HOW TO PAINT A WALL: PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

07/06/2018

The other day I finally did what I had been planning for a long time: I drew a picture with lettering and doodles on the wall of my Moscow apartment, which we were preparing for rent. This was my second experience of painting on the wall – for the first time I tried to do it in Thailand, and although I was not very pleased with the results, I realized that I like to draw on the walls 🙂 I decided to summarize the information in the post – suddenly you are also going to draw on the walls and Do you have the same questions and concerns as me? nine0003

HOW TO PREPARE A WALL

Before painting something on the wall, you need to make sure that the wall:

a) is even

b) is painted

primed and painted. If already painted – you can immediately draw, if point “a” is observed. And yes, speaking of evenness, I mean not so much horizontal and vertical deviations (this is just a drawing that will help to hide it and it is not so critical), but smoothness. If fingers and pantyhose don’t cling to the wall – it’s already ok 🙂 If the wall is bumpy, then in theory you can still draw, but get ready that it will be difficult, you will spend more ink, and the result will not be as wow as you would like. Well, yes – most likely, you will spend more time on the drawing than if you still did the alignment. nine0003

I’m speaking from my own experience: the wall I painted on in Thailand had a texture of “crap with pebbles and sand”. This, you know, can be found in Russian porches, often painted with green paint. I didn’t fix it, because the alteration at that moment scared me more, and I thought that it would do, but then I regretted it very much and for a long time: it was unrealistic to draw a straight line.

The wall in Moscow was handed over by the developer painted white, you could take a black marker and start painting. But I wanted a black background (because simple paths are not for me), so I painted the wall black before painting. I chose Siberia’s slate-effect paint, because at that time I had not yet decided what I would paint on the wall with and was considering ordinary chalk. I applied the paint myself with a roller and a brush at the joints with the walls and ceiling (covering them with masking tape), nothing complicated. nine0003

On the advice of representatives of Siberia, the wall was not covered with anything else before application. After the first layer, the wall did not look very good – there were a lot of bald spots, after the second one everything evened out, the wall became pleasantly black, and, which I liked, slightly rough and completely matte. I tried to draw on the wall with chalk – the sensations are a little strange, it seems that the chalk is not perfectly washed off the paint, but, alas, I have nothing to compare with yet, so I can’t formulate a review on how this paint works exactly under the chalk board. For my purposes, the paint suited me 100%. nine0003

WHAT TO DRAW: MY CHOICE OF MATERIALS

If nothing comes into contact with the wall, you can paint it with anything: even with a pen, even with CD markers – the main thing is that you feel comfortable working with the tool and the thickness of the line / color suits you. But if someone or something touches the wall, everything is more difficult, especially if the goal is for the drawing not to be erased (if it was erased, a combination of chalk and slate paint will save you :)).

In my case, the matter was complicated by the fact that I planned to draw a picture on a kitchen apron, which is supposed to be washed at least sometimes. I can already see how you grabbed your head and shout: “But how to wipe off the fat ?!” But first things first.

I considered the following options:

  1. Draw with chalk, cover with glass
  2. Draw a picture with a brush and some indestructible paint and do not cover it with anything
  3. Paint with indestructible paint + cover with glass

The option with glass didn’t really appeal to me, because it’s an extra expense, and not a small one, and I don’t really like how glass looks on part of the wall, but doing it on the entire wall is a bit crazy. Therefore, the idea with chalk was quickly crossed out and I went to look for indestructible paint.

Here I was going to do a big review of a wide variety of markers and materials, but the truth is that when I went looking for something that is easy to draw on and hard to erase, I came across only one brand everywhere: Molotow. They make markers with very powerful inks that you can’t wash off easily. And, alas, no one paid me for this publication (comrades from Molotov, I will not refuse free markers, if anything ;)). nine0003

Molotov has several types of markers, I was interested in acrylic markers – they are erased only until they dry, then they can’t be washed off with ordinary water, only with a solvent (at least I couldn’t wash it off, but I rubbed notably). Acrylic markers come in different sizes and have different tips, I will write a detailed review somehow on Instagram . I liked the 4mm round tip the most, I would have preferred a larger size, but I didn’t find larger round ones, and I don’t like beveled ones. The markers are refillable, which means that when the ink runs out, you can add more. The tips can also be changed (they are erased), but you need to know which tips are suitable for which marker. nine0003

As a slightly cheaper alternative, I considered buying regular white acrylic paint and painting with a brush – the effect is almost the same, but it loses a lot in terms of convenience, plus I wanted to get a line of equal thickness. nine0003

