Insider analyzed data from H-1B visa applications to estimate how much the tech giant is paying its employees.

The lowest salary the outlet cited was $62,733, and the highest was a whopping $415,000. It does not include stock-based pay.

The data used is accessible to anyone and is from the U.S. Office of Foreign Labor Certification, and the agency provided the organizational divisions for the jobs, the outlet reported.

To bring in skilled workers from overseas, companies can apply to sponsor people through the H-1B visa program. That program specifically requires companies to promise they’re paying the non-U.S. worker similarly to U.S. workers.

Apple has stood apart from the tech layoff bloodbath, exceeding analyst expectations in its most recent quarterly earnings report. The company says it directly employs 80,000 people in the U.S. alone.

Its annual September product event showed a new iPhone model, a new satellite emergency text service, and a new Apple Watch.

Here’s a selection of roles and pay from Insider’s analysis:

  • Apple has performed solidly in an economic slowdown that has hit other tech companies harder.
  • We analyzed thousands of H-1B visa applications to get a sense of how much Apple pays employees.
  • It has one of the strictest tech return-to-office policies, so most of the people are in California.

Apple has performed a lot better than many tech companies during this economic slowdown. And it’s still hiring a lot of new employees — and paying them well.

Although Apple does not share how much it pays workers, it is required to disclose salary offers in work-visa applications submitted to the US Office of Foreign Labor Certification. Insider combed data from the office, which authorizes hiring non-US employees, then publicly releases the information.

The data excludes stock grants that can significantly increase total compensation, but it is a valuable guide to Apple salaries for a variety of positions. Insider dug through the thousands of disclosed salaries that represent engineers, managers, and more.

The iPhone maker has one of the strictest tech return-to-office policies, so more than three-fourths of the second quarter 2022 salaries — over 3,000 applicants — represent workers in California. The highest-paid person in the data set is a senior director who was offered $415,000, while the lowest-paid is a graphic designer who was offered $62,733.

Here’s a breakdown of what Apple pays many other employees. The broad categories are taken from filings by the Office of Foreign Labor Certification. Roles are listed below only if there are at least three candidates.

When you are done checking out the data below, take a look at Insider’s Big Tech salary database to see how much Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook, and other companies pay their workers.

Apple salary negotiation – How to negotiate an Apple job offer

by Josh Doody

The key question to ask about an Apple job offer is “How much flexibility do they have to negotiate my specific offer?” In my experience coaching software developers through Apple salary negotiations, the answer varies from “not much” to “a whole lot”.

Apple tends to make offers that they consider strong, which means a careful negotiation strategy is needed to get them to improve their offer. In-demand engineers with specialties in areas that are crucial to Apple’s business and skills that other firms need can often push harder than generalist engineers.

For example, Apple needs lots engineers with experience in embedded systems, machine learning, and AI, and the supply of experienced engineers in those areas of expertise is relatively tight among the big tech companies. So Apple will offer competitive salaries with some room to negotiate to get quality software engineers with that expertise to join their team.

By contrast, many junior generalist software engineers are eager to join Apple and there is an increasingly large supply of those engineers as more and more people shift into software. So Apple’s offers for more junior engineers are often pretty close to their best offer right out of the gate. That doesn’t mean there’s no room to negotiate, but their offers are tuned to a competitive baseline, so smaller improvements are more typical than larger ones.

The bottom line is that if you have a job offer from Apple in a technical role, you likely have room to negotiate, and may have substantial negotiation leverage depending on your specialty.

What a typical Apple job offer package looks like

Once you finally get through the Apple interview process, you may receive a job offer. Let’s look at an example to see what you can expect.

Apple’s offers are pretty standard:

  • Base salary
  • Sign-on
  • New-Hire Equity

They may also include other components, but these are typically the components with the most flexibility.

Here’s an example taken from a modified version of a real Apple job offer from one of my clients (all numbers are $1,000s). This client was a very experienced software developer with substantial background in embedded systems. This offer is for $210,000 base salary, $400,000 total equity (vesting over four years), and a $100,000 sign-on bonus:

Component Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Total
Base Salary 210 210 210 210 840
Sign-on 100 100
Total Cash 310 210 210 210 940
New-Hire Equity 100 100 100 100 400
Total 410 310 310 310 1,340

Let’s look a little closer at the main components of an Apple job offer.

