ANTIOCHE SCHOOL • Big Russian Encyclopedia

Authors: AI Sidorov

ANTIOCHE SCHOOL, a direction of theological thought in Antioch . Existed during the 4th-5th centuries. and developed in parallel with the Alexandrian school, and sometimes in opposition to it. The difference between schools can be traced in two main ways. moments: in the exegetical method and Christological teaching. Founder of A. sh. – Ep. Lucian, around whom a group of students formed, including several. future representatives of Arianism (Arius himself, Eusebius of Nicomedia, and others). The heyday of the school refers to the con. 4th–5th centuries (Diodorus of Tarsus, John Chrysostom, Theodore of Mopsuestia and Theodoret of Cyrus). A blow to the reputation of the school was caused by the development by Nestorius and his supporters (see Nestorianism) of some aspects of the Christological teaching of A. sh. – up to the non-recognition of the term “Virgin Mary”. Nestorianism was condemned at the 3rd Ecumenical Council (431), which subsequently led to the predominance of the Alexandrian trend in Orthodox theology. For the first time, the synthesis of the Christological premises of the two schools was realized in the “Tomos” of Pope Leo the Great (449), which became one of the sources of the definition of faith adopted at the 4th Ecumenical Council in Chalcedon (451). Thanks to this definition of faith, the most valuable aspects of Antiochian Christology were organically incorporated into Orthodox dogma.

Exegese A. sh. proceeded from the principle that the text should be explained “from itself”. In contrast to the priority of the spiritual meaning of Origen and some other Alexandrian church writers, who emphasize the “timeless” and “eternal” in Holy Scripture, A. sh. sought to focus on historical approach. The earthly life of Christ and its human realities occupied an important place in their theological reasoning. Hence, some of the Antiochians (Diodorus of Tarsus, Theodore of Mopsuestia) strive to observe “symmetry” in Christology, i.e. equal proportions of the ratio of two natures in Christ – divine and human. They specifically emphasized that the Word of God is a man named Jesus. The extreme conclusions of this thesis brought some of them (in particular, Theodore and Nestorius) very close to the recognition of two subjects in Christ, i.