The result is this: I am very pleased with the chosen tool – easy to use, economical consumption, the line is dense and bright, and yes, the drawing is not washed off! I furiously rubbed one area for several minutes, the line did not go anywhere. And for those who are worried that there will be greasy drops, I will inform you that there are very cool and penny grates on pans that save you from splashing, plus our working surface turned out to be 10 cm deeper than the standard and, accordingly, the stove does not stand close. Well, if the tenants stain the wall so that it won’t be washed off, I won’t be very upset – I’ll paint over it and apply a new drawing;)

WHAT TO DRAW

For a long time I was tormented by the question of what to draw. On the one hand, I wanted to make a lot of lettering, on the other hand, I wanted to make a lot of different lettering, on the third hand, doodles have firmly entered my life and it’s a pity to leave them overboard. And also the apartment was made for rent, and the drawing was in the kitchen, I wanted the final picture to be quite neutral, but at the same time appropriate.

At some point, I decided that I should put my self-expression at the forefront, that is, draw in the style in which I would like to draw to order. So, these are dudliks + lettering. But I added a small challenge to myself: I decided that my objects would not be separate and on their own, as happens almost always in my drawings, but would stick out a little from each other, overlap and flow. nine0003

I decided that lettering and doodles will be on an equal footing, that is, I will not highlight lettering with complex decor and fill it with color, I will draw everything in the same thickness, not giving anyone the main role.

And then I thought about the sketch for a couple of weeks and even drew some rough options.

Follow the evolution 😉

At first I wanted to do lettering in Russian, Cyrillic to practice, but then I ran into a wall called “I can’t find funny, but short and capacious quotes that would look appropriate. ” Either I am so picky, or the Cyrillic alphabet is still too obliging and attracts attention. I changed everything to English and felt relieved – after all, it is much more familiar and easier for me to work with the Latin alphabet. nine0003

Then I tormented doodles for a long time – in the original version there were a lot of things not about food – clouds, rainbows and all that, but by the final version I decided that the kitchen is not a place for clouds, I need more sweets, vegetables, appliances and everything associated with food. Therefore, I took the last sketch as a basis, redid it on the go on the wall.

HOW TO TRANSFER A DRAWING TO THE WALL

If you have a sketch and want to transfer it from your notebook/iPad to the wall, there are three main ways to transfer it. nine0003

First method: by eye

The most banal, obvious and not requiring additional priblud. Look at the picture – try to repeat on the wall. This is exactly the method that I used, because there was no time to organize the other two. It will work if it’s not very important for you that the picture repeats exactly the same, if you know how and are ready to improvise, and if it doesn’t annoy you when the picture on the sketch and on the wall no longer converge 🙂 I decided for myself that it’s easier to draw immediately on wall without a sketch than “peek” because it’s more annoying than helpful. nine0003

Method two: squares

This method allows you to transfer the picture quite accurately, but it takes time. The bottom line is this: draw your sketch into squares, then draw the same squares on the wall and transfer the picture using this grid as a support. That is, the contents of one square were schematically transferred, then the second, the third, and so on. This still does not guarantee perfect accuracy and you will still need to adapt, but in theory it is easier than without squares. I didn’t have the patience to draw squares. nine0003

Method three: projector

The most convenient, but at the same time the most expensive method, about which, alas, I also know only in theory, because the chosen model of the projector had to wait three weeks and I have not yet bought. There are two types of projectors: directly for artists, for transferring pictures to the wall, and ordinary ones, with which you can also watch movies.

The most famous projectors for artists are produced by the American company Artograph. Most models are arranged as follows: put a sheet with a sketch, put a projector on top and it projects the picture onto the wall. In my opinion, this approach has many disadvantages: the sketch must be clear enough and of a certain size so that, on the one hand, it fits into the space under the projector, and on the other hand, it must show a sufficient amount of detail. Well, it’s not very cheap either. nine0003

A projector that can also be used as a home theater is a smarter solution in my opinion. But here you need to understand this: not every projector that can show movies will be good for projecting pictures on the wall. There are a million of all sorts of muddy parameters, which are very well described in this note , here are the main ones that you need to keep an eye on:

