About Public Schools
School of Horticulture “Green City” – School “Turnip”
“It doesn’t matter what you do; it’s important that whatever you
you touch, changed shape, became different
earlier, so that a particle of yourself remains in it.
This is the difference between a person who simply cuts grass
on the lawn, and a real gardener.”
R.D. Bradbury
School “Repnoe” within the course of each educational year paid attention to landscaping, environmental issues, problems of improvement and development of urban spaces. At one of these seminars, the idea arose to organize a separate project within the framework of “Turnip” dedicated to topical problems of landscaping. It arose after the director of the School, Irina Karpova, visited the Botanical Garden of Moscow State University and got acquainted with its educational programs. Dreams took on real shape after negotiations with the School’s expert, Deputy Director of the Botanical Garden of Moscow State University Alexander Rappoport.
As a result, it was decided to make a special horticultural course in Voronezh based on the program of the Botanical Garden. School graduates Yulia Borovikova and Tatyana Vinokur picked up this idea and implemented it under the guidance of an expert and the management of Repnoy, founding the Green City. “I was interested in the story of Irina Mikhailovna Karpova about what kind of school Alexander Rappoport organized in Moscow. He gathered a professional community, an interesting program, excellent speakers. And I really wanted to have a similar community in Voronezh, ”recalls Yulia Borovikova.
Getting Started
The first educational course of the horticultural school started in September 2018. After the introductory lecture by Alexander Rappoport, the organizers collected feedback and wishes from the audience. As a result, the first program of eight lectures was formed.
The school teaches modern principles of landscaping and direct work with soils and a range of landscape gardening crops, considers the design of urban spaces, gets acquainted with examples of successful commercial gardens – and more.
The organizers are negotiating with the best landscape experts in Voronezh, Moscow and other Russian cities. Their names are announced during the course. In addition to Alexander Rappoport, the guests of the “Green City” were the designer of the Moscow Zaryadye park, dendrologist Igor Safiullin, leading researcher at the Academy of Biology and Biotechnology. DI. Ivanovsky Sergey Gorbov and other experts.
About goals and dreams
The goal of the school is to form an expert community in Voronezh by bringing together industry professionals within the framework of one project. That is why the lectures are open to the public – in addition to studying within the framework of the annual course, anyone has the opportunity to listen to any lecture of interest once. In addition, the organizers have plans to implement social projects with the students of the “Green City” following the results of the training.
“Personally, it seems important to me to get to know professionals in my city, to develop internal connections,” says Tatyana Vinokur, herself a landscape design engineer. — And for the community it is important to communicate with diverse practitioners. They provide up-to-date information, which is extremely important for our, in general, unhurried profession.”
“For me, plants are more of a hobby, but I am happy to help organize the school, I want to see more beauty around, in urban spaces and parks,” said Yulia Borovikova.
