Eyes of Wonder

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2017

Merry Christmas from the Institute for Creation Research! Some of my favorite memories of Christmas surround my children and grandchildren. It’s always fun to watch their faces as they open gifts and discover something new underneath all the wrapping. The gift is always worth the price to see their eyes of wonder.

What if we looked at God’s blessings that way? With the eyes of a child—with eager anticipation, delight, and even wonder. Have you paused long enough to look at God’s gifts with fresh eyes lately?

Consider His great love for us—how He loved us so much that He sent His Son to die for our sin so we can enjoy a relationship with Him forever. Do we live each day anticipating His presence throughout the day? The details of our daily lives are stamped with His goodness—have you noticed? We can search the Scriptures for a new gem of truth tucked away, and we can anticipate a new discovery every time we open His Word. Our days would probably be different if we delighted in His great grace with every step. How He blesses us when we least deserve it!

Consider His great love for us—how He loved us so much that He sent His Son to die for our sin so we can enjoy a relationship with Him forever.

Do we look with awe at His creation? Perhaps we’ve become so accustomed to His masterpiece that we fail to notice the grandeur of this world. His majesty drips from the trees, and His splendor calls with the wind. If we see His creation with eyes of wonder, we’ll recognize His handiwork in the stars and His dignity in the eyes of a child. How great is our God!

In this issue, we take a fresh look at the many wonders in God’s divine design. ICR Science Writer Brian Thomas marvels at the many ways ICR’s recent research confirms the Bible: “[Our] calling would be very difficult indeed if science verified molecules-to-man evolution instead of creation. But thanks be to God that His world matches His Word time after time” (“The Gospel and ICR”). Frank Sherwin examines the wonders of “The Created Placenta,” and Dr. Randy Guliuzza describes how racecar drivers display God’s incredible engineering with their coordinated feats (“Beauty in Motion: Formula 1 Drivers”). All of these revelations of God’s power and wisdom in creation are gifts to us, and we can see them clearly if we keep our eyes open.

If we see His creation with eyes of wonder, we’ll recognize His handiwork in the stars and His dignity in the eyes of a child. How great is our God!

Our Lord provides for our needs and requires nothing in return—He understands how feeble our efforts are and how our righteousness falls far short of any repayment. And, yet, He gives. We enjoy the fruit of our God’s goodness, and He delights in the wonder in our eyes.

As you read Acts & Facts, please know that we have prayed for you. We ask God to use every resource we develop to provide a deeper understanding about our Creator and to equip you to share His truth with others. We’ve asked God to draw you to Him, to reveal His truth, and to let you see His wondrous works in creation.

This Christmas, we hope you will celebrate Christ’s birth with renewed vision. As Henry Morris IV reminds us, “He is so much more than a babe in a manger; He is the very Creator Himself.”

Sitting in The Coffee Bar yesterday, staring off ahead of me, my eyes shifted into focus and there right in front of me was an answer. I have a chance to choose my own adventure. There is a calmness to order–to a structured, consistent existence. Most of my life has been lived by this mantra, in clear and deliberate chapters. I’m scrubbing the last of the dinner dishes while you sit out on the porch.

Sunlight is trading places with nightfall, and you’re savoring every last drop before it’s time for bed. I hear the pitter-patter of your little feet, and then you shout through the open sliding door, “Mama! I can see the moon! I wish I could go up into the sky and touch it.”

What a simple, very toddler-like, thing for you to say . . . but it stopped me in my tracks. How long has it been since I felt so excited about something so utterly simple and innocent as the moon?

At just barely three years old, you’re still filled with the most beautiful sense of wonder. It’s the kind that has an expiration date—like a favorite blankie or an old, forgotten teddy bear tucked away on the top shelf of a dusty closet. It’s a gift that never seems to last long enough, a part of early childhood that stays rooted there as we grow older and our understanding of the world grows heavier.

But son, of all the things I pray you’ll cling to in this life, that fire in your eyes is at the very top of my list.

I hope you never lose that spark.

I hope you never stop learning and you’re always as curious as you are right here in this season.

When disappointment comes knocking, I hope it will only push you harder in the pursuit of your dreams.

I hope you’ll hold fast to your zest for this grand adventure we’re living.

I hope you never stop viewing the world around you as if it’s new every morning—and reminding me of the same. May you never stop looking at each day as an opportunity to be happy.

RELATED: Toddlers Are Human Too—And Sometimes They Just Need Grace

I hope you’ll always see things a little bit differently than others do and know that your unique perspective is what makes you such a treasure.

In a world that will do its best to convince you it’s impossible to grow up and still believe in magic . . . I hope you’ll call that bluff.

It’s my deepest wish that you’ll hold on to the excitement I let go of somewhere along the way—the excitement you’re helping me find again now that I get to be your mama.