Base Salary

Base salary is the most stable component of your job offer, and the one you can budget around for the coming year. My clients often focus here first because it’s the most predictable component, and because it impacts their bank account immediately and indefinitely.

Apple’s base salary offers tend to be pretty competitive with, and are often slightly higher than other big tech firms. If you’re wondering whether the salary you’re offered is competitive, blind and levels.fyi are good places to start.

How flexible is Apple on Base Salary?

In my experience, Apple will move on base salary a moderate amount, meaning that they’re not totally rigid on base salary, but that they typically don’t make big moves on base salary. They’re generally more flexible when you have not disclosed salary history or expectations, or when you have a competing offer with a higher base salary (more on this below).

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ask for more base salary, but it means that request may result a modest move in base salary coupled with other more aggressive moves in the other components of the offer.

New-Hire Equity (RSUs)

The equity component of an Apple job offer can range from “not very much” to “Whoa, I had no idea that was possible!” depending on the role and the candidate.

For Apple (and most of the other big public tech companies) I tend to model equity as more or less fungible with base salary since the value of that equity is public and the company fundamentals appear to be pretty strong.

The difference, of course, is that there’s a vesting schedule and you’re taking some level of market risk by counting on equity.

But for a company like Apple, the market risk for equity is very similar to the market risk for your base salary. (If things suddenly get very bad for Apple, their stock would probably drop, but the bigger problem could be that your job might be in jeopardy).

How flexible is Apple on New-Hire Equity (RSUs)?

Potentially extremely flexible. They will sometimes make very big moves with equity to attract the right candidate with the right skillset to a particular role. More generally, they’re moderately flexible on equity, often improving that component by half or more.

Some of my clients have more than doubled their equity through negotiation, which is a fantastic result, but not quite as big an improvement in equity as I’ve seen with some of the other big tech companies. This is most likely because Apple’s salaries tend to be slightly higher, which means they don’t have to be quite as aggressive with equity to offer similar Total Compensation to other big firms.

But equity is still a big lever that Apple will use to persuade well-aligned candidates to join their team.

Sign-on bonus

Even if there’s not a sign-on bonus included with your initial offer, there may be one available through negotiation. Sign-on bonuses, like equity, can range from a low five figures into six figures.

I like to think of the sign-on bonus as a way to help bridge the gap between your first paycheck and your first RSU vesting date.

How flexible is Apple on Sign-on Bonus?

Moderately flexible. They will often use this as a sweetener to close the deal. Five-figure improvements in sign-on bonus are fairly common. I recommend focusing on base salary and equity before negotiating sign-on bonus, but asking for a sign-on bonus to finalize your negotiation will often be a nice later addition to your compensation.

How to approach your Apple salary negotiation

The salary negotiation with Apple will begin earlier than you might expect.

Before you get a job offer

Your Apple recruiter will ask for your salary history, or at least your current salary if it’s legal where they are. Do not tell them your current salary. If you do, the base salary component of your job offer will probably be slightly above your current salary and it will be challenging to negotiate a substantial increase once they make your job offer.

They will also usually ask for your salary expectations. That request will sound something like this:

So what were you hoping for in terms of compensation if you come aboard here at Apple?

Do not tell them your salary expectations because you will essentially be guessing what they might pay someone with your skillset and experience to do the job they need done.

While they might have a good idea of the value of that job to Apple’s business, you would only be guessing. You will practically always guess wrong and cost yourself money later on. So just don’t guess.

Apple will hold on tight to these numbers and it can be very, very challenging to get them to move once they know what they are aiming for. So avoid sharing that information if at all possible.

They may also ask you to tell them about any competing offers you have because they “need more data”. I generally recommend that my clients confirm that they have one or more competing offers while being vague about the details of those offers. It’s ok to mention that other big tech companies are interested, but sharing the specific companies or details of the offers could work against you in the early stages of the negotiation.

