The best cyberpunk adaptation since Blade Runner.

Pavel Matyazh on “Peripherals” – News

Cyberpunk was invented in passing by the great American science fiction writer Philip K. Dick when he wrote “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”. His no less great follower William Gibson did everything to ensure that cyberpunk took shape as a genre. It was in his Neuromancer series of novels that readers saw the decline of human culture against the backdrop of technological progress in the computer age. However, he most likely would have remained niche entertainment for sci-fi gourmets, if not for The Matrix and Ghost in the Shell. At the end of 19In the 90s, the Wachowski brothers and Mamoru Oshii introduced cyberpunk to the widest possible public and made it mainstream.

In the 21st century, the golden age of TV shows, TV shows such as Black Mirror, Altered Carbon and Westworld are in charge of promoting cyberpunk aesthetics. “Peripherals” is a trendy member of the family, an adaptation of the 2014 Gibson novel of the same name, aimed at the newest audience. Not exactly childish, but definitely born in this century.

The main characters of “Peripherals” are a family of gamers, brother and sister Fishers, Flynn (Chloe Grace Moretz – “Kick-Ass”, “Suspiria”) and Burton (Jack Reynor – “Solstice”, ” shootout”). They vegetate in some remote American province in 2032, take care of a terminally ill mother and earn her expensive medicines by playing online VR games. Rich lamers willingly hire them into their teams to help them pass difficult levels for money.

Flynn is even more creative than Burton in the game. In the most fierce and hopeless boyish skirmishes, she acts as a kind of Mary Sue, instantly finds the only right solution and scatters virtual fascists like kittens. But she does all this reluctantly, because she believes that gaming is kindergarten and not her level at all. The beauty has a non-virtual work in a 3D copy center. True, it is more like volunteering and obviously not particularly profitable, but in this America of the future, it seems that no one has a normal job.

“Peripheral devices” develop in the virtual space. The main plot starts with the fact that Burton receives a promising beta test order for a new VR game and invites his genius sister to participate. Like, since you are the coolest gamer here, you have the cards in your hands, in the sense of a futuristic VR device on your head.

The game stuns young Flynn with its realism, but very soon the extreme level of IQ tells the beauty that all this is somehow too cool. Her suspicions are confirmed – a quantum tunnel to London 209 is hiding under the guise of an experimental video game. 9 years old A physical object cannot be moved through it, but information flows are able to pass through time and the British from the distant future can communicate with Americans from the near future using this technology.

The character played by Miss Fisher from 2032 turns out to be a robot (or, more accurately, a peripheral) operating in London 2099. Moreover, it acts quite decisively, albeit with an unknown main character purpose. While Flynn thought she was playing an experimental game in 2032, the cybernetic eyes of a robot from 209At the age of 9, she saw something that she shouldn’t have. And now the British from the future want to kill her. By the way, not only the British, in futuristic London, a descendant of Russian KGB officers named Leo lives and weaves his nets (Gibson adores Russians, just like Sting or Guy Ritchie, and cannot imagine the future without our insidious compatriots).

Gibson is almost always so difficult, so filming his works has never been a cakewalk. Many Hollywood screenwriters and producers snapped their teeth about them. Some success was achieved by the film adaptation of the story “Johnny Mnemonic” in 1995 year. There is also the 1998 New Rose Hotel, but young Keanu Reeves did not play there, so no one seems to have watched that film at all.

Despite this, sci-fi fans in general and Gibson fans in particular, Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan took on Peripherals with great enthusiasm. And so that the adaptation of the famous bestseller would not be pursued by the sad fate of Westworld, the fourth season of which is ten times less popular than the first, they attracted American writer and screenwriter Scott B. Smith (Simple Plan, Ruins) as showrunner.

It looks like it’s Mr. Smith that Gibson fans have to thank for how masterfully the two futuristic timelines complement each other without turning the story into a labyrinth. And for the many technological sci-fi novelties that he was able to visualize during adaptation. In itself, controlling a certain body remotely with the help of an avatar, of course, is not know-how, but the idea that this can be used to travel in time seems to be presented for the first time.

Smith did a titanic job with both this squared time travel and the actors. Chloë Grace Moretz, who until then had mostly been given childish characters, was to play a genius, a woman with incredibly high intelligence. The series demanded a lot from her heroine, as from the center of the whole story, around which, like planets, secondary heroes and villains circle. And she did it. Even in a latex suit in hand-to-hand combat, even in a bath towel in front of a mirror, it’s like Neo and Trinity rolled into one – both beautiful and smart, and she’s all right with kung fu (besides, she has her own Morpheus in the person of Gary Carr, who plays her contact from the world of the future).

