Salaries Are Up for Mechanical Engineers

It is a pretty good time to be a mechanical engineer.

Salaries are rising, according to a new ASME survey that shows the median total primary compensation for mechanical engineers in 2016 is $124,000. This builds on information showing base salaries have risen between 3.5 percent and 5 percent per year from 2013 to 2016.

Experience counts too. Those MEs with more than twenty years of experience have a median income of $144,644. But entry-level engineers should not complain. The survey shows those beginning their careers earned a median primary income of $73,079. More than nine in 10 full-time ME employees are offered health insurance by their employers.

The 2017 Salary Survey of ASME members measured only salaries and compensation in the U.S. Responses were garnered from 1,661 members, or 3.4 percent of those queried. The results reflect changes from the 2013 Salary Survey, which was the last such survey conducted.

 

Income by length of experience, 2017 vs. 2013 (full-time salaried only).

 

Compensation varies depending on multiple factors, including education, experience, disciplines, geography, and gender. The typical respondent is a white male in his late forties with at least a bachelor’s degree who has been employed in an engineering-related positon for 20 or more years, including senior-level responsibility with supervisory tasks.

Those with a Ph.D earned the highest median income of $155,000, followed by those with either an MBA or Master’s degree in mechanical or other engineering discipline, at $125,000 or more. The largest percentage of respondents said their highest degree is a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, earning a median income of $118,000.

Mechanical engineers with a professional engineers license earned a median income of $133,000, nearly $16,000 more than those lacking the PE license.

“It is an exciting time to be an engineer,” says Charla K. Wise, president of ASME. “The demand for engineers continues to grow, and many stimulating job opportunities are emerging.”

Lucrative

The most lucrative areas are in nuclear, petroleum, chemical, utilities, and consulting practices, according to the survey. Mechanical engineers with training in nuclear and petroleum/chemical disciplines earned the highest median income of $145,000 and $144,000, respectively. Conversely, those with academic training in computer science/engineering and mathematics earned the least, at $92,181 and $100,509, respectively.

The results confirm strong demand for engineering services, especially in petroleum and offshore oil production. The authors also point to nuclear engineering, where the power industry wants engineers knowledgeable in in modular systems and other new and nontraditional technologies that could bring electric power to countries in need.

Among ethnicity types, Asian or Pacific Islanders showed a median income of $130,000, while Hispanic respondents earned a median primary income of $119,750.

Increasing demand for engineering services in overseas markets, especially in China where energy and transportation development continues at a fast pace, pushes higher salaries in those markets. But they do not reflect a labor shortage in the U.S., according to the survey.

Male-Female Wage Gap

The gender gap also is apparent as the median primary income for females responding to the survey trailed those of men, $103,500 to $125,000. The survey notes male respondents have been employed longer in an engineering-related position, a likely factor in the discrepancy in incomes. An overwhelming 92 percent of survey respondents were male. That reflects ASME’s membership; worldwide, 6 percent of ASME members are female.

Not surprisingly, compensation also correlates between job levels and functions. MEs in the role of executive, president, or owner had the highest median income, $227,500. Those at the next level of director or vice presidents showed $175,000. Junior engineers earned $70,850.

For those whose roles were identified as general and technical management, primary income is reported at $160,000 and $149,753, respectively.

Regionally

Regionally, the survey follows the nine U. S. census divisions. Those in the West South Central, South Atlantic, New England, Pacific and Mountain regions reported income above the national level. Those is the East South Central, East North Central and West North Central reported primary income of $115,000 or less.

New Mexico, New Hampshire and Florida reported the highest incomes, $157,400, $148,550 and $147,813, respectively. Mississippi, Nebraska and Tennessee have the lowest incomes, $91,615, $95,500 and $99,878, respectively.

For metropolitan areas, the highest salaries reported are in Hartford, CT, $158,500; Los Angeles/Long Beach, $155,811; San Jose, CA, $155,000; and Albuquerque, NM, $153,783. The lowest median incomes are in Grand Rapids, MI, $99,000; Salt Lake City, UT, $99,200; and Louisville, KY, $104,500. Many of the highest incomes were reported along the East and West coasts.