Learn more For a deep dive on how to avoid sharing your current or expected salary when asked, see this guide:

How to answer the “What’s your current or expected salary?” question

Once you receive your job offer from Apple

Although Apple is typically only moderately flexible on base salary, I prefer to begin by negotiating base salary to see how flexible they are in the other components. By pushing on base salary—even knowing they aren’t very flexible—you give them an opportunity to show where they are the most flexible.

They will often respond to a request for a higher base salary by moving moderately or not at all on base salary, while suggesting a significantly better equity or sign-on bonus component.

Once they reveal where they’re flexible and how flexible they are, you can use that information to focus the negotiation on the most flexible components to maximize your offer.

What to look out for when negotiating an Apple job offer package

  • Apple will often ask for competing offers—sharing those offers may be beneficial in the later stages of your negotiation. Many companies ask for competing offers to gather data on competitors or to dissuade the “I have lots of offers” bluff that many candidates use. But when Apple is competing with companies like Google and Facebook for candidates, they will often match competing offers if they’re superior.
  • Apple will often respond to a request for higher base salary by slightly improving base salary and significantly improving the equity component or sign-on bonus. This will give you good insight into where they are flexible so you can focus there during the later stages of your negotiation.
  • Apple is often rigid with respect to the “level” offered. Because they use equity as a primary negotiating lever, they have lots of flexibility within pay bands and therefore rarely change pay bands—or levels—as part of the negotiation.
  • For more junior engineers, Apple tends to make competitive offers with less room to negotiate. So many junior engineers want to work at Apple that they don’t need to negotiate very much to get good candidates at these levels. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t negotiate, just expect them to be pretty stubborn when you do.

The 20 Highest-Paying Jobs at Apple

  • Apple is expanding its Austin, Texas location.
  • The upgrade will bring in 5,000 new jobs and can possibly grow to as many as 15,000 employees.
  • Some of the top jobs at Apple pay over $300,000 a year.

Apple announced it is upgrading and expanding its current Austin, Texas, digs on Thursday, Dec. 13. The new $1 billion campus brings with it the promise of 5,000 new jobs with the potential to eventually employ as many as 15,000 employees and cements Austin’s distinction as the tech hub of the South. At 6,200 employees, the Austin campus is already the largest population of Apple employees outside of the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, Calif.

Choosing the most delicious apple jam recipe

Journalists of “MY!” tried seven types of apple jam and chose the most delicious

Apple jam — what could be more banal? At least once in your life, everyone has probably tried a sweet dessert made from these fruits. But, oddly enough, when the staff of the editorial office “MOYO!” brought and put on the table seven jars of jam made from apples, we made sure that there are no two identical options. Someone takes sweet apples for cooking, someone sour, someone adds more sugar, someone less, some cook dessert only from apples, others put spices, others add some more berries or fruits to apples. In general, we decided through a blind tasting to try all seven types of apple jam and find the best recipe. We hope, dear readers, that our experience will be useful to you, because the season of apple harvesting is in full swing.

For the tasters, we had the editor-in-chief of the newspaper “MOYO!” and the portal “MY! Online” Irina BULGAKOVA, advertising journalist Kristina VORONINA and designer Dmitry MAMONOV. They tried each copy, expressed their opinion about it and set a certain number of points.

  1. “Caramel Apples” jam from the wife of the photographer “MY!” Alexandra ZINCHENKO

Apples — 5 kg

Sugar — 2.5 kg

Remove the skin from the apples, remove the core, cut into pieces of arbitrary shape. Pour the apples into the pan along with the sugar. Cook for two hours, stirring constantly.

Irina — Sugar caramelized during the cooking process. This affected both the color of the jam and the appearance of candy notes. But the “apple” in it, for my taste, is not enough. Score – 7.

Christina – Yes, caramel is definitely felt. Score – 7.

Dmitry – I liked it, tasty and moderately sweet. It’s good that there is not so much sugar. Score – 6.

Total score – 20

2. “Apple Mojito” jam from journalist Evgenia GVOZDENKO

Sweet and sour apples – 1 kg

Lemons – 1 pc.

