REVERSE OF A HAPPY CHILDHOOD.
America and Americans
REVERSE OF A HAPPY CHILDHOOD
The new school year begins, and money is so tight that many parents are painfully aware of the hardships that fall to their lot. My friend Blok was full of despair when I met him the other day.
“When Roger was born,” he said, “we immediately took out an insurance policy for his education. But now, due to inflation and the high cost of education, we have already used this policy, and Roger has only been studying for six months.
Are colleges expensive now? I asked.
– What colleges! Blok snorted. “Roger is in kindergarten.
— Hm! In kindergarten?
– Two thousand five hundred dollars a year, not counting various walks. It seems to me that those who start raising a baby when he is three years old make a big mistake. In this case, there is no means at all for his serious education when he reaches the age of five. As for me, if the case started again, I would probably leave him in the sandbox all the time, but my wife Alice is adamant – she wants to give him a good, solid qualification.
— Could you borrow some money from the bank so that Roger can finish kindergarten?
– That’s right! That’s exactly what I did. Borrowed a thousand dollars at the beginning of the summer.
— Well, what’s next?
– They are used to send Roger on a summer vacation.
“At least the money wasn’t wasted,” I said. — Aren’t there any government scholarships for kids who want to finish kindergarten?
– I figured it out. The special kindergarten Roger goes to could get a big scholarship from the government if they were to do germ warfare research. But the headmistress said that she would not allow her children to be occupied with any kind of research.
“Well, it doesn’t smell like a scholarship then,” I said.
— And then there’s the school bus, the paints, the modeling, and the chocolate milk, all of which go up in price and cost an extra $1500.
– Yes! – I said. The older the child, the higher the prices.
– Exactly! I approached Yale to find out how much it would cost me to send Roger there. They ask not to annoy them with such questions.
— Couldn’t Roger himself start earning money, at least partially, for his upbringing and training?
– Alice is totally against this. She says kindergarten should be the happiest time in a child’s life.
– I believe that the day Roger graduates from kindergarten, all your sacrifices should end.
— What are you! Roger has already stated that he wants to enter the first grade of the school.

HOW TO BECOME A GREAT WRITER
Before, to become a writer, it was enough just to sit down and write. Today, if you want to be a writer, you must first of all kill some huge beast. “Hemingway killed a leopard,” friends told me. —

You have a new message
Ah, hidden suittor. The man behind the mask. “It was you all along!” I love a good hidden suitor / secret admirer / mysterious pen pal.
The most successful usually start out as the classic “enemies to friends” trope. You have a protagonist who writes secret letters/emails/texts to someone who fulfills and comforts them. Someone with whom they share their deepest feelings. They have no idea that their secret confidant is actually the same boy who won the class president vote in their place last week and their most hated rival since kindergarten.
Although this image is not new, it has flourished thanks to a youth resurgence in the past few years. So if the thought of leaving a secret note in a book, or opening your inbox to see a swoon-worthy email from a secret pen pal, or flipping through the pages to try and figure out who the mystery suitor is before the main character realizes who it is, makes you dizzy, and then enjoys this list of hidden things. Tor YA books that will make Nora Ephron proud.
Tell me three things Julie Buxaum
To say that Jesse’s new life is strange would be an understatement: after she lost her mother to cancer, her father sells their house, moves across the country, to live with a woman he ran away with on a business trip and enrolls her in the elite private sector. a school where everyone makes her feel even more of an outsider. Jessie was comfortable at home: she had both parents, a home she loved, and friends. Here she feels lost in a sea of designer clothes, expensive cars and people who spend their summer holidays in distant lands. When a teenager receives an anonymous email from someone/no one offering to teach her how to navigate this new schooltory, she notices how strange the situation can be, but responds anyway. Who is this mysterious Someone / Nobody (SN for short)? Will trusting SN lead to success or make her even more of a target for bullies?

She soon texts through hidden tapes and becomes close to her secret pen pal due to a mutual interest in indie music. Who is her mysterious new friend?
Alex, ca. Jenn Bennett

But after Bailey settles down and starts working at a quirky local museum, her mission to find her “movie-obsessed soul mate” takes a back seat as she becomes consumed by a love-hate relationship with Porter, her arrogant fellow surfer. Predictably, Bailey and Porter’s fiery fire soon sparks a passion and they start dating despite Bailey’s guilt for keeping it a secret from her online friend.
