Child Development – Harrisburg Area YMCA

A Place to Learn and Grow

The Y’s child development programs provide a safe, nurturing environment for children to learn, grow and develop social skills. The Harrisburg Area YMCA offers Half Day Kindergarten, Preschool, School Age Child Care, and Full Day Care services for parents. We also offer Respite Child Care services for military families in special circumstances.

Keeping developmentally appropriate practices and collaborative communication with families in mind, we consider the individual child when our qualified, well-trained staff members plan activities. The YMCA provides family activities and encourages participation when possible. Our child development programs are based on the four core values of the YMCA: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Our facilities are a child’s after-school and summertime dream, with pools, parks, gyms, and games to fill hours and days outside of school time.

Our qualified teaching staff will help your children develop in a positive environment that stresses safety, support, and care. If you’re already in Hershey, it’s worth a visit!

The gardens are, of course, no match for Dupont’s gardens. However, if you are already in the chocolate capital of the world, then between trips to the world of chocolate and the dizzying slides of the park, visit these gardens, it’s nice to walk in silence. Everywhere you can walk on the grass, and even parking on the grass. Roses bloom in July.

Beautiful gardens, nice playground

Hershey gardens are beautiful. My family enjoyed the butterfly exhibit and walking around the gardens. My kids really enjoyed the playground. It was a relaxing way to get away from the crowds at Hershey Park.

Terrific Stop

Aug. 2017 • For two

The gardens are very beautiful. The staff at the Butterfly Atrium were very friendly and knowledgeable. And there were many different places in the garden – a grassy place, a Japanese garden, a Rose Garden hotel, an alphabet garden, a tree nursery, and several other types of gardens. It was just lovely walking around the hotel grounds – very relaxing. If you stay at the Hershey Hotel or the Lodge you get free tickets to the garden and it is within walking distance of the Hotel. nine0003

Wonderful Gardens

Aug. 2017 • Family fun

This is a beautiful place with wonderfully preserved roses, a nice Japanese garden and fun activities for kids through the garden. The only negative is that the indoor butterfly area seemed to be crowded with people in a very, very small place. Other than that, great stay. nine0003

If it’s hot, Visit again for a long day

Aug. 2017 • Family vacation

Went there with my husband and almost 2 years. Saw in other reviews that it was hard to enjoy if it was hot, so we arrived when we could (10am). Unfortunately for us, temperatures quickly reached 90 and the gardens don’t offer much shade. We got free umbrellas from the front door and they were the only reason we were able to walk around at all. The gardens were BEAUTIFUL and huge and we wish it were cooler. We spent a lot of time but we suffered from the heat and didn’t get to enjoy it as much as we wanted to. (If you have kids and they get too hot then you will see what I mean.) The butterfly atrium was amazing despite being small. Lots of butterflies everywhere! It’s hot in the room, but it’s much more butterfly like. I have a feeling it would be great if the temperature is cooler, but when it’s hot, you may wish to wait. 🙁

I love butterflies and flowers!

May 2017 • With friends

I have been in the garden twice – once during a rainy winter day – and the second time on a beautiful spring day. The cold day was perfect to enjoy the butterfly house. What a delight on a gloomy day to get into such a warm atmosphere and see so many varieties of flies free among the greenery. They have everything from butterfly pupae emerging from their chrysalis to adults. Stop if you like it when they fly and sometimes the helicopters are at you! A photographer’s dream. A spring day was in the season of light bulbs – especially tulips. The gardens are a beautiful combination of Seasons gardens, flowering trees and shrubs along with a sculpted and mirrored pond with fountain and gazebo. It is also distinguished by the area, especially associated with children. A great way to spend a wonderful holiday with young and old alike. nine0003

Parking and smelling the rose gardens

July 2017 • With friends

Roses and other flowers, plants had decals so you can remember to plant them at home. There was also a butterfly exhibit which was great. If you’re worried about a bug, don’t go to a butterfly show. They like to land on you, especially if you are like the taste. nine0003

Roz is an amazing walking tour guide Ray, informative and friendly, other staff needs training in “customer service”

July 2017 • For two

Visited the “gardens” a few years ago in the spring so wanted to come here in the summer to see the roses Saturday was beautiful and low damp so a great day to visit the gardens The roses here are amazing the queues and more shopping arcade and numerous groups of Roses of every color, size and scent just walked across the acres to take roses at the sights and the wonder of it all.. Also loved the big trees and the japanese garden and spice garden. We were lucky to get on the “boardwalk” with the tour guide ray who was very attentive and nice, he said to use that the hotel has a lot of plants but we (my husband and mself) liked the area’s herbal info.I liked the walk-in butterfly but was crowded in here. My only gripe with the girl getting in – the ticketing area seemed bored and didn’t want to work, she didn’t greet us and say thanks or give any directions, had to start – she was quiet and unfriendly, as were some of the staff in the area butterflies and in the main lobby, which gives the hotel an unfriendly feeling, one could learn “customer service”. In general, we had a good time, thank you

Harrisburg, IL | this… What is Harrisburg, Illinois?

Harrisburg ( Harrisburg , MFA /hærɪsbɜrɡ/ or /hɛərzbərɡ/) is the county seat of Saline County, Illinois, United States. Located at about 92 km (57 miles) southwest of Evansville, Indiana, 179 km (111 miles) southeast of St. Louis, Missouri. Located at the intersection of Highway 45 and Illinois-13, Illinois-34, and Illinois-145. Because of its location, Harrisburg is sometimes referred to as the “Gateway to the Shawnee National Forest” [1] .