Sugar – 500 g

Water – 1 cup

Mint – 2 sprigs

Wash the lemon in running water, cut it in half and remove the seeds from it. Then we cut it into thin slices along with the zest. We shift the lemon into a saucepan, fill it with water and cook for 10-15 minutes. In the meantime, peel the apples, free them from the core and cut into pieces as you like. Pour sugar into boiling water and stir to make a syrup with lemon slices. Add chopped apples and mint. Cook over medium heat until tender, about 25-30 minutes. When the jam is ready, take out the mint.

Irina — Very tasty! A subtle, sophisticated combination of apple, lemon and mint. This is an English breakfast option. Point – 10.

Christina – An amazing combination! Delicious! Score – 10

Dmitry – As a child, I ate a similar jam, only apple-lemon, without mint. But if you add mint, just beauty! Score – 10.

Total score: 30.

0345

Apples – 0.5 kg

Pears – 0.5 kg

Plums – 0.5 kg

Sugar – 600 g

Water – 0.5 cup

Peeled pears and apples cut into cubes, put in a container for cooking jam, add water and half the sugar. Boil and leave for a day. The next day, add the plums, freed from stones and cut into four parts. Add the remaining sugar. Cook for five minutes, then add cloves and cinnamon. Stir, turn off the fire and put the jam in jars.

Irina — Very non-standard, warm jam. Spices are felt that harmonize well with other ingredients. Point – 9.

Christina – Jam smells like mulled wine! Perfect for a cold autumn evening. Score – 10

Dmitry – There are spices right in moderation. Delicious! Score – 10.

Total score: 29

and the portal “MY! Online» Irina BULGAKOVA

Apples – any amount

Sugar – to taste

Water – half a glass

Peel and cut apples into small pieces. Pour a little water into the bottom of a thick-walled pan, pour apples, add sugar to taste on top. Cook over low heat, stirring, until the jam reaches the consistency that seems most suitable to you. In general, the readiness of a dish is determined by dropping a drop of jam on a saucer. In the finished dessert, the drop should not spread. But if you prefer a thinner jam, this option is acceptable.

Irina — I rarely eat jam, not my product. But it is this not sweet, in which the aroma of apples is well felt, that I love. Score – 8.

Christina – The consistency is similar to jam. I would love to eat pies with such jam. For me, it’s quite sweet, I love it. Score – 8.

Dmitry – The consistency is similar to baby food, I would say. Soft, tender, moderately sour. Score – 8.

Total score: 24

for August 30, as well as in the electronic version of the newspaper “MOYO! Plus, we will give three more recipes for apple jam from our colleagues. We will also tell you what housewives used to replace sugar in ancient times to make jam, and we will give two recipes for apple dessert from a 1790 cookbook.

Then it will be too late: why it is important for women to discuss their salary

In Russia, the gender wage gap is 28%, in the US it is lower: an average of 18%. Nevertheless, the factors that influence the wage gap are similar: “fine for motherhood”, “glass walls”, taboos on discussing salaries. However, the younger generation is clearly determined to reverse the negative trends. It is important not to delay this process and demand a fair salary from the first day of work, experts say

The gender pay gap in America continues to be significant, as recently reiterated in the headlines around Equal Pay Day (an annual variable date in the US). Yet so far, in a small but growing number of metropolitan areas, including New York, Los Angeles and Washington, the median wages of young women have reached parity with their male peers, and in some cases even exceeded those of young men.

A new analysis of Census Bureau data by the Pew Research Center found that in the US, a full-time woman under the age of 30 earns 93% of what her male peers earn on average. Yet in 22 out of 250 metropolitan areas, young women’s wages are between 100% and 120% of men’s, a sign that the gender pay gap is slowly narrowing. Experts say this is likely the result of a combination of factors, from changes in higher education and a growing number of employer audits to tougher equal pay laws and higher demands from younger workers.

