AMERICA’S MOST ACCREDITED

We’re so proud!

Nationally only 10% of daycares are accredited – nearly 100% of our learning centers are. That’s a big difference,
and that means KinderCare kids are getting the very best. Here’s why.

SCHOOL-READY

What Learning Looks Like

Our talented early-childhood teachers set kids down the path toward becoming lifelong learners in a positive, safe, and nurturing environment.

Eagan Knowledge Beginnings Programs

Infant Programs (6 weeks–1 year)

Leaving your baby in someone else’s care is a big step. Everyone at our
centers—most importantly, our naturally gifted infant teachers—will work with
you to make sure the transition goes smoothly. When you step into our infant
classroom, you’ll see how much we want your infant to feel safe, loved, and
ready to explore their world.

Toddler Programs (1–2 Years)

Everything in our toddler classroom is designed for little explorers. That’s
because a lot is going on at this age. When your child is wandering all over the
place, that means they’re learning and discovering new things every day. We’ll
help them explore their interests (and find new ones!) as they play and learn.

Preschool Programs (3–4 Years)

This age is all about expression, when kids really start to form their own ideas
about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our
preschool classroom, your child will explore science experiments, create
artwork, and play pretend—all the skills needed for their big next step:
kindergarten!

Prekindergarten Programs (4–5 Years)

When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and
writing displayed around the room. Labels are everywhere to help kids connect
letters with words. You’ll also see pictures on the walls that reflect the families
in our community. Your child will also deepen their knowledge in language,
math, science, Spanish, and social skills.

Before- and After-School Programs (5–12 Years)

You can count on us to provide reliable care for your school-ager while you’re
at work, with safe transportation from our center to your child’s school and
back! Whether your child wants to start a drama club, build a volcano, or
create a comic book, they will have a place to follow their dreams. Your child
will start and end the day with a whole lot of fun!

School Break Programs (preschool, prekindergarten, and school-age)

Winter break, spring break, summer break—when school’s out (but you still need to work), you
can count on KinderCare to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that’s focused
on fun. We welcome children ages 5–12 during school break times and make sure they have a
sensational, screen-free experience they won’t forget.

Participating Child Care Aware Center

KinderCare partners with Child Care Aware® of America to offer fee assistance for
Active Duty military families and flexible support to fit their needs when care at a Child
Development Center on the installation is not available.

Learning Adventures – Enrichment Program

Cooking Academy™ (3 – 12 Years)

In Cooking Academy, kids learn new recipes from cultures around the world and
develop a healthy relationship with food. They’ll whip up everything from Southwest
rainbow lettuce wraps to pumpkin muffins, building their skills in STEM, communication,
and more along the way. And yes—little chefs get to eat their culinary creations!

Music Explorers™ (2 – 4 Years)

KinderCare families are already giving a standing ovation to our newest Learning
Adventures program: Music Explorers! Kids will learn to sing, move, listen, play
instruments, and even create their own tunes. Our original curriculum blends math,
science, social studies, literacy, and mindfulness (think yoga!) for a uniquely KinderCare
way of learning the foundations of music.

Phonics Adventures® (2 – 4 Years)

Learning how to read is a whole lot of fun at KinderCare! We help kids grow to love
books and words (and get ready for kindergarten) in our Phonics Adventures program.
From discovering the basics of vowels to practicing poetry, kids learn all about letters
and sounds in small-group lessons made just for their age group. (Bonus: Kids who
attend our phonics program are more prepared than their peers for school—and we
have the data to prove it.)

STEM Innovators (3-8 Years)

You’ve probably heard a lot about how important STEM education is for your child, but
what does that really mean? Our STEM Innovators program takes kids’ natural ability to
make sense of the world and applies it to robotics, chemistry, coding, geology, and
more. While your child experiments, they’ll discover how to use technology to do
amazing things!

Our Teachers

We’re the only company in early childhood education to select teachers based on natural talent. Being a great educator isn’t enough though.
KinderCare teachers are also amazing listeners, nurturers, boo-boo fixers, and smile-makers. Put more simply,
we love our teachers and your child will, too.

Meet just a few of our amazing KinderCare teachers!

A KINDERCARE TEACHER WITH

An Artist’s Heart

“My classroom is full of art!” says Mary Annthipie-Bane, an award-winning early childhood educator at KinderCare. Art and creative expression, she says, help children discover who they really are.

