Welcome to La Petite Academy, an educational preschool and daycare in Folsom, CA. My name is Chris and I am the academy director. I have more than 30 years of experience and a certificate in early childhood education. I started working here as a teacher in 1993.

Our school offers Infant and Toddler Care, Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten and School-Age programs. We’ve been open since 1987. I strive to create a welcoming environment and maintain an open-door policy.

We have an outstanding staff that is dedicated to our children and families. They have over 100 years of combined experience. More than half of our staff has been with us for at least five years and one staff member has been here since 1987! All of our staff is CPR certified and has had First Aid training.

Sacramento Kindergarten Goes Full-Day: Parents Unhappy

Local preschools go full-time to keep students ready for elementary school. This trend is spreading across the region, with Sacramento, Folsom, and San Juan offering more activities throughout the day. About 80% of school districts offer full-time kindergarten classes, writes SacBee.

State legislators are also trying to extend the school day for California’s youngest students. Assemblyman Kevin McCarthy is advancing a bill that would allow kindergarten schedules to reflect those used for high school students, with extra teaching minutes, more learning and more play. In his opinion, a full day helps parents who have to work.

Calls for more classes come as parents express concern about learning losses during the pandemic. Families want their children to spend time in class to catch up on the days they spent at home. But not all parents are happy with the changes.

Nicole McCarthy from Folsom sent her daughter to a private school that had a full day of kindergarten. According to McCarthy, it took her daughter months to adjust to the longer day. The girl was overwhelmed by the amount of work that was required of her.

“She’s so tired,” my mother says. “It helped me as a working parent and she learned a lot, but I’m not sure if it was the best for her.”

In 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill to introduce full-time preschool classes, citing budget constraints. However, full-time classes are slowly starting to appear in classrooms across the region. Half-day programs typically last two or three hours, while the full-day preparatory group runs four to seven hours.

Folsom Cordova Unified will offer full-day prep classes in all schools for the 2023-24 school year. Natomas Unified is already doing this – classes are held from 7:45 to 13:40. San Juan Unified offers after-school care options and is working to expand these programs to additional campuses. Sacramento City Unified offers afterschool classes at 16 schools and plans to expand.

Some parents say that full-time education is just stretching the time.

“Full-day would be convenient if the curriculum were adjusted to allow for more play and natural learning, but the current structure is bad for many kids,” said Paula McDonald of Rancho Cordova, adding that there is too much emphasis on achieving certain goals and long report cards.

“It’s terrible and sets them up for failure rather than success,” she added.