Work hard in this life, sweet boy, but please don’t lose that spark of wonder in your eyes.

And never, ever stop dreaming of the night when you can finally reach into the sky and touch the moon.

This sweet book full of wishes will always be one of our favorite bedtime stories to share with our littles.

I gained a bit of insight today. We were walking past the checkout at the store this afternoon when we came upon a mom and her children, waiting in the checkout line.   RELATED: A Simple Invitation Means the World To a Special Needs Parent My daughter Chloe rolled by them in her wheelchair. I watched, as I often do, as the children noticed her. One girl about Chloe’s age smiled at her as we walked by. Promposals are cute.  But, even for the sweetest questions, it’s okay if the answer is not yes. I have more boys than girls at my house so the whole meet the boy asking your girl out with a gun posts don’t sit well with me. Boys and girls have an equally hard time negotiating friendships and relationships in high school, and I care equally for both. We’re nearing the end of club baseball/softball season, and the burnout is real. The time away from home, burning through gas to get somewhere for two hours with half your house packed only to pack back up and turn around and drive to the next two-hour destination is insane. I don’t even like the sport right now. There . . . I said it. I’m so sick of softball fields and wind-blown dirt in my face. I’ve seen so many balls thrown in the last two months that my eyes hurt. I took the girls to one of our favorite coffee shops last week and all around me were parents of babies and toddlers. Their little ones ran about in the grassy area out back, toddling up and down the lawn, when it suddenly hit me with perfect clarity—the sun has nearly set on this season for me. It was a realization marked by internal tension, a mourning of the loss of one season contrasted by the joyful anticipation at the arrival of the next. It came out of nowhere and hit me like a tidal wave. Having five kids in…

When I was pregnant with his baby sister, Forest kissed my belly and talked about all the wonderful things he would do with this little girl he already loved so much. His plans changed, however, after she was born, and the thing he wanted to do the most with her was place her gently in the trash can. Some mornings he would kiss her softly, other mornings he would walk into the room where I’d be nursing her and say, “Her doesn’t look precious to ME.” Two and a half years later, Forest’s feelings toward Grace remain about the same….

YOU HAVE REMINDED ME AGAIN THAT, FOR ME, KNOWING BECOMES KNOWLEDGE, WHICH BECOMES THE PRACTICE OF THAT KNOWLEDGE. EVEN THIS IS BECOMING A PRACTICE. PLEASE COMMENT.

KNOWING always becomes knowledge — and you have to be alert not to allow it. One of the most delicate situations on the path of a seeker: knowing always becomes knowledge — because the moment you have known something, your mind collects it as knowledge, as experience. Knowing is a process. Knowledge is a conclusion. When knowing dies it becomes knowledge. And if you go on gathering this knowledge, then knowing will become more and more difficult — because with knowledge, knowing never happens. Then you carry your knowledge around you. A knowledgeable person is almost hidden behind his knowledge; he loses all clarity, all perception. The world becomes far away; the reality loses all transparency.

The knowledgeable person is always looking through his knowledge. He projects his knowledge. His knowledge colors everything — now there is no longer any possibility of knowing. Remember: knowledge is not gathered only through scriptures — it is also gathered, and more so, through your own experience. You love a woman, for example. You have never known a woman before, have never fallen in deep love. You fall for the first time — you are innocent, you are a virgin. You don’t know what love is — your mind is open. You don’t have any knowledge about love. You are spontaneous. You move into the unknown. It is mysterious. Love opens doors of unknown temples, sings unknown songs into your ears and into your heart, dances with unknown tunes. And you don’t know anything; you don’t have any knowledge to judge by, to evaluate, to condemn, to say good or bad. It is ecstatic. You are gripped by the ineffable experience of love. You live in moments of grace.

But, by and by, you become knowledgeable — now you know what love means; now you know what the woman means; now you know the geography, the topography of love. You have become knowledgeable. You fall in love with another woman. Now, nothing like the first experience happens — nothing like it. Dull. A repetition. As if you have gone to see the same movie again, or reading the same novel again. A little difference here and there, but not much. Now, why are you missing? Why is the same mysterious experience not gripping you? Why are you not throbbing with the unknown again? You are knowledgeable. Something so beautiful like love has become a repetition.

Knowing always becomes knowledge. So you have to be very alert: know something — the moment it becomes knowledge, drop it. Go on dying to your knowledge.

Never carry it — because no other woman is the same. Your first woman was a totally different world; this new woman you have fallen in love with is a totally different world. It is not going to be the same. But if you move through knowledge it will look like the same. Drop the knowledge. Be again innocent. Again move into the unknown — because no two persons are alike. Every person is so unique that there has never been a person like that before and there will never be again. Learn again from A B C and you will be full of wonder. And then you have learnt a deep experience: never allow any knowledge to settle.

