Grandma upset after 3-year-old left outside Omaha daycare
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A 3-year-old child was left outside at daycare on Monday, and her grandmother wants to know how that could happen.
The child is OK, and even though temperatures were around 50 degrees, her grandmother says the girl could have been hurt.
When Kris Kudlacz came to pick up her grandchild at Pre-K and Play Academy, located near 144th and Fort streets, on Monday, no one could find the girl.
“I started to head out the back door where the playground is and about the same time one of the other teachers was taking the trash out and he had heard her crying,” she said.
When the children came in from playing earlier, Kudlacz’s granddaughter was somehow left outside.
“I literally just grabbed her from him, and I came inside and I kind of yelled… I said, ‘This is not OK,’ and nobody said anything. I mean, it was just kind of like a deer-in-the-headlights look,” she said.
Kudlacz said the girl was muddy and shaken up.
The daycare director in a statement said the child was only “left unattended for a period of about two minutes.”
Still, it took a while for the child to settle down.
“And I asked her I said what were you doing outside? And she said ‘crying and eating snow.’ It just broke my heart… I mean I don’t know how long she was out there, and it doesn’t even really matter how long,” Kudlacz said. “They did send me an email about an hour and a half later and they apologized and said they were putting corrective actions in place, and I believe that. I believe they are. I don’t think it was done intentionally by any means. Nonetheless, it should never happen.”
The daycare was placed on probation by the state Department of Health and Human Services in 2019, when a child wandered out of the daycare and into traffic on Fort Street.
Kudlacz said she reported Monday’s incident to Nebraska DHHS and filed a police report.
She holds no ill will toward the daycare or its workers, but she’s looking for a new childcare provider.
“It’s not a terrible place… it’s just that trust feeling, you know. When I seen that it’s just my trust was lost,” she said.
6 News received a response from the director of Pre-K and Play Academy Director Shannon Schlabs that read in part: “We are truly sorry this happened… due to this situation, we immediately self-reported the incident to the state… We are developing more stringent policies and retraining staff to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
On Monday, January 31, 2022 there was a child that was left on the playground. The classroom came in and made it to their destination when they noticed that the child was missing. Just as this was happening, the child’s guardian came in and with the staff started looking for the child. Another staff member was outside and noticed the child on the playground. The staff member was talking with the child as the guardian came outside. Based on our investigation of the situation, we have determined that the child was left unattended for a period of about 2 minutes.
We are truly sorry this happened. Due to this situation, we immediately self-reported the incident to the state licensing agency and have reached out to the child’s family to discuss the situation but have heard nothing back from them. Immediately after this happened, our management team began working on a plan to develop more stringent policies, retrain staff and further monitor transitions so that we can ensure this doesn’t happen again.

Nebraska, US Nebraska is a region of unique beauty located on the Great Plains. The best features of modern America and corners of the wild nature are harmoniously intertwined here. Natural riches and bright cultural sights give it a unique appearance. In Nebraska, you can see overhanging cliffs atypical for the desert prairie zone, an artificial rainbow in the middle of the city, a cave park, sand dunes, sunken gardens and the most unprecedented museums. The inhabitants of this state have a wonderful sense of humor. Only in Nebraska, anyone, for a symbolic sum, can receive a legal diploma of an admiral. But there is one condition —to command the fleet such a “specialist” has the right only in the territory of the state where there is not a single sea. The original parody of the famous prehistoric monument Stonehenge — an installation of Carhenge cars — will also make you smile.
Nebraska really gives vivid emotions, so thousands of tourists rush to visit the state every year.
Geography
Nebraska belongs to the central-western part of the country. The main territory is spread on the Great Plains and only the west of the state is distinguished by a hilly relief - here the spurs of the Front Range rise. The rivers Niobrera, Platt River (right tributaries of the Missouri), Republican flow through the territory of Nebraska. Nebraska’s neighbors are Missouri, Kansas, South Dakota, Iowa, Wyoming, and Colorado.
The basis of the economy is agriculture. Nebraska belongs to the so-called “grain zone” of the country. This means that the cultivation of cereals, primarily corn, as well as animal husbandry, constitute the main source of income for the state.
Nebraska Cities
Lincoln is the state capital and the second most populous city in Nebraska. In addition to administrative institutions, the most beautiful cultural and historical sites are located here. The State Capitol, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the Haymarket Historic Market District, the Sheldon Art Museum, and the Museum of American Speed are all well worth a visit. Lincoln’s main pride is the Sunken Gardens, which are listed as one of the best gardens to visit in the United States.
Omaha is Nebraska’s largest city, located on the banks of the Missouri River at the easternmost point of the state. It is one of the three most attractive cities to live in the US according to one of the authoritative magazines. It has a well-developed tourism sector. Visitors to the city are attracted by the unique Henry Doorly Zoo, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, a pedestrian bridge over the Missouri that leads to the neighboring state of Iowa. Omaha is also known as the birthplace of millionaires and a highly cultured city. There is a large-scale theater community “Playhouse”, a botanical garden and many interesting museums.
