School Education in New Zealand

updated on by Andrey

There are three types of schools in New Zealand:

  1. Mainstream public schools, attended by more than 80% of all children.
  2. Integrated schools, which are also public. But they can be controlled by religious denominations or use special and additional teaching methods.
  3. Private schools. nine0014

All children aged 6 to 16 in New Zealand are required to attend school. It does not matter what visa and what immigration status they are in. The exception is tourists. Also, in some cases, distance learning is possible.

Primary School 1st to 6th grade

Primary school students study subjects in the New Zealand National Curriculum. Subjects studied include: English, arts, health and physical education, languages, mathematics and statistics, natural sciences, social sciences and technology. nine0007

Performance is monitored on a regular weekly basis. Every quarter there is an assessment (check) of students’ knowledge of reading, writing, and mathematics for compliance with the knowledge approved by the national standards of New Zealand.

Secondary School 7th to 13th grade

Depending on the type of school, Secondary education can take place in two school stages: Intermediate School and Secondary School

  • Intermediate School
    Grades 7 – 8
Intermediate Schools are a bridge between elementary and high school.
There is a lot of controversy on this topic: what part of school education do transitional schools still belong to. Some argue that primary education begins in grade 1 and continues through grade 8. Others believe that elementary school ends in the 6th grade.
In fact, 7th and 8th grades are offered either in the primary or in a separate transitional school. nine0014
  • Secondary School
    Grades 9 – 13
In secondary schools, also known as high schools or colleges, students study and choose advanced subjects in addition to the required subjects. The list of disciplines is very extensive. And students are offered such subjects as: tourism, exact sciences, trading specialties, computer science, etc.
The primary goal of a New Zealand high school student is to work towards a National Certificate of Education (NCEA). nine0042 Some New Zealand secondary schools also offer Cambridge International Examinations and International Baccalaureate standards.

New Zealand’s compulsory schooling program consists of the full Primary (Primary) grades 1 to 6 and the partial Secondary (primary) grades 7 to 11. At the end of which the graduate student receives the NCEA Level 1 Certificate (National Certificate of Education Achievement). nine0007

Holders of this NCEA Level 1 certificate may continue their education further at Secondary School in grades 12 and 13, or go to a full-time job.

Class 12

Upon graduation, the student is expected to receive an NCEA Level 2 certificate, which, in addition to school education, already includes components of primary higher education. This gives him the opportunity to leave schooling. And start studying under the L4 (diploma) programs of vocational training in college and institutes of technology. nine0007

Grade 13

Upon graduation, the student is expected to receive an NCEA Level 3 certificate. This does not limit the student in any way in the further choice of a program of study and specialty in all educational institutions in New Zealand, as well as in the world.

All public schools maintain the same standards and conditions of education. But not all schools have the right to accept foreign students. When enrolling a foreign student, our agency will provide you with a choice of schools and help you assess the expected level / grade of enrollment. nine0007
