Hollywood acting schools: will they make you a movie star

If you are planning to become a Hollywood actor and have already bought a ticket to Los Angeles, congratulations – you are a very presumptuous person. Especially for people like you, film and TV producer Alina Trigubenko studied Hollywood from the inside and found out which American schools teach acting and whether it is worth spending your hard-earned savings on them

Los Angeles is an ideal garden for cultivating and properly caring for acting talent. In the city, like mushrooms, new schools, workshops, studios, universities are growing and opening. This is facilitated by the ideal climate, the geographical location for filming and the patron Venus – the planet of beauty, creativity, harmony, vanity and artistry. nine0003

I clearly realized that I want to give the germ of my acting talent into the loving, caring hands of a master who will not make me an ikebana, but carefully, directing me to the source of the creative channel, will let grow what has already decided to ascend.

I spent a month and a half of my life walking around Los Angeles in search of interesting schools and studying the atmosphere, coaching methods and their possibilities. Below are 10 of the most intelligent and useful educational institutions that I was able to find. nine0003

Ivana Chubbuck’s school

Ivana Chubbuck’s school is very popular all over the world and has been especially popular in Russia and Europe in recent years. The school has three levels of education: beginners need to go through a certain number of classes, months or years with different teachers of the introductory class, then (or immediately, if they have some experience in the profession) go to the advanced class. Only after that, and also if Ivana chooses exactly your resume from hundreds or you pay for her private course, you get to her personally. nine0003

True, all Ivana’s classes are overcrowded and no one guarantees that you will be able to receive the master’s treasured comments about your game every week. But there is a plus here too: being an observer, seeing the work of a teacher with others is also quite useful. A feature of Ivana’s technique was the priority of intellectual work over the work of the body, besides, the principle of her acting is based on the use of sexual energy. All teachers of the school teach students on the author’s Chubbuck technique, beautifully presented in the book “The Mastery of the Actor”. nine0003

The probability of getting to Ivana herself is not so high, but there is. Everyone decides for himself whether it is worth studying with a little-known teacher under the guise of her brand, which, by the way, was glorified by Chubbuck’s star students – Beyoncé, Charlize Theron, Jessica Biel and others. In this school, as in some others, there is a great opportunity to meet casting directors, agents and producers.

Margie Haber Studios

This is a studio named after famous coach Margie Haber. Before you get to classes with Margie, here, too, you first need to unlearn some time from other teachers. If you have already filmed enough, then the chances increase.

The peculiarity of this school is that all lessons are recorded on camera. Learning experience: The recording mercilessly exposes mistakes, nervousness, and shortcomings. They say that Halle Berry was very pleased with Margie’s system called “Three Pis”, which, according to promises, removes: Panic (panic), Pain (pain), Performance anxiety (fear of failure) and brings “big Pi” to the role – Power ( force). Brad Pitt, Vince Vaughn, Kristin Davis, Molly Sims and others also took lessons from Margie, but, however, they did not leave any feedback. nine0003

Larry Moss School

One of the most famous acting teachers in all of America is Larry Moss. He admits that he hates the actors of Los Angeles for the posturing, superficiality and lack of diligence with which their New York counterparts work.

Larry perceives each student first of all as a person, and then as an actor. As if under a magnifying glass, he examines his inner world, compassionately sends everyone to a psychotherapist, and prescribes a doctor without fail several times a week. Larry does not tolerate lazy people and hacks – he will smash to smithereens, but, however, with love, in a fatherly way. All his students are required to work with their voice and body, master the Alexander technique (a Western alternative to the Stanislavsky method) and stage speech skills, be very educated and smart. That is why the actors in his classes are of a completely different level than in most other workshops. nine0003

There are only four times a year to see Larry – twice in New York and two in Los Angeles. But you can always come to an audition, that is, watch the work of the master and at the same time enjoy the work of professionals, well-known and not so famous actors. Of course, it is not a fact that you will see Leonardo DiCaprio, Hilary Swank and Helen Hunt there, whom Larry prepared for their star roles, but what if you are lucky? Judging by the list of awards of his students, Larry brings good luck.