Nebraska City is one of the oldest cities in the state. It is known as the birthplace of the eco-holiday Tree Planting Day. The ancient small town is attractive primarily for the Historical Park and Arboretum, the Kregel Windmill Museum, and the Applejack Apple Festival, which is held here annually in September.
Bellevue is one of the largest cities in Nebraska, located on the banks of the Missouri River. It was the first capital of this state – today there are many romantic corners that, together with historical sites, will make your vacation unforgettable. The city is distinguished by wonderful panoramas and really has a beautiful view - this is how its name is translated from French. Its beautiful architecture and picturesque landscapes annually attract thousands of connoisseurs of peaceful rest.
Grand Island is a city of unparalleled beauty on the banks of the Platte River. A variety of options for active recreation in nature or in a modern water park — is what people come here for. History buffs should add the Prairie Pioneer Stuhr Museum to their itinerary. The city is considered to be the largest trading center in Nebraska, where you can become the owner of a wide variety of goods. Each year, Grand Island hosts the State Fair.
Brief history
The first to develop the territories along the Platte River (a tributary of the Missouri) were Indian tribes of different cultures (Omaha, Ponca, Oto, Lakota and others). It was they who gave the name to the future state – Nebraska in their language means “flat water”.
Since the middle of the XVII century, these lands officially belonged to France, as part of the Louisiana colony. But in reality, the first Europeans set foot on the territory of Nebraska much later - in 1739, as part of the French-Canadian expedition.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the United States made a deal with France to purchase Louisiana. And already at the initiative of the American president, a total study of the country’s new possessions began. It could not do without conflicts with the Indians – over time, they began to be evicted to the reservation.
The gradual settlement of the territories by Americans began during the migration of the 40s of the 19th century. During that period, thousands of pioneers moved towards the desert lands. Then the concept of the Wild West appeared.
The Kansas-Nebraska Act, the California Gold Rush, and the Allotment Act contributed to the surge in population growth of the future state. By the 1860s, as a result of booming farming activity, Nebraska could already claim the status of a separate state. In 1967, it became part of the United States as the 37th state.
Things to Do in Nebraska
- Challenge yourself as a paleontologist at the Aegetian Fossil Historical Park. In these places, animals from the Miocene era were discovered, which were covered with volcanic ash. You can try to recognize some mammals by their fossilized outlines in this huge park. Also on its territory is the James Cook Ranch, a source of knowledge about the life and traditions of the American Indians.
- Visit the huge Henry Doorly Zoo, which has become home to more than 17 thousand animals and fish. All of them are here in conditions close to their natural habitat. Indoor jungles and deserts are the calling card of this zoo.
- Touch the high at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, home of Omaha. There are also a number of other art facilities in Nebraska, such as the Holland Art Center and the Sheldon Museum of Art (the latter is in Lincoln).
- Ride on the scenic Sandhills trails. Flowering meadows, small lakes and dunes of different heights — panoramas of this region will not leave anyone indifferent. The route of a special driving tour includes many bright sights, including Carhenge.
- Walk across the footbridge and be in another state. Iowa is next to Omaha, and the Missouri River serves as the border between them. The magnificent bridge is the link between them, with beautiful panoramas as a gift.
- Be in awe of the ancient remnant rock formations of Chimney Rock. The Chimney Mountain, 90 meters high, has the status of a National Historic Site.
- Admire the beauty of the flowers of the Sunken Gardens. The original structure of this object is divided into thematic locations. One of them turns into a new project every year. Vegetation zones with exclusively white flowering, areas of perennial trees and various flowers, waterfalls and sculptures will bring you real aesthetic pleasure.
- See with your own eyes the cliffs among the prairies of Scots Bluff, three hundred meters high. This natural object was given the status of a national monument. Trails and tunnels make it easy to climb, so you can admire the scenery from different angles and heights.
- Walk under the rainbow and make a wish. A special installation for recreating this natural phenomenon is located in the city of Omaha.
- Try traditional Nebraska runes. Their recipe was brought here by the Volga Germans who emigrated from Russia. Pies are made from yeast dough with various fillings – beef with onions, herbs, cabbage and spinach.
Best Time to Travel to Nebraska
Nebraska is characterized by cold winters and hot summers, as the continental climate prevails in the state. Nebraska lies in the zone of influence of the “Tornado Alley” known to all Americans — thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes are frequent phenomena for such regions. The transition of spring to summer is characterized by an increased likelihood of the formation of these elements, so it is better to refrain from traveling to Nebraska during this period.
Winters here are often snowy, the average air temperature ranges from -10ºС to +2ºС. In summer, this figure is about + 19-32ºС. This period is drier in the western part of the state. The best time to visit Nebraska is autumn and spring.
Interesting events in the state occur throughout the year. In August, the Balloon Festival is held here. In the spring, residents of the whole country celebrate the “Day of Planting Trees”, which has long become international. But in the homeland of this holiday, in Nebraska, it is especially enchanting.
The end of March and the beginning of April are marked by a touching natural event — the migration of cranes. Hundreds of thousands of these birds gather near the Platte River before migrating north.
Throughout the year, the state’s parks, stadiums, and venues are filled with festivals, music, rodeos, and sports — you never get bored here. nobody.
