What is the ELC?

The Early Learning Campus (ELC) is part of the Gladys and Lewis “Sonny” Bass Louisville Scholar House Campus and is an exemplary early child development center for children of UofL faculty, staff and students, and residents of the Louisville Scholar House. We serve all families and children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, or age. The facility is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and offers full day curriculum for children aged six weeks to prekindergarten.

The ELC is located at the corner of 5th and Bloom Streets, (behind or just north of Betty Johnson Hall on UofL’s Belknap Campus). Hours of operation are 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM, close at 5 PM on 3rd Thursdays.

Mildred Jane Hill was born in Louisville, Kentucky. She is the older of two sisters, Patty and Jessica. She studies music with her father, Calvin Cody, and Adolf Weidig.

She is reported to be a kindergarten and Sunday school teacher like her younger sister Patty. However, Robert Browneys, after doing extensive research on the Hill family, concludes that she was not, in fact, a kindergarten teacher.

She is involved in music, teaching, composition, interpretation and specializes in the study of Negro spirituality. Mildred and her sister Patty were honored at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair for their work in the Experimental Kindergarten Progressive Education program at the Louisville Experimental Kindergarten School.

She wrote about music under the pseudonym Johann Tonsor. His 1892 article “Negro Music”, suggesting that an existing corpus of black music would form the basis of a distinctive American musical style, influenced Antonin Dvorak when he composed Symphony No. 9.

She died in Chicago in 1916, long before her song became famous. She is buried with her sister at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky.

Mildred Hill’s manuscripts and papers are held at the University of Louisville Music Library.

Happy Birthday

The Hill Sisters compose the song Good Morning to All, Mildred writes the melody and Patty writes the lyrics. The song was first published in 1893 in the collection “Tales for Kindergarten” as a welcome song that teachers can sing to their students. Kindergarten Song Stories has received more than 20 editions and has been translated into French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and Swedish.

“Happy Birthday” first appeared in 1912 to the tune of “Good Morning Everyone” with various lyrics. Its popularity continued to grow into the 1930s, with no credit for new lyrics and no credit for the tune Good Morning to You . Thanks to the author’s notes 1935 years of the Summy company and a series of court cases of the sister became famous as the authors of the song.

If the author were remembered, Patty Hill would be more famous than Madonna, Michael Jackson or Britney Spears. But it never occurs to anyone to wonder when and by whom this song was composed. Most likely, they perceive it as folklore. nine0013

Meanwhile, it is known that she was born in 1893 and was originally called Good Morning to All. The lyrics were written by Patty Hill and the music was composed by her sister Mildred. The sisters did not have any copyright ambitions: the song was addressed to kids from kindergarten. She was born March 27, 1868, in Anchorage, Kentucky, the son of a Presbyterian minister. There were six children in the family – two boys and four girls. Parents allowed them a lot, although they demanded discipline. The children had a well-equipped room for games and various crafts. There was no kindergarten system then in America. Children from poor families, orphans, ended up in a few institutions for preschool children. In general, it was a kind of “charity house” for minors.
