Scot meets Voltaire, December 24, 1764

James Boswell

Famous as the biographer of Dr. Johnson, James Boswell was a typical breed of Scottish intellectuals. In his youth, eagerly absorbing ideas and theories, he wandered around Europe and once invited himself to Voltaire’s house in Ferney.

I experienced joyful anticipation… The ground was covered with snow; I greedily surveyed the wilderness and recalled all the great thoughts that I learned from the writings of Voltaire. First of all, I was struck by the church with the inscription at the entrance “Deo derexit Voltaire, MDCCLXI”[8]. His castle is beautiful. I was greeted by two or three footmen and led into an exquisitely furnished room. With one of them I sent Monsieur de Voltaire a note from Colonel Constant of The Hague. The servant returned with the words: “Monsieur de Voltaire does not tolerate being disturbed. He’s in bed.” I was afraid that I would not see him. Then some ladies and gentlemen entered the hall, so I was distracted for a while. At last Monsieur de Voltaire came out of his quarters. I looked at him intently and realized that in the portraits he was exactly the same. He greeted me with that splendor that the French have mastered to the fullest. He was wearing a sky blue trimmed night dress and a wig. He sat down in an armchair and smiled coyly as he talked. As it turned out, both of us were confused. My face was “the face of an enthusiastic simpleton.”

We are talking about Scotland. He said that the books published in Glasgow were “excellent”. I replied: “There is also an art academy, but it is not doing well. Our country is not inclined towards the fine arts.” He answered quite adamantly, “Of course. To draw well, the feet must be warm. It’s hard to draw when your feet are cold.” Another would surely have gone into lengthy discussions about the vagaries of our climate; Monsieur de Voltaire expressed the same thing in a dozen words…

I told him that Mr. Johnson and I intended to visit the Hebrides, the northern Scottish islands. He chuckled and exclaimed, “Is that so? Well, I’ll stay here. Do not you mind?” – “In no case”. “Then go. I have nothing against it”.

I asked if he spoke English. He replied: “No. To speak your language, you have to stick your tongue between your teeth, but I lost all my teeth…

Yesterday I returned to this most charming castle. The magician appeared shortly before dinner. But in the evening he went into the drawing-room in an excellent mood. I sat down next to him and began to carefully question him. I wish you could enjoy the flight of his imagination! He was truly magnificent and shone with wit. I persuaded him to say a few words in English, which he did with such grace that I could not help exclaiming: “My God, amazing!” Speaking our language, he seemed to acquire a British soul. He is daring, witty, endowed with humor, allows himself to dress in a way that easily surpasses the most comical characters. He constantly swears, as if he learned it in England. Here he purred a ballad, then made some senseless joke. Then he began to talk about our constitution, and these noble arguments from the lips of the famous Frenchman were very pleasant to my ears. Finally we touched on faith. Then he became furious, and everyone went to supper. Monsieur de Voltaire and I remained in the living room, where there was a large Bible; and if two mortals can argue violently, we have just such an argument. He stood for one thing, but I for another … I demanded from him a recognition of what convictions he really holds, and he opened his heart to me with an eloquence that touched me immensely. I did not think that he was capable of thinking in this way. .. He spoke of his feeling – his love – for the Supreme Being and that he did not want to obey the will of the Omniscient at all. He said that he would like to do good, like the Creator of the Good. He does not adhere to any other faith, he does not amuse his great mind with fantasies about the immortality of the soul. He said that it was possible, but that he did not know for sure about it. And because his mind is not able to accept it. I was shocked, but I doubted his sincerity and allowed myself to exclaim: “Do you really think so? Are you sincere with me? And he answered: “In the name of the Lord, yes.” And then the man whose tragedies so often inflame the public in Parisian theatres, added with a twinkle in his eye: “I have suffered much. However, I patiently endure adversity – as befits not a Christian, but a man.