All knowing becomes knowledge. The moment it becomes knowledge, drop it. It is just like dust gathers on the mirror; every day you have to clean it. On the mirror of your mind dust gathers, dust of experience: it becomes knowledge. Clean it. That’s why every day meditation is needed. Meditation is nothing but cleaning the mirror of your mind. Clean it continuously! If you can clean it every moment of your life, then there is no need to sit separately for meditation.

Remember, be alert that knowledge has not to be gathered, that you have to remain like a child — full of wonder, full of awe. Every nook and corner is mysterious, and you don’t know what it is. You cannot figure it out, what this life is. Enchanted you run in this direction and that direction.

Have you watched a child running on the sea-beach? So elated! in such euphoria! collecting shells and colored stones. Have you watched a child running in a garden to catch a butterfly? You will not run that way even if God is there; you will not run that way. You will not be so ecstatic even if God is there. You will move like a gentleman. You will not rush, you will not be mad. You will still keep your manners; you will still show that you are mature, you are not a child. And Jesus says: “Only those who are childlike, they will be able to enter into my Kingdom of God” — only those who are childlike, only those who are still capable of wonder.

Wonder is the greatest treasure in life. Once you lose wonder, you have lost your life — then you drag, but you no longer live. And knowledge kills wonder.

That is one of the most difficult problems the modern mind is facing, because knowledge has accumulated every day more and more.

The twentieth century is so much burdened with knowledge.

Hence religion has disappeared — because religion can exist only with wonder, with wonder-filled eyes; eyes which don’t know but are ready to rush into any direction to see what is there; innocent eyes, virgin hearts. So remember to remain capable of childlike wonder.

Science grows out of doubt. Religion grows out of wonder. Between the two is philosophy; it has not yet decided — it goes on hanging between doubt and wonder. Sometimes the philosopher doubts and sometimes the philosopher wonders: he is just in between. If he doubts too much, by and by he becomes a scientist. If he wonders too much, by and by he becomes religious.

That’s why philosophy is disappearing from the world — because ninety-nine percent of philosophers have become scientists. And one person — a Buber somewhere, or a Krishnamurti somewhere, or a Suzuki somewhere — great minds, great penetrating intellects, they have become religious. Philosophy is almost losing its ground. If you become too sceptical, you become scientists. If you become too childlike, you become religious. Science exists with doubt. Religion exists with wonder. If you want to be religious then create more wonder, discover more wonder. Allow your eyes to be more filled with wonder than anything else.

Be surprised by everything that is happening. Everything is so tremendously wonderful that it is simply unbelievable how you go on living without dancing, how you go on living without becoming ecstatic. You must not be seeing what is happening all around. Just to be is so miraculous, just to breathe is so miraculous. Just to breathe and just to be! — nothing else is needed for a religious person. To be full of wonder. And when one is full of wonder, praise arises, and praise is prayer. When you see this wonderful existence, you start praising it. In your praising, prayer arises.

You say: “Holy, holy, holy! ” It is holy. It is so beautiful and so holy.

So the questioner has raised a very pertinent question: “You have reminded me again that, for me, knowing becomes knowledge, which becomes the practice of that knowledge.” These are the three steps. First knowing; then the knowing dies, shrinks, becomes knowledge; then knowledge also shrinks even more and becomes practice or character. A man of character is the deadliest man in the world. He practices his knowledge; he tries to follow his knowledge. He is not spontaneous. He is continuously managing, manipulating, pushing himself this way and that; somehow holding himself together. He is not responsible — responsible in the sense of being capable of response. If you come across him, if you embrace him, he will answer it, but that answer will come out of his past experiencing — out of his character. A man of character is predictable. Only a mechanism can be predictable. A fully conscious man is unpredictable. No astrologer can predict anything about a fully conscious man. He moves moment-to-moment, full of wonder. He acts out of wonder; he acts out of response to the moment. He carries no knowledge, he carries no character with him. Each moment he is new, reborn.

So these are the three steps: knowing dies; knowing becomes knowledge; knowledge becomes character. Be aware — beware! Don’t allow your knowing to fall and to become knowledge. And never allow your knowledge to control you and to create a character for you. A character is an armour. In the armour you are jailed… then you can never be spontaneous. You are already in your grave — a character is a grave. Let your knowing be there, but don’t allow it to become knowledge or character. The moment it is turning into knowledge, drop it, empty your hands. Forget all about it. Move ahead! again like a child. Difficult, I know. Easy to say; difficult to be that way — but that is the only way you can attain to satchitanand — you can attain to truth, you can attain to consciousness, you can attain to bliss.

Yes, it is hard. One has to pay too much for it — but

God is not cheap. You will have to pay with your whole being. Only when you have paid totally and you are not holding anything and you are not a miser, and you have sacrificed and surrendered yourself totally, will you attain. God comes to you when you are not; when you have become just a zero God comes to you. He is just waiting by the corner. The moment you become empty, He rushes towards you, He comes and fulfills you.