Maybe 22 cities isn’t that many, says Pew Senior Research Fellow Richard Fry, “only those 22 cities include really big cities like New York, Los Angeles and Washington. And if we look at where young women live, it turns out that 16% of working women live in these cities.” Fry says that in 2000, only 5% of working young women lived in areas where women earn equal or higher wages than men—that is, more than three times less than now. For example, in Naples, Florida, young women earn 108% of their male peers on average, San Diego 105%, New York and Washington 102%, Los Angeles 100%. that is, the salaries of men and women are equal.

The report, based on data from the 2015-2019 American Public Survey (the largest household survey in the US), also found that the pay gap between young women and men has narrowed over the past two decades, from 12% in 2000 to 7%. % today.

However, Fry admits that the conclusions that can be drawn from examining the salaries of young women are not relevant for older women. They often face pay cuts if they take time off to care for someone close to them. They are less likely to be appointed to managerial positions. If in 2000 women aged 16 to 29years earned 88 cents for every dollar earned by their male peers, women between the ages of 35 and 48 almost 20 years later earn 80% of the salaries of their male counterparts. It’s part of the “family gap” (family gap – the gap in wages between women with children and childless), says Fry.

Related material

The median wage gap reflects the difference in wages across industries and companies. According to Fry, women are less likely to choose high-paying tech jobs like computer engineering. Or occupations that involve long hours (such as investment banking), foreseeing future family commitments. Regional differences also play a role. The biggest gap in wages between men and women – 33% – is recorded, according to Fry, in Elkhart-Goshen, Indiana, the “van capital”. Most of the jobs there are in the manufacturing industry, which is dominated by men. And in the “apple capital” of Wenatchee, Washington, women earn 20% more than men. It’s hard to explain, Fry said, but in other cities where women’s salaries are higher, campuses, where most of the jobs are in education, could play a role.

Why is the gender wage gap gradually narrowing in some cities? Richard Fry believes that one of the reasons may be education – there is a correlation between a small gap in wages and the number of women with diplomas. However, pay experts point to other factors. Christine Hendrickson, Syndio’s vice president of strategic initiatives, which conducts payroll audits for large corporations, thinks generational change may be the reason.

“Generation Z is speaking out,” she says, referring to younger workers. They discuss salaries with each other. They make lists. They leave reviews on Glassdoor (employer review site. Forbes Woman ). They talk about it on Slack.” Add to that laws on pay transparency, more tools to track pay levels (from the simplest plates that employees create themselves to the same Glassdoor) and the audit that more and more companies are conducting. Not surprisingly, all of these trends are having an impact, Hendrickson says. Compared to how employers and employees perceived the problem of wage equality a few years ago, it is “just day and night,” the expert says.

Kadran Cowansage, co-founder of Elpha, a networking platform targeting women in technology, has compiled a database of wages for tech market participants. She noticed that older women are increasingly talking about the “changing culture” now, and when they were younger, talking about salary was an absolute taboo. Women at higher levels are quite happy with the status quo, but employees who are just starting their careers feel more comfortable discussing salaries. A recent survey of Elpha participants found that women under 30 are slightly more likely than their older counterparts to say that pay transparency is important to them in employers, and that they negotiate pay with colleagues. “Recent graduates entering the labor market are much more aware of the gender pay gap and talk about wage transparency is more sophisticated than even a few years ago,” says Cowansage.

However, Elpha’s research also shows that women at entry-level careers are less likely to discuss salary with an employer than women who have at least one year of work, a concern for equal pay advocates. Gloria Blackwell, CEO of the American Association of Collegiate Women (AAUW), who has long studied women’s pay differentials, says wage and equal pay negotiations early in professional life are especially important for women.

“If women don’t negotiate their wages, or those negotiations don’t work, or women get paid less, it all sets the stage for losses that will happen throughout their careers,” she says. Research shows that a woman who is underpaid early in her career can lose up to $400,000 later in her career. “It’s critical that women get the pay they deserve from day one,” says Blackwell. “It has a huge impact.”

Why your salary is not growing: 8 common reasons

October 19, 2020TUTWork and study

Understand why money is not getting more and fix the situation.

1. You are embarrassed to ask for a raise

It is most often profitable for companies to pay you less, so the initiative in this matter should come from you. Perhaps the authorities simply do not know that it is time for you to raise your salary. Don’t be afraid to talk about it, but do it the right way: always make a solid argument.

