How to take care of an Ant Farm

It is very interesting and exciting to study wildlife, having an ant farm at home. But it is not enough just to buy a formicarium. You need to know how to care for an ant farm.

ANTKingdom is a formicaria dealer and has extensive experience in breeding and keeping ants at home. In this article, we will tell you how to properly care for the farm so that the insects feel fun and cheerful!

Ant infestation

It is best to purchase formicarium together with ants. Then you do not have to decide how many insects should be in the farm. If there is not enough space for them, they will begin to control the population.

In the first days, ants can live in a test tube or immediately move. At the same time, they can hide in their new home without being active. This is a normal reaction – adaptation. After acclimatization, the colony will actively develop. If the ants are in no hurry to leave the test tube, it is recommended to darken the living passages, since these insects are very fond of darkness.

What to feed

Feeding these insects is easy. To do this, just remove the lid and put food. There are 2 types of feeders – for protein and grain. The main thing is to know what you can give to ants. At the same time, the feeding process takes 5 minutes a week. Food should be given in small portions so that it does not remain and does not rot.

Plant or animal food is used to feed ants. First of all, they need carbohydrates, which are required for energy production. Ants also require protein to allow the insects to reproduce.

The choice depends on the type of insects kept in the farm. Be sure to ask what family they belong to and what they can eat. You can buy food on our website.

How to properly water ants

It is simply impossible to overestimate the importance of water for an ant farm. Remember, water is much more important for these insects than food. An ant can go without food for several weeks, without water it will last a maximum of 2-3 days.

Water is poured into drinkers. Farm humidification chambers are not suitable for this. Lack of water will lead to the death of insects, so this aspect should be given special attention and in no case should we forget about replenishing water supplies for insects.

How to properly moisten formicaria

To ensure a comfortable life for ants, it is necessary to maintain a certain level of humidity in their home. In the formicaria offered by ANTKingdom, special humidification chambers are provided for this purpose.

With a lack of moisture in the living chambers, ants begin to accumulate near the humidifiers in the arena. The main thing is to pay attention to this during the time, and restore the required level of humidity as quickly as possible.

It is very difficult to monitor the humidity level from the behavior of insects. You can solve this problem with the help of a hygrometer – a device for determining the humidity of the air, which can be purchased in our online store. It will help you easily determine how much water needs to be poured into the chambers. completely solving this problem.

If you are just starting to learn how to care for an ant farm, be careful about moistening, trying to find the optimal water level in the chambers of the formicarium. The best solution is to buy a hygrometer, otherwise mistakes cannot be avoided.

Care

Ants are easy to care for. These insects are quite unpretentious. However, you should know the rules for their maintenance:

  1. Do not put the farm in a sunny or very bright place.
  2. Do not move the formicarium unnecessarily.
  3. Avoid vibration near the truss.
  4. Feed the ants in a timely manner, do not forget to water them during the time and maintain the correct level of humidity!
  5. The farm should be cleaned regularly as food and waste products accumulate. There will be no problems with leaving, because ants are clean insects that drag all the garbage to a certain place in the arena. It is convenient to clean the formicarium with tweezers or a handheld vacuum cleaner.
  6. Do not spray anything near the Formicarium.

By following these simple rules, you can create comfortable conditions for insects in which they can develop and multiply well.

Basic rules for keeping an ant farm

For beginners, other rules for caring for ants will be interesting, which will help in their maintenance: . They are undemanding to the conditions of detention and have a clear classification by profession. At the same time, they differ in size and properties, so everyone can find an option “to their liking”;

  • worker ant lives for about 3 years, the queen is up to 25 years or more.
  • To organize an ant farm, a small formicarium with dimensions of 25x20x10 cm (“M”) is first suitable. After about 2-3 years, the colony grows and if the owner of the farm has a desire to increase the population, he will need a more serious house for ants, which can be bought on our website. If there is no such desire, the ants themselves will control the optimal number. Delivery to any region of the country is possible, since insects are sent in special containers, with the necessary supplies of water and feed.

    All about caring for an ant farm and ants: how to populate, feed, clean

    Have you got ants as pets, but do not know how to properly care for these insects? How can a beginner provide an artificial anthill with everything necessary and create favorable conditions for the development of a colony? We will help!

    In order for your formicaria to thrive with life, it is important to consider a number of aspects:

    • food;
    • life support;
    • maintenance of suitable conditions;
    • insect care.

    All of these are important factors that directly affect the life of your colony.