In 2010, the population of the city was 9017 people, and together with the township – 10790 people [2] . The population peaked in the 1930s, when it reached 16,000 people. It was one of the most densely populated areas of the state outside of the Chicago metropolitan area.0194 [3] [4] . Since then, the city has experienced an economic decline due to declining demand for high-sulphur coal, remoteness from the New York Central railroad, and frequent flooding that inundates a significant area around the city, making it difficult to develop and grow these areas.

History

What is now Harrisburg was once inhabited by Algonquian-speaking tribes, including the Shawnee and Piancashaw, who lived in the dense forests of the interior. Shortly before the arrival of white settlers, the Piankasho tribe was forced out by the more aggressive Shawnee. The first European settlers, mainly from France, began to explore Illinois as early as 1690-s, settling mainly along the Mississippi River. English-speaking settlers began to arrive here only around 1790. Europeans were able to interact peacefully and fruitfully with each other, as well as with the Indians of these lands. However, the spread of English law ignored all previous rights of the indigenous peoples of America, encroachments on which led to conflict between Indians and settlers [5] .

Harrisburg originated a few miles south of the confluence of the Goshen and Shawneetown-Cascasca roads, one of the first trade routes in the country. Prior to the Anglo-American War, most of the population of Saline County lived in cabins clustered around blockhouses to protect themselves from attack by Indians and wild animals, including bears and wild cats. As new settlers continued to arrive, it became necessary to create permanent settlements, the first of which appeared in 1814. By 1840, the number of settlers had already outnumbered the Native Americans, and by 1845 the baribal bear population had been nearly wiped out.0194 [5] .

Harrisburg was founded at the beginning of the second industrial revolution, shortly after the creation of Saline County in 1847, carved out of part of Gallatin County. The city was named after James Alexander Harris, who built his house here in 1820 and planted a cornfield in the area of the current town square [6] .

In 1852, Harris, along with John Pankey, James Yandell, and John Cain, donated some of their land to a special committee of the Baptist Church that met after complaints about the need for a new county seat. Then it was Raleigh (English) Russian .. There were no roads in the district at that time, and many residents of Carrier Mills and Stonforth, while traveling to the northern settlements – Raleigh, Galatia and Eldorado, got lost. The new location of the district center was an 18-meter sandy hill overlooking the Saline River and a valley called Crusoe Island. Despite the scarcity of oak trees and the impenetrable thickets of hazel, this place was convenient, as it was located in the very center of the district. In 1853, Harrisburg became a village and covered an area of 20 acres (81 thousand m²), and in 1859In 1997, it received the status of the district center [6] .

Between 1860 and 1865, when cotton became unavailable during the Civil War, Harrisburg was one of the few cities where wool mills continued to operate. As a result of this, it became one of the industrial centers in southern Illinois. In addition, there were many mills in Harrisburg [7] . In 1872, the Cairo and Vincennes Railroad was completed, led by Ambrose Everett Burnside and Civil War veteran General Greene Berry Raum, then living in Harrisburg.0194 [1] .

In 1896, at the south end of Main Street, Robert King opened a brick factory capable of producing 15,000 bricks every 10 hours. The Barnes Lumber Company started their sawmill here in 1899, and in 1904 it reached full capacity, producing a full range of lumber, and is now the city’s oldest operating mill [8] .

During the Reconstruction Era of the South, economic conditions made cotton and tobacco cultivation impractical, grain and dairy farming, reforestation, and coal mining became commercially viable [6] . In 1889, the city’s population was 1500 people [1] .

Demographics

According to the 2010 US Census [9] , 9017 people live within the city limits. Of the 8,765 people of the same race, 7,983 (88.5%) were white, 589 (6.5%) were African American, 45 were Native American, 74 were Asian, 8 were Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, and 66 people of other races. The Hispanic population was 209 (2.3%) people. There were 4193 housing units, of which 3,753 (89.5%) were occupied and 440 (10.5%) were vacant.

Geography and climate

According to the US Census Bureau, the total area of the city is 16.57 km² (6.4 mi²), of which 16 km² (6.2 mi²) is land. Downtown, as well as Dorrisville and Gaskins City, stand on top of a sand hill, towering 103 m above sea level [37], next to the valley of the Saline River (37. 733889, -88.54583337°44′02″ N 88°32′ 45″W / 37.733889°N 88.545833°W (G) (O)). Previously, the river was mostly navigable, it was used by the first settlers to transport salt. Every spring, the river caused floods and flooding of large areas, and measures to dry its territories led to serious floods [10] .

Climate

Harrisburg is located on the border between a humid continental climate and a humid subtropical climate, there are neither mountains nor large reservoirs that can moderate the climate. The region is affected by both cold Arctic air and hot, humid tropical air from the Gulf of Mexico. The highest average temperature recorded in July is 20°C (89°F) and the lowest average temperature is -6°C (22°F) in January. However, summer temperatures can often exceed 42°C, and winter temperatures can drop to -17°C. The average monthly rainfall is about 130 mm. From November to April, precipitation is often in the form of snow, averaging 180 mm per month. The highest temperature of 45° C (113° F) was recorded on July 13, 1936, and the lowest temperature of -31.0° C (-23.0° F) was recorded on February 2, 1951 [11] .