The survey, designed to be interactive with individual engineers, is available online. Results are entered into two distinct interactive salary calculators. The Regression Salary Calculator uses regression analysis, allowing one to calculate individual results for thousands of possible employment situations. The Searchable Survey Data Tool allows the user to create customized aggregations of the survey results. These salary calculators will enable mechanical engineers to compute their salary based on their very specific, individual circumstances, location, experience, licensing’s, and others. The salary survey will be repeated annually to update the calculators with the most up to date data accordingly.

For comparison, a 2017 survey of civil engineers by the American Society of Civil Engineers found the median pre-tax income in 2016 for civil engineers was $101,000. Base salaries rose between 4 percent and 5 percent each year since 2014, according to the survey. Professional licensure increases the median salary to $108,000. Civil engineers with a bachelor’s degree have a median salary of $93,000; those with a Master’s degree earn $101,100. The male-female pay gap also exists for civil engineers; female civils earn $83,000 compared to $101,400 for male respondents.

Despite discrepancies, mechanical engineering remains an attractive field where qualified engineers continue to be in demand and are rewarded for their work.

Mechanical engineer

Mechanical engineers design mechanical and thermal equipment to solve mechanical problems. These professionals use computer-aided design software (such as AutoCAD and Revit), oversee the manufacturing process, and make adjustments, as needed. Mechanical designer

Electrical engineers oversee and participate in the design, manufacturing, testing, and installation of electrical equipment. They both create new products and work to improve existing ones. They often work closely with project managers.

Biomedical engineer

Sustainability engineers design and build structures, devices, and systems geared toward preserving and protecting the environment. Energy-efficient buildings, hydroelectric dams, water treatment systems, and air pollution control devices fall within the scope of a sustainability engineer. 

Sustainability engineers update and maintain plans, secure permits, and monitor environmental impacts and improvements that result from their projects. They also carry out maintenance and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

Automotive engineer

Salary expectations: $80,358 average base salary (2022)

Skills needed: Advanced mathematics, computer-aided drafting and design, computer programming, vehicle construction, analytical skills, creativity

Automotive engineers develop and improve upon components, mechanisms, and designs used for vehicles. They may create electrical components, program car software, or design entire vehicles. They also test vehicles to ensure compliance with automotive industry standards.

Automotive engineers work in an office or on a manufacturing floor and have an understanding of consumer demand and sales performance.

Civil engineer

Salary expectations: $88,570 median annual salary (2020)

Skills needed: Advanced mathematics, statics, mechanics and systems, and fluid dynamics knowledge; computer-aided design and drafting; surveying

Civil engineers design, build, supervise, and maintain infrastructure projects and systems. They work in the private and public sector alike. These professionals oversee the design and construction of roads, buildings, bridges, and facilities, including water and sewage treatment and conveyance systems.

Civil engineers review and analyze technical reports, plans, and other data to determine costs, hazards, and applicable regulations to projects.

An engineer-in-training (EIT) certificate is generally preferred for entry-level civil engineering jobs, and a professional engineer (PE) license is required for career advancement.

        Interesting fact! The highest income in the narrow professional field is received by graduates of the Faculty of Mathematics of Charles University. According to the Czech Department of Employment, it is specialists in applied mathematics and analytics who, immediately after graduation, can count on a salary in the Czech Republic in the amount of almost 50 thousand crowns (1900 euros), ahead of financiers and lawyers.

        According to statistics, 96% of applicants with a diploma are employed in the first year after graduation. The studies carried out show the following unemployment data by profession:

        • Physicians and pharmacists – unemployment 1.1%;

        Naturally, future students are concerned about the question “What are the salaries in the Czech Republic, and what income can I claim?”. Let’s look at the rating of popular (demanded) professions with salaries. In the Czech Republic, all monetary transactions are carried out in the national currency – kroons.