How to fix it

Schedule a conversation with your boss at the right time. Make a conversation plan, marking all the key points in it so that you don’t miss anything.

Be sure to think through the arguments that will justify the increase in your salary. This may be overfulfillment of the plan, expansion of powers, the situation on the market, and so on. All reasons should be objective, no “I think” and “specialists of my level usually cost more”.

Back up your words with facts and figures. Also determine how much more you want to receive, and name a specific amount.

  • TEST: What is your psychological age?

2. They have already asked for a raise without giving weighty arguments

The case when last time you did not justify the need for an increase in salary. The authorities to this day think that you simply did not deserve it. Therefore, you need to convince the management, and prepare for the fact that it will not be easy.

How to fix it

As in the previous case, make a plan and think through the arguments. This time you have no right to make a mistake – all arguments must be reinforced concrete and work in your favor.

3. You don’t improve your qualifications

A specialist who doesn’t develop cannot claim a salary increase. In most industries, the specifics of work change very quickly, you must constantly stay in the know.

How to fix it

Take refresher courses, attend a seminar, read specialist literature, and watch instructional videos. It is good if you have confirmation of the acquired knowledge, for example, a certificate or a recommendation from a teacher.

4. Afraid to expand your area of responsibility

The fact that you perform your daily duties well is no reason to pay you more. But if you are not afraid to take on new functions, showing your interest in the end result and your willingness to grow, that is another matter.

How to fix it

Close indirect tasks (those in which you are competent, but which are not in your area of responsibility), make your own decisions and perform managerial functions. The latter will allow you to grow from an ordinary specialist to a manager, and your salary has every chance to increase two or three times.

5.

Keep quiet about the fact that the volume of work has increased

When you got a job, everything that you do today was not part of your responsibilities. Don’t be afraid to tell management about it.

How to fix it

Talk to your superiors, tell them what you are doing more now. However, this should not look like a claim. No, you do not mind working more, do not demand that new tasks be removed from you. You are interested in developing and bringing great benefits to the company, but you want to get more. There is a direct correlation here, and we need to talk about it. A normal manager will understand that it’s time to raise your salary.

6. Your boss doesn’t know that you have become more efficient

Sales are growing, customers are happy, the company is getting more money. The authorities are satisfied with this, and they do not always want to delve into why this is happening.

Don’t be afraid to say that you also influenced this state of affairs. The personal effectiveness of each employee is the key to the success of the company as a whole.

How to fix it

Prepare a report on your work for the last month. So you visually present the results to the management (implementation of the plan, achievement of KPI), and the proposal for a salary increase will be quite logical.

7. You have reached the salary cap for this position in this company

A situation that requires a radical solution. Talking with superiors about a salary increase is powerless here, because the salary has its own limit. Crossing it is beneficial for you, but not for the company. Remember this.

How to fix it

There are two ways here: change jobs or apply for a promotion in the same organization. If you chose the first, write a resume, study the market and look for the most interesting options. In the second case, talk to the management, describing the situation, and together try to find a new place for you.

8. Your salary is already higher than the market one

In this case, it is useless to want more, but it would not hurt to come down from heaven to earth. In pursuit of a higher salary, you risk losing the one that you have and that other specialists only dream of. At the same time, you have no guarantee that you will be able to recover your income after.

How to fix it

It is foolish to demand more from this company. But if for some reason you still need to increase income, then look for other markets (for example, consider vacancies in Western organizations).

Overproduction of apples: not a sentence, but a reason to think

This year’s apple harvest was a record for Ukraine. And if consumers are cheered up by this, then producers are declaring huge losses, and some of them are talking about their intention to uproot apple orchards and re-profile their activities.

***

Ukraine has become the European leader in terms of falling prices for apples. So, at the height of the apple picking season, many gardeners said that the current price for this product fell below cost. According to the head of the horticultural sector from the Vinnytsia region Anton Ruban, they sell wholesale table varietal apples for 3 UAH with VAT, and technical apples in general for 1 hryvnia per kg. And all this despite the fact that the cost of fuels and lubricants, plant protection products, fertilizers and wages have increased significantly, pushing their cost to the same mark of UAH 3 per kilogram.

