Hewatt is an ancient Norman name that arrived in England after the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Hewatt family lived in Huet or Huest near Evreux in Normandy, France. [1] Alternatively, the name was derived from ‘the son of Hugh’; Middle English Hugh, How, and Hew, diminutive Hughet and Hewet. [2]

Early Origins of the Hewatt family

The surname Hewatt was first found in Devon, where the first record of the family was Roger Huet, Huiet who was listed in the Pipe Rolls there in 1182, 1185. Later, the Assize Rolls listed William Huet in Shropshire in 1221 and Roger Hughet in Somerset in 1280. [3]

William de Huet paid a fine in Lincolnshire in 1204 and Peter Hughet was listed in Sussex in 1278. “Sir Walter Hewet was a distinguished warrior in France temp. Edward III., and from him descended the Hewets, created baronets 1621 and 1660, and Viscounts Hewet 1689, also eminent lawyer James Hewett, Lord Chancellor of Ireland, and 1st Viscount Lifford.” [1]

Kirby’s Quest of Somerset listed Gilbert Huet there temp. 1 Edward III. [4] The Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379 list: Agnes Huet-wyf; Ricardus Huetson; and Willelmus Howetson. [2]

Hewatt Spelling Variations

Endless spelling variations are a prevailing characteristic of Norman surnames. Old and Middle English lacked any definite spelling rules, and the introduction of Norman French added an unfamiliar ingredient to the English linguistic stew. French and Latin, the languages of the court, also influenced spellings. Finally, Medieval scribes generally spelled words according to how they sounded, so one person was often referred to by different spellings in different documents. The name has been spelled Hewitt, Hewett, Hewatt, Hewet, Hewit, Hewat and others.

Migration of the Hewatt family

To escape the political and religious persecution within England at the time, many English families left for the various British colonies abroad. The voyage was extremely difficult, though, and the cramped, dank ships caused many to arrive in the New World diseased and starving. But for those who made it, the trip was most often worth it. Many of the families who arrived went on to make valuable contributions to the emerging nations of Canada and the United States. An inquiry into the early roots of North American families reveals a number of immigrants bearing the name Hewatt or a variant listed above: Ephraim Hewett settled in New England in 1639; Francis Hewett settled in Virginia in 1652; William Hewett arrived in Barbados in 1668; Richard Hewitt settled in Virginia in 1637.

The Hewatt Motto +

The motto was originally a war cry or slogan. Mottoes first began to be shown with arms in the 14th and 15th centuries, but were not in general use until the 17th century. Thus the oldest coats of arms generally do not include a motto. Mottoes seldom form part of the grant of arms: Under most heraldic authorities, a motto is an optional component of the coat of arms, and can be added to or changed at will; many families have chosen not to display a motto.

Motto: Ne te quaesiveris extra
Motto Translation: Seek nothing beyond your sphere.

Meaning: Because it is an unassuming farmhouse, it has little recorded architectural history. Hugh Watt was born in Flenairme, County Antrim, Ireland. After his father’s death, he emigrated with his mother to Richmond, Virginia in 1790. On April 5, 1801, he married Sarah Hannon Kidd. She inherited from her father, Pittman Kidd, a farm called “Springdale” in Hanover County about 13 miles from Richmond in 1832 (360 acres in one streetcar and 171 acres in another). In 1833 her husband Hugh Watt was declared the rightful co-owner. Prior to 1836, buildings on the farm were valued at $150. In 1836 this amount was 9$28.90. Therefore, it seems obvious that this building was built in 1835. The younger son, George Watt, took over the property in 1865. The first recorded repairs were made to the house in 1935 after it was purchased by the Battlefield Park Corporation and taken over by the Virginia State Development Commission. The federal government recognized ownership of all Richmond properties, including the Watt House, on July 14, 2015. Repairs in 1935 were carried out by the Richmond firm of Claiborne and Taylor, Inc. The second recorded repair was performed on November 1945 years old. Restoration and modernization of the house is carried out by the National Park Service during the financial year. The historical significance of the house is twofold. The first is architectural in that it shows a continuation of an early type of Virginia farm built in the 1830s. This shows how difficult it is to date buildings by traditional methods if there is no documentary material. … Raw field notes exist for this structure: FN-132

Construction/Construction Dates: Watt House’s second claim to fame is that it was used for several hours by Major General Fitz-John Porter as field headquarters during the Battle of Gaines’ Mill on June 27, 1862 during the Interstate War. It was chosen because of its high location. After the battle, during the war, it was used as a hospital.