We put our best-in-class teachers in a best-in-class workplace. We’re so proud to have been named one of Gallup’s 37 winners of the Great Workplace Award.
When you put great teachers in an engaging center, your children will experience
an amazing place to learn and grow.

Family Stories

Don’t take our word for it. Hear what our families have to say about our amazing center!

  • I can’t imagine trusting anyone (or anywhere) else with my child. The minute we walk into the building and my daughter sees her teacher(s) she lights up and can’t wait to get a morning snuggle (which is always instantaneous). All of the staff (truly, ALL) love the kids as if they were their own, and there is no greater feeling as a parent. I know she is safe, she is loved, and well cared for the entire day. One of the many unique things about KB – they allow and encourage the infants to explore and play (there are no swings or bouncers). The staff is truly hands on with the kids, all day. Lastly, I really appreciate that we are greeted the minute we walk in the doors. The managers and directors know all the kids by name, and take the time to get to know the children individually. It’s pretty great!

    Leslie – KinderCare Parent
  • My toddler has been at Knowledge Beginnings for one year, and I have always felt like he is extremely well cared for at KB. All of the teachers as well as Jon and the other office employees are very involved with each child individually and can tell you about their day the moment you walk in the door to pick them up (good/crabby/napped well/activities/new skills/etc. ).

The teachers are also great listeners and advice-givers. They will follow special instructions you have for your children, as well as answer questions or give you advice if you’re asking for it. As a new parent, I found this really helpful because they can recommend ways to get thru challenges, start something new, etc.

I also really like the curriculum-based approach they take to childcare. While they ensure the kids learn thru playtime and interaction with others, they also incorporate different educational themes each month. I love seeing all of the things my son learns and hearing about all of the creative activities he does.

Most importantly, my son comes home happy and smiling, and is excited to go back the next day. So I know he’s having fun, learning, and feels cared for. I would recommend KB without hesitation!

    Ali – KinderCare Parent
  • We absolutely love having our children attend Knowledge Beginnings in Eagan! The teachers and staff are fabulous. I leave my two children in the hands of dedicated, loving, and nurturing teachers each day. My girls are always excited to go each day. The facility is safe, secure, and clean and they have a great curriculum they use to focus on those early learning skills and standards. Without hesitation, I would highly recommend this center.

    Beth – KinderCare Parent

Read “Stories” – Egan Greg – Page 1

Greg Igan

9000 don’t even want to talk about it?

Diana rolled away from me and froze in the fetal position:

— We discussed this two weeks ago. Nothing has changed since then, so what’s the point of talking again?

We spent the evening with my friend, his wife and their six month old daughter. Now I could not close my eyes without again seeing the expression of delight and amazement on that pretty baby face, without hearing the sound of her innocent laughter, without experiencing again that strange dizziness that I felt when Rosalie, her mother, said:

— Of course you can hold her.

I hoped that this visit would change Diana’s mood. Instead, he multiplied a thousandfold my desire to become a father, turning into almost physical pain, and left her indifferent.

Okay, so we’re biologically programmed to love children. So what? This can be said about ninety percent of human activity. We are biologically programmed to enjoy the sexual act, but no one seems to mind, no one complains about being tricked by evil nature into doing something they would never have done otherwise. After all, if one were to lay out in detail, step by step, the physiological basis of the enjoyment of listening to Bach, wouldn’t that enjoyment appear to be a primitive reaction, a biological fraud, an experience as empty as coming from a euphoric drug?

— Don’t you feel anything when she smiles?

— Frank, shut up and let me sleep.

— If we had a daughter, I would take care of her. I would take six months off to look after her.

– Wow, half a year, very generous! And then what?

– Then more. I can quit my job altogether if you want.

– And what to live on? I won’t support you for the rest of my life! Yes, to hell! You still then, I suppose, and want to get married, huh?

– Well, I won’t stop working. When she is old enough, we can send her to kindergarten. Why are you so opposed? Millions of people have children, this is a common thing, why do you invent all these obstacles?

– Because I don’t want a child. Understand? That’s all.