As a result of all this, this enterprise plans to uproot 25% of its orchards, and grow grain and oilseeds on these areas. There, in the Vinnitsa region, there are also farms that declare their complete rejection of gardening.

Small farms, which have neither their own storage nor the ability to supply apples for export, are in a particularly difficult situation. They talk about their readiness to sell their products, even for 2-3 UAH per kg. Large enterprises are ready to ship packaged selected apples of popular varieties at 5-6 UAH/kg.

At the same time, most experts call the current situation with overproduction of apples natural. And the point here is not only the increase in productivity due to favorable weather conditions. This is only one side of the coin. The question is also that the active fruiting of the gardens, which were planted 3-4 years ago, is now beginning.

And according to the agricultural market expert Tatyana Getman, the situation with apples simply could not be different. She states that in Ukraine the annual gross harvest, under normal weather conditions, increases by 100-200 thousand tons. Thus, overproduction becomes inevitable, and the fact that it was not in previous seasons is simply a consequence of adverse weather. Moreover, in the future this problem will become even more tangible, as the orchards established using intensive technology will only increase yields.

Logically, the surplus must either be processed or exported. But even here it is not so simple. First, the marketing mistakes made a few years ago exacerbate the problem. In the period from 2010 to 2013, gardeners mainly focused on the Russian market, almost no one bothered with the issues of diversifying sales markets. This was expressed both in the selection of varieties, and in the orientation towards cheap, not very high-quality goods. And as a result, “may be the ones that can”: the quality of our apples is often not suitable for the world’s largest importing countries.

But this season there is one more nuance on the “export front”. So, according to the analyst of the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association (UPOA) Tatyana Smirnova, this season in Europe there is also a good harvest of apples. In particular, an increase in their production was noted in the “main apple orchard” of the EU – Poland. Moreover, even in the conditions of a huge overproduction of apples in Ukraine, there are examples of competition in our domestic market from Polish producers. In particular, it is observed in the premium segment on the shelves of our supermarkets .

If you pay attention to the processing sphere, then the world trend is striking to reduce demand for restored juices (i.e., obtained from concentrate). And in Ukraine, the production of apple concentrate has been developed (since the time of the Union). While straight juices are still losing popularity in the domestic market due to the higher price. Some manufacturers are looking for other ways, for example, the production of apple chips or freeze-dried products, but so far there are only a few of them.

And yet, the main output for domestic producers in this case is export. At the same time, according to analysts, attention should be paid not only to the EU, but also to the markets of Asian countries. And the representative of the UN Food Organization (FAO), Andriy Yarmak, claims that there are already enterprises in Ukraine that successfully export apples to the countries of the Middle East and Southeast Asia. And this is despite the fact that their markets are quite demanding. But today they sell apples for 15 UAH/kg and more.

Other experts give similar examples. And the head of the association “Ukrsadprom” Dmytro Kroshka is confident in the prospects for our producer to export to India, which opened its market for Ukrainian apples in October. He insists that India is not only able to completely replace the Russian market, but will also push our enterprises to improve cultivation and storage technologies. Since products can be delivered there only if a certain temperature regime is observed.

And one more thing. According to the results of this season, the number of enterprises involved in the apple business is unlikely to noticeably decrease, since the orchard is a considerable investment. But if the situation repeats itself in the coming years, then “organizational conclusions” will begin. And, first of all, we will see how large players “put under the knife” orchards with low productivity and unpromising varieties.

Apple business – Katz offers to win – LiveJournal

Today Vedomosti and Novaya Gazeta wrote about our situation in Yabloko. In general, I thought that this was a super-internal topic and no one was interested, but since such a thing, I am writing an update.

As you remember, in 2016 I joined Yabloko and announced that I intended to stand as a candidate for the next election of the leadership of the Moscow branch. Along with me, I invited others to join.
At first, we were not accepted into the party for a year and a half, but then they accepted us, they said that they were glad to see new people come, and they appointed leadership elections. Since the situation was acute, Yavlinsky did it personally.