  • the projector must be short throw, that is, have a distance to image size ratio parameter, the smaller the better. Conventionally, 0.4:1 or 0.8:1 (means that to project a meter of the picture, you need to set the projector 40 or 80 cm from the wall, respectively). A lot of projectors fall off here, because if the ratio of 1.55: 1 is completely fine for showing a movie, then when you try to paint a 2×3 wall with this in a small apartment, there will be problems, because the room is not long enough 🙂
  • the projector should be high contrast and show well even in a bright room (because it is not always possible to curtain all the windows, and drawing at night is a dubious pleasure), so you need to monitor the parameters of the lamp power (from 200 watts), contrast (from 10,000 :1), and lumens (from 3000).
  • is convenient if you can connect a flash drive
  • and the most tricky parameter, which is not available anywhere, but is very useful: vertical and horizontal image adjustment. The projector with these two parameters can be placed not exactly opposite, but a little to the left-right-higher-lower and twisted so that the image does not mow. nine0042

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend you a specific model, because I myself got confused in the choice and have not bought anything yet. If I find time, I will figure it out, buy and test it – I will definitely write additionally. Judging by the Yandex.market of models that combine all of the above qualities, you can’t find cheaper than 50,000, but rather you should count on 80-90, so the pleasure is not cheap. For a one-time painting, I definitely would not take it.

RANDOM THOUGHTS ABOUT WALL PAINTING

  • I drew without a grid, with a visual reference to the sketch, which I held in front of my eyes on the iPad. It was difficult to draw the letters in such a way that they do not float up and fall down, that is, they go parallel to the floor. It was solved quite simply: it would be possible to draw guides, but I wanted to freestyle and, what to hide, it was lazy, so I allowed a slight curvature in both cases.
  • The first time I painted in Thailand, I didn’t think in advance that thicker/shaded areas would draw attention to themselves and added these accents in more random places than I would like. In Moscow, I took the lesson into account and decided that I would do everything in monoline – one thickness, without shading. This is not necessary, it is quite possible to paint over some of the letters and objects, but you just need to make sure that the painted becomes heavier, and think about rhythm and meaning. nine0042
  • Wall painting is a serious physical labor. The back and shoulder of the working arm are especially tired. And more ridiculous poses than when painting a wall are probably taken only by actresses of porn films )) yourself with hot water. Another time, I had to entrust the drawing to my left hand, because the right one did not fit into the space between the wall and the hood. Well, yes, I had to spend some time in the sink))
  • In “ordinary” life, I used to draw with my forearm on a sheet/table, that is, I do not keep my hand on weight. Moreover, I draw a maximum on A4, I do not make sweeping movements. Therefore, it was very difficult to control the lines at a long distance, given that there was almost always nowhere to rest the hand (because there was a risk of touching fresh paint).
  • I’m used to a comfortable perspective when drawing – leaning over the iPad / sheet – and you can see everything. When you draw on a wall, in 70-80% of cases you see the depicted object from a very strange angle – either strongly from below, then from the side, or you don’t see it at all. And changing the angle of view is not always easy (or a very large ladder/scaffolding is needed). It was very strange and unusual, but I think you adapt with time. nine0042

photos of the best design ideas for painting on the walls in an apartment

Wall painting in the interior can really replace wallpaper and at the same time the design will be brighter and more individual. It’s cheaper, easier, and often the only way out. Even without knowing how to draw, you can always get out of the situation with simple methods. Just by studying the instructions, you can create an interesting painting. nine0003

What can be beautiful to draw? Below are popular plots common in design.

Content

  1. The most popular stories in the interior
  2. Abstraction
  3. Large leaves and flowers
  4. using a stencil
  5. decorative roller
  6. decorative plastering
  7. Framics 900 fingers

Abstraction

Geometric patterns on the walls in abstraction – a way to easily decorate a room without the need for artistic talent. It is based on an arbitrary sequence of figures that create an overall picture.

The plot has no clear restrictions. It can be either 1 figure on a white background, or a full-fledged collage of different shapes. The point is in their correct combination and chosen colors.

In addition to geometry, other, real images can be used. The cosmic plot is very common, black holes, planets and stars. It is important that they are painted partly or completely distorted, so an abstract picture is created with a natural basis. nine0003

Natural images are often used as well. Leaves, tree trunks mixed into a “porridge”, nature is easily created.

The main plus is completely free ideas in the room. Since the rich abstraction consists of dozens of elements that are connected by a single leitmotif, the plot helps to hide many of the shortcomings of the apartment.