I looked at the dark ceiling for a bit before saying in a not quite even voice:

“You know, I could bear it myself. Nowadays, it is absolutely safe, there are examples of thousands of successfully completed male pregnancies. After a couple of weeks, the placenta and embryo can be taken from you and attached to the outer wall of my intestines.

– You are sick.

– If necessary, they even make it so that both fertilization and early development take place in a test tube. Then all you have to do is become an egg donor.

– I don’t want a baby. Born by you, worn by me, adopted, bought, stolen, whatever. Shut up and let me sleep.

* * *

When I came home the next evening, the apartment was dark, quiet and empty. Diana has moved out; the note said that she had gone to live with her sister. This happened, of course, not only because of the children; Lately, I’ve actually started to annoy her.

I sat in the kitchen drinking, wondering if there was any way to convince her to come back. I knew I was being selfish: without constant, conscious effort, I tended to ignore other people’s feelings. And I never seemed to be able to sustain this effort long enough. But I tried, didn’t I? What more could she expect?

When I got really drunk, I called her sister, who didn’t even invite her. I hung up the phone and looked around for something to break, but then all my energy ran out and I lay down on the floor right there. I tried to cry but it didn’t work, so I fell asleep instead.

* * *

The essence of biological stimuli is that we can easily deceive them, we have learned to satisfy our bodies by eliminating the evolutionary causes of actions that give us pleasure. Non-nutritious food can look great and taste great. Sex that doesn’t result in pregnancy can still be just as good. I think in the past, an animal was the only possible substitute for a child. Buy a cat – that’s what I had to do.

* * *

Two weeks after Diana left me, I bought a set of “Cutie” through an electronic payment system from Taiwan. Well, when I say “Taiwan”, I mean that the first three digits of the payment system code mean Taiwan. Sometimes, it means something geographically real, but usually it doesn’t. Most of these small companies have no premises, they are just megabytes of data that are manipulated by the software of the international trading network. The customer contacts their local hub, selects a company and product code, and if a bank or credit balance is confirmed, orders are placed with various component manufacturers, transport offices, and assembly firms. The company itself does not move anything, only data.

Special mention: I bought a cheap copy. Pirate, clone, analogue, counterfeit version, call it whatever you like. Of course, I felt a little guilty, and a little greedy, but who can afford to pay five times as much for an authentic, made in Salvador, American product? Yes, it’s a steal from the people who spent time and money researching and developing this product, but what are they waiting for when they hit that price? Why should I pay for the cocaine preferences of a bunch of California speculators who made a lucky bet on some biotech corporation ten years ago? I’d rather my money go to some fifteen year old hacker from Taiwan or Hong Kong or Manila who does this so his siblings don’t have to fuck rich tourists to survive.

Do you see what wonderful aspirations I had?

“Cute” has a respectable pedigree. Remember the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls?[1] Birth certificate included, birth defects optional. The trouble was that these things just were, and realistic robotics for a doll is simply too expensive to be practical. Remember the Baby video? Computer cribs? Perfect realism, so long as you don’t want to open the glass and caress the baby.

Of course I didn’t want “Cute”! I wanted a real baby! But how? I was thirty-four years old, recently another relationship ended unsuccessfully. What choice did I have?

I could renew my search for a woman who (a) wants to have children, (b) doesn’t have any yet, and (c) is able to endure living with shit like me for more than a couple of years.

I could try to ignore or suppress my unreasonable desire to be a father. Intellectually (in every sense) I had no need for a child; in fact, I could easily come up with half a dozen impeccable arguments against accepting such a burden. But it was as if the force (shamelessly humanized) that had previously directed me to have unrestrained sex finally found out about birth control, and so cleverly decided to shift my attention one link further down the messed up causal chain. Like a teenager constantly dreaming about sex, so I constantly dreamed about fatherhood.

Or.

Oh yes! Praise to modern technology! Nothing compares to the third possibility – to create the illusion of freedom of choice!

I say:

– Well, I did what you wanted. But everything I said before still applies. Let me live and I will make you rich. Million a year. At least.

He shakes his head.

– You are fantasizing. Where should I go? Finn will find me in a week.

– You won’t have to go anywhere. I would leave the country – and I would transfer money to your orbital account.

Yes? Even if you do this, what use is this money to me? I couldn’t risk wasting them.

– Once you have enough, you could buy some protection. Buy some independence. Get rid of Finn.