        Where and how do foreigners work in the Czech Republic? The capital of the republic offers salaries 20-50% higher than the regions. This is not surprising, because it is in the center that well-known companies and brands with a worldwide reputation prefer to open offices.         The highest salaries are among directors of enterprises, lawyers and programmers. On the Czech labor market, there is a large shortage of specialists in the aircraft industry and professional managers in this area. Perhaps that is why air traffic controllers are offered a salary in the Czech Republic in the amount of more than 110 thousand crowns (4300 euros). The remaining highly paid professions look like this (monthly amount in kroons):

        • Head of a large company – from 100,000;
        • The head doctor of the clinic – from 89,000, departments – from 60,000. The salary of an ordinary doctor in the Czech Republic is about 30-40 thousand;

        Recall that the average salary in the Czech Republic “lags” behind the salaries of large European countries, but there are countries with developed economies, whose residents receive significantly lower incomes. So, in terms of crowns, in Poland the average earnings are 21,000, in Estonia – 22,000, in Hungary – 18,500, in Latvia and Lithuania – about 16,000-17,000.         I have been working here for seven years. I live in the Moscow region, and I go to work in Moscow – it takes about an hour and a half from door to door. The working day starts at seven in the morning, so I get up around five.

        I work mostly at the computer, and in the afternoon I try to get out for a walk. It happens that I need to go to the production – I especially like it, because there I see the fruits of my labors.

        Part-time jobs don’t happen very often, but if they do, it’s long-term — you have to give it your all. At such moments, you feel like a cog in a whole mechanism.

        My salary is now around 100,000 R. Part-time jobs are valued differently, depending on the importance of the task. Additionally, you can earn from 5,000 to 20,000 R per month. Some other guys make money by registering design ideas and getting a patent for them. Someone wins prizes in competitions.

        . It allows you to work in almost any industry. I started in 2007 with an income of 28,000 rubles. First, I worked in the thermal power industry, then in the electric power industry, and now in the mining industry.

        Progress here, of course, is not as fast as in IT, and technologies that are more than a dozen years old, or even several dozen, are often used, but learning once and then earning it all your life will not work.

        Since 2011 and still working in the Russian representative office of a foreign company that manufactures and maintains mining equipment. The foreign origin of the employer affects, although the national specificity is superimposed, it is not expressed as clearly as with native Russian employers. I mean such principles as “I’m the boss, you’re a fool”, “I don’t like it – I have a lot of people who want to work behind the fence” and so on. This is practically non-existent here.

        Now I am assigned to a service contract and spend almost all my working time at the customer’s site, where several of our production rope mining shovels work. I mainly advise the staff, but I do some work myself. If maintenance or repairs are being done, I spend the whole day on the excavator, sometimes I have to go out after hours. If not, I am engaged in reporting or preparatory work on repairs, correspondence with technical support if necessary.

        For me, the most positive thing is that I spend most of my working time with equipment, and not with people.

        A mining excavator is a very expensive machine, its downtime is a huge lost profit for the customer, so almost all the amazing stories in our work are related to the launch of a faulty machine in the absence of original spare parts in stock. Once we discovered a malfunction of the connecting loop between two electronic boards of the electric drive. This malfunction is not typical, no one held such cables in the presence, but outwardly they reminded me of those that I saw in a regular computer. I asked a friend to disassemble my computer and bring me this cable – in the middle of the night, by the way – and after a little refinement with a hacksaw, it fell into place like a native. Has been working for seven years.

        Now I earn a little more than 100,000 R per month after paying personal income tax. In addition, the employer pays for voluntary medical insurance, accident insurance, and also provides a company car. For my region, these are quite good conditions. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to earn much more in an engineering position – only in the case of growth into managers or transfer to sales managers, but this is not interesting to me. I don’t take part-time jobs, I’d rather spend my free time for my own pleasure.

        Graduated from the bachelor’s degree in the specialty “technical operation of aircraft and engines”. After that, he stubbornly tried to get a contract in the armed forces in his specialty. As a result, I saw enough of everything and after a conversation with one comrade captain, I decided that it was time to stop knocking on this door.

        I decided to move to Novosibirsk, entered the NSTU master’s program, but after the first semester I transferred to the Irkutsk Polytechnic University. Here I chose another direction – design and technological support of machine-building industries. By the end of the first year, they answered my resume from the aircraft factory. At the interview, they didn’t ask me anything, besides whether I would go to the army, and they hired me as a design engineer.

        I like the element of creativity: technical specifications come to a variety of types of equipment – from a trolley to a slipway, from a puller to a clamp. But this requires a lot of knowledge. I think that this profession is suitable only for people who are enthusiastic. Why – can be seen from the size of the salary.

        My salary is 11,500 R, the coefficient is 1.6, plus there are bonuses. As a result, I get 22,000-25,000 R. The scholarship saves: another 6,000 R.