We decided the following: a general meeting of all members of the Moscow Yabloko will be held, and a leader will be elected at it. A press release was issued about this, everyone rejoiced.

This is a cut, you can see it in full here.

We began to prepare for the elections, organized and held debates of candidates for leadership, there was a big and cool debate tournament, everyone was happy and waited for the elections.

However, in December the leadership announced that there would be no elections and postponed them to February. In February, they also decided not to hold elections, and in general there was talk that no one needed a general meeting, it was necessary to elect a leader in some other way.

How else? The law allows such a procedure as a conference. This is when party members do not all get together and vote, and everyone has an equal vote, but when party members send a delegate to represent them.
The General Meeting cannot be manipulated – everyone came and everyone has 1 vote.
You can also add superdelegates to a conference. Usually these are deputies. But you can also add “professional party members” – representatives of factions, party arbitration, the control and audit commission, federal political committees and bureaus.

Imagine how, instead of elections for the mayor of Moscow, they would arrange such a procedure: like a conference in Moscow. Each district elects 2 delegates by direct vote, but in addition to them, judges of the Moscow City Court, the Accounts Chamber and State Duma deputies from Moscow participate on an equal footing in the conference.
And now you even chose 80% of the opposition representatives from the districts in the elections, and the judges of the Moscow City Court, employees of the Accounts Chamber and deputies of the State Duma outweigh the vote in favor of Sobyanin and he is re-elected mayor.
How do you like that? 🙂

That’s exactly what they did. Only the deputies were not allowed to be superdelegates (because they support me), but there were plenty of professional party members. Wrapped around your finger.
Naturally, almost everyone was against it, even longtime Yabloko members, because both the letter of public statements and the spirit of democratic procedures are being violated.

But without moving an ear, without letting any of those indignant into the hall, this conference held “elections”. All Yabloko laughed at us: haha, these naive young people thought that we would hold elections here that they could win, ahahahaha.

At this point, you may ask a reasonable question: why do I belong to a structure that does this, why do I urge others to join there, and in general.

There are two reasons. The first is that when the question is not about internal organization, this structure works quite conscientiously. Appropriate and oppositional candidates are nominated in the elections, the campaigns, at least in Moscow and St. Petersburg, are going well.
There is a struggle going on with us, but Besedina was elected and Yabloko helped a lot both financially and publicly, they also had a good campaign in St. Petersburg. Yabloko firmly holds opposition positions, the leadership goes to all rallies.
That is, the work is done. This is good – if we get a strong opposition list to the State Duma, then it’s all worth it, because I really don’t need a position in this story.

The second reason is that we live in an authoritarian system that devours any activity, and what is left of the opposition must be supported. Even if it behaves like this.
During these 3 years in Yabloko, I heard a lot more nasty things about myself in Yabloko than in my entire previous life. Previously, the main enemy of the Yabloko worker was Schlosberg, all sorts of rumors were spread about him, after my appearance I became one. Whatever they said: and that we have a sect, and that I work for the mayor’s office, and that I am a professional destroyer of structures, and that I am authoritarian and think only of myself. A variety of message boxes were used to convince colleagues that I was bad.
They even hired a special person whose only job is to fight me. He is not busy with anything else, he only makes attempts to “do it like Katz, but without Katz.”
But – Yabloko remains an opposition party, continues to nominate opposition candidates, to hold positions. In Moscow and St. Petersburg, it has 10% of base supporters. Internal problems are a reason to step in and fix them, and not a reason to give up on Yabloko.

People long and unanimously called to join them and wanted renewal, but now it has come, and with it not the most pleasant experience: party members in Moscow want to participate in the decision-making process themselves, and on an equal footing. They broke down, canceled the elections, staged who knows what instead of them – the grinding process became more complicated.
But I’m still in a friendly mood and I hope that we will still work together.

Today, the members of the observer movement, who joined the party, who were the most freaked out by the abolition of democracy, used the statutory procedure, invented specifically against usurpation, and demanded that a general meeting be held where everyone with equal voting rights would be able to vote.