— No.

He laughs again.

— Why are you still looking for a way out? Do not you understand? There is no need for this.

The implant must be releasing nanomachines now, strengthening the links between my brain and the tiny optical processor whose neural network embodies Carter’s bizarre beliefs. Once – and his insanity will fit into my brain. But it doesn’t matter – I can always delete it: it’s the easiest thing in the world. If this is still what I want .

I say:

– Nothing is needed. You don’t need to kill me. We can still both get out of here. Why are you acting like you don’t have a choice?

He shakes his head.

– You are delirious.

– Fuck you! Listen to me! All Finn has is money. I can destroy him if that’s what it takes. From anywhere in the world! “I don’t even know if I’ve lied more in my life. Can I do it? To save your life?

Carter finally speaks softly:

— No.

I don’t know what to say. I have no more arguments, no more arguments. I wanted to turn around and run away, but I can’t. I can’t believe I would run away – and I can’t get him to pull the trigger a moment sooner.

The sunlight is dazzling, I close my eyes from the bright light. I haven’t given up yet. I’ll pretend the implant didn’t work – that’ll embarrass him and buy me a few more minutes.

And then?

A wave of dizziness overwhelms me. I stagger, but I can hardly keep my balance. I stand looking at my shadow on the ground, swaying gently, feeling incredibly light.

Then I look up, squinting.

— I…

Carter says

– You will die. I’m going to shoot you in the head. You understand me?

– Yes.

— But this is not the end for you. Not the end is very important. You believe it, don’t you?

I nod reluctantly.

– Yes.

— You know that you will die, but you are not afraid?

The light hurts my eyes and I close them again. I laugh wearily.

— You are mistaken, I am still afraid. You lied to me, right? You are shit. But I understand. Everything you said makes sense.

And he does it . All my objections seem absurd, completely ill-conceived. It resents me that Carter was right—but I can’t pretend that my unwillingness to believe him was the product of anything but shortsightedness and self-deception. That it took a neural implant to let me see the obvious. And this only confirms how discouraged I must have been.

I stand with my eyes closed, feeling the warmth of the sun on the back of my head. I’m waiting.

— You don’t want to die… but you know that’s the only way out? Do you accept it? He seems to refuse to believe me, as if he found my instant transformation too good to be true.

I shout to him:

— Fuck you!.. Come on! Let’s end this!

He is silent for a while. Then a soft thud, and the sound of a fall.

For some reason, insects no longer land on my hands and face.

After a moment, I open my eyes and drop to my knees, shivering. For a while, I lose control of myself: I sob, hit the ground with my fists, tear handfuls of grass, yell at the birds for their silence.

Then I get up and go to the corpse.

He believed in everything, he claimed, but he still needed something else. More than an abstract hope that someday, somewhere on the planet, a 9 will fall0106 become him – by pure chance. He needs someone holding the same beliefs right before his eyes at the moment of death—someone else who knew he was about to die, someone who was just as afraid as he was.

And what should I believe?

I look up at the sky, and the memories I’m struggling with, previously missing, begin to tumble in my skull. From lazy childhood holidays to the very last weekend I spent with my ex-wife and son, the same heartbreaking blue runs through them all. Unites them all.

Isn’t it?

I look down at Carter, kick him, and whisper:

— Who died today? Tell me. Who really died ?

CUTE

Story

Greg Egan. The Cutie, 1989.

Some people have a biological need for children. But in the world of the near future, it is becoming increasingly difficult to start a family and own relatives or even adopted children. It was for such people that “Cuties” were invented – creatures artificially created from the DNA of their parent, very similar to human children, but programmed for early death and lack of intellectual development. The protagonist also decided to get Cutie, but things didn’t go quite as expected…

— Why don’t you even want to talk about it?

Okay, so we are biologically programmed to love children.

– I don’t want a baby. Born by you, worn by me, adopted, bought, stolen, whatever. Shut up and let me sleep.

The essence of biological incentives is that we can easily deceive them, we have learned to satisfy our bodies by eliminating the evolutionary causes of actions that give us pleasure. Non-nutritious food can look great and taste great. Sex that doesn’t result in pregnancy can still be just as good. I think in the past, an animal was the only possible substitute for a child. Buy a cat – that’s what I had to do.

