It’s the website the realtors tell you to look at to get the best ratings for schools. Helpful when you are figuring out where to buy/rent a home.

“Terrible school rating system”

Angie C.

6/3/21

Do not use Greatschools. org for checking schools. They use one same cookie cutter for all school systems, which often times can misrepresent/ undervalue a school. Everything they use is based on so-called State test score. They do not look at the other school curriculums and programs. They are the most terrible system out there for parents to use for school checks, please do not use it or trust their information. Completely misleading

“Snarky Service”

The rep who dealt with my support request apparently thought I should be able to handle the issue myself. In addition to requiring multiple follow up contacts, they were condescending and snarky.

“Site cleansed of reviews”

The Greatschools.org website is a resource I’ve used to quickly map the school location, find out socioeconomic composition, and school performance data. All this the site does well. It also has a useful article database, such as http://www.greatschools.org/gk/emotional-smarts/. My difficulty with the website is that it (routinely) sanitizes, deletes, or removes reviews about schools from parents and students. It also appears as if they only like positive reviews; positive review however poorly written are preferable over any reviews exposing any critical flaws with the school itself. That to me is a form of censorship. I want to post a review about a school where the principal cheated me out of my work hours, and they were also ethnically discriminatory, and they are celebrating a purported Hmong hero who was in fact a criminal who smuggled heroin (http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL1101/S*******/new-york-times-forgets-that-vang-pao-was-a-drug-dealer.htm). They have a great display case about him at the school, and the principal is very proud of her association with him. The school also serves as a community center for the parents with ELL classes for them. Great Schools also won’t let you log in with just Facebook (it wouldn’t let me log in with my FB account).

“Inaccurate Information and Zero Ownership”

After reaching out over 15 times to have inaccurate district and school information for our home there is nothing else to say other than they keep referring us to “Precisely” yet we are not allowed to contact them because they do not have a customer service department. Knowing this information, GreatSchools take zero ownership over the incorrect information and promise to update it quarterly. After waiting for 2 quarters to pass, they have yet to correct any information OR have any plans to.

“Income vs Education”

The more wealthy and whiter the school, the higher the rating of the school. The rating index methodologies are not evidence based and don’t adhere to established statistical analysis when reviewing the underling data. Why this site is allowed to exist at all is unfathomable to me and those who can actually do math. Do not use this horrible site to establish what may be a good school for your child.

“GreatSchools is very inaccurate”

Deleted my review about racism and bullying that my daughter experienced at Amy Montessori School in Brookfield, WI. The stocking part was that the preschool teacher saw it and did nothing to stop it. It seems like GreatSchools only wants to report positive reviews. I think that someone should create another school review website which is more honest.

“Terrible site that inadvertently promotes white supremacy”

They did a major overhaul of how they score schools in 2017 and now it’s terrible and damaging to society, it essentially tells families to move to areas that are all-white with zero diversity. Let me explain. A very diverse school in a nice town on the West Coast, if students of different races average different scores, then the overall school is PENALIZED assuming incorrectly they are treating students differently. Meanwhile a poor all-white school with lower overall average scores, still gets 9/10 or 10/10 ratings, again because they aren’t penalized by this idiot racial-difference penalization. Maybe the site had good intentions but it actually screws over families that chose to live in diverse towns and rewards all-white supremacy. It’s terrible and Zillow should decouple immediately!

“Not a good source for school review”

The rating from great school is not fair, they are more favored by the realtors for buying and selling property purpose. If you want better school reviews you need to check out niche. They consider everything from the school and gives a much more reasonable review.

“Not accurate”

The information on our local school information is so out of date. Contact information is old. Most recent reviews are from 9 years ago. Don’t believe (good or the bad) info on this site. Do the research yourself.

“Inaccurate Reviews”

Great Schools only reports positive, glowing reviews of schools. It blocks any truthful, negative reviews of schools that they list on their website. The lack of transparency and truthfulness is shameful. It provides incorrect and misleading information to families.

“Not accurate at all.”

Why do you claim an accurate rating when you divide kids into low income and everybody else? Last time I checked 2+2=4 no matter how much your household earns. Just go by the TEST scores, state and national averages.

“Funded by orgs aiming to privatize public education”

Steer clear of Great Schools. The major orgs funding the site heavily promote the corporatization and privatization of public schools and it appears to be more of a page designed to funnel parents into stumbling onto pro-charter websites than anything else.

Ask Eli: Impact Of Lower GreatSchools Rankings On Your Home Value

This regularly-scheduled sponsored Q&A column is written by Eli Tucker, Arlington-based Realtor and Rosslyn resident. Please submit your questions to him via email for response in future columns. Enjoy!

