Daycare worker charged with neglect after two children go to hospital

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – A daycare worker in Evansville is facing neglect charges after two children were taken to the hospital with injuries.

The investigation started in early March when investigators with DCS contacted authorities about an incident at High Point Daycare.

They say a 13-month-old was taken to the hospital with a broken arm.

According to the affidavit, the child’s parents took her to the hospital when she kept fussing and they couldn’t do anything to comfort her.

They say the daycare told them the child’s fussiness was from teething.

The affidavit states that after learning their child had a broken arm, the parents went to the daycare to review surveillance. They say their child was acting normal until a diaper change.

Police say the video showed a daycare worker, 26-year-old Nikki Moore, picking up the child and thrusting her down onto the changing table.

They say the video shows the child crying and screaming.

The affidavit says Moore then put the child in the crib because she wouldn’t stop crying.

Officers say they learned of a similar situation, involving the daycare that happened several days before.

Officers were called to the hospital at the beginning of February after a 15-month-old child was brought in with cuts and bruises.

Authorities say the child’s mother was told of an incident at their daycare a day before.

The daycare told the child’s mother they noticed a cut and redness during a diaper change. She was also told there was some bleeding in the child’s diaper.

Officers say they interviewed Moore who was also working that day.

She told officers she changed the child’s diaper in the afternoon.

Investigators say they reviewed surveillance of the incident and showed it to a pediatrician.

According to the affidavit, the doctor was “very disturbed” when watching the video.

The doctor reported that the child was handled with excessive force while being wiped, which could cause injuries to the child’s genital area.

Sgt. Anna Gray with the Evansville Police Department says with daycare workers having extensive trainings, instances like this should have no excuse.

“There’s that line that has been crossed. As far as, now this wasn’t just an accident. This could have been avoided. Or, maybe there was a circumstance such as this… where maybe it was accidental and it wasn’t done on purpose, but once a child was hurt, why didn’t you take the extra steps to actually get medical care? Why didn’t you call a parent?” said Sgt. Gray.

Management at High Point says that Moore has been terminated.

Moore made her first court appearance on Monday, where she pleaded not guilty and was released from jail after posting a $500 cash bond. She’s due back in court next month.

The attorney that’s representing one of the children also says that the family is filing a civil lawsuit against High Point.

Fees

Affordable, quality child care makes a significant difference in a child’s life. Our fees are determined by a sliding fee scale. Carver childcare fees are comparable to industry and local rates.

If you need assistance, we can establish a weekly or bi-weekly payment plan. We also accept childcare vouchers and assist you with finding resources in the community, like the The Vanderburgh County Gatekeeper Voucher Program, Division of Family and Children Childcare Development Fund, and On My Way Pre-K, that may pay part or all of Carver’s childcare fees for eligible families.

Education Curriculum

We strive to build a positive learning environment, both educationally and socially. Our education programs are designed by The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool and Infants, Toddlers & Twos. Both curriculums include comprehensive, research-based experiences that emphasize nurturing, consistent, and loving interactions.

Infants / 6 weeks – 15 months

We aim to keep enrolled infants on their own unique schedule. Information provided by the parents is used to plan each child’s day around his or her needs.

We hold ourselves to high standards for the growth and safety of your children. Carver Community Organization is a Level 3 childcare provider on the Paths to QUALITY™, Indiana’s Quality Rating and Improvement Systems (QRIS) for childcare. We’re also a state-licensed childcare and early learning center.

In order to ensure we provide the highest quality of care, we are in the process of achieving national accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). This designation will elevate the Day Care & Preschool from Level 3 to Level 4 on the Paths to QUALITY™, the highest level of quality.  

Nutrition

Each child enrolled in the Day Care & Preschool receives well-balanced meals and snacks. Our 1st shift childcare includes a morning snack, breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack. The 2nd shift include an afternoon snack, dinner, and an evening snack. Staff

Shaping little minds is a big job. That’s why we staff skilled and experienced childcare professionals at Carver Community Organization, and many are Carver kids themselves.

All childcare staff complete an initial orientation program as well as a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education per year. Each team member maintains certification in first aid, CPR, universal precautions, and nutrition/sanitation.

Everyone at Carver contributes to our positive learning environment in some way, whether it’s bonding with a child or building trust with a parent, and our teachers are specifically trained in early childhood development 

Lead Teachers

Lead Teachers must have a Child Development Certificate (CDA) or currently working on an associate’s degree or higher in early child education/child development.

Teacher’s Assistants must have a high school diploma and be working on a CDA or an associate’s degree or higher in early child education/child development.
