My travels. City of Saint Louis, Missouri. Part 9. St. Louis Art Museum: neznakomka_18 – LiveJournal
After a long break, I will continue to talk about St. Louis.
This part is a logical continuation of the two previous parts and at the same time it is completely independent.
The penultimate part was devoted to Forest Park, and the Art Museum of St. Louis is located just in the park.
And in the last, 8th part of my story, we talked about the Historical Museum – also, by the way, located in Forest Park.
One of the expositions of the Historical Museum was devoted to the World Exhibition held in St. Louis in 1904. Of the many buildings built then for this grand event, only two have survived to this day – these buildings are precisely where these museums are located: the Historical and the Art Museum.
That’s the Art Museum and will now be discussed.
The museum is located on a certain hill, offering beautiful views.
What space!
The building, built, as I said, in 1904, houses tens of thousands of cultural and art objects.
Entrance to the Art Museum is free: the museum is funded by taxes, donations, museum store sales, etc.
The museum’s collection includes 9 sections, including American art, Asian, European, Islamic, African and some others.
Due to lack of time, we decided to focus mainly on the European section.
Here you can see the real masterpieces of the great masters.
One of the most interesting works for me was a small sculpture called Pan Breathing .
It was created in 1535 by the Italian master Francesco da Sangallo .
It is likely that this statue once served as a fountain: a hole for water can be seen in the bag above his right hand.
Someone may be familiar with this sculpture indirectly, because it was painted by many artists, including Peter Paul Rubens.
This painting by Rubens (1610) of the same name can be seen in Washington at the National Art Gallery.
But even in Rubens I don’t catch what I see on this marble and incredibly sensual face, namely: absolute bliss!
Rembrandt – “Portrait of a young man”
Artemisia Gentileschi (1583-1654) – “Danae”
This Italian artist became the first woman member of the Florentine Academy of Fine Arts.
She painted the picture “Danae” when she was 19 years old.
Giorgio Vasari – “Judith and Holofernes” (1554)
Vasari copied her figure from the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo.
Titian – “The Mocking of Christ”
Pontius Pilate shows Jesus to the invisible crowd, which will decide his fate.
Max Beckmann – Nude and Sculpture (1946)
hundreds of his works were confiscated, which were then exhibited at the “Degenerate Art” exhibition.
After this exhibition, Beckmann decided to leave his homeland, where he did not return even after the end of the war.
Henri Matisse (1869-1954) – “Bathers with a Turtle” (1908)
Please note: three stripes in the background symbolize 3 elements: sky, earth and water. By the way, each of the women corresponds to one of them.
Interestingly, this painting was purchased by Joseph Pulitzer Jr. at an art auction that, like the previous painting, was considered “degenerate” by the Nazi government.
Pulitzer bought this work in 1939 at the urging of his son Matisse to prevent its destruction, despite the fact that the profits from the auction went to the Nazis.
Marc Chagall – “The Temptation” (1912)
The work is done in the style of cubism.
Auguste Rodin – Despair (1890)
A man, curled up in a fetal position, protects his face with his right hand.
This sculpture really evokes feelings of despair and hopelessness.
Vincent van Gogh – “Factories from the Quai de Clichy” (1887)
Vincent van Gogh – “Vineyards overlooking the Auvers” (1890)
moved to the village of Gouwers Oise near Paris in May 1890 and spent two prolific months there until his suicide, painting about 70 paintings here, including this one.
He is buried in the same village.
Jules Breton – “Wounded Gull” (1878)
Breton – French poet and naturalist painter.
An interesting fact: Van Gogh walked 200 kilometers to get to Breton, but never entered his workshop, as he was too shy.
Auguste Rodin – Bust of Victor Hugo (1883)
Rodin admired Hugo and considered him a real genius.
This bust is based on drawings that Rodin made at Hugo’s house because the aging writer could not sit and pose for hours.
Paul Gauguin – Madame Roulin (1888)
The artist painted this painting during his two-month stay at Van Gogh’s in Arly.
The picture shows the postman’s wife.
Edouard Manet – “The Reader” (1861)
The painting of one of the founders of impressionism shows his old friend, the artist Joseph Gall, absorbed in reading a large book..
(1879)
An unknown model posed for the artist in his studio in Montmartre.
Renoir used his characteristic feathered brush here, especially in the depiction of floral wallpaper
Anders Leonard Zorn – “Mrs. Lucy Turner Troy” (1897)
Zorn – the famous Swedish painter, whose commercial success was unusually high. He was a very fashionable artist: rich people, presidents, society ladies – everyone dreamed of being painted by Zorn. But, unfortunately, the demand for his work during the life of the artist was much higher than after his death.
An interesting case: when Savva Mamontov asked why Zorn did not draw a single button on his portrait, he answered:
“I am an artist, not a tailor.”
Alfred Sisley – “The Beach at Saint-Mames” (1884)
as well as personal recognition.
If after his solo exhibition in 189In the year 7, he could not sell any of his 150 paintings, if Claude Monet spent a year looking for someone who would pay Sisley 500 francs for 30 paintings, but did not find it, then just a year after the artist’s death, one of his paintings was paid 43 thousand francs – more than Sisley earned in his entire life.
Claude Monet – “Charing Cross Bridge” (1903)
This painting is part of a series of paintings with a view of London’s Charing Cross bridge crossing the Thames.
Each of the nearly 30 paintings in this series emphasized different light and weather effects.
Monet was a great Anglophile. He wrote: “I love London. .. what I love above all is the fog.”
Claude Monet – “Walk near the bridge in Arzhantye” (1874)
Maximilian Luc – “Kamare, Moonlight and Fisheries Boats” (1894)
Lus – French -neo -impressor and politicalPP anarchist.
Camille Pissarro – “Louvre, morning, sunlight” (1901)
Pissarro is a French and Danish painter of Jewish origin, impressionist and neo-impressionist.
As a young man, he said that the best way to promote French art would be to burn down the Louvre, thereby eradicating the influence of the art of the past.
Camille Pissarro – “The Bell Tower at Bazaincourt” (1885)
The artist created 40 views of the picturesque village of Bazaincourt, located near Paris.
Georges-Pierre Seurat – “Porte-en-Besin, pier before low tide” (1888)
Seurat – French impressionist painter, founder of neo-impressionism, creator of the original method of painting called “pointillism”. This is an artistic technique for conveying color and hues using individual color points.
In this picture, for example, the space filled with water is composed of small and closely spaced white and blue strokes, which at a distance gives the effect of a single surface.
Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot – “The Beach at Etretat” (1872)
Corot – French painter, one of the main landscape painters of the Romantic era, who influenced the Impressionists.
Koro’s color scheme is based on a combination of silver gray and pearl pearl tones.
In order not to bore me, this is where I will end my review of works of European art.
There is another small section in the museum – it is dedicated to the work of St. Louis schoolchildren.
I really liked this exhibition. Some of the work was surprisingly good.
Leaving the museum, we witnessed two events at once: on the one hand, there was a wedding photo shoot,
and on the other, a rally in defense of Iranian women.
This is what I like about America and Americans: they care about everything.
It’s good when a country can be proud not only of its museums, but also of an active, caring civil society.