* * *

“Clean language” and dirty technology in Egan’s novel essay example

iMac is an element of modern childhood, completely alien to the parents raising these children. In the “Clean Language” chapter from “A Visit to the Goon Squad”, Jennifer Egan’s character Alex, the new father, believes that he is responsible for protecting his child from digital devices, implying that children are at risk when they are exposed to the Internet and social media. However, Alex’s career choices and interactions with others show that adults are equally at risk when using social media and digital communications, if not more than the children they are theoretically trying to protect, leading us to wonder if they are at risk. children of danger. on these forms of technology in the first place.

Egan uses the nature of fictional stories to create a kindred character who connects with parents responsible for and empathetic to modernized, tech-savvy children to support his argument that digital communication and social media are not just a danger to children, but to all generations . Egan uses Alex’s internal monologue to show that parents have their children’s fear of the Internet and modern digital devices, but also argues that these technologies are inevitable in childhood today. In the depiction of Egan in a slightly futuristic New York City, it is customary for children to have “baby tubes” (Egan, 313), a form of smartphone designed specifically for children; however, Alex agrees with his wife that their own daughter “will not [have a baby pipe] until she is five” (Egan, 313). Alex and his wife are clearly supportive of the “childhood in danger” discussion. According to Craft, the “childhood in danger” argument “emphasizes its inherent vulnerability in childhood” as well as adults’ responsibility for children by “exploiting parental fears… [and] postponing the traditional stages of adulthood” (Craft, 176). Alex actively restricts his child’s access to digital gadgets, proving that he believes he is protecting his child by restricting her use of these “baby tubes”. Obviously, Alex believes that both of his children are vulnerable and that technology is threatening. Feeling the need to protect his child from phones, Alex demonstrates his belief that he – and, in turn, parents in general – are responsible for maintaining the notion of childhood that his generation has experienced – one without digital entertainment and communication.

Egan’s choice of age “five” as the end of Alex and his wife’s technology ban also demonstrates the temporality of this ban and parental control in the face of digitization in general. After the age of five, limiting the use of digital devices is no longer plausible, indicating that childhood is already too digital, despite the desire of parents to prevent these personal devices from taking over their children’s lives. At the age of five, children usually move into the traditional school system, starting in kindergarten. At this age, parental control is significantly minimized due to the child’s constant contact with other children, other adults and the use of computers at school. Through the choice of age five, Egan argues that in our digital age, there is little that an adult can do to keep children away from the digital world, which in this day may be considered “the milestone of adulthood” (Craft, 176), or in our time, childhood. Although Alex tries to delay his child’s transition into both a new era of childhood and a new stage of life, similar to what is suggested to adults in terms of a “childhood in danger” (Craft, 176), there is so much he can do to keep his child away from electronics and the internet, proving that Egan believes these technologies are central to today’s concept of childhood. When Alex’s pipe vibrates, his daughter points to his pocket and exclaims, “Das mine!” causing Alex to ask if it was “perhaps his daughter could feel vibrations through his body” (Egan, 321). Alex’s panicky reaction, while slightly absurd, demonstrates the fear he and other parents have of smartphones towards children. His concern that his child is able to feel another person’s handset is never rebutted, citing parental concern that children are already too much connected to digital devices. The italics on “mine” also show that his daughter is taking responsibility for the device, implying that these phones are an integral part of the child’s identity, possessions, and childhood itself.

Through Alex’s interactions with his daughter, Egan creates a moment that parents can sympathize with, while at the same time asserting that the transition to digital communication devices has already occurred in childhood. Through the structure of society in Egan’s “pure language”, such as the role of children in the marketplace, Egan exposes the generation gap between youth and adults and affirms the power that children receive from digital devices. In Egan’s world, children are known as “pointers” because “any child who [can] point [is] able to download music” makes them “arbiters of musical success” (Egan, 313). Without mobile phones, a child’s ability to point to anything will not be affected; however, when combined with Internet-enabled devices, the child gains enormous purchasing power. So, from a simple point of view, children can have a strong impact not only on the music industry, but on any market that uses online sales. This state of Egan’s society supports the “childhood empowerment” debate, which emphasizes the “market orientation of childhood” and the “broader sense of personal engagement” that children feel as a result of the application of technology (Craft, 177). Egan chooses the music industry as an example of his children’s increased consumerism due to his emotional associations, as it is an industry that people are often strongly attached to due to its nostalgia and artistic value. Thus, if children are the “arbiters of musical success” or the new authorities in the arts, readers may feel a new level of disgust at the “market development of childhood” not because of the damage it can do to children themselves, but because of society as a whole.

