Kia ora and welcome to Henderson Kindergarten

Henderson Kindergarten provides a rich and stimulating learning environment and is a place where children can happily learn and thrive. We provide a large outdoor natural environment which fosters children’s curiosity and independence and is an area where children can explore a range of interests. We implement a play based approach to learning where children can explore, experiment, discover and solve problems in imaginative and playful ways.

We are located next to the Opanuku reserve and is a longstanding establishment with a well-established reputation for top quality, innovative teaching.

We cater to a range of age groups from 2 to 5 years where all children are encouraged to play and learn with and alongside each other. This fosters co-operation and the implementation of Māori concepts such as Ako and Tuakana-Teina.

We pride ourselves on offering a centre where everyone is welcome to learn confidently and at their own pace. Children here demonstrate a real sense of belonging. They settle quickly and establish effective relationships with each other and the teachers.

Children are able to pursue and develop their interests with the support of caring and capable teaching staff.

Our team values the input of family and whānau, and encourage regular involvement. We also ensure that we include family aspirations for their child in their documentation and ensure that these are encouraged throughout their learning journey. We also include family and whānau input in fundraising and other kindergarten events. We love to work collaboratively with each other and the families of our little ones to make sure they are being supported in ways which fit their unique needs.

We help children with a smooth transition to school by ensuring that they have developed essential skills for life. We feed into a range of local schools in our area and many of our children have gone on to attend these schools with confidence.

Our kaiako are skilled in implementing the Incredible Years Teacher Programme which supports young children with self-regulation and their social, emotional and academic competence.

The teaching team all have a sound knowledge of Te Reo Maori to ensure that we deliver bicultural learning programmes based on the Te Whāriki curriculum.

Today, Tatiana Henderson-Stewart, like many other London entrepreneurs, is doing everything to save the business that she has been building for many years, investing considerable effort into creating her own business and funds. In the situation of sudden self-isolation and oppressive uncertainty, which no one could even think about four months ago, making innermost wishes on New Year’s Eve, she faced new problems – how to transfer classes for ninety children of different ages from three to 14 years old into online, how save personnel and not go bankrupt.

Tatyana’s business is Cherry Kindergarten, evening classes, Cherry Orchard Saturday School, and a children’s camp during school holidays. Many subjects are taught here – the Russian language, literature, mathematics, singing, dancing.

The main goal is to preserve the cultural and linguistic connection of children with Russia. 14 Russian-speaking children have been going to the Cherry kindergarten for four years. Ofsted rating – good!

Crisis measures

As soon as schools began to close, Tatyana rushed into battle, still not understanding for what period of time it was necessary to build a new strategy – for a week, for a month or for a year. At first, the number of students dropped sharply: “We planned the Russian camp during the Easter holidays, and then the summer semester, and here it’s a complete mess,” Tatyana complains. The number of children in the group was reduced from 12 to six, otherwise “they are very difficult to control online. I had to mix the age groups, because there were fewer children.

Adapting to new realities was not easy. “At first, everyone was nervous,” Tatyana recalls. The teachers were nervous, mastering new formats, and she herself fought to save staff and business. Tatyana was the first to master the Zoom online broadcasting application and trained employees via Facetime: “It was difficult for someone because of their age, and I literally explained on my fingers which windows to open, how to set up the camera. I am still present at the lessons myself – I virtually check and help. There are five such “zooms” on a weekday, and all twenty on weekends.” Tatyana and her team even had to shoot a video for parents who did not know how to keep their child busy: “We taught them how to do crafts, explained mathematics and other subjects.”

But moving classes to Zoom is not a panacea, because some parents limit the amount of screen time: “English schools have also moved online, and children are just glued to the computer. Parents are worried about this – we have lost about half of our customers.

Far from all teachers want to study with children online: some cannot adapt, while others believe that a small child should not be in online education. Not the last link in this chain is the children themselves, who are crazy about the volume of classes in the new format. “Children cannot wait – give them everything right now. Teachers need to keep their attention and interest, but without personal contact, Tatyana admits. “I quickly realized that while technology is not perfect, clothes (better bright) and background (better white) are of great importance.”

Cons and pros

The main disadvantage of the current situation is the loss of income: “Fewer children attend school online. Also, parents are not ready to pay the same money for online classes as for regular lessons. They believe that online is always cheaper, but the teacher’s contribution to the preparation for the lessons remains the same. And no one has canceled the rent yet.

Not all teachers stayed: “Most of them are self-employed hourly workers. We only have four people at the rate, and I had to send them to furlough leave, because the kindergarten for children under four cannot work online. It’s good that the government can pay up to 80% of their salary, and the self-employed are also entitled to compensation. It would be terrible to fire people now.”

One of Cherry Orchard’s main expenses is rent. “I rent one room from the school, the other from the state. I will try to freeze the rent, but so far my landlords are in quarantine themselves and I can’t get through to them.”

Are there any good things about quarantine? Tatyana rejoices at the opportunity to spend time with her own children – there are three of them: two of them are five years old, and the eldest daughter is already thirteen. “It turns out that before the quarantine, I almost always took care of other people’s children. It’s nice to be at home with your own, but even here you have to act as a teacher: schools send a lot of assignments, which the parents themselves have to figure out first. I share this task with my husband.”

Changes in the work process inspired teachers in their own way. “Colleagues were initially confused about the functions of Zoom, but quickly got involved and mastered new tricks. They shoot creative videos: butterflies fly and flowers grow there. I think teachers are still delighted with the new opportunities for online self-development.” Tatyana believes that, paradoxically, Zoom lessons have brought children and teachers closer together. The reason is broadcasts from home. “It seems to me that the school has, as it were, approached the children, because we come to each other’s houses, even if it’s virtual.”

Beautiful far away

Even Tatyana planned the schedule for the current semester, not understanding whether it would be held online or not.
