Gauthier Capuçon and Jérôme Ducrot in KZCH: Debussy, Massenet, Fauré, Saint-Saens, Piazzola, Rachmaninov, Ducrot: _arlekin_ — LiveJournal ://users.livejournal.com/-arlekin-/2719325.html

– but Gauthier’s younger cellist brother has only now succeeded, and even then … Although the first number of the evening was the Debussy sonata for cello and piano, and its second the part, played by the duo Capuçon-Ducrot with delightful inner looseness, set the tone for the best. In addition, the performers showed that musical impressionism is not necessarily a cloudy, viscous “something”, which often appears in the works of Debussy or Ravel, including those of natural Frenchmen; that sophistication does not preclude detailed precision.

But then followed a strange, dubious block of annoying hits of late French romanticism – well, Faure’s “Elegy”, and Massenet’s “Meditation”, and Saint-Saens’s “Swan” … (Here is Renault Capuçon in his time with David Kadush played “Swan” … – however, an encore). No, Gauthier Capuçon’s cello sounds great, you can literally sing, and Ducrot is a great pianist, an ideal duet partner, especially when the program consists largely of numbers, where the piano part is reduced to an accompaniment function. But the sad thing is that the program obviously raised questions that remained unanswered – what kind of whimsical thought prompted it to be compiled in such a way? On the one hand, two opuses of a large form, not the most worn out, but not rare either, quite recognizable, one for each department. On the other hand, there is a scattering of various hit miniatures, neither conceptually nor stylistically compatible with the sonatas of Debussy and Rachmaninov, except perhaps according to the principle “and now according to the numerous wishes of the working people …”

Then it is clear how Piazzola with his “Grand Tango” turned out to be in the same set with Debussy and in addition to him Massenet, Fauré, Saint-Saens – it was performed by the French, it must be admitted, with great taste, without falling into a stage rage, rather the other extreme – subtly to the point of tediousness, but still “culturally”, and nevertheless, the audience was “brought in” before the intermission: for what? In order to return after a break with Rachmaninov’s sonata, which occupied almost the entire official second part, already boring, and in the refined French version these cloying motives are simply unbearable, despite the efforts of the artists from time to time to “gasp” (well, according to theirs, according to according to the local standards – according to local standards, this is still called “falling asleep on the go”).

And as if Rachmaninov’s sweetness was not enough – for dessert they saved up Ducrot’s own piece “Encore” As the evening progressed, it became clear that avant-garde experiments from trusted comrades were not to be expected, they, like genuine folk composers, write realistic music, but a little thing a la Zhurbin with burlesque-humorous extreme sections at a fast pace, allowing the cellist to demonstrate the notorious “virtuosity” from scratch, and the middle one, as it were, “lyrical”, with the injection of false pathos before the reprise, did not become a pleasant surprise for me personally – but for the target audience, According to my observations, very much so. Not to mention the arrangement of Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise” as the first encore, finally “candied” everything, so when the guests gave out the second encore – it seems to be completely inopportune, but encore, still encore – Joplin’s ragtime – he did not spoil the mood, I didn’t care anymore .

Renault Capuçon

Renault Capuçon was born in Chambéry in 1976.
