Who is cooler in the City of Angels? – Fan Relations Department – Blogs
This post was written by Sports. ru user, every fan can start writing (you can do it here).
I hope you have read my previous reviews on MLS clubs and their work with fans. If not, here are some links: New York City FC, Atlanta United, Seattle Sounders. From these reviews, it is clear that the league members act in the same vein and events are organized according to approximately the same template. Therefore, in today’s review, I will try to diversify the format a little. Let’s compare two clubs from the famous Californian city of Los Angeles – Los Angeles Galaxy and Los Angeles FC. nine0003
Round 1. History of the club.
Galaxy was one of 10 clubs that participated in the first season of MLS in 1996. The only club that has not changed its name since then. Five-time league champion. One of only two clubs in the US to have won the CONCACAF Champions League (similar to the European Champions League).
FC Los Angeles has been playing in the MLS since 2018, in 2019 they took their first trophy – the Supporters Shield, which is awarded for the most points in the regular season (Galaxy has 4 such cups). nine0003
Thus, the score is 1:0 in favor of Galaxy.
Round 2. Stadium and attendance.
Galaxy Stadium, located in Carson, 16 kilometers from Los Angeles itself, is marked in red on the diagram. It was built in 2003 and can accommodate 27,000 spectators. Club attendance in 2019 – 23205 spectators (86% occupancy).
Banc of California Stadium, where FC Los Angeles hosts opponents, is marked in yellow. The stadium is brand new, built in 2018 (due to construction delays, the entry of the club itself into the MLS was delayed), it can accommodate 22,000 spectators and was filled on average by 95% (20951 viewers). The stadium is located more conveniently than its competitors and closer to the city center, although the very concept of “center” is rather vague in Los Angeles and without a car you still won’t get anywhere comfortably.
However, the score becomes equal – 1:1.
Round 3. Work with fans.
Here the criteria for evaluation are more subjective. I decided to compare club websites, fan events and social media followers. Galaxy will be the first. nine0003
Very cool initiative during the pandemic. The club website contains a list of shops, cafes, restaurants and other things, which are divided into categories: club partners, recommendations from fans, recommendations from club players and establishments that are owned by Galaxy fans. Contact details for ordering delivery.
The club is also involved in a series of charity initiatives and fundraising for those affected during the quarantine. Donations for food, support for doctors, charity FIFA tournaments, an auction where you can win an autographed Chicharito T-shirt are organized. At the moment he is the main star of the club. nine0003
During the forced pause, the club pages showcase the team’s best matches and victorious finals. Also, significant moments of the club’s history are presented in the form of a comic book and it looks something like this:
This season, for the most ardent fans, the grandstand behind the goal, which is called the Victoria Block, was re-equipped. The seats there are now standing, and additional bars have been organized next to the podium. A small promotional video shows the atmosphere:
The club cooperates with 11 elementary schools within the framework of the Champions project, which are located within a radius of 5 miles from the stadium. About 5,000 children annually participate in various activities related to football in one way or another, both at school and at the stadium itself, along with Galaxy players and coaches. The most active participants will be marked at pregame shows.
Moving on to Los Angeles Football Club. The main page of the site is filled to the limit with high-quality video content – a question-answer with a Wright-Phillips club player, a review of the best matches of past years (by the way, there is a good idea here: they show not a full match, but a compressed 30-minute version), reviews of battles in electronic football from EA Sports, commercials calling to stay at home and save your own and others’ lives. And this is not surprising, because one of the sponsors of the club is Youtube, the site’s logo is presented on the game T-shirts right on the chest. nine0003
Before the match, a special fan zone awaits all fans with entertainment, games, DJ and alcoholic drinks:
After warming up, the fans go to one of the stands of their brand new stadium. For example, standing places like these:
Naturally, the club is not limited only to the day of the match – work with the local community is ongoing. If the Galaxy targeted elementary schools, then Los Angeles focuses on high school students, and those who are at risk. The Young Leader program has been organized for them, within the framework of which a young person receives a mentor from the club’s employees, the opportunity to train under the guidance of specialists, and even the opportunity to receive a paid internship from FC partners. nine0003
In general, both clubs are equal here. And the winner will be determined by the number of subscribers in social networks.
