We drive from Houston on Highway 10 through San Antonio all the way to Fredericksburg in about four hours. Highway 29 leads to it from Austin0. The town is small, only about 10 thousand people live there, but it is very cozy, clean and original.

Fredericksburg was founded in 1846 by the Prussian baron Otfried Hans von Meisenbach, who headed the “Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas”, better known as the “Noblemen’s Society”, and was settled mainly by German emigrants, mostly intellectuals who fled Germany after the 1848 revolution.

And although the majority of the population speaks American, the Texan dialect of German has been preserved here. Residents carefully preserve the culture of their ancestors. The town newspaper is published in German. Some street names are written in two languages, there are also duplicate names in German in cafes, restaurants, pubs. For example, the main street, Main Street, in German is called Hauptstrasse ((Hauptstrasse) . This street is always crowded, which is so reminiscent of European cities, because there are practically no pedestrians on the streets in Houston. Maybe that’s why I really like to go there .

The city attracts many tourists who like to wander through the antique shops, of which there are a great many. Americans are very fond of all kinds of antiques. When we looked at some of these stores on our first visit, I was surprised – could such shabby kitchen stools, cabinets for dishes of the last century or iron beds, on which great-grandfathers used to sleep, really be of interest to anyone? Lots of souvenir shops with local jewelry, especially silver and semi-precious stones. Here you can sit in a real German brewery, where German sausages with cabbage are served with excellent beer. Or in the pastry shop to taste wonderful German cakes.

There is also a winery that makes wine from grapes grown in Texas, and in a small shop from this winery on Main Street you can always taste different varieties of wines. Every October, the Oktoberfest beer festival is held in Fredericksburg, which attracts many beer lovers not only from Texas, but also from other states.

There are no high-rise buildings in this city, except for churches and churches. The tallest, The National Museum of the Pacific War on Main Street, has an incomplete third floor and a turret. Fredericksburg is home to the highly revered US Admiral Chester Nimitz, World War II US Pacific Fleet Commander .

The bulk of the population are prosperous people, many pensioners who, having worked most of their lives in noisy megacities, move here to live in peace and quiet. Another feature is the absolute predominance of the white population, which here is 93.1%, while in Texas as a whole, the colored population is now more than 37%.

There are a variety of small private hotels, both in the city and in the surrounding area, where bed and breakfasts are provided for a moderate fee. And around the city there are many places where you can engage in hunting and fishing, and for lovers of such activities, all this is organized by the respective societies.

Fredericksburg is very green and beautiful, well maintained. The walls of many houses are covered with ivy, on Main Street, every shop and cafe has flowers in huge tubs, small flower beds are laid out, there are tiny ponds with beautiful fish.
