Duluth is a city in the state of Minnesota and the capital of Saint Louis County.
Duluth is a port at an altitude of 185 m above sea level on the shores of Lake Superior, the largest and coldest of the Great Lakes. This determined the basis of its economy – the processing of goods. Tourism is also developed in the city. nine0016 The lake also significantly affects the climate of the city. One of the unofficial names for Duluth is Air Conditioning City. The climate is damp, windy, one of the coldest in the US (excluding Alaska). The average daily temperature from mid-November to early April does not exceed 0 °C. Precipitation is 727 mm per year, falling mainly in the form of light rain or drizzle in summer, and in the form of snow in winter. The average annual temperature is +3.8 °C.
The population of Duluth in 2000 was 86.9 thousand people, of which 92.65% belong to the white race. About a third of the inhabitants are descendants or immigrants from Scandinavia. 18.5% of the inhabitants are of German origin. Among the natives of Duluth is Bob Dylan. nine0016 Duluth in 1905

The 7th Avenue Railroad was built in 1891 to take passengers to the top of Beacon Hill on Duluth Lake, 50 feet above the harbor Upper. By 1893, a pavilion was built near the upper station. It hosted concerts and special events.
1900. People gathered to watch the balloon flight. The photograph shows the upper station and the hangar of the funicular. The machine is visible in the final position. She did not fit entirely in the hangar. nine0021

It was a funicular with two cars large enough to transport passengers and horses on two tracks at once.
1900. Photo of Upper Station

The upper station of the funicular was equipped with a steam engine and served as a transfer point to the Highland Park tram line, which started on the other side of the funicular station.

caught fire with a steam locomotive at the upper station on May 28, 1901 The fire destroyed the upper station and spread to the pavilion, which was also burned to the ground.
The photograph below is extremely valuable in that it still shows the funicular machine itself among the ruins. In a few minutes, the cable that still supports the car will melt from the heat and the car will rush down. nine0016 May 28, 1901 – Smoking ruins of the pavilion and upper station

In the photo we see the lower station and the wrecked car. No one was hurt, because the cable rupture as a consequence of the fire was predicted by the rescuers and people from the lower station were evacuated in time.
May 28, 1901 – Lower station after the fire

Details of the funicular machine can be seen in this photo. Basically, these were platforms for carts and horses. There was a small compartment for passengers on the outside of the car. nine0016

Six months after the fire and car crash, the funicular was restored, but only from one car moving along the left (western) track. The steam engine was replaced by a power plant. On the second track, the machine was replaced by a counterweight.
1905 – New view of funicular

At the top of the right track you can see a flat counterweight. There is no longer an upper station hangar.

Please note that the new lower station was built on the site of the right track. Passengers had to pass through a narrow door to get on the car. No more wooden gates

When transferred to a computer size 3200 by 2518

This continued until 1911, when two new machines designed specifically for this funicular were put into operation in 1912
1912 – New funicular

You can see two new cars: one at the top on the left track, the second at the lower station on the right. Note also that four bridges have been removed and replaced with four small intermediate stations located between the two tracks. To access these stations, passengers used the passages located below the tracks
1914 – New lower station

As you can see, the place of passage to the station has again undergone changes. nine0016 1926 – Upper station

In this photo you can see how small the new upper station is.