Don’t allow knowing to become knowledge and character. Then a totally different type of character will arise which will not be like the character you have seen in the world. It will be inner — a discipline which comes from the innermost core of your being. Never forced! — always spontaneous. It is not like a commandment: it is an organic growth. God is your spontaneous organic growth.

Today’s Wonder of the Day was inspired by Alix from Lincoln. Alix Wonders, “How do our eyes make us see?” Thanks for WONDERing with us, Alix!

Have you ever gone on a long road trip with your family? Stopping at neat locations along the way is so much fun, but the hours and hours on interstate highways in between stops can get a bit boring.

Many kids play games with their friends and family members to pass the time. Have you ever played license plate bingo? It can be a challenge to spot as many different states’ license plates as possible during your journey.

Or maybe you prefer to play “I Spy.” You might say, “I spy with my little eye…something red!” Then it’s up to your friends and family members to guess whether you’re talking about the stop sign, the fire truck, the cool little red Corvette, or something else entirely.

Playing “I Spy” makes you think about how incredible your eyes are. They can look around in all directions, focusing on things near and far in mere milliseconds. They’re on the job, helping you experience the world around you from the time you wake up until you go to sleep.

But exactly how do they make you see? What parts of the eye do what jobs? How are they able to do things the world’s most technologically-advanced cameras can’t do?

Human sight is all about light. That may seem obvious, since it’s nearly impossible to see things in the dark. But it’s light reflecting off objects and entering the eye that allows us to see them.

When light bounces off an object in your field of vision and enters the eye, it first penetrates a thin layer of tears that cover the eye’s clear outer layer called the cornea. The cornea helps to focus the light as it enters the eye.

On the other side of the cornea is a liquid substance called the aqueous humor. This fluid maintains the proper pressure inside the eye. After the aqueous humor, light passes through the pupil, which is the round opening in the iris that you otherwise know as the colored part of your eye.

The iris changes the size of the pupil to adjust the amount of light it lets in. When it’s dark, the iris makes the pupil larger to let as much light as possible in to help you see. When it’s bright out, though, the iris makes the pupil smaller to reduce the amount of light entering to prevent damage to the eye.

After light passes through the pupil, it moves through the lens. The lens focuses the light onto the retina, which is the back surface of the eye. The retina is kind of like the screen in a movie theater or the film in a camera.

Ligaments inside the eye change the shape of the lens to keep light focused properly on the retina. Sometimes, however, our eyes need extra help. That’s why some people wear glasses that help to bend light so that it’s perfectly focused on the retina.

When light hits the retina, it activates photoreceptors called rods and cones. These special nerve cells convert light into electrochemical signals. Those electrical impulses then travel to the brain along the optic nerve.

The image the brain receives from the eyes is actually upside-down. The brain turns the image around as it processes it, so that we see things as they really are.

Although it may seem like a simple process, the coordination of all the different parts of the eye along with the optic nerve and the brain requires countless adjustments that happen in milliseconds as we look around.

If you think about all that is happening as you look at something as small as a human hair and then look into the sky at something as large and far away as the Moon, you’ll realize what amazing organs your eyes really are!

Mydriasis – pupil dilation. Symptoms of mydriasis, at what lesion occurs. Drug-induced mydriasis

Mydriasis is pupil dilation. Symptoms of mydriasis, at what lesion occurs. Drug-induced mydriasis

midriaz

Mydriasis is the dilation of the pupil under the influence of stimuli. The process is provided by relaxation of the visual sphincter – a circular muscle responsible for the narrowing of the pupil. Physiological mydriasis occurs reflexively, for example, when lighting becomes worse, or if a person looks into the distance. Mydriasis is characteristic of states of stress and fear (remember the proverb “Fear has big eyes”?), As well as surprise, joy, euphoria.

The main difference between physiological mydriasis and other varieties is that pupil dilation is always temporary. As soon as the stimulus disappears (the lighting becomes brighter, the person calms down), the pupil diameter again approaches the norm – 2-4 mm. Another symptom of pathological mydriasis is uneven pupillary dilation.

What causes mydriasis

Pupil dilation is called pathological mydriasis if there are no natural pathogens to trigger the reaction. This condition can be caused by external or internal factors. Depending on the cause of the manifestation of the pathology, mydriasis is divided into:

Pathology name

Description

Traumatic Such mydriasis occurs when the eye is affected, such as contusion. In this case, the pupil expands to 7-10 mm and does not react to light. It can also be caused by eye surgery.
Paralytic The pupil dilates due to paralysis of the sphincter of the pupil. Mydriasis occurs when the nucleus or root of the oculomotor nerve is damaged, pathologies of the central nervous system, an acute attack of glaucoma. Paralytic mydriasis is also observed in case of poisoning with cocaine, quinine, carbon dioxide.
Spastic It is caused by a spasm of the pupillary dilator – the muscle responsible for pupil dilation. The cause may be irritation of the cervical sympathetic trunk, damage to the brain or spinal cord. Spastic mydriasis is also observed in some pathologies of the heart, gastrointestinal tract, lungs, and thyroid gland.
medical The cause of drug-induced mydriasis is the effect of a drug. Means with atropine, scopolamine, tropicamide and other substances in the composition are used. Such drops are instilled by ophthalmologists to study the visual apparatus or before surgery.