This is especially evident in Khrushchev houses, where there are many wall defects. The inability to focus on a single picture allows you to defocus your attention and see the whole picture. nine0003

Large leaves and flowers

Leaf wall decoration is a popular move because:

  1. It is beyond stylistic restrictions. Any artistic direction can be embodied in leaves. For example, standard painting is suitable, like oil on canvas. It does not pretend to be realistic, but at the same time it beautifully decorates the house. It is possible to reproduce pop art in modern flashy designs. It is easier with him, as even a person without art education can handle it. Hyperrealism can only be embodied by a real painter, but the effect will be amazing. nine0042
  2. Easily integrated into any design. Indeed, even the most ascetic styles can accept them. Even interior decorating styles like minimalism are easy to pair with grassy designs when done in monochrome.

Drawing brings peace and relaxation. Decorative patterns on the walls of this type can be done independently. The very structure of plants is simple. If you do not flirt with shadows and lighting, even a non-professional will get a pretty mural. nine0003

Using a stencil

A stencil is a powerful tool for making your own wall art. As a rule, the use of templates helps to quickly complete the design.

Required for:

  1. Multiple pattern of the same type. In some cases, many of the same parts are used at an equal distance from each other. They are distributed in rows, so you need to keep the intervals and the same shape. It is almost impossible to do this manually – there will be strong errors. But it is realistic to make a single stencil, according to which the outline is made in the future. nine0042
  2. Complex textures. Forms such as Khokhloma are practically impossible to draw, without a template and experience. It is desirable that there be insurance while drawing a large number of overflows.

Regular thick paper is also suitable as a template, but it is better to use special films for the stencil base. It is sold specifically for printing on an inkjet printer, and in centers it can be a separate copy. The pattern is printed on it and cut out.

A clerical knife will do, but it is better to take a special model scalpel from Aliexpress. It is sharper, holds sharpening longer, it is easier to manage. In addition, this stencil is reusable.

Modern wall painting in the interior often involves the same type of drawings in large quantities and with a clear sequence. There is nothing better for this than using a pre-made template.

Decorative roller patterns

If wallpaper does not suit the interior, the drawing on the wall in the apartment can be done using a special roller. Convex sections are located on the cylinder. The roller is dipped in a small amount of paint. It is important that in the tray it is located exclusively on the bottom.

There are a few rules to follow:

  1. The lines must be parallel to avoid bevels;
  2. Each turn must start from a similar near strip.

3D images

A very difficult way to decorate. On a wall or a pre-prepared substrate (it is better to take polyethylene, since it does not have adhesion at all), a drawing is applied with a marker. After that, the mixture is laid out and in the right places it is given volume. After drying, the image is tinted. It is difficult to make such creative drawings on the walls in an apartment, as it is comparable to the work of a sculptor.

It is better to take compositions with medium drying periods. Alibastre dries quickly and without a template, it will be almost impossible to mold the desired figure. Other gypsum mixtures with a long setting time may spread and lose volume. nine0003

Drawings on the wall in the apartment with your own hands can be made using real building materials. A decorative roller is a tool that has a specific texture on the surface.

After applying the plaster, while it is still wet, you need to go over it with a roller. When the composition dries, the texture remains frozen.

The most common plaster can be used for rollers. They imitate the structure well, so you can recreate the walls made under:

  1. Brick;
  2. Marble;
  3. Crocodile skin;
  4. Wood texture;
  5. Wool.

As a rule, further painting is carried out. For example, by painting the bricks, adding a crumb effect and playing with shades, you can make a natural brick wall without the cost of building materials.

Painting on decorative plaster

Decorative painting on plaster is the most common design move in modern design. nine0003

Decorative plaster is a heterogeneous mass based on materials of different densities. Due to this, it is impossible to achieve a uniform coating and it is used in interior design very often.

Drawing can be done in several ways:

  1. By applying a surface layer. This will require the same texture roller for painting on the walls.
  2. By scraping off individual areas. Also common technology. This requires a set of model knives and a preliminary sketch. It is important that under the decorative layer there is an even preliminary one. Sometimes the substrate is even painted in other colors. nine0042
  3. Drawing. The heterogeneity allows you to paint real paintings on the wall, similar to oil paintings. Decorative wall painting in the interior can be done using plaster of different colors.

Patterns on the wall can be abstract or have a real basis, like imitation brick or natural stone.

Hand-painted walls

You can also draw a picture on the wall in the standard way. You will need ordinary oil paints and a brush. An option for people who can draw and love to decorate. nine0003

The base requires plain, white plaster or additionally painted with paint in the desired tone. From above, the walls are painted with flowers in the interior. It is important to note that the wall should not be dusty, as the paint will not adhere well to it. Therefore, it is imperative to use a deep penetration primer for dusty surfaces.

On the other hand, the pattern may not be permanent. Special graphite paint turns the wall into a drawing board.
