Fishburne History – Virginia Military Boarding School

Virginia’s Oldest Private Military School \ Waynesboro Virginia

Fishburne Military School (FMS) is a private military boarding school for boys in Waynesboro, Virginia, USA. It was founded by James A. Fishburne in 1879 and is one of the oldest military schools in the country.

James A. Fishburne was born in Waynesboro, Virginia on April 10, 1850. An independent and resourceful young man, by the age of sixteen he had earned enough money to attend Washington College (now Washington and Lee University). After graduating in 1870, he began a teaching career that took him to North Carolina and Kentucky. By 1878 he had saved enough money to open a school and returned to Waynesboro with his fiancee to fulfill his dream. With the help of his sister in 1879He opened a day school called The Waynesboro High School on Main Street. A year later, Professor Fishburne began building his house on the hill where Fishburne Military School is now located. By 1882, the house was completed—the first in the area with running water and a bath—and the school moved to its current location.

1882 \ Start of construction of wooden barracks.

In 1882 the school was named Fishburne Home School and construction began on wooden barracks. Over the next few years, the school took on much of its military character, becoming the Fishburne Military School. This approach provided a disciplined environment conducive to learning. Cadets learned their rights and privileges, as well as their duties and responsibilities. Professor Fishburne intended to prepare his students physically and mentally, and to prepare them “for college, university, or practical life.” At 189In 7, Fishburne Military School became one of the first two military boarding schools in Virginia to receive accreditation from the strict Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). More than a century later, Fishburne boasts unrivaled SACS membership and SACS accreditation.

1879-1921 \ Plans for a fireproof school

From 1879 to 1916 the school was owned. However, it was clear to Professor Fishburne that in order for the school to continue to occupy a leading position in the secondary education system, a modern fireproof facility was required. He invited local businessmen to invest in a private equity corporation that would purchase the school and finance the necessary improvements. The school was registered at 1916 and is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

1921-1924 \ Professor Fishburne passes the baton

On the third anniversary of the armistice in 1921, Professor Fishburne died peacefully at his home. His last conscious words were a prayer for “my boys.” He was succeeded by Morgan H. Hudgins, a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, who joined the school in 1901 as Commandant of the Cadets and Associate Principal to Professor Fishburne. Hudgins guided the school through periods of growth and significant development in its military training. During his thirty-one years as director of the FMS, he achieved great success in academic, military and extracurricular activities. At 1924, the Fishburne Corps of Cadets was recognized as an honorary military training institution under the US Army Reserve Officer Training (ROTC) program. Since then, Fishburne has never missed that honor and is the only junior ROTC school in the country with such an unbeaten record.

1940s Civic leaders save Fishburne

By the end of the 1940s, the school suffered financial losses and the shareholders were unwilling to invest the private capital needed to make the school successful. At 19In 1951, after a loss, the shareholders sold the school to the city, who intended to turn it into a Waynesboro city building. However, local community leaders considered Fishburne Military School a valuable public asset and an integral part of Waynesborough’s heritage. Together with a small group of friends and alumni, they bought the school from the city and established the Fishburne-Hudgins Educational Foundation, a non-profit organization that would run the school in perpetuity. In 2021, the Foundation turned 70 years old.

Recent years

Fishburne has seen enrollment differences in recent years depending on the national and regional economic climate, the public’s perception of military boarding schools, and the growing number of alternatives to public schools. Over the past twenty years, enrollment has averaged between 130 and 180 students. The Covid-19 pandemic has affected the population of the boarding house to some extent. The new Fishburne branding study will leverage and promote the school’s size and product with the goal of enrolling 165-175 boarding students.
