Today Over 350,000 people live in Tampa every day. It is the third largest city in the state. More than 45% of its residents are white, 23.7% are Hispanic, and 23.5% are African American. Less than one percent are the descendants of the indigenous population – the Indians.

A Brief History of Tampa

The area now occupied by Tampa was originally land owned by Indian tribes. It is from their language that the name of the city came. Tampa – “sticks with fire” – so the Indians called lightning.
In the 16th century, conquistadors appeared in Florida. History even preserved the name of the first European who ended up in these parts – Panfilo de Narvaez.

In 1821, the United States bought Florida from Spain, and a fort of the American army appeared here a few years later. Gradually, it is overgrown with civilian settlements, which preferred to stay close to the fortress, fearing Indian raids. Already in 1855, Tampa was officially called a city.

However, these lands really come to life only in the second half of the 19th century, with the discovery of a large deposit of phosphates. Thanks to this, the mining industry began to develop in the city. Another impetus to the development of the city was given by a tobacco factory. It opened here in 1886 and produced very popular cigars.

Already in the middle of the 20th century, Tampa became a major business and tourist center, one of the fastest growing cities in the state. Today it occupies a leading position in many scientific fields. Several prestigious universities operate here. And it is in Tampa that the main servers of the world’s main encyclopedia, Wikipedia, are stored.