        The system of remuneration is confusing. We are evaluated in A4 formats. That is, the result of your work is a set of design documentation, drawings. It would seem that everything is simple: you need to calculate how many A4 formats are in your drawings. But no! There are many coefficients – decreasing and increasing. The timesheet has the number of formats per month. Anything above is paid. But, in fact, there is no document that defines the system for evaluating the work of a designer. By and large, they are evaluated from the bulldozer! First, your group leader evaluates, then the head of the design bureau, who constantly lowers the group leader’s rating. This system does not take into account labor costs: you can “format” on a simple job and cover the time sheet, or you can hesitate on a complex one and, as a result, remain in the red – this means that you will have to close debts according to formats next month. Not all overtime formats will pay you for overtime, but only 30 – this is plus 3000 R. In order to pay the rest, you need to wait 12 hours. But parties are not paid! I think that they try to squeeze more out of an employee if he wants to earn a normal salary.

        I purposefully don’t take part-time jobs, but sometimes I come across myself: draw an oven there, help with coursework here. But these are trifles.

        I go to work from a neighboring city, I spend about 5000 R per month on travel. Another 3500 R I pay for a communal apartment and the Internet, the rest goes to food. It happens that there is little money left, but most often it turns out back to back.

        If you get sick or, for example, your jeans are torn, then you are in the red.

        I think that my work is a very valuable experience. However, I understand that you can’t stay here, you need to look for something more paid. By the way, a group leader with 40 years of experience receives 60,000-65,000 R per month. You need to learn new things, such as industrial design. Or engage in the same modeling, but in a different area.

        At the institute, I heard the story a thousand times about how important we are to our industry, that we will be taken away hand and foot as soon as we leave the threshold of the university. But the reality is that no one needs you without work experience. After two months of searching, I was invited to work in another city. Since there were no options, I took a chance. A year and a half later, he returned and settled down in his native city without any problems.

        The essence of work in my industry is to receive, transmit, distribute heat and electricity. I am an engineer for the operation of heat engineering equipment at a CHP. Under my control is the equipment of the boiler and turbine shop of various capacities. I have to draw up repair programs, control the operation of equipment, organize its repair and maintain documentation.

        Work is associated with high risks and the impact of harmful factors on health. These are high temperatures – in the workshop it can be up to +80 °C, noise, vibration, coal dust. The equipment has long been outdated and has even repeatedly exhausted its service life. But nothing can be done: in our country, the energy industry is not worthy of close attention.

        We are all used to hot water and cannot do without electricity, but few people think about how difficult it is to produce. A power engineer must have knowledge in the field of physics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, mechanics, chemistry and other sciences. Working with critical equipment parameters – steam temperature up to 555 °C, pressure over 100 kgf / cm² – requires professionalism and love for your work.

        I get about 65,000 R, which is the average market salary. You can earn more through promotions. But it’s hard in this area: adults don’t want to retire, young people don’t have career opportunities because of this.

        I would like to have additional income, become financially independent and leave the energy industry. The best solution would be to learn a profession that will allow you to work from anywhere in the world, having a computer at hand.

        Since childhood, I have been interested in mobile phones and how mobile communications work. I wanted to work at MegaFon, then it was a pipe dream. He entered the St. Petersburg State University of Telecommunications named after M.A. Bonch-Bruevich. Immediately after graduation, in the fall of 2014, I began to purposefully study the vacancies of MegaFon. After the interviews, they were ready to take me for three at once. I chose to work with the radio network and life support systems of base stations in a single network control center, aka UTsUS, aka GNOC. Now my direction has become known as “technical innovations and infrastructure”.

        The essence of my work is to ensure the performance of antennas in the central branch. This includes seven regions: Tula, Kursk, Kaluga, Orel, Bryansk, Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod. Everything happens remotely, with the help of signal messages on three large monitors. Also in our center there is a video wall approximately 30 meters long and 3 meters high – the most important data throughout Russia is displayed there.

