Our family has been so very lucky to have our toddler at Bright Horizons Duke Campus. With all of the important decisions that come with being a new family in a new city, our very best decision was joining the family at Bright Horizons. Miss Jenny and team navigated these wild COVID times with grace and precision. Our son runs into his classroom with a smile, the menu has expanded his palate where he is not picky, and he weekly displays a new skill from daycare that we did not know he had. Our friends and family are consistently impressed by our kiddo’s skills and we lovingly get to say “We didn’t teach him that, Bright Horizon’s did”. Thank you Miss Mary and Miss Sarah and team!

Chapter 57

There was a banquet at the beach in the middle of the day.

Under the guidance of the maid-cook, the maids from the villa rushed to the banquet with various ingredients and began to cook.

Tables were set up everywhere, and freshly baked and steamed seafood dishes were served with fine white wine.

By Raven’s order, everyone ate and enjoyed food, regardless of their status or race. Unfortunately, the whale brought by Soldrake was not immediately eaten.

Whale meat was considered one of the most difficult to cook, because it took several days to drain the blood and get rid of the unwanted smell.

Therefore, whale meat was passed on to orc warriors and gryphons, who eat all kinds of meat, regardless of its origin. Within hours, half of the whale had disappeared into their stomachs. All the remaining meat was handed over to the soldiers by Raeven, with the exception of a few selected parts that the chef pointed out. The soldiers were delighted with the generosity of their master.

Whale meat was a precious commodity, sold at a very high price, so it was worth a fortune even if it was not eaten or sold.

Alcohol, delicious food, and the joy of making a fortune fueled the beach atmosphere even more. Everyone was in good spirits by sundown, and the first day of vacation ended too soon.

Everyone went to the villa, taking shortcuts to speed up their journey.

But when the sun began to sink below the horizon, several people rushed to the beach.

– What!? Where is everyone?

The person who said this and wiped the sweat was Jan.

– Um, I think they’ve already returned to the villa, Your Highness.

The servant who accompanied him bowed his head.

– Shit! These bastards left me alone!

He intended to take a short nap, but instead he dozed off for several hours. But no one followed him or called him, and instead they left him on the beach.

– You guys…. Well, just look!

The cry of the abandoned man echoed along the beach when all the people who had forgotten him returned to the villa.

* * *

– Phew…

With a long sigh, Raeven slumped into the chair by the window. In the distance, the sound of sea waves was barely heard in the night, and the cold moonlight dimly illuminated nature.

The mood created by the soundscape and stage was truly overwhelming.

But Raeven’s eyes were fixed on the distance. A bright light radiated from the edge of the coastline.

City of Leus.

The port city, considered one of the largest cities in the central empire, was lit so well that it resembled bright daylight.

The city had 40,000 inhabitants, and the port was full of sailors and merchants scurrying back and forth, which explained why day and night were basically the same.

As a child, Raeven visited the port for the first time with her brother and father. At that time, he could hardly come to his senses. There were so many people in the city that it seemed to him that he did not know the true meaning of the word “crowded” before. Moreover, people in the port dressed differently and spoke differently.

Raeven felt the gazes of the villagers directed at his family, as they were still considered nobles, although not of high rank.

Members of the imperial army and noble families were usually always arrogant.

The Annaba warriors were always dressed in wide skirts and showed off their black, bare upper body, full of tattoos. They were so ferocious that it was hard to look them in the eye.

Paladins of Naja wore turbans, grew long mustaches, and carried crescent-shaped sabers. They were soft, but without warning they cut off the neck of their opponents if a fight broke out.

In addition, Raven saw many warriors from various areas, but the most brutal of them were the orcs from the islands of Morte. Orcs from the archipelago bound the harpies and sea gryphons with chains, and no one dared to provoke them, not even the Warriors of Annaba and the Paladins of Naji.

Even the Leus imperial army tried its best not to cause trouble. There were pirates among the orcs, but it was impossible to put them under sanctions. Parts of the port at Leus were excluded by imperial law to revive trade, and under these circumstances skirmishes never stopped.

Thus, in the port of Leus, one of the three most famous ports of the empire, where various transactions took place related to gold, salt, spices, weapons and even slaves, a figure appeared. This figure controlled the black market and paid no attention to the city itself.

The so-called lord of the night at Port Leus has been referred to as the “Dark King”.

But the identity of the Dark King was known only to a select few.

