In the US, some declining Reform and Conservative synagogues are turning Orthodox to stay afloat – Lechaim
Although Mitchell Friedman was initially reluctant, he realized that the best chance to save the synagogue, which he had always considered “liberal conservative”, is to turn it into Chabad, writes The Times of Israel journalist Katherine J. Prince. nine0005
For 88 years, Howard Beach Judaism Center has occupied a sand-colored brick building on a quiet residential street in Queens, just four miles (6.5 km) from John F. Kennedy International Airport. As time went on, membership dwindled, and board members like Friedman began to wonder how long the synagogue could stay open. Meanwhile, a few blocks away, Rabbi Avrohom Richter and his wife Zeldi were looking for a place. They opened Beit Chabad in their house back in 2003, and if they once struggled to get a minyan, now they struggled to accommodate everyone inside during worship. Richter does not remember with whom the initial contact was made, but after several meetings with the board, it was decided that the once-conservative synagogue would become orthodox. nine0005
The history of the Howard Beach synagogue is not unique. As the membership of Reform and Conservative synagogues across the country dwindles, some synagogue councils are reaching out to Orthodox communities, primarily those affiliated with the Chabad movement. Over a third of Conservative synagogues and one in five Reform synagogues have closed in the past 20 years, according to a 2020 Pew Research Center study. Also, while nearly 25% of American Jews consider being Jewish important, only one in five Jews attends synagogue every month. Among the many reasons for this are membership fees, which can range from $1,500 to $5,000 a year, and the various ways people now choose to express their Jewish identity. nine0005
According to the same study, 38% of American Jews participated in Chabad programs in one way or another. “There are all these denominations, but the bottom line is that we are all brothers and sisters. And we are all children of the same G-d, the same Almighty,” said Zeldi Richter. “We are all Jews. The Almighty accepts everyone. We must be welcoming and inclusive of all sectors of society. We are all connected on a deeper level.” However productive the early meetings between the Howard Beach Jewish Center and Richter were, there were some skeptics at first. “We came from two very different points of view, and there were people who were fundamentally against things like mechica,” Richter said, referring to the section that separates men and women in almost all Orthodox synagogues. “Some people didn’t know much about the Chabad movement or what it means to be Orthodox,” he said. “It was something they could read about or see in a movie and think, ‘Oh, these are scary people.’ Then, once they get to know you, they will see that we are not much different. We are simply following the original principles of Halacha (Jewish law).” In fact, Friedman, who is now one of the most vocal supporters of the synagogue handover, was initially outraged when he learned of the proposal. nine0005
Raised in a non-observant family, Friedman stopped attending services after a bar mitzvah at the age of 13. It wasn’t until his own son was ready to go to a Jewish school that he and his family joined the then “Jewish Center of Howard Beach.” He was drawn to the synagogue precisely because it was not orthodox. “I was among those who opposed the partnership,” Friedman said. “The reason for my opposition was that I was comfortable in the synagogue, where there was no separation between men and women. Whatever the case, I decided to give it a try and found that, aside from division, little had changed in worship. I have since come to the conclusion that the partnership was the right one and I continue to work with Chabad Howard Beach. nine0005
According to Richter, since the partnership began, the number of people coming to the synagogue has gradually increased. According to him, from 35 to 40 people come to Shabbat services every week, and at least 100 people on holidays. A recent Shavuot celebration with ice cream, cheesecake and pancakes drew about 100 people. And most importantly, there is always a minyan. Rabbi Yosef Lipsker of Reading, Pennsylvania, has a similar experience.
Lipsker and his wife Hana first came to the city about 25 years ago to find a Jewish community of about 800 Jews. He was hired as the rabbi of the city’s only Orthodox synagogue, Shomrei a-Brit. But by 2008 it had lost too many members to support itself financially. The founders, many of whom were Holocaust survivors, considered selling the building. Lipsker offered to buy the synagogue. Working alongside the board and parishioners, he was able to lease the building with an option to buy in 2010. The rabbi, who lived in Stamford, Connecticut and London, made it his mission to make Chabad a welcoming place before moving to Reading. “What is happening is that we look behind the mask and see what the needs of the community are,” Lipsker said. nine0005
In addition to organizing weekly Shabbat dinners, Torah lessons and other programs, Lipsker also works with recovering addicts at the Karon Treatment Center, a non-profit rehabilitation center for people struggling with substance abuse. “Rabbi Lipsker and his wife did a wonderful job of getting people to the events,” said Jonathan Simon, who worked at the synagogue before it became Chabad, adding that it was around 9 a. m. to celebrate Shavuot.0 people. Back in Queens, Rabbi Eli Shifrin of Chabad Little Neck told The Times of Israel over the phone that his experience echoed that of Chabad Howard Beach. He was on his way to check on the progress of much-needed repairs to the synagogue. Until they are completed in 2023, the congregation gathers in a space provided by the nearby Har Torah yeshiva.
When Shifrin and his wife Rivka first arrived in Little Neck in 2005, they held services at their home. As the number of participants grew, the number of parishioners in the synagogue decreased. “One day, on the holiday of Simchat Torah, a former cantor of the synagogue came to us and saw that this place was overcrowded. Meanwhile, they have tried their best to keep their doors open, but to no avail,” Shifrin said. “It was a body without a soul. The Board realized that the only way to survive was to become Orthodox.” nine0005
Many of the founders of the synagogue were survivors of the Holocaust. Although they became less observant, Shifrin said they were familiar with orthodox customs.
