better to buy in stores.
Transport
El Salvador has an excellent internal bus service, so you can get to Santa Ana from any city or airport. Moreover, modern buses run between the capital of the country and Santa Ana, which are equipped with comfortable seats and air conditioning. However, it is worth considering that travel in them is twice as expensive as in ordinary buses.
Santa Ana’s urban public transport functions are operated by old American buses and new Brazilian models. The cost of one trip within the city is about $0.3. Also, small fixed-route taxis run in the central regions, and pickup trucks with wooden benches in the backsides run in the suburbs.
There are also taxis in Sata-Ana, travel within the city is quite cheap – $4-6. At night, rates increase by 50%.
Communications
International call boxes (to Canada and USA only) are installed in all public places in the city. For negotiations with other countries, it is most convenient to use the services of Telecom call centers. Also in the city there are automatic machines of Telefonica and Telecom companies, which work from telephone cards. You can also call abroad from them, but the cost of such a call will be 10-15% more expensive than from a call center.
The cellular communication system is developing rapidly, so there are now four mobile operators (GSM 850, 900 and 1900) operating here. Roaming is available to all subscribers of major Russian operators.
The most profitable way to access the Internet is to visit one of the numerous Internet cafes ($1.5–2 per hour). Moreover, some Internet cafes offer international calls on the VoIP system.
Security
Despite the fact that in general the criminal situation in Santa Ana is calmer than in the capital, it is not safe here at night. At night, robbers often hunt on the streets of the city, and most of the inhabitants carry weapons with them. A rather specific type of crime also flourishes here – robbery of buses.
Therefore, for your own safety, it is in no case recommended to demonstrate jewelry, watches, large sums of money, expensive photo and video equipment. After dark, we advise you to travel only by taxi. You should also always take precautions against pickpockets, especially in transport.
Business climate
Santa Ana is the country’s largest city (second largest) and its economy is based on the production and trade of coffee, cotton and sugar. The most developed industries are food, textile, cotton, tobacco and woodworking.
The city and departmental government encourages any investment in the development of the city’s industry, so this area has very attractive tax conditions.
Real estate
In Santa Ana, as well as in the capital of the country, along with rich neighborhoods, there are very poor and unpresentable areas for the poor. It is this factor that forms the level of demand and the cost of local real estate. In general, housing here is cheaper than in the capital, but the number of expensive villas and mansions is almost the same. On average, in the rich areas of Santa Ana, the cost of housing starts from $65,000 and can reach $1,000,000 (large villa).