        I work every three days. I arrive at nine in the morning, it is desirable to be there 10-15 minutes in advance to take the shift from the engineer who leaves the day. I load the PC under my account, launch the management and monitoring systems. Tea break around 10-11 am, lunch after 12:30 pm, there is also a tea break in the evening. After six in the evening, the working environment usually becomes calmer, as five-day colleagues go home, and colleagues from the regions do not write letters and call so actively, and generally break something on the network. I have dinner around eight, there is even an opportunity to go to the store. Difficulties sometimes arise due to a large number of emergency messages or one big emergency – then you can’t leave. After 11 pm, they usually carry out scheduled work and stress testing on the network, sometimes they stretch until 2-3 am – this adds work and responsibility. By nine in the morning I’m getting ready to turn in my shift and go home to sleep.

        We have a pretty good social package, voluntary medical insurance, insurance for those traveling abroad, compensation for mobile communications expenses with established limits for each position. But low salary indexation: from 37,000 R in more than five years, the salary was increased to 47,000 R. New employees in the same position can receive even more, this is unfair. Such income does not exactly correspond to the field and position – at least based on inflation over the past five years.

        To earn more, you need to become a senior engineer, but for this you will have to wait for a vacant place or move to another department – and not the fact that the salary will immediately increase. Or get a job at another company. The schedule keeps me here and I like the work, but not the salary.

        In 2017, I graduated from the College of Telecommunications and Informatics in Novosibirsk, entered the university by correspondence and worked in a company that outsourced the IT infrastructure of small and medium-sized businesses. But the work did not work out: the frantic pace and limitless multitasking did their job. It used to happen that you come to emergency work, and they call you and tell you that another client needs urgent help.

        Once I was called for an interview at the data center of the technopark of the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok. At the start, they promised a salary of about 26,000 R or a little more. Unlike the previous job, there was no KPI here – only hours worked and a bonus if you perform your duties well. In addition, in three days, the schedule is ideal for me: I can go on a short three-day trip to Altai or Sheregesh to ski or snowboard. True, especially the “lucky” ones can get on the shift on December 31 or on another holiday. And then you have to celebrate in splendid isolation to the quiet noise of equipment in the car hall.

        The engineer’s job here is to ensure that the equipment functions properly and the customers who placed it do not think about it. In fact, the data center belongs to the government of the Novosibirsk Region, but private clients get here through intermediary companies that rent racks in the DC. This is done by concession between the government and intermediary companies.

        Since this is a state institution, there is just a terrible bureaucracy here: even pens are bought at competitions. This causes incredible inconvenience, sometimes you have to wait for months for the necessary devices and equipment.

        But, frankly, there are very few large IT companies in the province, which greatly limits the opportunity to get acquainted with advanced technologies and equipment. But in the data center there are just those few companies that work with top-end hardware, and you also study it.

        My working day begins with me taking over my shift, reading email, and making a rough plan for the day. This is followed by a detour – a complete inspection of all premises and equipment for malfunctions. After that, you need to compile and send a report to the head of the DC, the chief power engineer and all engineers. This takes about an hour. Then there can be any tasks – from helping the client with migration to laying cables and monitoring the maintenance of DC engineering systems by contractors. In the evening, the second round.

        After that, a technological window opens when most of the switching on customer equipment is carried out, it can last until the early morning, but often this procedure takes no more than an hour.

        The hardest part is night work and large client migrations. Usually these two things are inextricably linked. Since a break should not be noticeable for ordinary users, large companies transport their equipment to DCs exclusively at night on holidays or on weekends so that office work does not stop. Migration can continue for several days if something goes wrong. But usually this is a carefully planned event and everything goes smoothly.

        It’s a very quiet place, about 70% of the time you spend alone and you can work at your pace. Accidents are extremely rare, so you can educate yourself or just relax a bit. Perhaps this profession is especially suitable for students and freelancers, our entire staff consists of both.

        I earn an average of 35,000 R, but there are so-called high months – February, March, May and December: they have many holidays, which means that they pay more for shifts. I also work part-time with photography and have concluded an agreement with an agency that buys frames that are interesting to them. This brings me up to a third of my income every month – about 50,000 R in total.

        Pretty soon I will have a choice: to continue to improve myself as an engineer or become a photographer. I am unlikely to remain a DC engineer: this is still a basic step in a narrow-profile specialty. But I see the future in the engineering profession as a whole: this area has been developing at an unprecedented rate in recent years. And the income grows by itself – depending on what I can offer employers.

As a result, he got a job as a design engineer without a category at the plant.