Although Alex expresses his fear that his daughter will lose both the good values and childhood innocence due to the Internet and mobile phones, he dismisses the influence of online networks on his character, supporting Egan’s argument that adults have an even more negative impact on online world than their supposedly vulnerable children. Upon entering the music industry, Alex gets a job recruiting “parrots”, people with online personas who are tasked with creating buzz on their social media around various topics or events. (Egan, 315). To select the ideal parrots, Alex must rate each candidate using three measures on a scale of 1 to 10: “how much they need [] money (“need”), how connected and respected they are [“reach””), and how much they can be willing to sell this influence (“Corruption”)” (Egan, 315). Egan uses Alex’s career as a prime example of how adults and their morals are also under threat from the internet and social media, not just kids. Alex’s career requires him to dehumanize his online friends by comparing them to animals—parrots in particular, often considered a nuisance—and quantifying them in this simplified way, discounting them to three single digits to assess their worth. to him. Thus, through his digital career, he becomes corrupt. Thanks to Alex’s work, Egan argues that social media and smartphones also pose a danger to adults.

While some may argue that Jennifer Egan’s literature does not authorize her to participate in academic debates about the impact of technology on children, it is mainly Egan’s use of the story that allows her to make such a unique contribution to the discussion. digital childhood. In most academic writing, it is frowned upon to use emotional appeals as an argument, but in prose, emotion is an essential asset, especially for Egan. Through prose, Egan creates Alex, the perfect character who speaks to adults (especially parents) and convinces them with his argument that online communication is not only damaging to children, but also to adults like Alex and readers. Alex himself dismisses technology, saying that “every byte of information he posted on the Internet (favorite color, vegetable, sexual position) was kept… that it belonged… selling himself unthinkable” (Egan, 316). While any academic newspaper could say that the Internet is taking advantage of people’s willingness to give up information without knowing the consequences, only Egan’s prose can do it in such an engaging way that creates an emotional connection with readers who have also comically commented on the silliness of the information. as their favorite vegetable online. The self-deprecation in the line where Alex regrets his “belonging” also helps to make Alex more attractive and reinforces Egan’s point that everyone is at risk online, even adults especially. Without prose, Egan would have made the same argument as everyone else in the academic debates surrounding childhood instead of offering an unprecedented perspective that included humor and sentiment.

In Clean Language, Egan creates a world in which the Internet and electronic devices are threatening forces, arguing that these technologies are also destructive in our own society. However, not only children are at risk from these devices. In fact, as children grow and learn along with these forms of technology, rather than being forced into their lives as alien forces do, as adults did, children are instead liberated through the internet and smartphones, fully knowing their abilities as good. as well as bad ones. Children have grown up using the Internet and its methods of communication and know better than to share their personal information online, unlike adults like Alex. However, because they grew up in a digital world and don’t know anything else, protecting children from the Internet is incredibly difficult, especially since they don’t see it as a threatening entity. In fact, adults are the ones who are more vulnerable to devices with Internet access because they are afraid of them and do not fully understand the enormous possibilities of the Internet. Egan argues that Internet electronics are a force to be reckoned with by adults; after all, they are the ones who offer their favorite poses on the internet.

Richard and Leisha did everything according to the instructions in the basement of their house. Nothing happened. The letter was opened:

“Dear Miss Camden!

I am very sorry that I have to quit, but the union is forcing me. If I were you, I would try to find another bodyguard on the side. Be careful. Sorry again, but I also have to live.

Bruce.”

“Laughter through tears,” Leisha said. – You and I got all this equipment, fiddled for several hours so that the explosive device did not work …

“You must admit that I didn’t sacrifice anything significant,” Richard remarked sadly.

Since the Sleepless fell out of favor, all but two of his consulting firm’s clients have closed their accounts. No wonder – they depended on the market, and therefore, on public opinion.

Leisha’s computer, set to the special network, howled an emergency signal. It was Tony Indivino.