Mydriasis and miosis (pathological reduction in the size of the pupil) can be symptoms of such dangerous diseases as meningitis, multiple sclerosis, encephalitis, brain tumor, diabetes mellitus. That is why the condition when the pupils are of different sizes cannot be ignored: the sooner you see a doctor, the higher the chances of stopping the disease in the early stages.

A person with mydriasis of the pupil complains of a cloudy image, a feeling of a film on the eye, and difficulty with focusing. Depending on the causes of the pathology, the symptoms can be supplemented:

  • nausea and vomiting;
  • headache;
  • lethargy, fatigue;
  • lacrimation;
  • pain in the eyes;
  • sensation of a foreign body in the eye, etc.

Eye mydriasis diagnostics

The first thing an ophthalmologist is convinced of is that pupil dilation is not physiological. Further examinations include:

  • checking the visual organs with an ophthalmoscope;
  • CT or MRI of the brain;
  • neurosonography;
  • Ultrasound of cerebral vessels;
  • lumbar puncture;
  • general analysis of blood and urine, etc.

If the problem is not only of an ophthalmological, but also of a neurological nature, the patient must be sent to an appointment with a neurologist.

Treatment of mydriasis

Unilateral or bilateral mydriasis caused by medication resolves within 24 hours. If the pupil has not narrowed, miotic drugs are prescribed.

In other cases, treatment is aimed at eliminating the underlying disease. For example, in an acute attack of glaucoma, drugs are prescribed that narrow intraocular pressure and normalize blood circulation, as well as drops that narrow the pupil. If these funds do not help, an operation is prescribed. To eliminate mydriasis in case of damage to the nucleus of the oculomotor nerve caused by an aneurysm, an operation is performed to eliminate the aneurysmal sac pressing on the nerve trunk. With cerebral edema, drugs are used that drain excess fluid.

The prognosis for pathological mydriasis in most cases depends on how timely treatment is started. For example, the sooner the factors affecting the nerves are eliminated, the faster and more efficiently they will recover.

Veronika Golovchits

In Lesosibirsk, an exhibition of the Krasnoyarsk Masters of the Krasnoyarsk regional competition of folk craftsmen has opened. We talked with artists about rare techniques and the demand for needlework these days.

Embroidery

The youngest participant of the exhibition, Tatyana Emelyanova, showed new horizons of embroidery: unique brooches with embroidered eyes, flowers and birds are now ordered by residents of large cities of Russia and beyond.

I was inspired by the work of one artist who is engaged in embroidery on clothes. Her work hooked me so much that I bought some thread and started embroidering flowers on my shirt. Then I realized that embroidery on clothes takes a lot of time, and I decided to come up with something more mobile, so I came up with a brooch.

Gradually, I started instagram, and brooches began to be bought from all regions of our country. I was very surprised, because after only three months of work, orders for brooches began to come from Moscow, the Moscow region, Chelyabinsk and even from America.

Patchwork

Patchwork or patchwork – “patchwork” has existed for a very long time, back in the 17th century the Old Believers made patchwork rugs. Today, this type of needlework is in great demand due to its brightness and originality.

I have been making patchwork bedspreads for over 15 years, mostly as gifts for the family, because I have seven children and twelve grandchildren. It is not possible to create products to order. Basically, people ask to repeat exactly the finished bedspread, but this is impossible. There are no two identical products in this technique, – said master Tatyana Tokareva.

The meaning of patchwork is simple — according to the mosaic principle, artists sew pieces of fabric and patches into a single product: bedspreads, bags, potholders and backpacks. At the same time, many add to the canvases and appliqué elements.

Grass weaving

Perhaps this is the most ancient type of needlework, today it is especially rare, but the artist Nadezhda Mikhailova continues to create herbal bow bowls and toys.

I worked at the Spiridonovsky Center for the Detention of the Disabled, where I conducted creative classes. The most readily available material is grass and hay, so the idea to engage in grass weaving came by itself. To make a bird or a horse, you just need to crumple the grass and secure with linen threads. It’s all simple, but every woman sculpts something from the dough with her kids. It’s the same here – only instead of dough you take hay.

Caps: picture in picture

Caps are growths on a tree that are carefully cut and dried to create an unusual canvas for painting. According to the artists, this is a rare direction in which it is not always necessary to use paints – many burls already contain a natural landscape, the artist only needs to notice this.