Question: Do you think the recent changes to the rankings of Arlington schools on GreatSchools.org will have an impact on home values?

Answer: Sometime in the last few months, GreatSchools.org quietly changed their school ranking criteria, which resulted in a drop in every high school and middle school in Arlington by 1-2 points (10 point scale).

The two biggest K-12 public school ranking websites in the US are Niche.com and GreatSchools.org with about 6M and 4M monthly visits, respectively (SchoolDigger is a distant third with about 500k).

In my experience, buyers in the DC Metro rely more heavily on GreatSchools because Niche lacks differentiation between schools (everybody is a winner). The change in Arlington County Public Schools rankings on GreatSchools is worth noting and I suspect that it will have a negative impact on the housing market.

GreatSchools’ Explanation

In the About section of GreatSchools, they explain the changes in their grading criteria with the following: “In the past, the overall GreatSchools Rating in most states was based on test scores.

In some states*, the GreatSchools Rating was also based on student progress (or “growth”) and college readiness data (SAT/ACT participation and/or performance and/or graduation rates).

Our school profiles now include important information in addition to test scores — factors that make a big difference in how children experience school, such as how much a school helps students improve academically, how well a school supports students from different socioeconomic, racial and ethnic groups, and whether or not some groups of students are disproportionately affected by the school’s discipline and attendance policies.

Many of these important themes now have their own rating, and these themed ratings are incorporated into the school’s overall GreatSchools Summary Rating.

Old vs New Rankings

Below is a table showing the before and after scores for all Arlington County middle and high schools, as well as a limited set of Fairfax County/Falls Church middle and high schools (the ones I had documented scores for before the change).

All “old” scores are as of Fall 2017. Note that my request to GreatSchools for the “old” scores for all Northern VA/DC Metro schools was denied.

Why It Does/Doesn’t Matter

I’d be lying if I told you I knew what the impact will be to Arlington home prices and demand, but I think a negative impact will be felt to some degree.

Schools are at the top of many buyers’ criteria list and most of those buyers, whether they’re local or relocating into the area, set a minimum score for the school boundaries they’ll purchase a home in and rely on GreatSchools for their data.

Below are some points I came up with for why it may or may not have an impact on the housing market:

  • It Doesn’t: It appears the majority of public schools in Northern VA were reduced by 1-2 points on GreatSchools, so buyers are still as likely to choose Arlington as they have always been. The alternatives have not improved.
  • It Does: While the reduction of most school scores in Northern VA may not change where or what people buy, the lower scores may decrease overall demand in Northern VA housing and result in less motivated buyers.
  • It Does: I don’ know if Montgomery County and Northwest DC public schools saw similar changes, but if they did not, we may lose buyers to those jurisdictions because their relative value has increased.
  • It Doesn’t: Arlington County Public Schools are still ranked the #1 school system in the state.
  • It Doesn’t: It doesn’t appear that Niche.com has introduced any changes and Yorktown and Washington-Lee are ranked an A+ and Wakefield is ranked an A on that site.
  • It Does: Could the fact that Arlington’s highest ranking high school is now a 5 impact the decisions of employers considering a move to the DC Metro?

I have no doubt that over the course of 2018 I will have local and out-of-town buyers tell me they do not want to purchase a home in Arlington because it has poorly rated (high) schools.

For me and my colleagues who know Arlington, we will point them towards resources that show how great the entire ACPS system is. However, if you recall from my column in July 2017, about half of the agents who closed a deal in Arlington only had one or two transactions here, meaning that agents who don’t know Arlington well are unlikely to have the appropriate background to give their clients better guidance about our schools.

What To Do?

GreatSchools.org wields a lot of power over home values across the country and the drop in our ratings is frustrating, but just like a bad Yelp review for a restaurant, we have to acknowledge the change and find ways to offset it by making it easy for buyers to find more favorable information.

I’d love to hear from readers in the comment section who purchased or are in the process of buying a home in Arlington, who placed a lot of weight in the GreatSchools rankings – how would these changes have impacted your decision when you bought or how are these changes impacting your current purchase strategy?

School № 253 Very interesting classes in groups with the connection of children of different ages and parents. Very interesting in physics and mathematics; a wonderful performance on history and literature, interesting reports. I am very appreciative and grateful. Sincerely, Alimova E.V. (November 27, 2012)

Viksman A.L. (mother of a student of the 4th grade – Sophia V.)

