Patricia Bradley

Head Start Director

My Name is Patricia Bradley and I serve as Head Start Director.  I received my Bachelors of Science in Early Childhood Education and Leadership from Park University, Parkville Missouri in 2012, and my second Bachelors in Early Childhood Education with Teacher Certification in 2016 from Missouri Western State University St. Joseph Missouri, and currently working on my Masters in Educational Leadership.  I have been in the field of Early Learning for 30 plus years, serving as a preschool teacher, an elementary school teaching kindergarten through third grade, and as a program director.

It has always been my vision to nurture and cultivate the growing minds of young children. I feel with proper scaffolding the sky is not the limit to where their minds can journey.

To create a more collaborative, cohesive environment for children, families, and staff, as Head Start Director I desire to use the background knowledge gained in Instructional Leadership to provide unique insight into the Head Start program at Emmanuel Family Childcare and Development Center to help support the development, health and safety, and school readiness of our most vulnerable children.

Alexander Taylor

School Age Director

Alexander Taylor was born and raised in Kansas City MO. He graduated from Center High School in 2011 with honors and was named Scholar Athlete of the Year in the metro area by the KC Star. He then went on to continue his academics and athletics at Northwest Missouri State University where he graduated with Bachelors and Masters of Psychology. During his time at Northwest he played on 2 National Championship teams as well as helped to charter the Gamma Theta Gamma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc on the campus. He also was heavily involved in the social justice community at Northwest trying to create and foster inclusivity for all students, faculty, and staff on campus.

He then began his professional career with the Kansas State College Advising Corps at Washington High school in Kansas City KS. After that he worked for the University of Kansas GEAR UP program which provides early access and success to students through a variety of different programs. He then took a position with Metropolitan Community College as an Admissions Recruiter. In his most recent position he was an Impact Manager with City Year Kansas City which is an educational non-profit that provides educational services to the Kansas City Public School District.

Alexander is newly married with a 13 year old son. He enjoys his faith, family, and creating a better community he grew up in and is excited to begin working with a phenomenal organization like Emmanuel.

Denise Crawford

Director of Human Resources

My name is Denise Crawford. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance and a minor in Economics from the University of Missouri – Kansas City in May 2004. I have two children, a boy and a girl. As a mother, I feel that it is always important to treat children with a clear mind and kind heart. I enjoy working out, spending time with my children, cooking, and traveling the world. I chose to work in the field of childcare because I wanted to learn how to parent a child in a loving and healthy way.

It amazes me what young children are capable of doing. I am so happy to be part of the EFCDC family and will continue to do my best for all the children that walk through the door. My goal is to continue growing as a professional to give the children at EFCDC the best possible learning experiences that will help them develop and get ready not only for kindergarten but for life.
In my current position as Director of HR at Emmanuel Family & Child Development Center. I began working in childcare administration at Emmanuel Family & Child Development Center in January 1997.

As an HR Professional, some of my duties have included implementing the organization’s recruiting strategy, interviewing applicants, administering pre-employment tests, assisting with completing background investigations, promotions, terminations, conducting training sessions, administering on-the-job training programs, maintaining records of employee participation in all training and development programs, analyzing job duties, writing job descriptions, performing job evaluations and job analyses, resolving grievances, assisting with processing employee grievances, developing and administering health and safety programs, and maintaining accident records.

In addition to working on a Master’s in Leadership in Early Childhood degree, I also have begun working
on a Master’s in Human Resource Management. These degrees have prepared me to work effectively in a number of HR disciplines, with a focus on leadership, interpersonal and organizational behaviors, and approaches for managing and motivating employees.

Markeya Bragg

Pre K Cooperative Program Manager

Hi, my name is Markeya Bragg and I am the Pre K Cooperative Program Manager. My bio is coming soon!

Dorothea Kelley

Director of Health Services

Dorothea received her Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Missouri in Kansas City.  She has extensive experience in working in the nonprofit sector and over 25 years of service to children and families in the Kansas City Area.