The natural texture of growths on a tree is also used by artists for landscapes on birch bark to create three-dimensional paintings.

Felting, carving and painting

The Folk Art Center helped to revive many techniques through master classes in the regional creative workshop “The Living Spring of Crafts”. Krasnoyarsk craftsmen Nina Ivanova and Tatyana Vysotskaya taught wet felting and patchwork — the participants felted bracelets and hats, sewed patchwork purses. In addition, the Yenisei craftsman Irina Topchieva taught geometric wood carving and helped to make hot coasters in the form of horses with a linen mane.

Another master class on folk painting was held in Lesosibirsk by Sergey Vasilkeev, head of the amateur studio of artists of the GorDK.

Gorodets painting is a more accessible and understandable technique, but unlike Khokhloma and Mezen painting, where accuracy is needed, it is very good in the learning process. The drawing here is created from a large spot to smaller details, thus honing the sequence, the correct holding of the brush, – Sergey notes.

The leaders of the circles of the north of the region will pass on the acquired knowledge and techniques to their students.

About synonyms

Without the words of synonyms in texts of various nature, whether it be narration, reasoning, motivation, it is impossible to overcome the unjustified repetition of the same word. Also, the use of synonymous words instead of (in surprise) to open the mouth (eyes) is used in literature as a way to link adjacent sentences in the text. In the style of Russian literature, when a text is written, the repetition of the same words is identified as a tautology and is a gross lexical error. Thus, when presenting the text at the initial stage, one of the keywords of the synonym is used, and further along the text, synonyms that are suitable in meaning are already used, revealing and reinforcing the theme of the text for a broader presentation.

For example, the original word “(in surprise) open your mouth (eyes)”, further, depending on the necessary applicability, is replaced by surprised.

Do not forget that in terms of their qualities, synonyms can be applied using the prefix “not” to antonyms, words that are opposite in meaning. At the same time, the lexical meaning of the formed word of the antonym with the prefix is not also characterized as a synonym.

The word is characterized as a synonym and polysemantic words that form a complex word combination of words in their polysemy according to the lexical meaning of one of the words of the proposed synonym in the context.

In conclusion, I would like to emphasize the most important role synonyms play in people’s speech. The use of synonymous words and the ability to use additional resources in the form of dictionaries makes it possible not only to express one’s thoughts in the most accurate and diverse way, but also leads to the enrichment and saturation of our native Russian language.

📖 Eyebrows, What surprise looks like, CHAPTER 3. Surprise. Recognize a liar by the expression on his face. Ekman P. Page 20. Read online

We use photographs of two people, Patricia and John, to demonstrate typical facial expressions. Appendix I describes the goals we set for ourselves in taking these photographs, how they were obtained and who these people are.

Each of the three parts of the face expressing surprise has its own external characteristics. Eyebrows go up, eyes go wide, jaws open, and then lips part.

Eyebrows

Eyebrows are curved and raised. On fig. In Figure 4 you see Patricia’s surprised eyebrows (B) and her normal or neutral eyebrows (A). The skin under raised eyebrows is stretched and more visible than usual (arrow 1). Raising the eyebrows results in long horizontal wrinkles on the forehead (arrow 2). These wrinkles do not appear in everyone. They are absent in most young children, even when the eyebrows are raised, and are sometimes absent in adults as well. Some people have horizontal lines—grooves that are permanently present on the skin of the face—even when the eyebrows are still, but these lines usually appear in middle age. If these permanent wrinkles are present on a neutral face, they become even deeper and more noticeable when the eyebrows rise in surprise.

Figure 4

Although a person who is surprised usually not only raises eyebrows, but also opens eyes wide and jaw drops, raised eyebrows can also be observed on a neutral face. In such cases, the facial expression no longer reflects the emotion; it takes on other meanings, some of which may be related to surprise. On fig. 5 you see surprised eyebrows on a neutral face (B) and a completely neutral face (A). When the eyebrows are held in a raised position for a few seconds, this facial expression becomes a emblem doubt or question. Often this is what a person does when he listens to what someone else is saying to him; in this way he expresses without words a question or doubt about what he is told. The question or doubt may or may not be serious; often such an emblem expresses ironic doubt, skepticism or surprise of the listener about the words spoken. If this is complemented by a movement of the head to the side or back, we observe a mute exclamation. If, however, the eyebrows raised in surprise are complemented by a mouth twisted in a grimace of disgust, then the emblem takes on a slightly different meaning – skeptical disbelief or, if a person begins to shake his head back and forth, an incredulous mute exclamation (see Fig. 28).