And the current Dark King of Leus was…

“Toleo Arangis…” Raeven muttered softly, looking where the sun had set.

Toleo Aranguis was the second son of the Duchy of Aranguis and the current Dark King of Leus. Raven accidentally learned that Toleo Arangis was the Dark King of Leus in the past.

Toleo Aranguis was the only reason the Duchy of Aranguis could covertly conquer the islands with the help of the Latuan orcs.

– But even if you are the Dark King of Leus, your powers are weak at the moment. Obviously, this is good news for me,” Raeven muttered coldly, raising a glass of white wine to his lips.

There were still a few years left before the Duchy of Aranguis would have united the Morte Isles if things had gone the same way as in his past life. This meant that right now, Toleo Arangis was not yet active as the king of the underworld.

– There should be a chance. ..

Raeven raised his glass to the distant light of Leus as if about to offer a toast.

– While you’re here, can I join you for a toast?

Raeven turned his head towards someone’s voice. As expected, it was Yang.

Yang walked across the room and spoke in a clear, grumpy voice as he sat down on the chair across from Raeven.

– Are you happy that you had a good time alone with the ladies, Your Grace Pendragon?

Raeven laughed wearily and replied.

– Are you saying that you want to go through the same hardships, Your Highness? You should be grateful that I didn’t drag you into this.

– Difficulties? You’re weird if you say you’re tired of playing with beauties.

Jan poured himself a glass of wine and handed it to Raeven. Raeven repeated the action after him, and the clink of glasses was heard. Yang leaned back in his chair and spoke again.

– Anyway, when are you going to make your move?

– It’s better to do nothing for the first few days. I will do as you say and wait for the governor general to take the first step and then give my answer.

The most powerful candidate for crown prince and heir to the Dukedom of Pendragon has arrived here. The nobles of the Merleid and Leus region will certainly send them invitations, perhaps even the Governor-General Count Sagunda himself.

– Hmm…

With a languid expression, Yang raised a glass of wine to his lips and continued to speak.

– Are you sure that’s all you need from me?

– That’s all there is to it. All you have to do is create moderate tension. If you don’t do anything, you will arouse suspicion, and if you poke around like some kind of dog, the opponents will hide and run away.

One of the hidden purposes of the leave was to re-investigate the treason associated with the poisoning of Prince Shio.

Although the likelihood of finding new important information was very low, since a serious investigation had been carried out several years ago, Raeven had some suspicions. The relationship between Geoffrey of Aragon’s mother, Baroness Erlynne, and the Earl of Sagunda was unusual.

Moreover, the Emperor in the future of Raeven was Geoffrey Aragon.

As soon as he ascended the throne, the Duchy of Aranguis united the Morte Isles as if they were just waiting for the coronation of a new Emperor. They rushed to claim the position of the ruler of the South.

And the second son of the Duchy of Arangis was the Dark King of Leus.

In other words, a hidden colossal axis of force was present or was forming. A huge web connected all the different points. But at the moment, no one knew this truth.

Only one person who lived another life as Raven Valt could conclude this truth.

– The organizers of the three-year-old incident are probably now closely monitoring your movements. It will be better to move moderately.

– You want them to focus all their attention on me, right? Okay, this is my speciality. I’ll just do some digging and then go back to the Royal Battle. And after that…

“I’ll finish the job,” Raeven replied confidently.

Yang grinned.

– Okay, then I’ll do as you say. I agree? It may be difficult for three people to move around while hiding their identity…

– One of these three is a dragon. And… I’m stronger than you think.

Raeven spoke casually. Yang looked at him in surprise. But soon his face broke into a smile, and he nodded.

– Well, there aren’t many people in the Empire who can directly confront my spirit. Okay, I trust you, Pendragon.

Jan held out the glass again.

Again, the two men silently made a toast and then immediately drained their glasses. Feeling the cold white wine wash down their throats, Raeven and Yang turned their cold gazes to the night sea.

In a few days, Toleo Arangis will no longer be king of the underworld.

* * *

Despite the fact that it was almost midnight, the extraterritorial part of the port of Leus was brightly lit.

At first glance, it was a bustling night market with an exotic atmosphere, but as you delve into the narrow, intricate alleys, you might come across a black market that few people knew about.

The pub was at the end of a shady black market alley. It had a small sign in the shape of an archipelago killer whale. All sorts of people gathered in the pub.