    The first settlers

    When you have made your first arthropod friends, you should take care of the housing problem. For a comfortable stay, the colony must correspond to the size of the ant farm. If there is not enough space, the ants can die, and if there is a large amount of unused territory, they can collect garbage and food leftovers there.

    After settling, ants may behave unnaturally – hide, do not communicate with each other, refuse food or water. This is fine. Full acclimatization takes time.

    After settlement there should be free cells – the colony will develop, it will need more space.

    Watch a video on how to populate an ant farm:

    Food delivery

    Although anthills do not require constant monitoring, it is necessary to provide insects with food. Even beginners can handle it – just remove the lid and put food in.

    Feed depends on insect species . Some prefer other insects (mosquitoes, mealworms, crickets), others eat plant foods.

    For feeding, either small portions that are easy to consume immediately on the spot (eg bread crumbs) or whole pieces that are difficult to carry into other compartments are suitable. Do not give insects an excess amount of food – food leftovers will simply rot, become moldy.

    Also don’t forget about water. Depending on the type of farm, the liquid is poured into special drinkers or distributed throughout the anthill itself. Without water, the colony will die of dehydration.

    Humidification

    For the comfortable existence of ants, it is necessary to maintain the level of humidity. For humidification, special chambers are provided (in small ones – 1, in large ones – 2 or 3), they must be filled with water. To correctly calculate the liquid level, watch the formicarium. With excess moisture, ants are less active and try to hide. If there is not enough moisture, condensation and a water film disappear from the walls.

    Care must be taken at the beginning of the ant farm, e For beginners, humidification chambers located at a distance from the colony are suitable. This will protect insects from high humidity at first. If necessary, these arthropods will independently change their place of residence, choosing the best rooms.

    Care

    How to take care of the inhabitants of the ant farm and provide the ants with everything they need? It is not difficult – such insects do not require special conditions of detention, regular changes in temperature or adjustment of indicators.

    Beginners should remember a few simple rules:

    • Do not place the farm in direct sunlight.
    • Do not shake the formicarium, do not move the ants unnecessarily.
    • Do not forget to feed the ants correctly and on time. You can pamper arthropods with sweet syrup or seeds (universal food for any species).
    • Maintain the farm regularly. Without proper care, food or high humidity, the colony will decrease significantly.
    • Don’t forget to clean your home. Remains of food, garbage and other waste accumulate in the compartments. Beginners are advised to use tweezers when cleaning, and place ants in test tubes or separate containers.
    • Move the ants carefully, using an exhauster (a device for gently moving small insects) is the correct option. Some species of these insects are able to spit out poison.

    By following these rules, you will provide your little pets with a long and comfortable existence.

    Questions and Answers

    Which type should I choose for my first move-in?

    For beginners, representatives from the myrmicin family are excellent. These are the most evolutionarily developed groups. It is interesting to watch them – insects have a clear classification according to castes and professions.

    When do I need to bring food?

    Hungry members of the insect family are almost always waiting for you. First of all, food goes to the uterus and larvae, and then to simple hard workers. To correctly calculate the portion, follow their movements – when the ants stop showing interest in food and pass it on to the uterus, the meal is over. Untouched food can be removed.

    I got bitten! What to do?

    For ant farms, they offer insects with not the most toxic poison, so nothing threatens health. Most often, formic acid causes redness on the skin or burning on the mucous membrane if it gets into the eyes. To soothe, a baby cream or soothing lotion is suitable.

    I’m new! How can I care for the formicarium so that the ants live long?

    An ant queen can live for more than 20 years, simple hard workers – 2-3 years. By providing comfortable conditions for the queen, you will be able to enjoy an artificial anthill for almost a quarter of a century.

    One ant died on the farm – is it contagious?

    During relocation, insects are stressed, so the death of 1-2 individuals is not a serious disease. Also, workers often die from old age, from overpopulation.

    Several ants ran away, what should I do: look for them or forget them?

    In the colony there are often scouts who go out to inspect the area. But to create a full-fledged ant family, they need a uterus. If such daredevils do not return after 3-4 days, then they have already died.

    How to choose the right ant farm?

    Many artificial anthills! There are for long-term maintenance (gypsum, sand, vertical and horizontal) and for short-term (helium).

    Beginners are advised to purchase an acrylic farm first to try their hand at getting to know the insects better. Such formicaria are designed for 1-1.5 years.

    In the future, the colony will grow and you will need to connect additional passages. For long-term keeping of ants, you can choose a convenient and practical anthill with built-in compartments, a well-thought-out humidification system and a large arena.