Figure 5

5 reveals something else that is very important when considering facial expressions. Patricia appears to show doubt all over her face, but this photo is a composite. Raised eyebrows are just part of the redesigned previously neutral face shown in the left photo. If you cover her eyebrows with your hand, you will see for yourself. Despite the existence of many facial expressions, a change in only one area gives the impression that the rest of the facial features have also changed.

If surprised eyebrows are held in a raised state for a very short time, this may indicate other meanings. If the lifting of the eyebrows is accompanied by a tilt of the head, or a slight movement of the head up and down, then we observe an emblem of salutation called the lifting of the eyebrows; such an emblem, found in Melanesia, was called by one researcher universal. A quick eyebrow raise can also be used as a colloquial “punctuation mark”. When a person says something, they can quickly raise and lower their eyebrows to emphasize a particular word or phrase. Facial expressions emphasize the spoken words, much like italics do in typed text. Other movements of the eyebrows and movements of other parts of the face are also used as “punctuation marks”, which we will definitely talk about later.

Eyes

Surprised face with eyes wide open, lower eyelids relaxed and upper eyelids raised. On fig. 6 (left) Patricia and John have wide eyes in surprise; for comparison, their eyes are shown on the right side of the picture with a neutral facial expression. Note that in a state of surprise, narrow stripes of the whites of the eyes – the sclera – become visible between the upper eyelid and the iris (colored in the central part of the eye). The sclera may also be visible below the iris, but this depends on how deep the eyes are set and whether the lower jaw is lowered low enough to pull the skin under the eyes. Thus, when you see white below the iris, it is not as reliable an indicator of surprise as the appearance of sclera between the upper eyelid and the iris.

Figure 6

Surprised eyes are usually accompanied by surprised eyebrows, a surprised mouth, or both, but sometimes they appear on their own. When the upper eyelids lift, showing the sclera, in the absence of a corresponding change in the positions of the eyebrows and mouth, this movement is almost always short-lived and lasts a small fraction of a second. Such open eyes can serve as a reflection of an instantaneous interest, or as an addition or replacement, for example, for such a word as “Great!” Wide eyes can also be used as colloquial “punctuation marks” to emphasize a particular spoken word.

Lower face

In a moment of surprise, the lower jaw drops, causing the teeth to open and the lips to part. On fig. 7 shows that the mouth, slightly open in surprise, is relaxed, not tense; lips are not closed and not pulled back. Instead, the mouth looks like it opened naturally. The mouth may be only slightly open, moderately open, as shown in fig. 7, or more widely disclosed, and this degree of disclosure depends on how strong the surprise is. We will give an example of such variations below.

Figure 7

The jaw can be lowered without any movement of the rest of the face. On fig. 8 shows a face in which surprise is reflected only in its lower part in the form of a lowered jaw, and for comparison, the same face is shown in a neutral state. The point of dropping the jaw is to express astonishment. Jaw dropping might have happened if Patricia had actually been stunned by something; it can serve as an emblem if Patricia wants to state that she was stunned at some point in the past; or it can be used to give a fake expression to her face when she wants to act stunned. Figures 8 and 5 show how a change in one part of the face leads to a complete change in the expression of the entire face. Take a look at the eye area in Fig. 8B: A little more surprise seems to be expressed than in fig. 8A. But it’s also a composite photograph; if you cover the mouth areas in both images with your hand, you will see that the eyes and eyebrows – forehead in both photos are the same.

Figure 8

From slight surprise to extreme

The face being experienced differs in its intensity, and reflects these variations. Although there are slight changes in the eyebrows (raise a little) and eyes (widen and open a little wider), the main indicator of the intensity of surprise is the lower part of the face. On fig. 9A shows mild surprise, and Fig. 9B – moderate surprise. Eyebrows and eyes look the same in both photos; only the level of lowering of the jaw changes. The stronger the surprise, the wider the mouth opens. Displays of extreme surprise are often accompanied by exclamations like “Oh” or “Whoa.”

Drawing 9

Four types of surprise

Surprise can be expressed through only two areas of the face, while the third area remains neutral. Each face, in which surprise appears in two parts, has its own somewhat special meaning. On fig. 10 shows four types of surprise. But before we get into explanations of what message we think each of these faces is conveying and how differences in facial appearance shape these different messages, take a look at each of these photographs and ask yourself, “What message is that?” and: “How does this person differ in appearance from other faces?”

10A Patricia shows an interrogative surprise that is rather vague. This facial expression could be accompanied, for example, by such words as: “Is that so?” or “Oh, really?” It is exactly the same as shown in Fig. 10D, with the only difference that in Fig. The 10G surprised mouth has been replaced with a neutral one. If you put your fingers over the mouth areas of the faces shown in fig. 10A and 10D, you will see that these faces are identical in everything except the shape of the mouth. Surprise looks interrogative when the expression of surprise on the face is created only by the movements of the eyebrows and eyes.