Most of the men in the pub looked like they didn’t hesitate to do all sorts of nasty things. And they often drank with others. They were sailors, mercenaries and warriors from all over the country.

All men were considered the most savage and cruel of all, but even they did not dare to climb the stairs to the second floor of the pub.

An orc that was twice their size stood in the middle of the stairs with his arms folded.

The second floor of the pub was rather deserted, in contrast to the noisy first floor.

There were three people on the second floor. One of them was leaning on the railing, and the other two were sitting around an old round wooden table.

Two of them were human, the other was an orc.

Burrrp!!

Leaning against the railing, the orc warrior with the eyepatch let out a long burp. Oddly enough, a cute seal adorned his eyepatch.

– Oh, damn…

The owner of the voice was a human. He played with his dagger, twisted it in his hands, resting his feet on the table.

And he was big.

Even though he was sitting on a chair, it was easy to see that he was as big as an orc warrior leaning against the railing. The giant man glanced at the orc as he twirled his dagger.

– Dirty orc bastard, spare us your dirty burp. Or do you want me to gouge out your other eye and feed it to the sharks?

– Paku loves sharks. They eat everything, even bones.

The orc warrior responded with a wide smile on his face. It was not clear whether he did not understand the insult or whether he was deliberately mocking this person.

– I don’t know why I bothered to say something. Stupid bastard who only knows how to shove food down his throat.

The man shook his head and looked at the man sitting opposite.

– I’m sorry about that. He probably drank too much salt water, which caused his brain to turn into mush.

– ……

A slender young man dressed as an ordinary mercenary silently shook his head.

The large man spoke with a wry smile.

– Well, I’ll get straight to the point. So what does the Governor General think?

– Take care of the cat and the young snake. Of course, a cat cannot be moderately killed and humiliated. As for the snake… you can do whatever you want with it.

The young man’s voice and eyes were devoid of emotion when he called Jan Aragon and Alan Pendragon a cat and a snake.

The Duchess

Chapter 1

The magnificent castle of Belgrave in the heart of Harford stood unshakably in the sixteenth century. For almost three hundred years, eleven generations of the Latham family carefully passed it on from father to son. The current owner of the castle – Philip Latham, Duke of Westerfield – honored the traditions of his ancestors and kept the family property in exemplary order.

The lands of the estate stretched far beyond the horizon – extensive forests, fields of tenant farmers, a large lake teeming with fish. Philip managed the estate from a young age, after his father died while hunting. Under the watchful eye of the owner, the castle and the surrounding area prospered.

Now, at seventy-four, the duke gradually passed on his knowledge of sustainable housekeeping to his eldest son, Tristan. He was clearly ready to take the title of duke and take care of the management of the estate. He was forty-five years old, married and had two daughters. The second son, Edward, at the age of forty-two did not acquire a wife or legitimate children, although he had a lot of illegitimate children. Even the libertine himself could not name the exact number. Gambling and wine interested him more than the consequences of love affairs. Thus, on Tristan and Edward, the male line of Latham was cut short. And Philip had enough reasons for reflection and excitement.

Both gentlemen were the children of Philip and his first wife, Arabella, who was her husband’s second cousin and came from an earl’s family. She possessed very considerable advantages – a rich dowry, impeccable upbringing and beauty. When they married, Westerfield was twenty-eight, and the bride had just turned seventeen. Arabella and the young duke made an excellent couple.

However, Philip soon discovered that behind the beautiful appearance of his wife, there was a rather cold and not very pleasant personality, which more and more showed up with age. She was much more interested in secular fuss than in the life of her own family. When Tristan was seven years old, Arabella died of acute influenza. The Duke had to raise his sons alone. Of course, not without the help of tutors, the Dowager Duchess – Philip’s mother – and an extensive staff of servants.

Many have tried to pass off their daughters as a widower, but without success. And only twenty years after the death of his wife, the duke fell in love again.

Marie-Isabelle was a cousin of the French King Louis XVI, who was executed during the French Revolution. The daughter of a marquis, a representative of the House of Orleans on the one hand and the Bourbon dynasty on the other, she was born in the first year of the revolution. Her parents soon followed the king into the grave. Their castle was burned to the ground, all property was plundered. The marquis, anticipating the tragic development of events, managed to send Marie-Isabelle to England to friends, leaving orders in case of his death.

