Robert Fulton was of Irish origin. He was born in America in the small town of Little Britel, located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
This event took place in 1765. His parents emigrated shortly before from Ireland. In their old homeland they belonged to the Irish tenant-farmer class, so notorious for their plight. At his new place of residence, in America, Fulton’s father, unable to acquire a farm, was forced to do mainly daily work on neighboring farms. The family dreamed of sooner or later acquiring a piece of land and becoming an independent farming family. This position seemed to the Fulton family the height of well-being, and the dreams of such well-being were so strong that later Fulton, as soon as he acquired the first funds, immediately hurried to fulfill the long-term dream of his loved ones and bought a farm. So far, however, in anticipation of its implementation, the large Fulton family, which consisted mainly of young children, eked out the most miserable existence. Only one father worked, and his earnings were not always enough to feed so many mouths. Under such conditions, the birth of a new child, Robert, brought little joy to the parents.
To top it off, Robert’s father died when he was only three years old, and the family finally found itself in a hopeless situation.
Fulton’s childhood thus passed under the most difficult material conditions. His mother had to do all sorts of hard work in order to somehow feed her children. The latter was by no means always successful, and children often went hungry and endured other material hardships. Fulton always reverently remembered his mother, who heroically endured the heavy burden placed on her by fate, and not only managed to raise her children, but also gave them the opportunity to receive at least a primary education. No matter how hard the situation of this poor woman was, she found it possible to send her children to the local village school and pay for their education. Robert Fulton also visited it. It was a simple school, and its whole course consisted in teaching reading and writing; but it should also be remembered with a kind word, since it gave Fulton the means for further self-education, which, as we shall see, he used in the best possible way.
At the age of twelve, Fulton completed his studies and had to enter into life in order to independently earn a piece of bread.
Already in these early childhood years in Fulton, an inclination was sharply revealed to two occupations, which then filled his whole life – painting and mechanics. As a boy, instead of taking part in the games of his peers, he sat over his drawings or fiddled with various cunning mechanical devices. In the latter respect, he represents a complete analogy with Stephenson, whose aptitude for mechanics manifested itself in the earliest years. Fulton’s favorite pastime was visiting various kinds of workshops, where he looked closely at various apparatuses and tools and asked about their use and purpose. Fulton could satisfy his love for painting only with difficulty, since poverty deprived him of the opportunity to acquire drawing supplies, and he had to be content with charcoal and chalk, with which he depicted all kinds of drawings wherever he could, for which he often got pretty bad from the elders.
At the age of twelve, Fulton was taken by his mother to Philadelphia and apprenticed to a goldsmith. After a free life in his native village, where Fulton had complete freedom and enough time to indulge in his favorite pastimes, the new environment was very difficult for him. He now spent whole days, now running on errands for his master, now performing various duties in his household, then, finally, doing various small work in the workshop. To the skill that Fulton was supposed to learn, he from the very beginning felt the deepest disgust, and so until the end he could not overcome it. The owner of the workshop was in despair, believing that Fulton could not learn the techniques of craftsmanship due to stupidity, and waved his hand at him, content with the fact that he used him for various menial tasks. But the stronger awakened in Fulton at that time a passion for painting, and he used all his free time for exercises in this art.