        The essence of the profession is “do this – I don’t know what.” The work requires a wide range of skills and knowledge: 3D modeling, drafting, materials science, electrical engineering, circuitry, strength of materials, parts manufacturing technologies, assembly, testing. After the drawings for each detail are made, there are nine circles of hell for their approval. When everything is approved, the process of manufacturing and purchasing parts begins – the tenth circle of hell: either they buy the wrong thing, or they do it wrong. When the product is assembled, you need to participate in design supervision during testing. All comments and results are recorded, and corrections are made to the 3D models and drawings.

        The very first task performed alone, from the scheme to the finished product and tests, always remains in memory. It’s a very cool feeling when you realize that you gave life to an idea, everyone liked it and goes into series.

        I have been working for three years at one of the Rosatom enterprises at the production site of motor transport equipment. Here is an interesting job, a stable salary, free lunches and a hostel is provided. But our computers are not designed for designing, bags are inspected, and depending on the position and the work performed, a form of secrecy is given, so you can forget about abroad. Almost always you have to work 10-12 hours, overtime is not paid. We often work on weekends, for which we are paid double. If you have the strength and desire, you can ask for it yourself, if not, then you still have to work when the deadlines are burning. I usually work three Saturdays a month.

True, he still sometimes missed classes, but for a different reason: he worked as a salesman-printer in a copy center. He dreamed of earning money for a car – and in his last year of study he bought a three-year-old Lada Kalina.

        In the process of studying, I somehow lost interest in the profession of a programmer, I liked production and assembly shops more: we were organized excursions there. I got an internship at a local plant, the main profile of which is the development, production, testing and debugging of electrical equipment for military equipment and railway transport. Here, under the guidance of an engineer of the design center, I wrote my diploma and worked part-time in a group of design engineers, my salary was about 5,500 R. After defending my diploma, in 2012, I got a full-time job and began to receive 16,500 R. And when four years later, he quit, the nominal salary was about 28,000 R. It happened that it was cut because the department did not fulfill the tasks set for the month. But in some months I worked overtime or went on business trips – for this I received from 3000 to 8000 R on top.

        I currently work for a company that is fully oriented towards the commercial market. We develop electric drive systems for drilling rigs. In simple terms, this is a set of metal cabinets interconnected and filled with various power electronics components: power switches, transformers, fuses, capacitors, copper bars, cables, control electronics, and so on.

        Here is a white salary, about 47,000 R — slightly higher than the average in this area in the region. No one forces you to stay late or work on weekends. On the contrary, it is strongly recommended not to go beyond the 40-hour work week unless absolutely necessary. Although I do not mind working overtime for an increase in bonuses. But most often, no additional tasks or overtime work is expected.

        I tried to take part-time jobs, but without success. I tried to make layouts and drawings for student course projects, but in the end I spent a lot of time and got a penny. Approached freelance exchanges or projects of third-party organizations in our city. In both cases, I met proposals for large projects with vague prospects – I did not dare to get involved in long-term adventures.

        I noticed that freelance marketplaces are more likely to require art models, so I started watching basic surface modeling tutorials on YouTube to learn. In the last couple of years, I have noticed that I am stalling in development. The work, of course, is not easy, it constantly requires mental effort, but each new project is partially similar to the previous one.

        At first I did not know who I would like to be, by the age of 20 I realized that I did not want to study at the institute with a degree in radio communications engineering, and started working as a salesman in a store that sold computer hardware. Every day after work, I spent 2-3 hours on self-education.

        At my first job in IT, I received 18,000 R, then I got a job in an energy company near Moscow with a salary of 23,000 R, then as an engineer in an international company with a salary of 70,000 R and a subsequent increase in two years to 110,000 R. After that, I worked in state transport company in Moscow – received from 140,000 to 160,000 RUR.

        Now I work for a company headquartered in California. It was founded by Russian guys, and all the development is in Moscow. You can’t just work at this job, coming day after day and doing the same thing for 20 years: every day there are new tasks that have to be solved in a new way. Sometimes during a working week I write code for only 3-5 hours out of 40, the rest of the time is spent drawing graphs, diagrams and written notebooks in order to understand how this or that component of the system should work. Several times I mistakenly deleted all databases of multinational companies. In the next few hours, I restored it all – and no one saw my mistakes.

        I like constant stress. This will probably kill me.