A school called Larry Moss Studio has nothing to do with Larry Moss. It belongs to Michelle Danner, Larry’s former business partner, with whom he once stopped working, but could not change the name of the school or take the brand with him. nine0003

Sharon Chatten Studio

This is a woman with character, who is mainly engaged in already established actors and celebrities like Vanessa Williams, Will Smith, Jim Carrey or Cameron Diaz. Sharon takes far from everyone and makes strict requirements for candidates. Her approach to learning is both physical and intellectual. The actor must study every nuance of the work, understand every shade of meaning and, more importantly, cleanse his body and speech of clamps and other husks that interfere with free play. Sharon really reveals many students, but for most, she often seems too tyrannical and critical. nine0003

Anthony Meindl Actor Workshop

The philosophy of Anthony Meindl Actor Workshop, which differs from other schools, is very close to our Russian life, the search for meaning in Russian life Anthony Meindl puts a lot of emphasis on the spiritual aspect of acting. In Los Angeles, spirituality and esotericism are now in vogue – every fifth guru and enlightened one. The statistics also include teachers. nine0003

At this school, you learn acting and at the same time undergo personal growth training. As students say, Anthony looks into the hidden corners of your soul, changes your life, helps you discover self-love and develop self-esteem. Carmen Electra, for example, believes that it was Meindl who gave her total self-confidence and emancipation, and hence the admiration of the audience.

Ruskin School & Theater

John Ruskin is a student of the famous Sanford Meisner (American actor and teacher) and a bearer of his technique. In Hollywood they like to refer to acquaintance with Meisner and call him their teacher, but more often than not this turns out to be pure bluff. John in this sense is a pleasant exception. In his office, in a conspicuous place, he keeps indisputable evidence – a photograph with the master.

Ruskin School & Theater has day and evening groups for beginners and pros. People with no experience, already accomplished actors or just those who need to reveal themselves, go through entry-level classes. Classes are more like psychotherapy sessions: in a soft, trusting atmosphere, everyone pulls out of their consciousness what prevents them from finding harmony with themselves and opening up to meet peace and success. Lessons are held twice a week. First, students work on their personality and learn to feel the mood and state of their partner, and a month later they are taken to acting skills themselves. On weekends, for especially advanced, that is, already acting actors, well-known industry people — Anthony Hopkins, for example, teach. The principle is the same as in other studios: a scene and analysis for 20-30 minutes. nine0003

This school has three advantages. Firstly, it gives you the opportunity to consider yourself and your talent from different angles. Secondly, it gives a luxurious chance to make friends with professionals and be noticed. Thirdly, if you show yourself well, you may be offered to become a theater actor at school. From the point of view of connections and prospects, it was a wonderful experience.

John Ruskin himself is an interesting, involved person, he passes every lesson through himself and creates an atmosphere of joy, calmness and confidence. All of his students usually become friends. nine0003

Berg Studios

A low-profile school, a pure gem in an ocean of heavily promoted studios making aggressive money.

In this studio, unlike most others, what is more important than name, fame and money is real art, education, transfer of knowledge and skills, comprehension of the inexpressible, magic. All three teachers of the school are very professional, interested in the progress and success of each student; they complement each other perfectly, each has a very deep approach and a unique method of relaxation, self-knowledge and the higher meaning of the art of acting. In addition to acting skills, there are many nice bonuses: script analysis classes with insight into history, culture, spirit of the times, seminars by invited industry professionals and much more. Here are good opportunities for establishing useful connections: Berg’s actors star in top films (House, Spider-Man, Hancock, Star Wars, Changeling). nine0003

Gregory Berg, founder of the studio, in my opinion, a real genius. He inexplicably subtly feels what and how to tell his student, instantly finds the necessary leverage in order to turn off the falsehood and make you live the life of a hero. Simple words, simple advice – but in this simplicity lies the whole point.

//www.bergstudios.com/

Eric Morris School

Famous Hollywood teacher and author of amazing books. Morris has a small school with a special atmosphere. Touching, charming, kind, he is also focused on art, not making money, radiates love with confidence and shows high professionalism. He teaches exclusively by himself – in his studio it is easy to open up and get out of the shell that hinders true mastery. Its own, very interesting technique based on physicality and feeling. nine0003