Travel: Barkerville

Continuation of Cariboo Gold Rush Trail , start here.

So, in 1862, Billy Barker found a very rich gold deposit. It was the very same year that news of previous discoveries became public knowledge and thousands of gold miners flocked to the central British Columbia area.

Barker and his partner found 60 ounces (1.7 kg) of gold in William’s brook, but to the amusement of other miners, he had a fixed idea (or maybe a flair) that he would find gold downstream of the brook, and after some time his flair was confirmed , the discovery of a gold vein at a depth of 15 meters.

His success, of course, could not but attract more gold prospectors from all over the continent – and so, by leaps and bounds, the city of Barkerville began to grow among the forest.

When Barkerville was founded, there was no Vancouver, just a lumberjack village in its place.

The first celebration of Canada Day (confederation day) took place in Barkerville, in 1868, 3 years before British Columbia joined the confederation.

During the day there were games, in the evening there was a special performance in the theatre, a ball and… fireworks! Since there were no cannons in the forest to make a salute, but there were many blacksmiths – they detonated black powder on the anvils.

At its peak, Barkerville had 5,000 residents.

Barkerville British Columbia ca.1869 Cities – View of Barkerville
(CP PHOTO) 1999 (National Archives of Canada) PA-061940For 24 years, he received the status of a National Historic Heritage of Canada.

Today it is the largest museum city in western North America, with over 125 buildings still standing (about 100 original and 25 restored). Rival with Body in California.

The main street of Barkerville certainly leaves the brightest impression.

His business card, so to speak.

Dense western-style buildings with false facades are complemented by a local feature – wooden sidewalks, or rather scaffolds, along each building.

On a sunny day, of course, it’s very nice here, but one has only to wet a dusty road – and the street turns into a dirty mess. Add hundreds of horse hooves – and you get what the people call shit.

At some time, a wooden bridge was even thrown across the street – from one side to the other.

Walking through Barkerville, the eye is invariably drawn to the signs of shops, restaurants, hairdressers – the city is replete with advertising, today it is so unusual that small business advertising can be harmonious.

But what makes Barkerville a must-see tourist attraction is that it’s not a ghost town in the usual sense. Every day the city comes alive.

It comes to life through the efforts of dozens of volunteers who play the roles of prominent residents of the city and act out scenes from the life of that time on the streets.

This is, for example, William “Billy” Barker himself.

He himself will tell you how he came here, how he found a gold mine, how he mined a little more than a ton (35.ooo ounces) of gold in his life. How he got married and sold his share in the mine, how, after only 2 years, his wife died, and he himself left the city named after him.

William Barker died on July 11, 1894, at the age of 77 in a nursing home in Victoria, penniless.

With symptoms of parkinson’s disease and presumably jaw cancer.

If you’re really lucky, Billy Barker will even show you a small nugget that he found and carries with him in a pouch.

Now, in a pandemic, there are much fewer scenes played on the streets, historical characters are trying to socially distance themselves, from which they are more like ghosts from the past floating by.

But on the other hand, there are much fewer tourists on the streets.

Previously, about 600 people were let into the historical city and tried to make a turnover: the old ones leave, the new ones come. Now the capacity is limited to 200 people per day with a mandatory pre-booking – and the city is at your disposal for the whole day.

The stagecoach is still running along the streets of the city.

Even with as many tourists as during the pandemic, you can only reserve a carriage ride in the morning.

Not that I really wanted to – it’s much more interesting to look at it from the outside than to shake it, but, unfortunately, the child was promised.