I really enjoyed working with children at physics and mathematics lessons. The teachers are friendly and approachable. The math teacher aroused the interest of the 4th graders. An integrated history and literature lesson is a big deal! Dry dates and events in the light of literary frames turn into a wonderful and fascinating journey. Thank you! (27.11.2012)

Feedback on the interactive lesson (the mother of a student of the 4th grade – Egor G.)

The kids really liked it! All liberated, open, nice. The math teacher had an entertaining lesson, talking about simple things in a fun way! At the integrated lesson of history and literature, I liked the scene “The Miserly Knight”!

Thank you! (27.12.2012)

Reviews of parents about the attended lesson on preparation for school (18.01.2014)

Feedback on the attended lesson on preparation for school (teacher N. Shevyrkova)

Larisa Nikolaevna conducted an interesting and informative lesson. Children constantly participated: they gave answers individually and all together. The alternation of oral and written tasks did not allow the children to be distracted. In addition, the guys cheered up at the gym. Children and parents were happy. Thank you!

Review of the class attended to prepare for school (teacher Shevyrkova L. N.)

The lesson was very interesting, conducted in a playful way, in a friendly, attentive atmosphere. The material was chosen to show the knowledge of children, to repeat what they learned. The guys had a lot of fun! Thank you.

Review of the lesson attended in preparation for school (teacher Kravchenko T. I.)

The lesson was held in a playful way, very accessible and interesting. The children actively participated. They obviously like it. They listen and expect every word from the teacher. Very pleased. Thank you! nine0008

Review of the attended lesson on preparation for school

(Arkhipenko N.N. is very friendly, the teacher is very friendly) treats children, is attentive, knows children by names. When children complete written tasks, gives comments to parents on ways to strengthen skills, tips on pronunciation of letters with an explanation of the reasons. Also during the lesson, he offers children and conducts warm-up exercises with them, which help them switch their attention, relax their muscles. The teacher carefully observes how the children complete the task and, if necessary, additionally explains. It doesn’t interfere with the rest of the kids though. Despite the different levels of speed in completing tasks for children, the teacher was able to provide such a form of learning that children do not get bored, do not worry that they are late, and the lesson takes place in an interesting and dynamic environment. Thank you, we are very satisfied! nine0008

Review of the lesson attended to prepare for school (Arkhipenko N.N.)

Lesson all children in the topic of the lesson are covered and involved. Good interesting visual aids for children. The children were very interested, good physical. minutes. Thanks to Nina Nikolaevna!

(Yu. S. Kurchikova – mother of the future first-grader on January 18, 2014)

I want to thank everyone who works at this school. For me, as a parent, everything is important: the attitude of teachers towards my child and the learning process itself. My son is already in the third grade. Every day, meeting him from school, I see his burning eyes, the desire to share his discoveries with me. He does not study “excellently”, but the fact that the child goes to school with great desire and does not want to stay at home, even when he falls ill, says a lot. Thank you for your kind attention and for the knowledge that you give to our children! nine0106

(Third grader’s mother )

Note about the school.

Our family is happy with the choice of the school. The school is beautiful and clean. Classes are equipped with modern technologies.
The atmosphere at the school is friendly. The teachers who work there are experts in their field. A wide range of additional classes allows each student to choose a business to their liking.
For 13 years, the school has developed many of its own traditions. Parents take an active part in the life of the school together with the students. nine0120 The most important thing is that my child is happy to go to school.

We would like to wish our beloved school and all teachers a Happy New Year! We wanted to go to this school with great desire. And our dream came true. Now our son is studying here. We are very satisfied. Our school is clean, tidy, spacious and bright. This is the merit of all who work in it. It can be seen that our school is dear to everyone. Communicating with the teachers of the child, I want to note their professionalism, activity, goodwill. Thanks for this! I wish you success! And happy New Year! nine0106

(Student’s parents)

Any school is a big family in which life goes on as usual, has its own traditions. A team of teachers led by director Pluzhnik A.B. do everything to create comfortable conditions for the education and upbringing of our children. After all, the main thing is that children get a good education and grow up worthy people. We have chosen this school for our child, we trust you and promise to help you in our common cause. The New Year is coming soon, and we want to wish our school prosperity, and all the staff – health and all the best! nine0106

Very satisfied with the training, as well as the attitude. I started studying at Kursk “Copywriting from 0 to PRO”, I realized that the course was not quite mine, although there was an interesting presentation of the material, the curators asked seriously, I had to redo the work in order to pass the dz. But, nevertheless, I was more interested in marketing and I decided to transfer to a marketing course….