Her on-screen brother Jack Raynor has played quite well in the big leagues before, but as minor characters. Here, for the first time, he gets a huge amount of screen time and uses it properly. One surgical operation, where they cut out his eye without anesthesia, which is worth it. Come to think of it, even James Bond, over decades of torture in various dungeons, hasn’t endured this.

The antagonists also got worthy actors into their camp. In the US of 2032, Corbell is villainous – Louis Hertham from Westworld and Breaking Bad. He combines extreme cruelty with elegant manner and style of dress. And in London, 2099 runs its sinister R&D T’Nia Miller, who seems to have decided to specialize in TV sci-fi. Her two previous roles were in the series The Foundation and The Years.

Before the release of Peripherals, Jeff Bezos could not boast of the same success in science fiction. Night Sky and The Paperwomen closed after the first season, and The Outer Spheres, although formally renewed for a second, lost a showrunner during the pandemic. But now Amazon has every reason to believe that the black streak is over.

Cyberpunk founder William Gibson waited until the age of 74 for a film adaptation worthy of his brilliant pen. The combination of strong acting, compelling visuals, a coherent script, and solid direction make Peripherals the most compelling Gibson adaptation to date.

Happy viewing.

Amanda Bynes (Amanda Bynes) – biography, photo, personal life, what is happening to her now, height and weight

Amanda Laura Bynes (Amanda Laura Bynes) – the heroine of youth comedies (“Big Fat Liar”, “She’s a Man”, “What a Girl Wants”, “Hairspray”, “Love on an Island”), who began her career in childhood and reputed in the early 2000s as one of the most promising and bright actresses in Hollywood.

American actress Amanda Bynes

The star, who has been compared by critics to legendary comedians Tracey Ullman and Lucille Ball, has repeatedly won the Kids’ Choice Awards and was included in the 2008 Hot 100 by men’s magazine Maxim. But upon reaching the age of 20, she experienced a life crisis – due to drug and alcohol addiction, she became a participant in a number of scandals, had problems with the law, and got mental problems.

Childhood

The future movie star was born on April 3, 1986 years old in Thousand Oaks and was the youngest of three children of dentist Rick Bynes and his assistant, Lynn Organ. The girl’s mother is a Jew, descended from Ashkenazi Jews, her father is a Catholic, had Irish, Polish and Lithuanian roots.

Her 12-year-old brother Tommy followed in the footsteps of his parents and chose the profession of a doctor, and her sister Gillian, who was born 3 years earlier than Amanda, studied to be a historian and was also fond of acting. The fact is that the head of the family was a big fan of the comedy genre and in every possible way encouraged the interest of children in acting.

So Amanda already at the age of 3 repeated the words from the roles of her older sister, who played in performances, and at 7 she herself went on stage. The debut for the girl was the role in the play “Annie” of the youth center in the city of Camarillo, which caused rave reviews in the press.

Then she played on the stage of an amateur theater, in particular, she participated in the production of “To Kill a Mockingbird” based on the novel by the writer Harper Lee as a scout, in the production of “The Secret Garden” based on the novel by Francis Burnett played Maria, regularly performed with humorous miniatures, and also starred in advertising for Nestlé. Her acting was consistently acclaimed by critics as “sensational” and “impressive”.

“Children’s” roles

In 1996, Amanda auditioned for a role in the sketch show Stuff, which was a huge success in the United States. The secret of the success of the young artist, who starred in the program over the next six years, was considered an enviable hard work and the fact that she, having an attractive appearance, was never embarrassed by comic scenes and was not afraid to appear stupid or ugly in them. The main thing is that the viewer should be funny.

At the same time, in the period 1999-2003. the young actress hosted her own “Amanda Show”, one of the highest rated projects on the Nickelodeon channel of those years. The content was reminiscent of “Stuff”: also humorous sketches, many parodies of popular TV shows. For four years, Bynes has been voted the Best Teen Actress on TV, as evidenced by the Kids’ Choice Awards.

At the age of 15, the comedian made her debut on the big screen. She brilliantly played Kaley, the girlfriend of the main character Jason (actor Frankie Muniz) in the comedy Big Fat Liar and received another film award, but now in the Favorite Movie Actress nomination.