        My main income now is 240,000 R. Another 9,000 R comes to a special card as compensation for food expenses – this money can be used in certain restaurants or in Yandex Food. I also teach at the university for 1/10 of the rate, I receive a salary of 2,000 R. Depending on the workload, this amount can reach up to 10,000 R.

        I spend 65,000 R on rent, 35,000 R on food, I pay for a nurse for my grandmother – this is another 35,000 R. Taxi costs 4,000 R a month, clothes – an average of 1,000 R. I do not think that I save, but I often deny myself things that I could buy, or desires, because I understand that these are impulsive desires. Every month I transfer to a bank deposit 90 000 R and buy shares for 10 000 R. My financial goal is to retire at 50-55 years old and live the remaining days with absolutely the same monthly income as now, taking into account the inflation rate.

        I have a secondary vocational education, but I try not to tell anyone about it: it’s not very pleasant when you are mentally associated with the word “idiot”. Although I have a rather interesting specialty – “electrification and automation of agriculture.” This is such a hybrid of an electrician, a Kipovitian who specializes in measuring and recording equipment, an engineer and a manager. The rural power engineer turns the nuts, and draws up a maintenance schedule, and orders a new electric motor, drawing a scheme for hanging lamps in between. The curriculum was filled with a heavy ballast of various knowledge – from the technology of milking cows and the device of the MTZ-80 tractor to the basics of pedagogical skills. As a result, we have a mysterious beast – a diploma of advanced secondary vocational education. From the point of view of HR and personnel officers – “What are you ?!”

        At the time of graduation, despite the crisis, salaries in the oil industry were at the level and it was unrealistic to get there without connections and uncles. The only factory in the city didn’t need electricians, at the elevator I was directly told: “Electricians are needed for the season, but not like you, but specialists with gigantic experience, so get out. ” In principle, if it were not for relatives in another city, at that stage it was already possible to throw out a diploma and go to the flour mill as a loader.

        In this regard, I was lucky to settle down a thousand kilometers from home in a small diesel power plant company. This is a great start: and good salaries – in 2009reached 25,000 R in a year, and learned a lot of new things while working with modern equipment.

        In recent years I have been working in an organization that deals with energy complexes. The customer puts forward the technical conditions, our task is to provide the ordered electricity at the border of the balance sheet. It is necessary to maintain the equipment for generating and distributing electricity.

        You work with power plant control panels – these are specific, but quite simply programmable computers. The task is to install the configuration, take logs, or determine the probable causes of problems. As an electrician, you fix everything electrical – from the substation to the last locker in the station. As an electrician, you disassemble and repair all kinds of electrical machines, of which there are enough. As a power engineer, you keep acts, documentation, monitor the condition of protective equipment and fire extinguishing equipment, answer all questions about what is happening at the facility, and help operators in their work. Along the way, you sling, and if necessary, you are also a loader.

        How much does an electrician earn

        We work everywhere – both in the Volga region and in the North. If you are on a business trip at a facility, then you can say that the working day does not end: you walk around the equipment, observe or repair. Nothing interesting. Of course, there are emergency works, then the day stretches until late at night.

        If you are at a repair base, then the morning begins with dragging the necessary tool to the equipment. You calmly repair the equipment, and closer to the second half of the day you sit down and fill out paperwork about what you have done.

        I get around 45,000-50,000 R depending on the region where I work. This is higher than the market income in my city: at one enterprise I was offered 30,000 R – and this is the ceiling for my industry. Basically, everything revolves around 18-25 thousand.

        I have no part-time jobs. This requires serious and long contracts, which is not available to private traders. Otherwise – mouse fuss. And you go with a volume of PTEEP and PUE to any store – how many violations will you find on the go? Small businesses are not interested in investing in engineering seriously. The general depreciation of engineering networks in our city is under 100%.

        My opinion: those who want a normal income should stay away from the exploitation of everything in the energy sector, and even more so from installation. Quickly leave health – and who needs you? Auto electricians – please, automated control systems – also stable, money and mustaches in sour cream. It seems that such specialists are needed not only in this country.