Still, as long as there is a half-empty historical city inhabited by ghosts, it should be explored, and not ride on attractions.

The first thing you see when entering the city is the Anglican Church.

St. Saviour’s Anglican Church

As in all cities of that time – wooden Gothic.

During normal times, services are held here, but in 2020 God is also self-isolating.

There is a school building next to the church.

Would you send your children to such a place?
If not, then there is an alternative: Billy Barker offered to hire the senior to the mine for $5 per day.

By order of Queen Victoria, women were not allowed to work in the mines, but could have a share in the stigma.

The school has a charming teacher in a chic dress and a map of the World centered on the Pacific Ocean.

In the smithy next to the school, a blacksmith… forges.

You can buy a poker or two piping hot, so to speak, without leaving the cash register.

Then comes the stagecoach office – skiing costs $ 10 per person, you need to reserve as soon as you enter, because places run out a few hours before closing.

Further down the street is the St. George Hotel ( St. George Hotel ) – a really operating hotel in which the price of a room varies from $ 130 to $ 720, and amenities (as well as places) are at a minimum in it.

Only the cheapest room (there is only one) is booked for a year, if not for a year and in advance.

Somewhat inconspicuous for $700 per night, don’t you think?

Among the shops that advertise themselves so diligently with signs on the main street, there is, for example, a hairdresser’s where you can see a book of records.

The photo gallery and shoemaker are closed due to COVID, so it’s best to bring a selfie stick and boots.

Politician and Dr. Hugh Watt was Regional Surgeon at the Barkerville Hospital from 1882 to 1895.

Dentist’s rates – painlessly removing a tooth cost only $5, as well as inserting a gold one.

If anything, “painless” is right here.

Unfortunately, during the pandemic, only a few buildings are open to the public, usually there are many more: you can go inside, go up to the second floor, but now you can only peep through the rope.

Like, for example, the house of William (I think they had no other names at all) Bowron, an overlander from Quebec who worked in Barkerville at various times as a librarian, then as a postman, then as a constable:

The richest building on street – Masonic lodge.

Fire tower.

In 1868, 116 houses burned down in the city in just an hour and a half, and all because of one miner who, molesting a lady, overturned the stove. But the reality of boomtowns is that within a week after the fire, 20 buildings were rebuilt.

Further down the street there was a theater where these comrades are still playing to this day – and not bad at all, I tell you, they are. From some cabaret-style compositions to Chinese folk ones.

The same characters can often be found up the street in Chinatown.

The Chinese reached out to Barkerville a little later, by the 1880s, which is partly why Chinatown is located here, as it were, on the outskirts, or rather at the end of the main street – there is almost nothing behind it.

However, the Chinese did not rush into the gold mines.

They set up businesses in the service sector, delivered all kinds of goods from across the ocean.

In general, they were doing the same thing as now.

Without them, the prosperity of the city would hardly have been possible.

Chinese School and Cultural Center.

Playhouse.

Chi Kung Tong Social Center ( Chee Kung Tong ) Barkerville is a Grade 3 Historic Site: inside one Historic Site (Historic Chinatown) inside another Historic Site (Barkerville itself).

Chee Kung Tong

De facto, this was the Chinese representation here in the forests of British Columbia, linking all local business, social alliances and all possible diaspora affairs with the emperor on the other side of the ocean.

The secondary street has more houses and stables.

As in Bodie, mining equipment is laid out right on the ground here, but unfortunately there is nothing that impressed me most in Bodie – cars.

There are mainly miners’ cabins here, some of them are new, still seasonally inhabited.

In addition to church services that are not held during the pandemic, they will also not talk about how gold was mined using a wooden water wheel, they will not teach a lesson in a Chinese or regular school, they will not print a newspaper and they will not allow gold to be panned.

There will be no tour to the cemetery. However, you can do it yourself – it is a couple of kilometers outside the city.

The cemetery is located on a hillock, in a centuries-old forest and looks very impressive from the road.

The first thing that catches your eye is life expectancy: people here lived either less than 30-40 years, or over 80, as if there is no average.
