Playing Education – Northern Worker

I was able to see how it works during an internship in Pensacola, Florida. Global Lörnig Academy is the name of the local elementary school, created on the basis of three small schools in the microdistrict that I ended up in.
– There were some issues with the school merger, but it’s been a great experience. We are blessed to have wonderful boys and girls who try very hard,” said Principal Judy La Bounty.
In America, not only the name separates the primary school from the secondary school: it is an independent building with its own staff of teachers. And the vast majority of them, like us, are women. This is where the similarity seems to end. The class teachers here change every year, and learning is more like a game.
Global Academy is a typical general education school, but has additional programs. Here the focus is on the study of the world and leadership. Americans themselves scold their education for the fact that people do not know the geography of their native country well and easily talk about foreign policy without understanding its realities. Here, children study all the continents of the world, from Antarctica in the preparatory group to North America in the fifth grade. In this wing, where first-graders go through Asia, they recently celebrated the Chinese New Year. Therefore, a huge monster of a red snake hangs under the ceiling.
There is a real museum in the school lobby: batik from Morocco, a robe from Uzbekistan, a Spanish doll, a Chinese carpet, Egyptian papyrus are in display cases. It was given to the school by parents or guests. They try to include the customs and traditions of the regions in the learning process, periodically arrange skype meetings with schools in other countries.
About 800 children from 4 to 12 years old study at the school. Most are busy from 7.15 to 14.15. The guys go through reading, mathematics, writing and social sciences, they do not study a foreign language. There is also an extension. Reading and math help is available twice a week after school. Energy-saving technologies are studied on the example of solar panels located on the roof. Greens are grown in the garden, and when the weather is cold, they take out a telescope and study the constellations.
In a regular class there are 18 students (as students are called) and one teacher. Educators use handheld microphones to make sure every child hears the same way. Interactive whiteboards, laptops and iPads are also used in the work. There is a reading corner and a special area for students with disabilities.
It’s funny how children write tests: everyone is given a cardboard screen so that they don’t peep at their neighbor. In the next room, the results are summed up: the teacher calls the last name, everyone is clapped. The know-how of another teacher is balloons under the ceiling. They are inflated for the success of children, and at the end of the year they solemnly burst. The find of the librarian is curious: books are marked with special coasters … made of shoes. So children distinguish the complexity of books and topics.
The school has computer centers where you can come after classes, parents can visit the resource room and work on computers. Computers, as it turned out, are not at home for everyone. There is also a room where you can pick up shoes, clothes: everything is collected for donations or public money.
The music room and the art room are not typical of American public schools. In music, children study solfeggio, learn to play the piano. In the art room, plastic bottles and colored paper are used to create 3D origami. Teacher Megan Breeze, upon learning that I am from Russia, immediately shows drawings of second-graders studying Europe. On them are our nesting dolls. True, in an American way.
– We also have a Spiderman nesting doll and a Captain America nesting doll, – the teacher smiles.
Parents praise the Global Academy for the technology it is loaded with. And scolded for the lack of interest of teachers in the work. It seemed to me that the learning process is more aimed at making learning interesting, rather than deep knowledge. Perhaps there is something to take into account. But is such a system of education suitable for us?