        The profession is dependent on the development and science intensity of the industry. While everything is working on conditions like “We can offer to go to the repair shop, there will definitely be 13 thousand.” Or: “Do you want to become a radio engineer? Three months of training, for this time the salary is 12,500 R, further – from working out. You can go to the power grid and dig into all sorts of hard and intense buzzing for astronomical 20,000 R. In the oil industry, by the way, there is also a “save yourself who can” situation: both a shortage of personnel and peculiarities of management. The profession is interesting, it develops dexterity of thinking and flexibility of hands, but in general, nobody needs it until the end of the world comes in the literal sense.         Introduction

        Long conversations in the kitchen with friends, colleagues from the industry and from universities prompted me to write this article. And also such a message from my bachelor’s degree student, he said that most of his friends are not going to enter the magistracy, why? when the bachelor’s degree is considered completed higher and you can go to work. The thought immediately came: “How so? Even after a few years ago there was a crazy competition for the master’s program!”

        I apologize if I offend anyone with this article. This is a personal opinion based on my experience. I invite you to the discussion and will listen with interest to your opinion.

        About the education system

        It is generally accepted that we have fundamental education in Russia. This is certainly true (although, in fact, according to the stories of acquaintances, all the same integrals are in European universities) , many departments and faculties have been able to maintain the quality of education since Soviet times (mainly thanks to old professors from Soviet times). Needless to say, I know a lot of young teachers (and I am very proud of their friendship) who are trying to spark interest among students, diversify the program, and universities even sometimes provide funds for the purchase of cool equipment.

        However, there is a generational gap among the teaching staff, as well as a huge separation of teachers from the industry. The system of payment to universities from the state did not contribute to motivation either, if earlier they paid according to the number of applicants who entered, now according to the number of students at the end of the year. Who in this situation will deduct?

        Of course, parents don’t go to universities (usually), but the picture is indicative. Students are much less respectful of teachers and lecturers. The generation, perhaps, is sure that they can get everything from the Internet, and the university is archaism, and they perceive education only as a means of getting a crust. After all, without a crust, they don’t even take on some simple (read non-core) work, such as a sales manager.

        In my time, students were worried before exams, the weak hoped to tell at least something for a three. Today, everyone knows that if you whine, you will get your top three, because for dops teachers it is an extra unpaid burden, and no one wants to listen to endless whining. So the value of the ratings has changed.

        Is education really necessary?

        In our decade of a huge flow of information on the Internet, it seems that you can learn anything. Someone may accuse me of being old-fashioned, but I believe that without a fundamental education + mentoring at work for a couple of years, one cannot become a qualified microwave engineer.

        I know many stories that, for example, in IT everything is somewhat different, and just because education in universities lags behind modern trends and even programming languages, education is not as important as self-education.

        In the field of radio engineering, this does not work (as far as I know, I will listen with interest to your stories in the comments). I believe that an engineer needs all these subjects of the university curriculum: higher mathematics, physics, chemistry of radio materials, integrals, difurs, telegraph equations, field-waves, Maxwell’s equations, theorems, etc.

        Let’s return to the mentoring at work mentioned above. It is known that a student must undergo an internship during training, and diplomas are most often written at specialized enterprises. Unfortunately, students are often attached to engineers (bosses) who a) are busy with their own affairs, projects, handing over work and they don’t care about students, for them this is a burden and b) do not have teaching talent, and sometimes elementary etiquette communication. This is where the student’s motivation to gain practical experience is killed.

        Work, salary

        After graduating from the university, the level of engineers’ salaries kills the remaining motivation. Here on Habré I often see a graph that happily reports “The average salary in IT is 130 tr.” And I get sad. Of course, the average salary is like the average for a hospital, it cannot be estimated by the average, but let’s go to hh. Programmer: from 80-100 tr, microwave engineer: from 35 tr.

        Yes, most companies in the industry offer cashier or order picker salaries. The lead engineer gets a little more, but, in my opinion, not commensurate with the required level of training, experience and responsibility.

        And the question is why to learn all these integrals, to understand the field strengths and tangential components at the interfaces between media??

        Prospects

        It seems to me that the only way for an engineer to survive is to find a small company that has the opportunity to receive mid-range R & D, R&D and / or orders for mass production (here you can work as a mass production support engineer), which will provide it (the company) until the end of life. Here the salary will be better (but not much) and the conditions are not as harsh as in a large enterprise, although there will be no new developments, so a good specialist will most likely become bored.

        A good alternative to development in terms of salary is to become an application engineer in a trading company.
