Cyberpunk was invented in passing by the great American science fiction writer Philip K. Dick when he wrote “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”. His no less great follower William Gibson did everything to ensure that cyberpunk took shape as a genre. It was in his Neuromancer series of novels that readers saw the decline of human culture against the backdrop of technological progress in the computer age. However, he most likely would have remained niche entertainment for sci-fi gourmets, if not for The Matrix and Ghost in the Shell. At the end of 19In the 90s, the Wachowski brothers and Mamoru Oshii introduced cyberpunk to the widest possible public and made it mainstream.
In the 21st century, the golden age of TV shows, TV shows such as Black Mirror, Altered Carbon and Westworld are in charge of promoting cyberpunk aesthetics.
“Peripherals” is a trendy member of the family, an adaptation of the 2014 Gibson novel of the same name, aimed at the newest audience. Not exactly childish, but definitely born in this century.
The main characters of “Peripherals” are a family of gamers, brother and sister Fishers, Flynn (Chloe Grace Moretz – “Kick-Ass”, “Suspiria”) and Burton (Jack Reynor – “Solstice”, ” shootout”). They vegetate in some remote American province in 2032, take care of a terminally ill mother and earn her expensive medicines by playing online VR games. Rich lamers willingly hire them into their teams to help them pass difficult levels for money.
Flynn is even more creative than Burton in the game. In the most fierce and hopeless boyish skirmishes, she acts as a kind of Mary Sue, instantly finds the only right solution and scatters virtual fascists like kittens.
But she does all this reluctantly, because she believes that gaming is kindergarten and not her level at all. The beauty has a non-virtual work in a 3D copy center. True, it is more like volunteering and obviously not particularly profitable, but in this America of the future, it seems that no one has a normal job.
“Peripheral devices” develop in the virtual space. The main plot starts with the fact that Burton receives a promising beta test order for a new VR game and invites his genius sister to participate. Like, since you are the coolest gamer here, you have the cards in your hands, in the sense of a futuristic VR device on your head.
The game stuns young Flynn with its realism, but very soon the extreme level of IQ tells the beauty that all this is somehow too cool. Her suspicions are confirmed – a quantum tunnel to London 209 is hiding under the guise of an experimental video game.

The character played by Miss Fisher from 2032 turns out to be a robot (or, more accurately, a peripheral) operating in London 2099. Despite this, sci-fi fans in general and Gibson fans in particular, Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan took on Peripherals with great enthusiasm. And so that the adaptation of the famous bestseller would not be pursued by the sad fate of Westworld, the fourth season of which is ten times less popular than the first, they attracted American writer and screenwriter Scott B. Smith (Simple Plan, Ruins) as showrunner.
It looks like it’s Mr. Smith that Gibson fans have to thank for how masterfully the two futuristic timelines complement each other without turning the story into a labyrinth. And for the many technological sci-fi novelties that he was able to visualize during adaptation. In itself, controlling a certain body remotely with the help of an avatar, of course, is not know-how, but the idea that this can be used to travel in time seems to be presented for the first time.
Smith did a titanic job with both this squared time travel and the actors. Chloë Grace Moretz, who until then had mostly been given childish characters, was to play a genius, a woman with incredibly high intelligence. The series demanded a lot from her heroine, as from the center of the whole story, around which, like planets, secondary heroes and villains circle.
And she did it. Even in a latex suit in hand-to-hand combat, even in a bath towel in front of a mirror, it’s like Neo and Trinity rolled into one – both beautiful and smart, and she’s all right with kung fu (besides, she has her own Morpheus in the person of Gary Carr, who plays her contact from the world of the future).
Her on-screen brother Jack Raynor has played quite well in the big leagues before, but as minor characters. Here, for the first time, he gets a huge amount of screen time and uses it properly. One surgical operation, where they cut out his eye without anesthesia, which is worth it. Come to think of it, even James Bond, over decades of torture in various dungeons, hasn’t endured this.
The antagonists also got worthy actors into their camp. In the US of 2032, Corbell is villainous – Louis Hertham from Westworld and Breaking Bad.
He combines extreme cruelty with elegant manner and style of dress. And in London, 2099 runs its sinister R&D T’Nia Miller, who seems to have decided to specialize in TV sci-fi. Her two previous roles were in the series The Foundation and The Years.
Before the release of Peripherals, Jeff Bezos could not boast of the same success in science fiction. Night Sky and The Paperwomen closed after the first season, and The Outer Spheres, although formally renewed for a second, lost a showrunner during the pandemic. But now Amazon has every reason to believe that the black streak is over.
Cyberpunk founder William Gibson waited until the age of 74 for a film adaptation worthy of his brilliant pen. The combination of strong acting, compelling visuals, a coherent script, and solid direction make Peripherals the most compelling Gibson adaptation to date.