– Leisha, I need your help as a lawyer. They’re trying to get me into a fight over the Vault. Please take off.

The shelter was surrounded by a series of freshly dug trenches. It was located in southern New York State, in the Alleghans, in the old, time-smoothed mountains, overgrown with pines and shrubs. An excellent road led from the nearest town, Conevango. The low buildings, designed with graceful simplicity, were in various stages of completion. Jennifer Sharafi met Leisha with Richard without a smile. She hadn’t changed much in six years, except that her long black hair was uncombed and her tar eyes looked huge with effort.

– Tony asked me to show you the place first.

– What happened? Leisha asked quietly.

– Later. Let’s look at the Vault first. Tony values your opinion very much, Leisha.

Each building was designed for fifty people. These communes had huge communal kitchens, dining rooms, bathrooms, and lounges, with a labyrinth of offices, studios, and laboratories.

“We still call them ‘bedrooms’ despite the ambiguity of the word,” Jennifer said. Even in that remark, which would have sounded playful on the lips of anyone else, Leisha caught a strange combination of Jennifer’s usual deliberate calmness and today’s tension.

Leisha was amazed at how detailed Tony thought out this life, collective and purely individual at the same time. The Vault had a gymnasium and a small hospital. By the end of next year, qualified personnel were planned, as well as a kindergarten, a school and a farm with intensive agriculture.

– Most of the products will come from outside, of course. Jobs will also be outside the Vault. We are only creating a safe place from which to do business with the community.

Leisha was silent.

In addition to the power supply – a self-sustaining source of I-energy – she was struck by the attitude towards human resources. Tony managed to interest the Sleepless representatives of almost all professions in the project.

“Lawyers and accountants first and foremost,” Jennifer said. “This is our front line of defense. Tony believes that power battles these days are taking place in the courts and at meetings of various councils.

Finally, Jennifer showed them the plans for the fortifications. She seemed to have just relaxed a little.

The defense system was focused on stopping attackers without harming them. Electronic surveillance covered 150 square miles of territory purchased by Jennifer. More of another county, Leisha thought. At a distance of half a mile from the gate, a force field was activated, delivering electric shocks. Penetration into the territory of remotely controlled machines or robots was tracked by a system programmed for any moving metal object of a certain mass. A device not equipped with a special signal designed by Donald Pospula, Sleepless, was taken under suspicion.

“Of course we’re not ready to fight off an air attack or an army attack,” Jennifer said. But we don’t expect it. We are threatened only by madmen blind with hatred.

Leisha was worried about the defense plan.

– If we can’t integrate into this world… Free trade means freedom of movement.

“That suggests a free mind,” Jennifer said quickly, and something in her voice made Leisha look at the girl. “I need to tell you something, Leisha. Tony isn’t here.

– Where is he?

– In Conevango, in the county jail. We are fighting a real battle for the land – it’s in such a wilderness! But it’s different. Tony was accused of kidnapping Timmy Demarzo this morning.

The walls of the room shook.

– FBI?

– Yes.

– How… how did they know?

– Some agent finally unraveled this case. Tony needs a lawyer, Leisha. Bill Thein has already agreed, but Tony wants you to handle the case.

– Jennifer, I only take my exams at the end of July!

– He will wait. While Bill will act as his lawyer. Will you pass the exam?

– Of course. But I had already agreed to work at Morehouse, Kennedy and Anderson in New York…” She trailed off. Richard stared at her, Jennifer’s face unreadable. Leisha said softly:

– What kind of protection is he going to keep?

“Guilty,” answered Jennifer, “when… what do lawyers call it?” extenuating circumstances.

Leisha was afraid that Tony would decide to fight back; lies, evasions – a dangerous line of behavior. She mentally ran through different types of extenuating circumstances, recalling precedents… Clements v. Voy could be used…

“Bill is on his way to jail now,” Jennifer said. – Will you go there with me? There was a challenge in her voice.

“Yes,” Leisha replied.

They were not allowed to see Tony. The man from the DA’s office explained that only his lawyer could visit Tony. During the conversation, the clerk’s face remained motionless, but when the girls went to the doors, he, not sparing the floor of his office, spat relish at their feet.

Richard and Leisha were returning to the airport in a rented car. Richard decided to move immediately to help with the construction.