10B Patricia shows surprise that has reached amazement. This facial expression may be accompanied by words such as “What?” or sounds like “Ah” made at the same time as a quick breath. If you cover the eyebrows and forehead with your fingers in the faces shown in fig. 10B and 10D, you will see that these faces are identical in every way, except for the closed parts – the eyebrow and forehead areas. Surprise reaches astonishment when it is expressed on the face only through the movements of the eyes and mouth.

D

10B Patricia shows a surprise that is closer to stunned, or less interested surprise, or the surprise that an internally devastated or drugged person can express on the face. If you close your eyes to Fig. 10V and 10D, you will see that everything is the same on them, except for the eyes. Surprise looks like bewilderment when it is expressed only by the movements of the eyebrows and mouth.

10D shows the expression of surprise created using the elements of all three areas of the face. The meaning of the message spread by such a person lies in one word – surprise.

How emotions are reflected in us. Why do our hands “itch” in moments of anger and our eyes widen in surprise

Today, perhaps everyone has heard about the concept of emotional intelligence. Psychologist Daniel Goleman is the same person who introduced this concept into circulation. In the book “Emotional Intelligence” – the basics of the basics: what is EQ, how it differs from “ordinary” intelligence and why the owners of the first are often inferior to the owners of the second.

The book has been on the bestseller list since 1995, has been translated into 40 languages and has sold millions of copies. We recently released the 11th edition – with a new translation and additional comments. Goleman clearly explains how EQ works and gives tips to help curb strong emotions.

No less than IQ

The definition of Homo sapiens – a reasonable person – misleads many. Modern science has proven that emotions are as important as cognitive abilities. Yes, and from our own experience we know that we choose with our hearts more often than with our minds.

The intellect is powerless when emotions take over.

Every emotion prepares the body for responses. In a moment of anger, blood rushes to the hands, making it faster and easier to grab a weapon or strike an enemy. The release of hormones, such as adrenaline, provides a boost of energy, which is enough for decisive action.

Emotional intelligence
A person who has experienced fear turns pale. This occurs as a result of the outflow of blood from the head (feeling that the blood “freezes in the veins”). The body becomes numb, giving time to assess the situation and decide whether it is better to quickly hide in a secluded place.

In ancient times, instant emotions could provide a decisive advantage and a chance for survival. There is no such need these days.

By raising your eyebrows in surprise, you increase the space covered by the gaze, and more light enters the retina. As a result, the brain is able to collect more information about the unexpected event in order to develop the best course of action.

Feelings don’t have to be fought, they have to be managed. Every emotion is needed and important.

Childhood memories

The first emotional reactions in a child’s life remain with him forever. They take root even before the baby can express feelings in words. That is why it is so important who and how takes care of the child in the first years of life.

Reactions – those that come from childhood – do not leave us in adulthood.

The amygdala can react by going mad with rage or fear before the cortex knows what’s going on: the raw emotion is triggered independently of and ahead of thinking. Our explosive emotions remain unknown to us, and we continue to succumb to them.

The myth of emotional discharge

You may have heard the following opinion: in order for an emotion to let go, you need to let it go, that is, do not hold yourself back. However, research shows that this is not always the case.

Strong emotions impel to action: I want to scream, stomp, throw objects that come to hand. If you “indulge” anger, you will inflame yourself even more and may fall into an indomitable rage. You will fall into a funnel from which it is difficult to get out.

It is easy to draw an analogy with nature: let the wind pick up and there will be a hurricane

Our task is to influence the duration of the emotion. Do you realize that you are annoyed or angry? Switch. Tell yourself that you will come back to thinking about the situation later.

Ineffective ways to cope with sadness

Sadness is another emotional state that we strive to get rid of as soon as possible. However, sometimes sadness is necessary. When a person experiences a loss or is trying to cope with a major loss, sadness causes them to “take a break” to process what has happened. It helps to adapt to new realities.

At the same time, it is important not to slip into depression. In order not to feel worse, you need to be able to cope with a depressed mood. Here are the mistakes we most often make.

  • privacy

Usually it only adds to sadness a feeling of loneliness, disunity with people, and does not help.

  • crying

Reinforces psychic experience and prolongs suffering.

  • Watching TV

Studies show that people tend to be even more depressed after watching a few programs than they were before turning on the TV.

What else

We have two minds: one thinks, the other feels. The book will help you understand the laws by which our “irrational” self (and in fact, very rational) behaves in different areas of life – from family to work.

You will learn how to develop emotional intelligence in children and adults. What to do if you have a psychological trauma or violent temper. How to create a healthy atmosphere in marriage.

Here are some other topics you will find in the book “Emotional Intelligence”:

  • How the brain “produces” emotions
  • Why emotions often outweigh common sense
  • How to deal with “poisonous” thoughts
  • Simple ways to cheer yourself up
  • To inspire yourself and children to study is real
  • How to communicate openly, sincerely and constructively