Los Angeles acting schools are a very profitable industry. In addition to really talented teachers, there are many who have achieved little so far and starred in films three times at most. Eric has very impressive numbers: he has been teaching for more than 53 years, starred in 25 films, 85 shows, 50 plays. Unlike many other coaches, he will not fill a hole of incompetence by mentioning the big names of actors, supposedly his students. By the way, the foreword to his book No Acting Please was written by Jack Nicholson. nine0003

http://ericmorris.com/

Howard Fine Acting Studio

Howard Fine, the school’s founder, was named Best Acting Instructor in Los Angeles by Backstage Magazine’s 2006 West. In his studio, mostly professional actors improve their skills. All classes are built around the personality of Howard himself, on his very subjective taste. A very specific technique that is not suitable for everyone. But if you agree in interests, the studio will offer you quality classes in vocals, speech, improvisation and Alexander’s technique. Acknowledgments to Howard are written by famous directors and actors, such as Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”, “The Mask of Zorro”), Chris Pine (“Star Wars”) and Victoria Burrows (“The Hobbit”).0003

//www.howardfine.com/

Lisa Robertson Studio

There is a very gentle, feminine, respectful, careful approach to students. Lisa helps each bud to open in its own time, in its own mode and style. Unlike many other schools, there is no imposition of certain techniques and special tools. The main thing is to reveal your vision, feeling. After classes, Lisa does not want to leave the studio. She has worked with many actors from the Twilight saga, as well as from the now popular TV series The Walking Dead and The Riches in America. nine0003

//www.lisarobertsonstudio.com/

There are a lot of temptations in Los Angeles, but if you have a clear goal and an understanding of the path, then all these beautiful pretentious parties with and without celebrities will not let you turn aside and lead away from understanding the paramount importance of work, work, diligent, daily, even in a sense fearless. Studying yourself is the most unexpected, exciting and risky journey. You never know where and with whom you will get out. Good luck!

P.S. If you are Russian, you will need additional work on the accent, which is also a lot, even a huge amount of work. From my own experience, I can say that I have been fixing my “From Russia Visa Love” for six months, every day, for several hours, and only in this way I have made great progress, including a pleasantly lowered voice. In English, the professionals you need are called accent reduction coach and dialect coach. In addition, Russians, according to American teachers, are distinguished by tightness in the body. They believe that we do not feel the space and ourselves in it. This will also have to be fought. nine0003

On the way to Hollywood: TOP 3 acting schools in the USA

The popularity and development of the film industry in the United States does not need additional advertising: the Hollywood hills attract ambitious connoisseurs of beauty from all over the world, promising the prospect of a stellar career. Studying at acting schools in the USA is a great chance for talented and motivated students to get an excellent education in the field of acting, directing and related specialties. America has a lot to offer and potential students to choose from.
nine0003

How future actors are trained in America

  • acting schools in the US offer full-time educational programs;
  • master classes and entire courses dedicated to the successful mastering of the Stanislavsky system;
  • classes are held as intensively as possible (full-time), involving even free time in the preparation process;
  • students are offered to work in the process of studying on real film sets for their own portfolio;
  • nine0203 Acting education in the USA implies different specifics of preparing actors for the theater stage, television or film work.

Become the best?

The United States is an attractive educational destination for those who plan to improve their language during the holidays, enroll in a local college or university. Is it worth it to come here for the “actor diploma”?

  • First, this is the most rational way for those who are really determined to get a job in the States as a professional actor. Do you have creative ambitions and do you have any doubts about your own acting talent? Choosing the right school will be the first step towards achieving your goal. nine0204
  • Secondly, studying acting in an American school is an invaluable language experience. In addition to active speech loads, group classes will finally overcome the language barrier, removing internal clamps. You don’t have to worry about the accent: long months of hard practice, working with classic English texts will polish off any roughness.
  • Thirdly, the acquired acting skills, supported by a prestigious diploma or certificate, will not be superfluous, even if you do not plan a professional career in America. nine0204

Fortunately, the INTEM company has contacts of the leading acting schools in the USA, and we could recommend you educational institutions that are distinguished by the highest class of educational services provided.

This is one of the branches of the famous Yale University (Connecticut). The whole range of theatrical disciplines is taught here – from acting and directing to theater criticism and management. Traditionally, the first half of the day is devoted to theoretical training, and the second – to rehearsals and workshops. At the disposal of students is not only the audience, but also the Yale Repertory Theater, where students can fully reveal their talents. Here it is customary to attend not only the productions of teachers and / or fellow students, but also to go to theater performances in New York together.

The Juilliard School (New York)

One of the leading schools in the arts: the local drama department was founded in the second half of the 20th century, and the diploma obtained here (bachelor / master at the end of a four-year program) carries considerable weight. The Juilliard School is one of the most attractive options if you dream of getting an acting education in the USA, but becoming a student is really difficult: no more than 10% of applicants participating in the competition are enrolled in the course every year.