She was extraordinarily beautiful – blond hair, huge blue eyes, porcelain complexion and a delightful figure.

Westerfield also made a big impression on the young Frenchwoman. Four months after they met, the lovers got married.

Marie-Isabelle fell in love with Belgrave as much as her husband. She participated in the management of the house and helped to change the situation in it to a more modern one. Everyone in her soul doted. At fifty-five, Philippe felt like a boy next to Marie-Isabelle.

Their life flowed like a fairy tale, albeit a short one. In the first year of their marriage, Marie-Isabelle gave birth to her husband’s daughter and died two days after giving birth. Angelica turned out to be very similar to her mother, she had the same blond hair and large sky-blue eyes. Having lost his wife, Philip turned all his love to his daughter. He took Angelica with him everywhere and taught everything that he taught her brothers, and perhaps much more. Angelica inherited from her father a passion for Belgrave, as well as his managerial talents. They often consulted how they should act in the affairs of the estate, more than once Westerfield obeyed the advice of his daughter and never regretted it.

Angelica was educated at home, and thanks to a French governess she spoke her mother’s native language perfectly. This is what Philip wanted.

Years passed. The Duke was getting old, and Angelica took excellent care of him. In short, she was the perfect daughter.

Philip felt remorse that he rarely takes her to London. Trips to the capital took a lot of energy from him, and he lost interest in social life a long time ago. In 1821, the coronation of George IV took place. Philip, who is the king’s cousin, was invited to the ceremony and took Angelique with him. She was then twelve years old. The young lady was struck by the scope of the celebration and the festivities that followed. Philip returned to Hertfordshire exhausted, but seeing the happiness in Angelica’s eyes, he did not regret the trip.

Since then, Westerfield has often thought about his daughter’s first season, about the ball he was to organize at the mansion in Grosvenor Square. How he didn’t want to do that! Surely Angelica will immediately find a groom – it simply could not be otherwise. And Philip was not yet ready to part with her.

A few years earlier, he allowed Tristan and his wife and daughters to settle in a London mansion. Elizabeth, the wife of Belgrave’s heir, might well have introduced Angelique to high society. All the Duke wanted was money. However, Tristan and Edward experienced an unhealthy envy of Angelica, and they could not stand her mother and, perhaps, even hated her. The duke grieved over this, and every year his concern for his daughter grew.

According to the law, the title, property and land passed to Tristan – except for a small share of the money and the estate near Belgrave, in which the Dowager Duchess lived. It was due to Edward. Philippe could not convey anything to Angelica. In addition, according to the inheritance clause, Tristan had no obligations to his sister. The duke several times expressed to his eldest son his desire that he take care of his half-sister, for example, allowing her to live in a large house in the Westerfield estates, simply called the Cottage. However, the duke could not influence Tristan in any way.

Westerfield spent many sleepless nights trying to think of a way out of his daughter’s predicament. His health did not improve over time.

Philippe had been suffering from a lung infection for a month now and Angelica was extremely worried. It was an unusually cold November, and the faithful daughter ordered to constantly keep the fire in the fireplace in the duke’s bedroom. Winters in Belgrave were often frosty, and this year it snowed as early as October. Angelica distinctly heard the howling of the mighty wind outside as she read to her father at his bedside.

At noon, Mrs. White, the housekeeper, came into the bedroom and inquired about the duke’s well-being. After consulting, he and Angelica decided that it was time to send for a doctor. So did Philip’s valet, John Markham, who served his master faithfully long before the duke had a daughter. Everyone was worried about Westerfield’s deteriorating condition.

The house was run by the butler Hobson, who competed with Markham for the duke’s attention. But now, at such a turbulent time for everyone, he reconciled with the valet. Angelica felt great gratitude to the servants for their loyalty to her father, beloved by all, kind and very benevolent master. Philip instilled the same qualities in his daughters.

Angelica knew every footman, every maid by name, she knew how the grooms and caretakers of the castle lived, she was familiar with the tenants of her father’s lands and their families. When she met, she always took an interest in their life, for example, when she checked the linen with Mrs. White or listened to a report on the state of affairs in the kitchen.

The cook, Mrs. Williams, was a kind woman, but she ruled her patrimony with an iron fist, gave instructions to her subordinates like a seasoned sergeant, and did not let anyone down. However, its severity fully justified the excellent taste and sophistication of the menu.