In the same 2002, she received an offer to star in the TV series All the Best in You. Then, for four seasons, she successfully played one of the central roles in it, 16-year-old Holly. In the story, she had to live with her older sister Valerie (Jenny Garth) after their father left for Japan. It was not easy for both of them to get used to this state of affairs, and many had to be sacrificed.

A year later, she again received the Kids’ Choice Award and gained particular popularity in Europe, superbly coping with the main role of Daphne in the romantic comedy film What a Girl Wants. Her heroine, a young incredibly charming and spontaneous American, dreamed of meeting her father, the English Lord Henry Dashwood (Colin Firth). To this end, she went to London, where she brought a fresh stream into the stiff world of English high society. As a result, the girl made her parents happy – they finally got married, and she herself met her love – the musician Ian (Oliver James).

In 2004, the film actress graduated with honors (according to a special program) at the high school of her native city and began filming in the comedy melodrama Love on the Island, which took place in amazingly beautiful protected areas of the Dominican Republic. The actress played the central character – 18-year-old Jenny, who was trying to win the heart of the guy of her dreams.

The heyday of a career

In 2005, fans of the actress could see their favorite in the teen comedy She’s the Man, where she co-starred with Channing Tatum. Her heroine, the captain of the women’s football team Viola, was not allowed to compete. Then she dressed up as her twin brother Sebastian and still became a participant in a sports competition, constantly getting into funny situations.

In 2007, the girl showed a high degree of comedic skill, playing Penny, the girlfriend of the key character Tracy (Nikki Blonsky), in the musical tape “Hairspray”, which became a real hit, grossing over $ 200 million at the box office (with a budget of 75 million) and received several film awards and prize nominations. Her partners on the site were such Hollywood stars as Michelle Pfeiffer, John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Zac Efron.

In the same period, the comedy student film “Sidney White” was released, which was an original interpretation of the story of Snow White, where she played a key role. At the same time, Amanda expanded the scope of activities by launching her own clothing line called Dear in partnership with the retail chain Steve & Barry’s.

Amanda has always been interested in fashion design

In 2008, she joined the cast of the television movie Living Proof as an assistant to Dr. Slamon, who was looking for a cure for breast cancer, a year later she played Sarah-Beth in the film Canned.

In 2010, the last film work of the star was released – “Excellent student of easy virtue”, where she reincarnated as a representative of the puritan movement Marianne, and her filming colleagues were Emma Stone, Patricia Clarkson, Penn Badgley, Stanley Tucci. In the same year, the actress posed for the cover of Maxim magazine and took 46th place in its “Hot Hundred”.

Drug addiction and career failure

In the early 2010s, the movie star, considered by that time one of the most talented young comedy actresses, began to have serious mental health problems.

Drug and alcohol addiction among actors who became famous in their youth is not uncommon. Someone pays for it with a career, like Macaulay Culkin, someone, like Drew Barrymore, manages to return to duty, while others say goodbye to life, like River Phoenix. Amanda, one might say, was lucky – she fell not into the third, but into the first category.

In 2012, Amanda Bynes was arrested for drunk driving

In April 2012, the star was arrested for driving while intoxicated. When the traffic police officers tried to stop the car, Amanda gave on the gas and crashed into the car in front. After the court verdict, Bynes tweeted President Barack Obama: “Hey Barack. I do not drink. Please fire the cops who arrested me. I didn’t try to run away from the scene of the accident. End”.

However, in August, a similar story happened: Amanda drank too much and crashed into a car. After two episodes, she was facing a year in prison. At the same time, the actress insisted on her innocence. A month later, she was pulled over for driving with an expired driver’s license. Lindsay Lohan, Amanda’s sworn rival, although she herself loved to drive drunk, was indignant: “Why did they put me in jail, but Bynes is still not in prison? She broke the law!”

In the same month, Amanda publicly stated that “she is doing great. ” She moved to New York, launched a personalized clothing line and denied her addiction to alcohol. However, in the press every now and then there were reports from eyewitnesses about the strange behavior of the actress.

For example, she stripped down to her underwear at dance class, took out lipstick and mascara from her bag and tinted her lips and eyelashes for 10 minutes, then ran out of the classroom.

The next day, Amanda’s contract was terminated by her agent, press secretary and lawyer. “She’s been the perfect client all these years, but lately she’s been awfully hard to work with,” they commented. In November 2012, Bynes filed a lawsuit over a publication that wrote that she visited a beauty salon completely naked.