Prior to coming to Emmanuel she taught Pre-K for 8 years and later returned to that center as Director for several years. She work at the Local Investment Commission as the Educare Coordinator where she had an essential role in providing training and support to the early childhood sector. She is passionate about providing exceptional services to the children and families that she serves. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time at Longview Lake, relaxing with friends, and helping emerging authors develop and publish their work.

Faith McMillan

AmeriCorps Program Director

My name is Faith McMillan and I am the AmeriCorps Program Director. I have a Bachelor’s of Science in Anthropology and a minor in Sociology from Missouri State University. I completed a service year as an AmeriCorps VISTA, and in turn, have become very passionate about National Service. The idea that one person can make such a big difference in a community is amazing to me. The amount of work that has been done with the AmeriCorps program is astronomical, and I have a lot of pride to be a part of it.

I am excited to be a part of this great community of Kansas City and to be here at Emmanuel and I know there are and will be some great AmeriCorps interns that will continue to make this organization thrive and help reach our goal of Kindergarten readiness and I look forward to meeting each and every one of them because when you serve at Emmanuel you are providing a child with a stepping stone to a future
they may not have been able to reach without you. Almost everyone can name a teacher or an adult that helped them when they were younger and changed their life for the better, and here at Emmanuel, we can be that for a child.

Exclusive Tommy Emanuel for Guitar College

Tommy Emmanuel’s concerts in Moscow are a real treat for hundreds of lovers and connoisseurs of guitar music. For Guitar College students, this is also a unique opportunity to get a kind of master class from one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world, to see and hear live what endless possibilities the instrument has when it falls into the hands of a real master.

Tommy Emmanuel is a global star of the first magnitude, a multiple Grammy Award winner, the holder of the titles “Best Guitarist” awarded to him by the most authoritative publications and juries. Tommy came to Moscow for two evenings during a world tour with the Acoustic & Electric program.

We met on the day of the concert. While the audience had just begun to gather in the lobby of the Moscow International House of Music, we had the opportunity to talk a little. Mr. Emmanuel turned out to be very charming, cheerful and easy to talk to. Emoticons in the text are unlikely to succeed in trying to convey the amazing atmosphere of the meeting, but they will try to express the general emotional mood :).

GC: Since there is very little time, I will ask the main question right away: what is the secret of the magical sound of your guitar? How do you achieve such a pure sound?

    TE: Practice! :))

GC: Exhaustive answer :). And yet, tell us a little about the tool, what gadgets do you use?

TE: Oh, you mean that. Well, there are no secrets here. Everything is very simple, now I will show (takes the guitar): this guitar has a pickup, inside there is a microphone. And here are the volume controls, bass, treble, mids and microphone, the volume of which I can control separately. Then I take this rubber plug and insert it into the resonator hole. And after that I can turn the sound on full power. You will hear all sounds very clearly. When I play, I try to play very cleanly so that the melody has its own voice.

GC: When I watched your videos, I always wondered what would happen if I got this plug?

TE: UUUUUUAAAA, very loud feedback :). Don’t forget, I said I turn the mic on full, as loud as possible.

GC: More about your videos: when you watch live recordings, it seems that you use thick strings – at least 12 strings, while you manage the bands so smartly! Do you have different strings for different occasions, and you change guitars quickly depending on the composition, or were we wrong about the thickness?

TE: I play 12x-54x – but those are thin strings! :). I can easily pull any bands. Look here (playing). I don’t use any thinner strings. Surprised? If it seems to you that it is difficult, train your hands more.

GC: How many guitars do you carry with you at all times?

TE: Today I plan to play both acoustic and electric guitar, so I have five instruments with me. I still have the same electric guitars as many years ago. Here, for example, is the good old Fender. I really appreciate this guitar. When I perform a solo with an acoustic program, I take three guitars with me: this one, which I just played for you, another one of the same, but with a different tuning. And the third is of a slightly different type, with a standard tuning lowered by one and a half tones. This gives its own coloring, I get a special deep sound.

