I have a 4 year old and a 3 year old who have been going to Brainy kids since they were 8 weeks old. I cant say enough good things about this daycare. The facility has an app that allows you to know exactlywhat is going on with your child throughout the day, and the send pictures as well. Its amazing what my children have learned to this point. They started out learning sign language in the infant room to counting and writing their names in the pre school classes. This is not just a day care, they have learning activities for the kids all day, arts and crafts etc. I like the fact that everything is included like breakfast, snacks and lunch, one less thing I have to worry about. The staff is amazing. I appreciate that when I pick them up at night they give me an update of what went on in their day. They are very caring, it makes it easy for me to work all day knowing that my children are well taken care of….

“A 15-year-old had to become a hero.” And survivors help people with post-traumatic stress disorder

In Texas, at a Santa Fe school in May 2018, a student killed eight teenagers and two teachers, and injured 13 others. A year after the tragedy, the survivors of the shooting united to support the people who had experienced a strong shock. And a feature film is being made about a high school hero who saved other children at the cost of his own life.

On the morning of May 18, 2018, 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagurtzis brought his father’s weapons to school, a pump-action shotgun and a .38 pistol, and pipe bombs. He went up to the classrooms and opened fire.

During the attack, 10 people were killed – eight students and two teachers’ assistants. Another 13 people were injured. But there could have been much more victims if not for 15-year-old Christian Garcia.

The boy was in art class with other students when the shooting started. He told his classmates to hide in the closet while he held the door, protecting other children and the teacher from the shooter. Pagurtzis shot Christian through the door.

Friends later recalled that Christian Garcia dreamed of serving in the US Army after school. He wanted to protect others. At that moment of the tragedy, Christian was aware of what he was doing.

Director Brandon Smith is making a film about Christian Garcia. He was shocked by the story of the young man. The picture will be called “Love your neighbor.”

“A 15-year-old had to be a hero,” says Brandon Smith. “It inspired me.”

The film is currently in production. Director Smith is seeking funding to complete the project by the end of 2019. Christian’s mother, Clausen, is especially waiting for him.

“My son has always helped others since childhood. Sometimes, while supporting other people, he forgot about himself, ”she recalls.

“My brother escaped, hers didn’t”

Annabelle O’Day, 17, was in history class when the shooting started. She remembers hearing the fire alarm. As a history teacher shouted to the children: “Run!”, And she, along with everyone else, left the class. SWAT and FBI vehicles were already parked outside the campus. On the walls, she saw traces of blood and chips from bullets. At that moment, Annabelle did not believe that she was saved.

Tragedy changed her. The girl thought for a long time how she could support her city and people who lost loved ones on May 18, 2018.

With other students who survived the shooting in Santa Fe, they discussed how to avoid more victims. And they decided to create psychological support services – both in schools and outside them. Together they founded the non-profit organization Hearts United in Kindness. Her first project was a garden for people with post-traumatic stress disorder – a secluded place for walking.

Annabelle believes gun bans are not enough to stop US school shootings.

— If someone wants to commit evil, if his heart is filled with hatred, then he will find a way. Therefore, I believe that both teachers and students need to do everything to remain kind. And help others do it.

It still hurts the girl to think about the past. She survived, but other children died. This seems unfair. Another schoolgirl, Caitlin Richards, is experiencing the same thing.

“My classmate’s brother died. He was the same age as mine. It was hard for me to think that my brother was saved, and hers was not, ”she admits.

After the tragedy, Santa Fe has changed forever. But Annabelle learned good things about her city. People still help each other.

“We can’t choose how other people treat you. But we ourselves choose how to respond to this. Now I want one thing – that all those who suffered received help and did not feel alone, ”she says.

Cop Tears

School cop John Barnes was seriously injured and partially lost his memory after a mass shooting in Santa Fe. Only a year later he managed to restore the events of that terrible day.

At 7:30 a.m. he received a call – the staff heard the sound of gunshots. Together with the boss, Gary Forward, they ran up the stairs and rushed to the classrooms. John smelled gunpowder and pulled out a pistol. But he still didn’t see the shooter. Only children running in panic down the hallway.

A moment later, two people died in front of his eyes – teachers’ assistants. The buckshot then pierced his right forearm, severed the brachial artery, broke his elbow, and left a hole the size of a golf ball in his inner forearm. Policeman Barnes could no longer fight – he was losing consciousness from pain. His clothes were black with blood.

Gary Forward made a tourniquet out of a belt and wrapped it around Barnes’s arm before taking it to the dance class. There John waited for the doctors.

The fact that he survived, they considered a miracle – the policeman lost so much blood that, due to lack of oxygen, his lungs, kidneys and liver were damaged.

A month later, John Barnes could not remember what happened in the hospital. It was hard for him to find words, speech slowed down. The doctors didn’t know if it would go away.

“I knew there was something wrong with my brain,” he recalls. “But no one could help me.”

A year later, John’s memory has not returned. He does not remember the first eight days in the hospital. But the people of Santa Fe help him deal with it.

When Barnes was returning home from the hospital, there was a fire engine outside his house. She raised the American flag into the sky. Colleagues stood on the road and saluted him. Neighbors greeted the policeman with applause.

“Gary and the rest of the guys who got me out of there showed real bravery,” says Barnes, who is a little embarrassed by the attention. “I just got hurt.”

John Barnes has been working at the school in Santa Fe since January 2018. He considered this place quiet and calm after 20 years of service in the police – in the patrol and the juvenile department. John agreed to this job in order to spend more time with his family – his wife Ashley and two 15-year-old children – Riley and Luke.

On May 18, 2018, his whole life turned upside down. John managed to survive the shooting, but now he needed to recover and regain mobility in his right arm. For the first two weeks, he couldn’t even lift her. Everything had to be done on the left.

“I felt like a child every time I tried to write my name,” John said. He was afraid that he would no longer be able to hold a spoon or turn the doorknob with his right hand. But he didn’t give up.

It was even more difficult to cope with mental pain. When John remembered or talked about the shooting, he cried.

To get through this, Barnes met with other survivors and relatives of the victims, the doctors and nurses who had saved his life. He returned to school to see the scene of the tragedy again. All this helped him understand: on May 18, 2018, he did everything he could.

In September 2018, John Barnes underwent another operation. Rehabilitation restored mobility to his right arm. He learns to control her again.