Insiders claimed that they saw Amanda talking to a non-existent interlocutor, showed panic fear when the alarm went off at the front door (she believed that she was being watched and listening devices were built in there). She insulted her colleagues on social networks, including Rihanna, Courtney Love and Cher (calling them mediocre and ugly).

Amanda Bynes was addicted to drugs in New York

In early 2013, Amanda got pierced cheeks, dyed her hair pink and, it seems, began not only to drink, but also to use drugs. At least that’s what fans thought, surprised by her tweets that she was the one who supposedly came up with the abbreviations “ILU” (I Love U) and LOL. “I want Drake to finish my vagina,” she wrote next. “Getting ready for a party, sucking sour,” she commented with a video she posted on Facebook. A number of publications made conclusions about a mental disorder, after which Amanda announced that she would sue anyone who allows her to talk about her in this vein.

Suspicious Behavior of Amanda Bynes

In May 2013, paparazzi infiltrated a party at Amanda’s house, capturing the horrendous mess, drug packets strewn across the floor, and the actress’ bed, a dirty mattress with no linens. The next day, Amanda was charged with drug use. In response, Amanda accused the police of harassment, and a day later wrote an insulting tweet to Rihanna: “Chris Brown beat you because you are ugly,” but later deleted it. On the same day, Amanda announced that she would sue her own family: “For money laundering and the merciless exploitation of my labor.”

In 2013, Amanda Bynes was convicted of drunkenness and drugs

The result of the girl’s inappropriate behavior was a suspended sentence (for drunk driving and possession of marijuana) and forced placement in a psychiatric clinic (after trying to set fire to a canister with a combustible substance near her parents’ house). After undergoing therapy, she apologized to everyone she offended with her behavior, and also admitted that she started smoking marijuana at the age of 16.

Later life

In 2015, the plump and outwardly changed teen comedy star of the early 2000s left the clinic and continued her studies at FIDM. In 2017, she appeared on the TV show Good Morning America, talking about student life, her intention to start an undergraduate program, and her dreams of returning to the big screen and getting an invitation to some kind of entertainment TV show.

After treatment, Amanda Bynes gained weight

A year later, the thinner and prettier Bynes posed for the cover of Paper, frankly telling in an interview about the problems she had experienced, about depression, about how she became addicted to illegal drugs. She repented of her former antics committed under their influence. Also, the 32-year-old American assured readers that the black streak in her life is far behind – she has been “clean” for 4 years and leads a sober lifestyle.

Personal life of Amanda Bynes

The Hollywood star was not married, but she had quite a few novels. In 1999, she met with the same young talent like her, Drake Bell, who took part in the Amanda Show.

During the period 2001-2002 her boyfriend was comedian and singer Taran Killam, who also appeared on her TV show. In 2002, the young beauty’s heart was won by her partner in the comedy Big Fat Liar, actor and racing driver Frankie Muniz.

Amanda Bynes and Taran Killam

A year later, the 17-year-old actress had a new lover – 24-year-old Nick Zano. He played her boyfriend in the TV series Why I Love You until the project closed in 2006.

Then, after filming together in the film “She’s a Man”, her chosen one was the 22-year-old senior actor David Cross, who played the director Horatio.

At that time, she was actively credited with a relationship with Channing Tatum, who played the football player Duke in this comedy, with whom her heroine Viola fell in love.

Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum

In 2008, Amanda had a brief relationship with actor/director Seth MacFarlane after she voiced a supporting character in his animated sitcom Family Guy. That same year, she had a romantic affair with baseball player Doug Reinhardt, Paris Hilton’s ex-boyfriend.

In 2010, Bynes was noted in the gossip column for an affair with hip-hop artist Kid Cudi, who left her because of her tendency to share the details of her personal life with the whole world.

Amanda Bynes is 170 cm tall

After 4 years, the actress was noticed in a nightclub with handsome Liam Hemsworth, who at that time broke up with his beloved Miley Cyrus.

In the fall of the same year, the 28-year-old star told reporters that she was going to marry a 19-year-old young man named Caleb, who worked as a salesman, and demonstrated the ring he had given. Since then, nothing is known about the novels of the actress, who concentrated on her recovery.

Amanda Bynes now

In January 2019, after suffering a relapse, the girl had to return to a rehabilitation clinic, where she received professional help from specialists specializing in the treatment of drug addiction and mental disorders.

In June of the same year, she shared on Twitter her new photo and information about completing her FIDM college education and gaining the knowledge to build a successful career in the fashion industry.

In February 2020, it became known that the actress attends the Alcoholics Anonymous club.