GC: When you see your guitar, it becomes immediately clear that it has been with you for a long time. Is this your favourite? Judging by her appearance, she has been serving you for more than a dozen years).

TE: It is). She is many, many years old. Plus, I play it with a drum brush, so she gets it. When I play guitar with percussion, I imitate a drum part. For example, with my right hand I play fours: one, two, three, four … With my left hand I play threes: one, two, three. We combine. I will add chords – as if I have three volumes. Everything depends on the imagination. It’s simple!

GC: Tell us a little about your gig today. It seems that you are coming to Moscow for the first time with a group?

TE: Yes, it is true. The musicians who will perform with me today have arrived in Russia for the first time. For them, this is the first big serious tour outside of Australia. Today we will present a new program “Electric & Acoustic”, with which concerts are planned throughout Europe, and then in America. This is a big tour in support of my double album Little By Little, which came out last year.

GC: Tommy, do you have an absolute ear for music?

TE: I’ve been asked this many times and I never know what to say. What does absolute musical pitch mean? If I hear a song, I understand what key it is in. When I hear “Yesterday” by The Beatles, I know it’s Fa. (Singing) Ha-ha, the voice sat down. Even if I can’t sing, I know what notes are there). What’s really important to making music is writing songs. Now I will explain what I mean: when I compose a work for the guitar, I think of it as a song, I don’t think through the entire guitar part at once in detail, but I imagine how the composition would sound if it were performed by a singer. It is very important to get a good tune. There really is a secret here.

GC: Where do you find inspiration for new songs? Maybe in traditional Australian culture, its myths and legends? Or maybe in classical art? Or are ideas for new compositions always taken from personal experience, experiences, impressions?

TE: Whatever the song is inspired by, each song is very personal. This is my experience, exactly what you said, it is. A lot comes from travelling, so I wrote “Mombasa” in Mombasa when I was in Kenya. You know, Africa made a huge impression on me.

GC: Do you need a special setting to create a new composition?

TE: No, I compose music wherever inspiration strikes: trains, buses, airports, dressing rooms or hotels.

GC: One of my favorite things is “Questions”. I read in one of your interviews that you composed it very quickly, literally played it from beginning to end in one go and never changed it again. But it took a long time to record, you even put it off for a while.

TE: Thanks, I’m glad to hear that “Questions” is your favorite song. This composition is associated for me with a wonderful period in my life, these are very important and wonderful feelings, I wanted to capture them. Yes, with each melody it develops in its own way, sometimes I record the first time, but it happens that after listening, I am not satisfied. Then I just put the thing aside for another occasion – let it ripen. You know, “Questions” is a song that came to me by itself. I didn’t search, I didn’t try to find something – the melody just appeared by itself, I had only to express it. The main thing is that at such a moment the guitar is at hand).

GC: Tell us a little about your signature harmonics.

TE: My love for harmonics comes from Chet Atkins. Let me show you a small example. So what I’m doing is playing harmonics with my thumb using a plectrum. And with the rest of my fingers I play open strings. Now take the D9 chord and play in sequence: 4th, 6th, 3rd, 5th, 2nd, 4th, 1st, 3rd. If I want to diversify a little, I can add a hammer. Try to practice like this.

GC: When magic is so close, it’s incredible!

TE: Oh, the guitar is an amazing instrument, there are so many ways to make a beautiful sound!

GC: Often, students who encounter difficulties in studying music theory begin to doubt that a serious musical education is really necessary. The key argument: here, they say, there are great guitarists who don’t even know the notes. Tommy Emmanuel himself did not graduate from universities, but became one of the best guitarists in the world and bears the title of “certified guitar player”.

TE: Yes, I do not have, as you say, a fundamental higher education. But I have been educating myself all my life. A vocational school can help systematize knowledge and save time.
