Back Bay

Back Bay is a protected historic district in downtown Boston, which is called the most beautiful in the city. Especially popular with tourists is that part of it, where the famous Victorian brownstones are perfectly preserved – houses lined with brown sandstone. The well-known Copley Square area is surrounded by several iconic sights. Among them are Trinity Church, Boston Public Library, Old South Church and John Hancock Tower, the tallest skyscraper in all of New England. The Back Bay is also home to the legendary Newbury Street, which is full of luxury shops, bohemian boutiques, stylish coffee houses and restaurants. Accommodation in the Back Bay is convenient in that it is easy to get to all the main attractions of the city from it. On its territory there are several stations of the green and orange metro lines. As for accommodation, for luxury lovers there are five-star hotels – Fairmont Copley Plaza and Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton Street, as well as several boutique hotels. And for those who are not in the mood to spend a lot on housing, there are comfortable guest houses and apartments for rent.

South End

The South End is often referred to as the city’s most authentic neighborhood. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its charming Victorian architecture. Another obvious advantage of the South End is about 30 beautiful parks and community gardens. In addition, he is an established star of the Boston culinary scene. The variety of cafes, gastro pubs and trendy restaurants here is simply amazing. The best of them are concentrated on Tremont Street. The tourist attractions of the South End also include SoWa, a popular arts district. It is home to many art studios, design galleries, showrooms, boutiques and shops selling craft and farm products. On Sundays, there is a vintage and antiques market. And the gastronomic component of SoWa is mobile eateries, tapas bars and restaurants of Asian cuisine. In the area you can find many budget accommodation options, which compensates for not the most convenient transport interchange.

Fenway-Kenmore

With several college and university campuses located here, Fenway-Kenmore is youthful, fun and bustling. This area is a great choice for those who love nightlife and parties. There are really many clubs, bars and restaurants for every taste, but in search of the most popular ones, you should head to Lansdowne Street and Kenmore Square. But there are other tourist attractions in the area. Sports fans should definitely visit Fenway Park, home of the legendary Boston Red Sox baseball team. And the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Symphony Hall and the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA Boston) are responsible for the cultural component of the area. Fenway-Kenmore’s popular green space with beautifully preserved wilderness areas is called the Back Bay Fens. The area is served by two metro lines. The most luxurious accommodation option here is the five-star Hotel Commonwealth, the official hotel of the Boston Red Sox. But as a youth area, Fenway-Kenmore is also great for finding budget accommodation. In the summer, many students leave and rent their apartments to tourists at very competitive prices.

North End

The North End is the city’s oldest district. It is quite quiet, cozy and perfect for travelers with children. At the end of the 19th century, immigrants from Italy actively settled in it, which influenced both the architectural appearance of the district and its culture. To this day, many Italian restaurants, pastry shops and bakeries operate here. The best of them are located on Salem and Hanover streets. And yet, on the last Sunday of August, the North End celebrates the feast of St. Anthony, holding a colorful parade and a gastronomic festival. Twelve locations in the area are on the National Register of Historic Places. The most significant of them is the Old North Church (Christ Church in the City of Boston), built at the beginning of the 18th century. Connoisseurs of good humor, once in the North End, should definitely go to a show at the Improv Asylum theater. And families with children will have a lot of pleasant experiences visiting the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum and the New England Aquarium. The North End is located near the historic city center and is served by three metro lines at once. Here you can find four-star hotels, such as Battery Wharf, apartments and guesthouses of various price categories, and good hostels.

Chinatown-Leather District

Boston’s Chinatown is New England’s only historic Chinese district. Due to its convenient location, excellent transport interchange, inexpensive hotels and a large selection of entertainment, it is very popular with tourists. This is a great place to immerse yourself in the culture of Asia and get a new gastronomic experience. There are a lot of Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants, atmospheric markets, authentic shops, souvenir shops, and spas offering traditional wellness and relaxation massages. Chinatown is also known for its beautiful murals, against which tourists love to be photographed. The Leather Quarter, located in the eastern part of the neighborhood, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is filled with large warehouses with beautiful architecture. At the end of the 19th century, they were used for dressing and selling leather. Now it houses offices of various companies and trendy restaurants.

South Boston

South Boston is a very atmospheric area with a rich American-Irish heritage, located on the banks of the Fort Point Canal and Dorchester Bay. In recent decades, it has gained particular popularity among visitors to the city, thanks to the good development of the tourist infrastructure. Particularly prominent in this regard is the South Boston waterfront, which the locals call the Seaport. In this part of the area there are about 80 restaurants, gastro-pubs and bars, 8 good hotels. And the panoramic views that open up to the city center are simply magnificent. Along the coastline of Dorchester Bay there are three beaches at once, with a total length of more than 4.8 kilometers – Pleasure Bay, M Street Beach and Carson Beach. Popular area attractions also include Fort Independence, South Boston Maritime Park, Institute of Contemporary Art, and Boston Children’s Museum.

Beacon Hill

Beacon Hill has been called one of Boston’s most romantic neighborhoods. It is easy to agree with this – cozy streets with even rows of beautiful buildings of the 18th and 19th centuries, paved sidewalks and the soft light of ancient gas lamps create a special atmosphere. In 1955, Beacon Hill was the first in the state to receive official designation as a Historic District. This is one of the most expensive and fashionable parts of Boston, and it is difficult to save money on living here. The area’s popular street is Charles Street, home to many antique shops, quirky boutiques, stylish cafes and upscale restaurants. And the famous Acorn Street is one of the most photographed streets in the United States. The Freedom Trail passes through Beacon Hill. Its most significant attraction in the area is the Old State House, from the balcony of which the US Declaration of Independence was read for the first time.

The rest of Boston is not as popular with tourists, but some of them have their advantages. For example, Alston and Brighton have a lot of students, so it is easy to find economy class accommodation, noisy parties and inexpensive cafes and bars there, but getting to the city center is not very convenient. Bay Village is one of the smallest neighborhoods in Boston with cozy green streets, located next to Chinatown and Back Bay. It has good accommodation options. Charlestown is located on a peninsula, in the north of Boston, which complicates logistics somewhat for travelers. But being the oldest district of the city, it has many interesting historical sites to offer. East Boston is separated from Charlestown and downtown by Boston Harbor. This is where Logan International Airport is located. The area is also known for its excellent public beach – Constitution Beach.

Boston areas to avoid

Despite the current negative stereotype, Boston is one of the safest big cities in America. The crime rate here is well below the national average. But three of its districts – Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan – are still criminogenic, and it is better for travelers to refuse to visit them. Especially after dark.

In the center of the city, in popular tourist places, you should carefully monitor your belongings and not attract robbers by displaying expensive equipment, cash or jewelry.
